Pokémon: Sinnoh no Isekai
Chapter fifty-five: Preparing to go onwards towards further adventure
After the reborn trainers arrived in Sandgem Town, they made their way right into Rowan's lab. There, they met a young girl looking at a Turtwig, a Chimchar, and a Piplup as she was writing down some notes on them, not even having seen Dawn and Kenny walk in. "So like I was saying on the way here, my main man," Kenny said to Dawn as they entered Rowan's lab, getting the attention of the young girl in the process, "I feel like I got one more capture left in me here in Sinnoh before we-"
"Oh my gosh it's Champion Dawn!" the girl exclaimed, spotting the two reborn trainers and running right up to them, mostly to Dawn. "Hi, I'm Shinko," the girl said as she introduced herself, "And I'm aiming to start on my own Pokémon journey soon but I'm not sure if I want to be a coordinator or go for the Sinnoh league and Professor Rowan said that he had a special guest coming by while I was here to help guide me and oh my gosh I just realized he was talking about you and-"
Kenny had to reach forward with his right index finger to sush Shinko up by placing his index finger over her mouth. "Geez, you're going a mile a minute, little lady," Kenny said, "I'm surprised that you didn't run out of breath."
Dawn smiled gently in mild amusement as Kenny removed his finger from Shinko's closed lips. "She's just a younger kid excited about the prospect of getting to go on a journey with Pokémon," Dawn remarked to Kenny, "Cut her some slack."
Shinko smiled in appreciation at Dawn defending her. Turning to look at Shinko, Dawn said, "So what are up to right now?" Dawn asked.
"I'm trying to decide what Pokémon to pick as my starter," Shinko explained, "Between the choices of Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. But I'm not sure which one to pick. I also have no clue if I want to go into contests or gyms." Shinko looked down, a mildly discouraged look on her face.
Dawn smiled, reached forward to gently pat Shinko on the head. "...It's not as easy for some as it is for others," Dawn began, "But that's no reason to be down. Regardless of what Pokémon here you pick as your first, and regardless of what path you end up taking, so long as you play fair and never forget to love your Pokémon, I'm certain you'll do fine."
"A very standup thing to say, Dawn!" the familiar voice of Rowan called out, making everyone turn to look at him as he came up over to them. To Shinko, Rowan said, "You ought to take Dawn's words just now to heart, Shinko. She's a fine young lady who knows what she's doing." Giving off a hum of amusement, Rowan added, "But then again, she did become champion of our region very recently."
Shinko smiled, nodded once to Rowan, before turning to look back at Dawn. "Could you at least give me some ideas that might help me make a better decision?" Shinko asked, "Like telling me about the three Pokémon here, or what choices you made in your career as a Pokémon trainer so far and why you made said choices?"
The reborn trainer nodded in agreement, seeing no harm in giving some pointers. "Well first, we ought to discuss the Pokémon that Professor Rowan here offers to new trainers looking to get out into the world," Dawn said. Turning to Rowan, Dawn asked, "Is there somewhere here in your lab where Kenny and I can bring out Roshi and Chi-Chi to show to Shinko here?" Rowan nodded before gesturing for everyone to follow him.
In a larger and more open room in the lab, Dawn and Kenny had their respective first Pokémon out. "This is Chi-Chi, my Infernape," Dawn said to Shinko while gesturing to Chi-Chi, "She was actually given to me as a Chimchar by Professor Rowan here, back when I first started out as a trainer. She's my first ever Pokémon."
"As for myself," Kenny said to Shinko before gesturing to Roshi, "This here is Roshi, my Torterra. Professor R here gave him to me as a Turtwig back when I first became a trainer. He's been a solid member of my cringe posse since day one, actually being the first ever member."
Nodding once, Dawn said, "Chi-Chi and Roshi ought to give you an idea of what to expect if you end up choosing either Chimchar or Turtwig as your starter." Folding her arms over her chest, Dawn went on, "I kind of wish Barry was here, since I've learned he's got an Empoleon, which he could of shown you to give you an idea of what to expect if you chose Piplup as your starter."
"Or this one interesting young man from Unova," Rowan spoke up.
Hearing that, Dawn and Kenny both turned to look at the professor. "...A boy from Unova?" Dawn asked, sounding surprised.
Rowan nodded in confirmation. "Indeed. Although born and raised in Unova, he decided to start on his Pokémon journey here in Sinnoh. When I asked him why after he explained himself, he told me that he was set on starting off with Piplup as his first Pokémon because it eventually evolves into Empoleon, which he said he wanted because of how much he liked steel type Pokémon."
Dawn, and to a lesser extent Kenny, was surprised by this development, a boy from Unova starting off on his Pokémon journey in Sinnoh rather than in his home region. Dawn immediately thought that it was that excitable Cameron boy; it made sense, and Cameron in the anime in Dawn's and Kenny's previous lives had Ferrothorn and Lucario. Also, Cameron was indeed excitable and had a hard time sitting still and thinking clearly and rationally; starting in Sinnoh rather than in Unova seemed to Dawn to be something Cameron would do.
She's just not sure why, especially since she didn't remember him doing that in the anime in her previous life. Dawn was about to ask for more info, but before she could get a word out, one of the lab workers came running over to the group. "Professor Rowan!" the lab worker said in something of a panic, "The Chimchar and Piplup got into a fight, broke a window, and ran off!"
"Oh geez, this is terrible!" Shinko exclaimed, looking panicked.
Turning to Dawn and Kenny, Rowan said, "Dawn, Kenny, would you two be willing to go out and track down those two mischievous Pokémon and bring them back?"
Kenny gave the professor a salute before saying, "Aye aye, Professor R!"
Dawn nodded once in agreement. "Should be easy for Kenny and I to get those two to behave."
"Oh, can I come along to take notes?" Shinko asked Dawn and Kenny while holding up her notepad and a pencil, "I figure seeing two top trainers, one of which being Sinnoh's champion even, in action would be a valuable learning experience."
"It would be a valuable learning experience for someone who is junior to you two," Rowan pointed out, "Although Shinko, if they do agree to take you, listen to what they say and let them handle any dangerous situations."
"Well I certainly have no problem with Shinko coming along," Dawn replied.
Dawn's remark drew a cheer out of Shinko. "Hooray! Champion Dawn doesn't mind me coming along!"
Shrugging, Kenny said, "It's not the first time my main man here took on a kouhai."
Later, Dawn and Kenny, with Shinko following along behind them, were out searching some nearby woods. Dawn and Kenny had Leni and Goofy out to help track down the runaway Chimchar and Piplup, the former using her aura powers to sense the surroundings, and the latter was sniffing about to try to find the scents of the missing Pokémon by using his superior sense of smell as a canine Pokémon.
"I saw Champion Dawn on TV a few times," Shinko said, "Like when she took part in that contest in Arrowroot Town. But most of the time I saw her compete in and win the Lily of the Valley Conference, then I saw her defeat all of the Sinnoh elite four, then I saw her defeat Cynthia and become the new champion of Sinnoh."
Dawn played off how much Shinko was gushing over accompanying her. "I'm... still getting used to people seeing me on TV. It's not something that I was counting on happening."
As the trio continued to walk, Goofy barked at something that was a head; jogging up, the trio spotted the Chimchar and Piplup getting into a tussle with one another. "Oi, you two!" Dawn called out, getting the attention of the two starter Pokémon as Leni and Goofy ran in to cut off their escape and bring them in. However, before the two evolved Pokémon got halfway, they stopped as if sensing something and jumped back, with Leni using Psychic to levitate the two starter Pokémon over to the group.
The Chimchar and especially the Piplup looked annoyed, but both changed their attitudes when a bunch of wild Ariados jumped down out of the trees and surrounded the group. All of the Ariados looked right at Chimchar and Piplup, and they all cried out angrily. "Aiiiieee!" Shinko screamed in fright, "It's a bunch of wild Ariados! There's got to be dozens of them!" Suddenly, the Chimchar and Piplup began floating up into the air by Psychic again, catching the attention of the group. "Hey Dawn, why is your Lucario floating Chimchar and Piplup again?" Shinko asked.
Dawn looked to Leni quickly and saw that she wasn't the one using Psychic. "It's not Leni who is doing this!" Looking around at the scene, Dawn soon spotted the true culprit; a shiny Ariados was the one levitating the Chimchar and Piplup up with Psychic. Having the two starter Pokémon both floating in the air with its Psychic, the shiny Ariados waved its front right leg at them while it gave an annoyed, angry cry.
"That shiny Ariados has the Chimchar and Piplup!" Dawn said, "We need to rescue them!"
"But with all of these other Ariados primed to pounce on us?!" Shinko nearly exclaimed.
"That's why there's multiple experienced trainers here," Dawn said as she called out Chi-Chi and Akiza to back Leni up. "Kenny, can you focus on saving the Chimchar and Piplup from the shiny Ariados?"
"Got it!" Kenny said while tossing up a pokéball, "Okay, Zarbon! Let's make it cringe!" Kenny called his named Machamp out to assist in rescuing the starter Pokémon. "Goofy, shoot that purple Ariados down with Dark Pulse!" Kenny said, "Zarbon, when the Psychic hold on Chimchar and Piplup is dropped and they fall, I want you to catch them before they hit the ground!"
Acting as his trainer ordered, Goofy fired a Dark Pulse at the shiny Ariados, knocking it down out of the tree and breaking the Psychic hold on the Chimchar and Piplup. As the two starter Pokémon fell down, Zarbon dashed in and caught both of them. While Zarbon was doing that, Goofy ran on over to where the shiny Ariados was trying to pick itself back up, and jumped onto the shiny Ariados to keep it pinned. Given that it was laying on its stomach and its head pointed in the same direction as Goofy's, the shiny Ariados couldn't take aim at Goofy with any of its attacks.
As for what Dawn's Pokémon were doing, they were knocking out the normal wild Ariados one by one. Leni and Akiza hung back, picking off many Ariados with a mix of Akiza's Extrasensory and Shadow Ball, and Leni's Psychic, Dark Pulse, and Flash Cannon. As for Chi-Chi, each Fire Punch and Thunder Punch she used knocked out an Ariados. As the mass horde of Ariados was whittled down to a single digit number by Dawn's Pokémon, Shinko could only look on in utter amazement.
"...Wow," Shinko muttered to herself, "Champion Dawn really is the best."
...
Within short order, the entire horde of wild Ariados had been defeated. Dawn and Kenny, figuring that the shiny Ariados was the horde leader, turned to look at it while Goofy still had it pinned and Zarbon held the Chimchar and Piplup under his upper left and right arms like they were sacs of potatoes. "You and your horde here weren't going to eat the Chimchar and Piplup, were you?" Kenny asked the shiny Ariados.
The pinned Pokémon briskly shook its head before stamping the ground in front of it with its front right leg. "...You... were just going to beat them up?" Dawn asked, drawing an affirmative nod out of the shiny Ariados, "Why did you Ariados all want to beat up Chimchar and Piplup?"
The shiny Ariados then proceeded to quickly draw some crude drawings in the dirt that the humans could still tell were supposed to be berries, then it stamped on the drawing in a line before stopping. "...They... accidentally trampled through where you guys kept your food in their scuffling?" Shinko guessed, drawing an affirmative nod out of the shiny Ariados. Turning to look at where Chimchar and Piplup were still being held by Zarbon, Shinko said, "Well you two own the Ariados here an apology. And you also ought to stop fighting with each other!"
"Well if it's food that the wild Ariados are concerned about, I bet that we can call in some wildlife preserve workers who can host these Ariados," Kenny said, "Heck, those Bibarel from Sendoff Spring were all relocated to the Great Marsh." Looking to the shiny Ariados, Kenny said with a look of smirking amusement on his face, "As for you in particular Ariados, your concerns for being fed will be settled if you join my cringe posse!"
Dawn looked to Kenny, a surprised look on her face. "You want to catch that Ariados?" Dawn asked.
"Well I did say I felt I had one more capture left in me before we go to other regions to seek out further adventure there," Kenny began, "So I-" Kenny was cut off when the shiny Ariados was able to get up out from under Goofy. It was still beaten and tired, but it turned to look to Kenny before it gave some excited sounding cries before nodding. "...The prospect of adventure has you excited, ehh?" Kenny asked the shiny Ariados.
"That and you also offered to keep it fed," Dawn pointed out. The shiny Ariados, while still looking up at Kenny, pointed its left front leg at Dawn while nodding, indicating that Dawn's point just now was also valid. With an amused smirk, Kenny took out a spare pokéball, expanded it, and tossed it at the shiny Ariados. It went into the pokéball which then fell to the ground and shook for a bit before it made a ping sound, indicating capture.
As Kenny cheered over catching the shiny Ariados, he went over to collect the pokéball his new capture was in. He picked it up to scan it with his pokédex. "Another guy," Kenny remarked as he saw what gender his shiny Ariados is, "Very well. I shall be naming him Spider-Frog."
Shinko looked confused. "Spider-Frog?"
"The name of a legendary superhero," Kenny explained, "Who valued the five B's in life."
"Shinko is too young to learn more about the legend of Spider-Frog," Dawn said firmly, knowing full well what her friend was talking about. With that issue settled, the trio proceeded to take the Chimchar and Piplup back to Professor Rowan's lab, with Dawn making a mental note to inform the professor about the wild Ariados to see if he'd be able to do something about it.
Back at Rowan's lab, the trio returned Chimchar and Piplup, as well as explain the situation with the wild Ariados to Rowan and the lab workers. The lab workers were particularly amazed that Kenny had caught the shiny Ariados, with one lab worker saying that Spider-Frog is the third shiny that was caught by Kenny. Spider-Frog also ate the last taco in a taco lunch that a female lab worker left out in the open while she went to use the bathroom.
When Kenny said that it was in Spider-Frog's nature to like tacos, Dawn being curious asked Kenny what Spider-Frog's nature was. Checking it, Kenny saw that his shiny Ariados had a jolly nature, the Sniper ability, and came knowing Leech Life, Cross Poison, and Night Slash in addition to the Psychic it had been seen used when it floated Chimchar and Piplup up earlier so he could scold the two of them for trampling through the food stores of the wild Ariados.
Speaking of, Rowan was able to make arrangements to have the wild Ariados looked after, mostly in regards to replacing their food that the Chimchar and Piplup accidentally ruined in their scuffling earlier. After everything was settled, Dawn and Kenny turned to look at Shinko. "So what say you on your experience here today?" Dawn asked.
"...I think that I ought to wait a bit longer before I actually start off as a Pokémon trainer," Shinko replied, "There's still a few things that I want to learn and take note of. However..." Smiling as she turned to fully face Dawn, Shinko went on, "...I'm feeling that I'll want to follow in your footsteps as a trainer, Champion Dawn."
"Ah, so the Pokémon League for you it is," Kenny said, "Mozel tov. Oh, and you don't have to refer to Dawn as Champion Dawn every time."
Shinko looked confused as she turned her attention to Kenny. "I don't? But how do I show her the respect she deserves? Especially considering how much I've learned from her from just today."
"Since you're the junior student to Dawn's senior student," Kenny began to explain, "The more proper way for you to address her would be to call her Dawn-senpai."
"Kenny," Dawn began as she turned to look at her friend, "Shinko doesn't-"
"Doesn't what, Dawn-senpai?" Shinko asked, cutting Dawn off as she turned to look at her.
Sighing gently, Dawn replied, "Nevermind." Although there were some bumps here and there, Dawn and Kenny were able to resolve things with Shinko, adding her to their list of known friends and allies. With all other matters of business taken care of, the two reborn trainers left Sandgem Town to head back to Twinleaf Town. There they'd meet back up with Ash and Brock at the Twinleaf port, where the group would take a boat to the Kanto region.
Smiling upon hearing the two trainers once again mention their aim to go to Kanto, Rowan said, "Well it's a good thing you got those passports now."
That afternoon, all of the heroes were on the deck of a boat taking them to the Kanto region. Dawn and Kenny were telling Ash and Brock about their adventure with Shinko, and Kenny even called out Spider-Frog to show to the other boys. "Wow, Kenny," Brock said, "It's amazing that you own three shiny Pokémon now."
"And a legendary Pokémon as well," Ash pointed out.
Kenny, with a somewhat smug look of amusement on his face, replied, "Well Spider-Frog still needs some work to be a fully fleshed out member of the cringe posse, but all of the training and gym challenging we'll be doing on the gym challenge tour ought to get him caught up."
With a mildly amused and mischievous chuckle, Ash said, "Kenny, you ought to consider using your Ariados and your Scizor if you end up challenging the gym in Cerulean City when you and Dawn get to Kanto."
Dawn, and Kenny to a lesser extent, already knew due to knowledge from their previous lives that Misty hates slash is afraid of bug Pokémon, and could tell Ash was trying to get them to use bug Pokémon against Misty if they challenge her, partly to make Misty freak out upon seeing bug Pokémon. Still, Ash and Brock didn't know that Dawn and Kenny knew, so the reborn trainers had to play along. "I... take it that the gym that's located in Cerulean City uses Pokémon weak to the bug type?" Dawn asked.
Ash was about to open his mouth to explain something, but he got cut off when a girl came up onto the deck of the boat that they were on. She had a pink polo shirt with the collar and sleeves a darker shade than the body, a pair of pale cream colored shorts, and she wore white socks and brown slip ons. She also wore her brown hair in a neat chin length cut, and there was a bluish greenish colored headband in her hair.
Spotting the heroes, the girl went over to them. "Excuse me, but do any of you know where I can find a doctor on this ship?" the girl asked, clearly concerned.
"Why? What's wrong?" Brock asked, immediately turning to face the girl fully upon hearing her being so concerned.
Gesturing to herself, the girl said, "First off, I believe I ought to tell you who I am, given it sort of relates to why I need help. My name is Normajean, and I'm a Pokémon Day Care employee, taking care of some baby Pokémon." The concern in Normajean's expression became more notable. "And that leads me to why I'm looking for a doctor. The baby Pokémon under my care have all fallen very sick. I'm not even sure how."
Stepping forward, Brock said, "I can help. I'm not a doctor per say, but my experience in being a Pokémon Breeder has helped me learn all about caring for Pokémon. I know a number of tricks in caring for Pokémon who have fallen sick."
"That's wonderful!" Normajean said, "Quickly, this way!" Normajean then led the heroes into the ship so that she could lead them, Brock mainly, to where the sick baby Pokémon were at, in the hopes of taking care of them.
A short while later, Normajean led the heroes to the room where the sick baby Pokémon were all being kept. There were a Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Teddiursa, Azurill, Smoochum, and Wynaut. "You think they were hit by attacks that poisoned them?" Kenny asked.
Normajean gently shook her head. "No, none of them have been in any fights ever, unless you count them playfully rough housing with one another."
Brock took a quick look at all of the baby Pokémon. "...It's not straight up poisoning, but rather a bad case of food poisoning." Turning to look at Normajean, Brock said, "It can still be cured the same way as if they were poisoned by attacks from other Pokémon, but while we're doing that we should also look into how they got food poisoning."
"Oh, they were given food by someone on the ship's kitchen staff," Normajean explained, "But there's no way the kitchen staff member would knowingly give the baby Pokémon bad food."
"We still ought to check that, just to cover base," Dawn remarked, "But first, caring for the baby Pokémon." Brock then told everyone that they needed to find Pecha Berries and Antidotes since the food poisoning can be cured the same way being normal poisoned can be cured. The heroes aside from Brock who stayed with the baby Pokémon went about the ship, asking anyone they ran into for spare Peacha Berries and Antidotes.
They were soon directed to the cargo hold, where they found a crate full of Peacha Berries. Kenny was about to have Zarbon pick up the entire crate and carry it back, until Dawn pointed out that they don't need that many Pecha Berries; they can simply open the crate and take, like, ten Peacha Berries max for what Brock needed. Dawn and Kenny came back with the Peacha Berries at the same time Ash returned with a bag of Heal Powder and a Lava Cookie that were provided to him.
"Oh, this will be plenty," Brock said as he got to work preparing all of the ingredients to make medicine for the baby Pokémon.
The other heroes and Normajean watched as Brock diligently worked. "Wow, you look like you got the makings for an effective Pokémon Doctor," Normajean commented, catching Brock's attention for a moment before he resumed working. After a short while, Brock got everything ready and the medicine was distributed to the baby Pokémon, with Normajean, Brock, Ash, Dawn, Kenny, and for some odd reason Zarbon in a female nurse's outfit gave medicine to Cleffa, Igglybuff, Teddiursa, Azurill, Smoochum, and Wynaut respectively.
After those baby Pokémon were cared for, Brock who has been aided by his Happiny this entire time moved on to try to give the medicine to Pichu. However, despite taking the medicine, Pichu didn't look like it was feeling better. "...I think Pichu might also be suffering from an allergic reaction to the food that gave it and the other baby Pokémon food poisoning," Brock said, his tone and expression grim, "Did we find out what food was given to them?"
"I did," Ash said, "As it turned out, they were given some food by a kindly old man working in the kitchen, and the food turned out to have been expired. He had no idea the food he gave to the baby Pokémon had gone bad and is truly sorry for what happened."
Brock looked on at where the Pichu laid, still not feeling well. Brock wished that there was more that he could do to help Pichu, and even growled a bit in frustration. Happiny saw that Brock was upset about not being able to do more for Pichu. Turning to look at Pichu, Happiny gave a desperate cry, right before she started glowing brightly in a white light. "Oh snap!" Kenny exclaimed, "Happiny is evolving right now!" Everyone looked on as Brock's Happiny was evolving, growing bigger, changing shape. When the process was complete, Happiny had evolved into Chansey.
"Woah, check it out!" Ash said, "Happiny evolved into Chansey!" Ash then checked Chansey out with his pokédex, and through that the heroes learned Chansey can use a move called Soft-Boiled.
Getting an idea, Brock said, "Chansey, use Soft-Boiled on Pichu!" Doing as told, Chansey used its move to cast a soothing glow on Pichu, which eased Pichu's discomfort quickly. With Pichu recovering and at ease, the heroes and Normajean all breathed sighs of relief. Seeing that all of the baby Pokémon were now sleeping soundly, Brock said, "I say that we leave them be for now. They'll recover soon enough now that they're cured."
The heroes and Normajean all looked relieved that the baby Pokémon were all taken care of, so after a call was made to a Nurse Joy in the Kanto region, they proceeded to let the baby Pokémon rest. As for Brock in particular, though, he looked on with a hint of regretful guilt in his expression. Even with what all he knew from being a Pokémon breeder about taking care of Pokémon while they were sick, he couldn't do exactly enough to help the baby Pokémon.
...And that's when he started thinking about something Normajean had said.
END, CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE
Author's notes;
This chapter covers the events of the episode with Shinko, going slightly different in execution but still ultimately having the same ending of Shinko holding off for a bit on becoming a trainer; it also sees Kenny add a shiny new member to his cringe posse. Most of the events of the episode where Brock considers becoming a Pokémon Doctor are also covered because it's a very vital point of development for his character; the parts with Team Rocket were adapted out, partly because I plan for the reborn trainers to encounter Team Rocket later, and partly because the chapter would of dragged on too long otherwise.
Even so, the last bits of the episode with Brock's vital character development have to be pushed off to the next chapter, where Ash leaves for Unova, and Dawn and Kenny begin to go through the Kanto region to get a start on their gym challenge tour. Take care.
