Chapter Sixty: Ninja Nonsense
Dawn and Kenny woke up in the local Pokémon Center in Fuchsia City, Kanto, and the first thing on their minds was how they were both aiming to earn their respective fifth Kanto gym badges each. Thus they would be hitting up the Fuchsia City gym on separate bids to earn their own Soul Badges from the local gym leader, Koga. "So I was thinking that by battle against Koga may see the debut of Hisoka in the badge earning scene," Kenny said to Dawn, "What do you think?"
Dawn folded her arms over her chest, gave Kenny a wry look. "...Given that he's a Mr. Mime which is dual psychic fairy, Hisoka is a bit of a gamble. He'll be strong against Koga's poison Pokémon with his psychic typing, but is weak to Koga's poison Pokémon in return due to his fairy typing. There's also how you literally just caught Hisoka a few days ago."
Kenny pounded a fist into his hand. "Hisoka proved to be feisty in the event where I caught him. I wanna see how far he'll go with that." Holding a hand to his chin, Kenny went on, "But then again it's not like I'm going to coast by on Hisoka alone. I'm also going to throw in Cell as well as Elay, given that Cell's immune to poison and Elay's super effective against it."
"You might wanna pick a fourth Pokémon, just to be safe," Dawn advised, "I think that Koga uses four Pokémon in gym battles." Dawn remembered as such from the video games in her previous life, and wasn't too sure about Koga from the anime. As for Dawn, she's feeling like using Leni, Albedo, Scorpion, and Chi-Chi as her four, each of them coming along for various reasons that the reborn trainer had.
Kenny looked deep in concentration as he thought about how to go about tackling Koga's gym. "...I think that I'll do Hisoka, Cell, and Elay like I've already said," Kenny began, "And make Spider-Frog my fourth Pokémon."
"You're going to bring all of your shiny Pokémon with you to the gym battle against Koga," Dawn remarked, then after Kenny nodded in the affirmative, Dawn replied, "Alright, just don't be surprised if Koga freaks out in delight upon seeing Spider-Frog, given that he's a shiny Ariados which is part poison ty-"
"Ah, I heard it from Mr. Goodshow that you were in Kanto, Champion Dawn!" a male voice called out, cutting Dawn off and making both her and Kenny turn to look to see that they were greeted by Lance who, if Dawn remembered correctly, was champion of the Indigo League at this time. He was wearing his pre HGSS outfit, from what Dawn was able to see.
The reborn trainer gave Lance a wry look. Despite knowing who Lance is, Dawn figured that Lance may not know that she knew, so she decided to play dumb. "...Umm, I don't suppose I can get your name in return?" Dawn asked.
"Ah, I guess I wouldn't be known by everyone," Lance said, "Especially by a girl who I was told never stepped foot out of her home region of Sinnoh after defeating the prior reigning Sinnoh champion Cynthia and taking her title." Gesturing to himself, Lance went on, "My name is Lance, and I am the current champion of the Indigo League."
Giving Lance a wry look, Kenny asked, "Is there anything you need from my main man here?"
"I just wanted to meet with her," Lance replied, "After all, she did defeat Cynthia, a feat that I doubt even I could pull off." To Dawn, Lance said, "Well anyway Dawn, Mr. Goodshow also told me that you and a friend, who I'll assume is the boy here with you, are on something of a gym challenge tour across the other regions."
Dawn nodded in confirmation. "Yes. Kenny and I are going through Kanto right now on personal bids to earn eight Kanto gym badges. We've already each earned badges from Pewter City, Cerulean City, Vermilion City, and Celadon City." Holding her arms out to her sides, Dawn went on, "Now we're here in Fuchsia City."
"No doubt the both of you aim to challenge Koga," Lance remarked, "And he's actually part of why I'm here in Fuchsia City."
Both of the reborn trainers looked surprised. "...What do you mean?" Kenny asked.
Gesturing to the two reborn trainers, Lance explained, "Koga has been training and testing to move up from gym leader to elite four for the Indigo League. At the same time, he's been training his daughter Janine to inherit the position of Fuchsia City gym leader from him." Folding his arms over his chest, Lance said, "That's why I'm here. I'm going to personally test Koga and his daughter to see if they can both move up as Koga hopes."
"Ah, I get it," Kenny said, "Because you're basically like the head nacho trainer of the Indigo League."
"You mean head honcho," Dawn corrected dryly.
Lance chuckled in sincere amusement at the exchange between Dawn and Kenny. "Yes, yes, that is the idea," Lance said, then added while looking at Dawn and Kenny, "...Or at least, it was the plan I'd originally came into Fuchsia City with."
"What do you mean?" Dawn asked.
Gesturing to Dawn and Kenny, Lance said, "I was figuring, assuming of course that the both of you are okay with it, that I can call on you to assist me in testing Koga and Janine." Turning to look at Kenny, Lance said, "Dawn said that your name's Kenny, right?" After Kenny nodded in the affirmative, Lance said, "Very good. You will be used to test Koga's daughter Janine."
Kenny nodded once in understanding. "Sounds legit."
Turning to look at Dawn, Lance went on, "As for you Dawn, given that you're a champion, you'll be used to test Koga himself, as he's bound to be stronger and more experienced than Janine."
Dawn folded her arms over her chest. "...If I'm going to be facing an opponent who's at the level of an elite four member, I'd feel better if I was allowed to make some adjustments to what Pokémon I have on hand. My party's currently set up for facing a gym leader, not an elite four."
"Fair enough," Lance replied, "I'll be waiting for you at the Fuchsia City gym with Koga and Janine." Lance then took off from the Pokémon Center.
When the Indigo League champion was gone, Dawn turned to look at Kenny. "...Well I just had a change of plans," Dawn said dryly, "I need to rotate my party around so that I have my all-star team all on hand."
"Well don't you already have Leni?" Kenny asked.
Nodding once in the affirmative, Dawn went on, "As well as Chi-Chi. I'm going to have to rotate Albedo, Scorpion, Muten, and Kowalski out so I can rotate Cyrus, Germany, Akiza, and Tsukune in."
"You had your Turtwig and Piplup in your party?" Kenny asked.
"Ever since I first stepped foot in Kanto," Dawn confirmed, "But they aren't ready yet for serious battles. And since I'm slated to face a guy trying to test into the local elite four..."
Kenny nodded in understanding. "Yeah. Well, your quote unquote all-star team are the guys who led you to victory against Tobias who used nothing but legends, and then again against Cynthia who you took the Sinnoh champion title from. I'm sure you'll do fine with them against Koga."
"One can only hope," Dawn said as she went to rotate her party a bit before leaving the Pokémon Center with Kenny to go to the Fuchsia City gym.
A short while later, Dawn and Kenny both arrived at the Fuchsia City gym. They were greeted by a moderately stunning ninja woman identifying herself as Koga's younger sister Aya. "You look like that Dawn girl that our guest Lance described," Aya said as she greeted Dawn.
The reborn trainer nodded once in the affirmative. "Then I suppose that Lance also told you that my friend Kenny and I came here to Fuchsia City as part of the gym challenge tour we're doing."
"And that he roped you two into testing my brother and niece to see if they can become elite four and gym leader respectively," Aya said, "Yes. Lance said that he wants to test Koga first, so we'll be using the open battlefield outside instead of the dojo room." Dawn and Kenny nodded along as they let Aya lead them through the Fuchsia City gym.
...
Outside, Dawn and Kenny saw the open battlefield, with Koga already standing at one end, and Lance and Janine standing off to the side. "Ah, you came at last," Lance said upon spotting Dawn, "I hope that you're ready to make Koga work for it if he wants to score well enough to pass."
Koga shifted his gaze directly to Dawn as Kenny and Aya moved to join where Lance and Janine were already standing. "...I was already partly aware that you had claimed the title of champion of Sinnoh from the prior title holder," Koga said, "To think that the person I'd battle as part of my final test to see if I can move up to the elite four is the girl who defeated someone even Lance himself would be hard pressed to overcome. I will be tested hard, indeed."
Dawn nodded once before Lance stepped forward. "Since I came here to supervise the testing, I shall serve as referee," Lance said, "That being said, this battle will be between Koga, the current Fuchsia City gym leader and one who is testing to enter the Indigo elite four, versus Dawn Berlitz, the challenger to the gym and current champion of Sinnoh! Each trainer may use their whole parties, but one Pokémon at a time! The battle is over when all of one trainer's Pokémon have been rendered unable to battle!"
"Hang on," Aya said, "Since Koga's acting as the gym leader here but he's also testing to enter the Indigo elite four, will he be forced to not switch Pokémon until they're defeated like a gym leader or can he switch Pokémon whenever like an elite four?"
Lance opened his mouth as if to speak, but then immediately closed his mouth for a moment before speaking. "...That's actually a really good question." After a moment of thought, Lance said, "Since he's still a gym leader, he has to wait for his Pokémon to be defeated before he can switch them out. Dawn as the challenger can still switch her Pokémon out at any time." Throwing a hand up, Lance said, "Begin!"
"Crobat, I choose you!" Koga said, sending out his Crobat first thing.
"Alright, Cyrus!" Dawn said as she sent her Staraptor out while the Muscle Band was tied firmly around his right leg, "Let's get goin'!" Pointing forward, Dawn said, "Cyrus, use Aerial Ace!"
"Crobat, use Poison Fang!" Koga ordered.
The two Pokémon flew at each other, Cyrus quickly striking at Crobat who bit him with poisoned teeth. Also, Dawn saw it when Cyrus cried out as a purplish blush appeared over his face. "Cyrus has been badly poisoned," Dawn commented.
"Poison is a great challenge to face off against," Koga remarked, "You are allowed to switch your Pokémon out if you feel-"
"Cyrus, use Facade!" Dawn called out, making Cyrus fly in and slam Crobat really hard, knocking it down out of the air and knocking it out.
Holding up a hand, Lance announced, "Crobat is unable to battle! The winner is Staraptor!"
Recalling his fainted Crobat, Koga said, "Of course! Facade! I need to be more careful of that move as it can turn my use of poison againt me!" Koga nodded once to Dawn. "Thank you for showing me the error of my ways, Champion Dawn."
Dawn nodded once to Koga in acknowledgement. "No one is flawless, not even me. The trick is basically to overcome flaws and learn from the past."
"Indeed," Koga agreed, "Now then, let us continue this dance. Ariados, I choose you!" Tossing up a pokéball, Koga called out his next Pokémon, an Ariados.
"Cyrus that's enough, fall back!" Dawn said as she swapped her Pokémon, "Alright, Germany! Let's get goin'!" After swapping her Pokémon out, Dawn now had her named Garchomp, who was wearing the Assault Vest held item, in the battle.
Upon seeing the named Garchomp, Lance's attention was piqued more. "Oh ho ho! So this is the dragon Pokémon Garchomp from Sinnoh!" Lance said, "I saw Cynthia's on TV a few times, but this is my first time seeing one in person!"
Gesturing forward, Koga said, "Ariados, use Spider Web!"
"Germany, use Rock Tomb!" Dawn ordered.
The two Pokémon fired their attacks at one another, with Germany summoning boulders down upon Ariados as it was willing up the Spider Web attack. Ariados was able to fire Spider Web, but it fell short of Germany because Rock Tomb not only hit Ariados but did so hard enough to knock Ariados out outright. From what Dawn saw, Germany's Rock Tomb scored a critical hit, and that's in addition to how it's super effective since it's rock hitting bug.
Holding up a hand, Lance announced, "Ariados is unable to battle! The winner is Garchomp!"
Koga recalled his fainted Ariados, gave Dawn a considering look. "Not bad. I wasn't even able to land an attack that time."
"It's part of why I make sure all of my Pokémon have move sets that are as varied as possible," Dawn replied.
Koga nodded once in understanding. Tossing up another pokéball, Koga went on, "Toxicroak, I choose you!"
"Germany that's enough, fall back!" Dawn said as she swapped her Pokémon out, "Alright, Leni! Let's get goin'!"
To the piqued interest of Koga, Dawn's next Pokémon turned out to be a Lucario, who was wearing a pair of the held item Wise Glasses. "...It's steel typing makes it immune to poison," Koga said, "But at the same time it makes it weak to fighting, which is why one of my Pokémon is a Toxicroak. I confess a curiosity as to why you're taking a gamble such as this." Pointing forward, Koga said, "Toxicroak, use Cross Chop!"
"Leni, use Psychic!" Dawn called out, making Koga go wide eyed with alarm.
Toxicroak tried rushing in with its hands in an x-shaped pattern in order to deal a likewise strike on Leni, but the named Lucario, her right paw hand aimed at Toxicroak, had her eyes glow with psychic power. Said power went on to blast right into Toxicroak, sending it reeling back until it slammed into the ground and skidded for a bit, kicking up a trail of dust. When said dust settled, everyone saw it that Toxicroak had been knocked out.
Holding up a hand, Lance said, "Toxicroak is unable to battle! The winner is Lucario!"
Koga aimed a pokéball at his fainted Toxicroak to recall it. "...You are indeed powerful," Koga said, "But I am still far from finished!" Tossing up another pokéball, Koga said, "Tentacruel, I choose you!"
Dawn wasn't sure what Koga was up to with Tentacruel, so to play it safe she kept Leni in. Pointing forward, Dawn said, "Leni, use Dark Pulse!"
"Tentacruel, use Bubblebeam!" Koga called out.
Both Pokémon aimed their attacks at their targets, but Leni was quicker to both aim and fire, letting her set off the Dark Pulse that struck Tentacruel right in the face, making it flinch and causing its Bubblebeam attack to flounder out. "Leni, use Psychic!" Dawn ordered. Once more, the named Lucario's eyes glowed with psychic power, which went on to slam into Tentacruel, sending it reeling back until it slammed down into the ground where it laid defeated.
Holding up a hand, Lance announced, "Tentacruel is unable to battle! The winner is Lucario!"
Koga, saying nothing, recalled his fainted Tentacruel. "Impressive display," Koga remarked, "Your title of Sinnoh champion has obviously been well earned and deserved. But I am not finished yet, I'm afraid!" Tossing up a fifth pokéball, Koga said, "Skuntank, I choose you!"
"Leni that's enough, fall back!" Dawn said as she swapped her Pokémon, "Alright, Germany! Let's get goin'!" After the swap, Dawn had her Garchomp take to the battlefield once again. Lance, given how he is basically the dragon guy of Kanto, was amused to see the dragon Garchomp once more being used in the battle. Gesturing forward, Dawn called out, "Germany, use Earthquake!"
"Skuntank, use Sucker Punch!" Koga commanded. Skuntank rushed in and struck Germany in the gut, just below the Assault Vest held item that he was wearing. But the only thing of consequence that was accomplished by that happening was putting Skuntank right in the ground zero area of the earthquake that was triggered by Germany. The ground shook violently, slamming Skuntank with seismic waves that threw it back until it skidded along on the ground. When it came to a stop, it was clear that Skuntank had been defeated.
Holding up a hand, Lance announced, "Skuntank is unable to battle! The winner is Garchomp!"
Koga recalled his fainted Skuntank, his expression unreadable. "...To think I'm both coming far and falling short at the same time," Koga said, "I've done some damage, but none of it has been enough to take any of your Pokémon thus far down."
"Well I do keep swapping my Pokémon out," Dawn pointed out.
Koga nodded in understanding. "I have one Pokémon left. It shall make my final stand with me!" Tossing up a pokéball, Koga said, "Venomoth, I choose you!"
"Germany that's enough, come back!" Dawn said as she swapped her Pokémon around, "Alright, Cyrus! Let's get goin'!' Coming back out into battle was Dawn's named Staraptor, who was still toxic poisoned. Pointing forward, Dawn said, "Cyrus, use Facade!"
"Venomoth, use Silver Wind!" Koga commanded. Venomoth conjured and blew a silvery wind at the oncoming Cyrus, who just blasted through it before slamming hard right into Venomoth. Cyrus's Facade, a normal type move meaning it both gets STAB and is boosted by the Muscle Band, not to mention how it doubles in power because Cyrus is toxic poisoned, struck Venomoth so hard it had slammed it into the ground, where it laid defeated.
Holding up a hand, Lance announced, "Venomoth is unable to battle! The winner is Staraptor!" Gesturing to Dawn, Lance declared, "Victory of this official gym battle goes to the challenger, Dawn!"
After Cyrus landed on the ground and coughed a bit, Dawn immediately went over and took out a Peacha Berry that she had Cryus eat. As the Pecha Berry worked its magic to cure the toxic poisoning that Cyrus had, Koga walked up to Dawn. "There's much you have shown me, Champion Dawn," Koga said, "I had assumed myself ready to move on up to the Indigo League's elite four, and yet my battle against you showed me that there were things I hadn't even considered."
Dawn stood up from having fed the Pecha Berry to her Staraptor. "Life is about rolling with the punches."
"Hmm," Koga hummed in agreement, before taking out a Soul Badge and offering it to Dawn. "As you had defeated me fairly in an official challenge to the Fuchsia City gym," Koga said, "This Soul Badge is now yours."
Accepting the Soul Badge from Koga, Dawn nodded once in acknowledgement. "Thank you." Everyone else watching cheered at the show of good sportsmanship between the two trainers who had just gotten done battling one another. All that did was make Kenny more excited for his battle against Janine, which was done after Koga, using medicines that he had made himself, treated the injuries of both his own Pokémon and Dawn's Pokémon.
Although just as great as the battle between Koga and Dawn, the battle between Janine and Kenny didn't last as long due to how each trainer was limited to five Pokémon each rather than a full six on six battle. Either way, Kenny ended up taking the win against Janine.
Cell took down Janine's Crobat and first Ariados, Spider-Frog (the appearance of a shiny Ariados surprised and amused both Janine and her dad) took out Janine's second Ariados, Hisoka took out Janine's Venomoth with a Zen Headbutt to the gut that was used as if Hisoka was fired from a cannon and flew right at Venomoth, and Elay didn't technically take Janine's Weezing out; Janine, knowing by that point she was going to go down anyway, ordered Weezing to use Explosion.
Kenny, forgetting that Weezing had Levitate as its ability, ordered Elay to use Dig in the hopes of doing some super effective ground damage to Weezing. Weezing used Explosion while Elay was safely underground, meaning Janine's last effort was rendered moot. Regardless, Kenny did win the battle, and thus Janine awarded him the Soul Badge for his efforts.
This put Dawn and Kenny at five Kanto gym badges each, leaving them both three away from getting all eight.
...
"I'd say that both of you pass," Lance said to Koga and Janine as everyone stood outside of the Fuchsia City gym, drawing elated looks out of the both of them. Nodding once, Lance went on, "Yes, although Koga can't immediately be an elite four in the Indigo League just yet, mostly because there's official paperwork to take care of, and that all will take a while to get through."
Koga nodded once in understanding. "Yes. Paperwork and the red tape coming with it is one of the few things more terrifying to deal with than poison."
"Oh you don't know the half of it," Lance said, a bit of an amused smirk on his face showing he agreed with Koga's assessment. Turning to Janine, Lance said, "While your dad's trapped getting through all of the necessary paperwork, you'll get plenty of time to flex your muscles as a newly certified gym leader in Kanto. I'll of course first have to have you fill out a few sheets of paperwork, then submit it to the Pokémon Inspection Agency. But everything will be in order soon."
Janine nodded once in understanding to Lance. "Thank you, Lance."
After nodding once to Janine, Lance turned to look at Dawn and Kenny. "So now," Lance went on, "Where do you two plan to head next on your gym challenge tour?"
"I'm thinking Saffron City," Dawn replied, "I heard that they have a gym there."
Lance nodded in agreement. "Yes. The gym leader in Saffron City, Sabrina, uses psychic type Pokémon. You ought to take that into consideration."
Dawn, as well as Kenny, already knew what to expect due to knowledge from their previous lives. But no-one knew that they already knew, so they had to play dumb. "Thanks for the tip, Lance," Dawn replied with a nod.
Dawn along with Kenny was about to take off, but they both stopped short when they heard a somewhat panicked male voice cry out, "Hey Lance! We got, like, huge trouble here!"
Immediately turning to face the direction that the voice came from, everyone saw an older, slender gentleman come running up. Dawn estimated him to be in the range of late fifties to early sixties in terms of age. "What seems to be the problem?" Lance asked.
The older gentleman had to catch his breath first before he could explain himself. "The board for the Pokémon League Admissions Exam had just been embroiled in a lawsuit! They face multiple charges ranging from corruption to minor emotional and mental abuse!"
Lance, although he looked shocked, didn't explode with sheer surprise unlike Dawn, Kenny, Koga, Janine, and even Aya. Rather, Lance had a grim expression, as if something he had been suspecting had just been confirmed. "...I see," Lance said. Turning to face the others, Lance said, "I don't suppose that you all would mind accompanying me in dealing with this? I get the feeling that I'll need some help here. Dawn and Kenny, I'll even arrange for you two to be given transport over to Saffron City afterwards."
"Sweetness!" Kenny cheered as he pumped his fists into the air, "More adventure!" Dawn rolled her eyes at Kenny as she nonetheless agreed to go along, as did Koga, Janine, and Aya. Together, the lot of them followed Lance and the older gentleman off to go see why the board for the Pokémon League Admissions Exam is in so much legal trouble now apparently.
END, CHAPTER SIXTY
Author's notes;
This chapter sees Dawn and Kenny earn their respective Soul Badges, putting them at five Kanto gym badges each. Both battles were fit in one after the other, using Koga for Dawn and Janine for Kenny; Koga's party uses a mix of Pokémon from various teams he's used in various games, and Janine uses her initial challenge party from HGSS.
Although Dawn and Kenny had plans to go to Saffron City next, they get sidetracked due to a scandal involving the board for the Pokémon League Admissions Exam (remember the episode of the original anime with that exam that was absurdly impossible for the MCs to pass? Yeah, that), so now they along with Koga, Janine, and Aya are going to help Lance deal with that during the next chapter. It'll surprise you in ways you weren't expecting.
Dawn's Pokémon: (on hand) Chi-Chi (female Infernape), Cyrus (male Staraptor), Germany (male Garchomp), Akiza (female Roserade), Leni (female Lucario), Tsukune (Palkia)
Kenny's Pokémon: (on hand) Cell (male Scizor; shiny), Spider-Frog (male Ariados; shiny), Elay (male Sandslash; shiny), Hisoka (male Mr. Mime), Goofy (male Houndoom), Black (Giratina)
