Chapter thirty-six: The battle for Sendoff Spring
The heroes immediately sprung into action to deal with all of the chaos going down at Sendoff Spring; they had to settle everything before they could get the spirited away children back to the seaside town near Valor Lakefront. However, that was easier said than done, as the children had been spirited away by a Dusknoir who, with its Dusclops minions, had the enthralled children build for them a fortress hut.
The reason being that the ghost Pokémon were quarreling with a horde of wild Bibarel for territory, as the Bibarel were trying to force them off. The leader of the Bibarel horde, led by a larger than normal male Bibarel, attacked the ghost Pokémon, forcing them on the defensive. Additionally, the Dusknoir leading the Dusclops minions and the large Bibarel were both knocked out, and with the knocking out of the Dusknoir leader, the enthrallment on the kids was wearing off.
To make things even more difficult for the heroes, during the fighting between the Dusknoir and the large Bibarel, they occasionally deflected attacks from each other, sending said attacks flying right into the nearby Turnback Cave, where said attacks blew up in. After that had occured a few times, the legendary Pokémon Giratina came barreling out of Turnback Cave, clearly annoyed that it had been disturbed, and began rampaging across the area.
The two armies of wild Pokémon starting to get back into fighting, plus managing the young children who were starting to come out of their enthrallment, PLUS having to deal with Giratina being thrusted onto the plate all of a sudden, made things far more challenging for the heores to deal with than what they had been bargaining for when they volunteered to go look for the children who had been spirited away in the middle of the night.
Luckily, they had enough hands on deck to deal with everything.
Ash, with the help of a shiny Dusclops who was keen on doing so, protected the young children while getting them to back away from everything. Brock, leading both his Sudowoodo who knows Hammer Arm and his Croagunk who knows Brick Break, went to deal with the Bibarels who were still fighting. Dawn originally was going to confront Giratina; given that she had Tsukune on hand, she was the only one capable of dealing with the Renegade Pokémon.
But then Kenny, declaring that he'd do so, rushed on in towards Giratina to deal with it. Dawn, hoping that her friend and fellow reborn trainer wasn't biting off more than he could chew, resigned herself to dealing with the Dusclops minions who were still fighting. Dawn figured that she could blitz all of them quickly by having Tsukune swamp all of them with Surf, then she could rush in and help Kenny out in dealing with Giratina.
...
As Giratina was roaring out in anger while rampaging, Kenny yelled out at it, "Oi, Giratina!" Having heard someone shout at it, Giratina turned to look and saw Kenny standing there, his Wigglytuff by his side. Both Kenny and his gangster Wigglytuff looked challengingly up at Giratina while Kenny pointed a finger at it. "We challenge you!"
Giratina roared as it turned its attention on Kenny and Wigglytuff; the red claws on Giratina's wings glowed fiercely with draconic power as Kenny used a special defense boosting battle item on Wigglytuff. After Kenny had used the battle item on Wigglytuff, Giratina struck the normal fairy type Pokémon with Dragon Claw, but looked surprised to see that its attack on the much smaller Pokémon did nothing whatsoever. More confused than enraged, Giratina roared at Wigglytuff as it vanished into the shadows.
While Giratina was gone, Kenny took the time to use another special defence boosting battle item on Wigglytuff. After that was done, Giratina reappeared to slam Wigglytuff with Shadow Force, its strongest move. Giratina figured that its strongest move would work, but saw to its increasingly shocked confusion that Shadow Force did nothing to Wigglytuff either. "Wigglytuff is dual normal fairy, Giratina!" Kenny said to the legendary Pokémon, "Ghost and dragon attacks won't do squat to him! Wigglytuff is the ultimate counter to you!"
Giratina roared in angered annoyance as it proceeded to use Pain Split while Kenny used a third and final special defence boosting battle item on Wigglytuff. Pain Split actually worked, but Giratina ended up doing damage to itself with the move. The Renegade Pokémon roared in angered annoyance once more as it had not only failed to do anything to Wigglytuff yet, but it ended up hurting itself in the process.
"Now that we've maxed our defenses against special attacks," Kenny said as he took out some defense boosting battle items, "Let's get going on defense against physical attacks!" Wigglytuff nodded in agreement with his trainer as the two of them kept occupying Giratina's time.
...
With the horde of Dusclops minions in front of her and Tsukune, Dawn pointed at them and said, "Tsukune, use Surf!" Conjuring up a large wave of water, Dawn's named Palkia cast the wave at the Dusclops minions, swamping all of them and sending them all reeling back. The Dusclops minions were all knocked out, all of them unable to stand up to the might of the legendary Palkia, a might further refined under the careful monitoring of a trainer who knew what she was doing.
However, Palkia let out a mildly irritated huff; Dawn figured that Tsukune must had burnt up all of its Power Points for Surf by hitting so many wild Pokémon that most of which must have been carrying the Pressure ability. Looking around, Dawn saw that Brock was dealing with the Bibarel horde one Bibarel at a time. He, his Sudowoodo, and his Croagunk looked to be getting overwhelmed, so Dawn pointed at the Bibarel horde. "Tsukune, start picking off the Bibarels with Power Gem!" Dawn said.
Taking aim with its right hand which glowed, Tsukune as the pearl in its right shoulder pad glowed fired glowing shots at the Bibarels, taking them out one at a time. Seeing that he had some backup come on unexpectedly, Brock turned to face Dawn. "What about the Dusclops?" Brock asked.
"Tsukune swamped all of them already," Dawn called back, "Now I can focus on helping you and your Pokémon deal with the Bibarels!"
Nodding in understanding, Brock replied, "It really would help that- Ah! That Bibarel is going for the children!"
Turning quickly, Dawn spotted one of the wild Bibarel going right for the group of children, having seen them help the Dusclops minions earlier. Opening its mouth, the Bibarel took aim and fired a Water Gun attack at a slender young boy, who raised his arms to cover his face as he saw the attack come flying right at him. The young boy cried out in fear as he was about to be attacked by the wild Bibarel.
...Only for Ash to rush in and take the Water Gun to his back instead, shielding the young boy although Ash himself took the hit. The shiny Dusclops, who was with Ash in protecting the children, saw this and was seemingly inspired by how far Ash was willing to go to protect the children. Turning to face the wild Bibarel who struck Ash, the shiny Dusclops rushed forward, an angry look on its face, and knocked Bibarel out with a socking Thunder Punch to the face.
"Ash!" Dawn called out, "Are you alright?!"
"Nothing... compared to hits I've taken before," Ash said as he straightened himself out, "Compared to how my Charizard affectionately greets me by blasting my face with Flamethrower, that Water Gun was hardly a love tap." Ash turned back around, still in it and still willing to protect the children until they could be escorted back home to safety. "I'm far from finished!" Ash declared defiantly, "All of us are far from finished!"
Dawn and Brock, reassured of Ash's ability to continue, went back to dealing with the remains of the Bibarel horde, ready to take it down by any means necessary.
...
Kenny, despite not having any Pokémon able to match Giratina power for power, was actually able to do pretty well against Giratina. Giratina, despite all of its overwhelming power it had against Wigglytuff, was still a wild Pokémon who didn't know that not only were two of its attacks useless due to how typings worked, but Kenny not having actually done any damage yet made Pain Split redundant as well.
By the time Giratina decided to try using Aura Sphere, Wigglytuff's special defense had already been boosted to the max, and its partial fairy typing kept the attack from being super effective. "Alright Wigglytuff, hit 'em with Thunder Wave!" Kenny ordered, having Wigglytuff cast a weak jolt of electricity at the Renegade Pokémon, which ended up paralyzing it. Giratina tried to use Dragon Claw again, still not knowing that or why it was useless against Wigglytuff, but paralysis kicked in and kept Giratina from attacking.
Kenny looked to his gangster Wigglytuff; it did take some good damage from Giratina's Aura Sphere just now, but Wigglytuff still looked to be in it a fair bit. Kenny figured that the special defense boosting battle items, as well as Wigglytuff's partial fairy typing, must be doing a lot of work here. "Wigglytuff, let's start nailing Giratina with a series of Disarming Voice attacks!" Kenny ordered.
Wigglytuff responded by firing off a few Disarming Voice attacks, slamming into Giratina a few times. Giratina tried to attack, but the first time paralysis kicked in, then the second time it tried to use Dragon Claw again, the third time paralysis kicked in again, and the fourth time it tried using Shadow Force again and was not struck with paralysis but the attack failed due to Wigglytuff being immune to both of Giratina's STAB moves.
Giratina was able to land a Pain Split, and it finally did some notable damage to Wigglytuff. But Kenny was able to pop a Max Potion onto his Pokémon to get it right back up to snuff. The Renegade Pokémon then used Dragon Claw again, which failed because Wigglytuff being a fairy type made it immune to dragon attacks. Another Disarming Voice smacked right into Giratina's face, making it stumble back as it tried to get back up straight as much as its paralysis would let it.
Even with how well he and Wigglytuff have been able to occupy Giratina's time and focus, as well as how it was hurt and paralyzed, Kenny knew that Giratina was far from finished. "...Here's hoping where the next phase of my crazy plan will work," Kenny muttered to himself, hoping like hell that what he had in store next will help to resolve the Battle of Sendoff Spring.
...
It was Brock commanding Sudowoodo and Croagunk and Dawn commanding Tsukune as they picked off what was left of the Bibarel horde. By Dawn's estimation, about one-fourth of the horde of Bibarel were left. "Tsukune, fire your Power Gem attack into that group of Bibarel!" Dawn said as she pointed out the way.
Taking aim, Dawn's named Palkia fired Power Gem into the group of Bibarel, taking out a good few of them. Meanwhile, Sudowoodo and Croagunk were running around, whacking Bibarels on their heads with Hammer Arm and Brick Break. "We're getting them whittled down!" Brock shouted, "We can get this wrapped up soon!"
"Looks like it!" Dawn yelled back, "Just a few more and we'll be-"
Dawn was cut off when she and Brock heard helicopters fly on in overhead, making them, their Pokémon, and the remaining wild Bibarels all stop what they were doing and look up. "Kids! Is that really all of you?!" the familiar voice of Professor Carolina from Celestic Town called out with a megaphone, "Wow, my granddaughter wasn't kidding me when she said that the girl had captured Palkia at Spear Pillar!"
The helicopters landed and, while the propellers were still spinning, the people inside of the helicopters all got out and proceeded to run in to help Dawn and Brock. It turned out that they were all researchers from the Historical Research Center in Celestic Town, as well as a group of lab workers from Sandgem Town, with that group being led by Professor Rowan himself.
"You kids can relax now," Professor Rowan said, giving Dawn and Brock a reassuring smile, "We got this for you.
After the researchers using their Pokémon defeated the remaining wild Bibarel, Dawn and Brock met up with Ash and explained everything to Professors Rowan and Carolina. "... Yes, I have heard of the incident of young children being spirited away by a Dusknoir in that area," Rowan said, "So it turns out that Dusknoir and the Dusclops were all trying to fortify and defend territory they claimed against a large group of Bibarel who wanted to fight for the land."
Carolina looked over at where the partly constructed, partly ruined, fortress hut was standing. "It looks like their efforts had been partly wrecked," Carolina remarked, "Or rather the efforts of all of the kids they had enthralled to do their bidding."
"The ghost Pokémon weren't meaning any real harm to the children," Brock pointed out, "And they even had the children back away before the fighting started."
The professors looked around the Sendoff Spring area before turning to look at one another. "...What do you say on the space here, Professor Carolina?" Rowan asked.
"That I can't blame the two large groups of Pokémon for waging war on one another for the territory," Carolina replied, her tone mildly grim, "There simply isn't enough room here to fulfill the needs of both groups. That and their vastly different typings will make sharing the space a pipe dream. My opinion is that the best option that we have is to look into relocating the Bibarels over to the Great Marsh in Pastoria City. The habitat there is better for them, and there's already Bibarels living there."
That tool the present heroes by surprise. "You're going to relocate all of the Bibarels here over to the Great Marsh?" Ash asked.
The professors nodded in the affirmative. "We'll have to talk it over with the people running the Great Marsh, but once we explain things to them I'm certain they'll see things from our point of view," Rowan replied. Looking around, Rowan asked, "Say, where's that Kenny boy who I remember giving a Turtwig to a while ago? I know he travels with you."
"Oh shoot! Kenny!" Dawn exclaimed as she turned around to look for where Kenny was at. To her alarm, Dawn saw her friend and his gangster Wigglytuff laying on the ground, both breathing heavily out of exhaustion, as a few people from Professor Carolina's crew looked over them. The reborn trainer, after recalling Tsukune, made a mad dash for where Kenny was laying on the ground, having clearly exhausted himself.
Dawn, with Ash, Brock, and the shiny Dusclops following her, reached where Kenny was laying on the ground with Wigglytuff laying next to him on his right. "Kenny! Are you and Wigglytuff alright?!" Dawn began, "Where did-"
Dawn was cut off when Kenny, shooting his right arm straight up into the air, showed that he was clutching an expanded Ultra Ball in his right hand. "Twenty Ultra Balls!" Kenny exclaimed, "It took me twenty flippin' Ultra Balls! But I did it!" Laughing a bit while sounding partly exhausted, Kenny said, "Wigglytuff and I were able to get Black here to join the cringe posse!"
Realizing what Kenny was getting at, Dawn took a step back out of shock. "Kenny, did... did you actually catch Giratina?!"
"Giratina?!" Carolina practically exclaimed, taking a step back out of shock, "As in the legendary Pokémon Giratina, said to be on par with Dialga and Palkia?!"
Kenny sat up straight, with great difficulty due to how exhausted he was, and called out his newly caught Giratina to show that he wasn't pulling anyone's chains. "Yeah, Black here is rolling with me and my cringe posse now," Kenny said, a tired but amused grin on his face, "And we'll be rolling together moving forward, mark my words!" Kenny's named Giratina, although it was still hurt and paralyzed, gave an affirmative roar skywards as it agreed with its trainer.
"A-Amazing!" Carolina stammered a bit as she and the others watched Kenny recall Black first, "This will push study into the lore and history of Sinnoh mythology even further along than what we had going already!"
"We need rest, food, and some medical treatment first!" Kenny said as he fell back and landed laying on the ground again. Seeing that Kenny was more or less out of it, Dawn and the other boys couldn't help but laugh in amusement at Kenny being... well, Kenny.
The following morning, actually a few hours after the chaos at Sendoff Spring was settled, the heroes and the rescued children were escorted back to the seaside town near Valor Lakefront, where the heroes reunited the missing children with their parents. While that was going on, Johanna met up with the heroes. "Dawn! Boys! Are you all alright?" Johanna asked, looking a bit frantic.
"We desperately need to rest, mom," Dawn replied as she let out a tired huff, "Kenny and his Pokémon especially. But no seriously injuries here."
Johanna let out a sigh of relief. "Well that's good news. And thank you kids again for saving all of the young children." Dawn, as she and the other heroes settled down at a table to have some morning coffee with Johanna, proceeded to tell her everything, although they left out Kenny having caught Giratina; they haven't even informed Johanna that Dawn had caught Palkia yet. They had no idea how Johanna would react to the news that two preteens, with one of said preteens being her own daughter no less, had each caught a legendary Pokémon.
Even so, they had certainly given Johanna more than enough excitement for her for the day, and it wasn't even nine in the morning yet. "Yeah, you kids are going to rest, alright," Johanna said, her tone brokering no quarter, "You've done more than enough."
"Yeah, I wouldn't object to some sleep right about now," Ash replied as he got up from the table he, the other heroes, and Johanna were all seated at. To the immediate alarm of everyone else, Ash began falling over face first after he got a few feet from the table, with a similarly tired Pikachu also slipping off of Ash's right shoulder.
"Ash!" Dawn exclaimed worriedly, the alarm busting through some of Dawn's own exhaustion. However, to everyone's surprise, both Ash and Pikachu were caught before either of them ended up hitting the ground. What really surprised them was that it was the shiny Dusclops from Sendoff Spring who had caught both Ash and Pikachu.
"It's the shiny Dusclops who helped Ash protect the children during the battle over at Sendoff Spring," Brock said as he and the others watched Dusclops lay Ash down on a nearby bench before laying Pikachu down on Ash's chest.
Ash, still partly awake, saw who it was who saved him and Pikachu from suffering a nasty fall just now. "Dus... Dusclops..." Ash said in a tired tone before he passed out from sheer exhaustion. Right away, the shiny Dusclops panicked at seeing Ash pass out like that, and immediately turned to look at the others, seemingly frantic.
Smiling gently, Johanna said, "It's quite alright, Dusclops. Ash and his Pikachu are simply exhausted is all. They just need time to sleep." Dusclops took Johanna's words at face value and relaxed, looking to be breathing a sigh of relief. The heroes were all exhausted from the ordeal they had all just gone through, so they were led slash partly carried to the nearby Pokémon Center, where their Pokémon were treated while they themselves were rested in some bunk rooms in the back.
Later that day, around late afternoon to early evening, the heroes had rested and were back to attention. Of course, this saw them eating mainly, as they all had gone without eating for well over half a day. They were eating in a dining area outside of the local Pokémon Center, with quite the spread to dig in to, when Johanna came over to see how they were doing. "Well I'm glad to see that you kids are doing alright," Johanna said, an amused smirk on her face.
"Oh yeah, Mrs. B," Kenny replied, "And according to Professor Carolina who wanted to personally oversee it, all of our Pokémon have been fully rested and treated."
Johanna looked a bit curious at what Kenny had said. "Professor Carolina? As in the lead researcher working at the Historical Research Center over in Celestic Town? I mean I heard that she was in town here, but why would she personally oversee the Pokémon of you kids being treated by Nurse Joy?"
Shrugging, Kenny said, "I think it has to do with Black and Tsukune, but that's besides the point." The reborn trainer turned his attention to Ash, given that the shiny Dusclops was standing next to where Ash sat at the table. "What I'd like to know is why the shiny Dusclops has taken to following Ash around."
Ash turned to look at the shiny Dusclops, who nodded at him. "I..." Ash began, trying to put the pieces together in his head, "...I think that Dusclops here wants to come with me."
"A rare Pokémon like the shiny Dusclops wants to go with you?" Johanna said, looking surprised.
"Well I saw that Dusclops here saw it when Ash shielded a young kid from the Sendoff Spring incident from getting hit by a wild Bibarel's Water Gun attack," Brock said, "And Dusclops here was pretty keen on making sure the kids were safe. Maybe Dusclops has grown to admire Ash for his bravery and willingness to put himself on the line to protect young children."
The shiny Dusclops cried out in agreement as it tried hugging Ash as best it could; it had hands but lacked arms, so the hug was very close. After the hug broke away, Ash looked at the shiny Dusclops. "Are you sure you want to come with me?" Ash asked. The shiny Dusclops nodded in the affirmative before Ash replied, "Alright then." Ash then took out a spare pokéball, expanded it, and threw it at the shiny Dusclops while saying, "Go pokéball!"
Dusclops went into the pokéball before it fell to the ground, where it shook around for a bit. After a few shakes, the pokéball made a ping sound, indicating capture. Ash then picked up the pokéball and held it up as he cheered, "Alright! I caught a Dusclops!"
"This calls for a celebration!" Kenny declared, "Let's party!"
"Kenny, we're still pretty tired," Dawn pointed out, "We can celebrate Ash catching his shiny Dusclops later, after we're all fully rested."
As Kenny relented, the heroes and Johanna quietly applauded Ash's capture of Dusclops, who was sent to Professor Oak's lab in Pallet Town, Kanto, due to Ash's party being full at the moment. After Ash's Dusclops was sent away, the heroes and Johanna heard a woman's voice call out to them, "Excuse me young lady at the table, but are you Dawn Berlitz?"
Everyone looked over when they heard the woman speak up. As such, they saw a formally dressed woman wearing a deep burgundy long sleeved dress, with puffed up shoulder areas and white buttoned ends on the sleeves, and the dress reached her ankles. For footwear, the woman wore simple black heels. The woman had her pale lavender hair in a bun held in place with a frilly band, although she did allow thin strands of bangs to frame her face.
Brock, upon seeing this woman, instantly went into flirt mode and, due to Croagunk still being treated, Ash himself got up and chopped Brock on the back of the head to snap him back to reality. The woman ignored all of that, her focus squarely on Dawn. "...Yes, you're Dawn Berlitz, alright," the woman said, "My lady and I have seen you in the news a few times, mostly related to how you gave efforts to stop that horrendous Team Galactic from carrying out their schemes."
"Excuse me," Johanna began, a hint of suspicion in her expression, as she got the mystery woman's attention, "But what manner of business do you have with my daughter? Also, while we're on the subject, who even are you?"
Nodding once to Johanna, the mystery woman said, "Apologies, I was getting ahead of myself." To the group, the woman said, "My name is Freesia, and my lady, Princess Salvia, wishes to invite Dawn to where she is staying in Arrowroot Palace over in Arrowroot Town." Looking to the rest of the group, Freesia went on, "The rest of you may come as well. Given the favor that Princess Salvia wishes to ask of Dawn, I figure it'd be for the best."
Johanna went a bit wide eyed with shock. "Wait, you mean the actual Princess Salvia is over in Arrowroot Town? I mean I heard that she was doing a royal tour of Sinnoh, but for her to be so close!" Getting a hold of herself, Johanna went on, "Anyway, what business would Princess Salvia have with my daughter?"
"Well basically," Freesia began, "The long story short is that she wishes to make Dawn a princess."
END, CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
Author's notes;
Here the battle for Sendoff Spring is concluded, with the calvary coming in at the last minute to help the heroes deal with the last of the Bibarel horde. The professors realize that the fight for territory wasn't going to end without outside intervention, so plans to move the Bibarel population over to the Great Marsh are put into play. The big shocker of the battle for Sendoff Spring, though, is most likely the fact that Kenny caught Giratina and added it to his cringe posse, meaning he'll have to carefully monitor everything he does with Giratina, much like Dawn with her Palkia.
The surprises keep coming as, the following day, the shiny Dusclops decided to go with Ash, netting the kanto region native a new catch. And soon after that, Freesia comes over, having tracked Dawn down to that seaside town, in order to recruit her help for something that Princess Salvia wishes to do while in Sinnoh. The events of the filler episode where Dawn and Salvia swap places for a day will be covered in the next chapter, so keep your eyes peeled.
