In some ways, Ryo's life had been a lot simpler back when he'd still clung to the illusion that he was straight. People never gave heterosexual couples a second glance when they were out together, holding hands, having a meal in a romantic restaurant, dancing together at a club. A gay couple, however…
He and Dee had been refused service, even told they didn't have a hotel reservation once, even though Dee had received a confirmation email. People stared at them on the street, whispered to each other, sometimes yelled insults or threats.
No one had physically attacked Ryo yet, not for being gay anyway. As a police officer he knew to be on his guard whenever he was on the job because criminals often resorted to violence in an effort to escape justice, but in his free time he should be able to go to the movies or pick up groceries without having to defend himself.
"Don't sweat it, babe," Dee said, draping his arm around Ryo's shoulders. "Sure, sometimes you're gonna run into homophobic assholes, but most folks these days are more open-minded."
"Doesn't it bother you?"
"'Course it does, but we can't let prejudice and discrimination win."
