Chapter Sixty-seven: Squirrelly Wrath

"You want to catch a Pachirisu?"

Dawn nodded in the affirmative to Kenny when he asked her that question. Dawn also explained to Kenny that, when they get to Johto, she wanted to look into getting a Cyndaquil and an Aipom. With those two hints, it clicked for Kenny that Dawn was now aiming to get all the Pokémon that had been obtained by her anime counterpart from the anime in their previous lives. Kenny gave Dawn an understanding nod.

"Well I think they can be found in the wild by the Valley Windworks area," Kenny said, "So with that in mind, I think that we-"

"Oh, did you kids say that you were going to head to the Valley Windworks?" Johanna called out, coming out having heard what Kenny said about the trip to Valley Windworks, "Because I was going to be heading over there myself later today with Lila."

Dawn and Kenny were both surprised when Johanna mentioned that she was also planning a trip to Valley Windworks later, and Dawn was further interested when Johanna also said that Lila, who is Johanna's old contest rival, was also going to be there. "...I'm just curious, mom," Dawn began, "But what are you and miss Lila going to do?"

"An old mutual friend of ours has a husband who works at the Valley Windworks," Johanna explained, "We're expecting to meet said friend there while she's visiting her husband. We're aiming to recruit her into helping with our little planned project."

The project that Johanna mentioned. Dawn still wanted to know what it was, but she decided to put that matter on the back burner for now. "I don't suppose that Kenny and I can come along with you and miss Lila?" Dawn asked.

Johanna smiled. "Well it would be nice to have some time with you before you continue traveling other regions because Sinnoh still needs to advertise its newest champion to said regions." With the agreement made, Dawn and Kenny made preparations to go with Johanna and Lila over to the Valley Windworks, the ladies so they can talk business on their secret plans, and Dawn and Kenny so that Dawn can catch a Pachirisu.

After a decent car ride, Johanna's party arrived at the Valley Windworks, with Johanna and Lila getting out of the front doors while Dawn and Kenny got out of the back ones. "So we're looking for a lady named Luna, but prefers to go by her nickname of Cookie," Lila said to Dawn and Kenny, "She'll be visiting here to see her husband, and is also bringing her daughters Tabitha and Claire."

Dawn's attention was piqued by the names given for Cookie's daughters. She was about to ask Lila some questions, but got cut off when she heard a familiar female voice call out, "Oh my, Dawn! It's lovely to see you again!" Dawn and the others all turned to see Tabitha, one of Dawn's opponents from the Lily of the Valley Conference, come rushing at her as fast as she could waddle, given that Tabitha is a big girl.

Following along behind Tabitha were a woman who looked like Tabitha but older and somewhat thinner but still rather well fed, and a girl who looked to be the same age as Mitchell (Rhyanna's little brother); the younger girl was the only one approaching Dawn's group who wasn't visibly overweight, and in fact looked like she could stand to gain a few pounds. "It's a pleasure to meet you again," Tabitha said when she reached Dawn, "To think I had battled the girl who ended up winning against Cynthia and became the new Sinnoh champion!"

"Huh, I didn't know that one of Cookie's daughters knew my daughter," Johanna remarked.

"Mom, I battled against Tabitha here during the Lily of the Valley Conference," Dawn said as she gestured to Tabitha.

At that point, the plump woman and lean younger girl came up. "Johanna! Lila! About time the two of you got here!" said the woman, "I was beginning to think you two got lost!"

"Not a chance, Cookie," Lila replied. To Dawn and Kenny, Lila said, "Kids, this is me and Johanna's friend Luna, who prefers to go by her nickname Cookie. The young girl with Cookie is her youngest daughter Claire. And it's clear Dawn at least already knows Cookie's oldest daughter Tabitha."

Claire was clearly looking right at Dawn with admiration. "Wow, I can't believe that I'm getting to meet Champion Dawn in person!" Claire said, "This is super awesome! Why did you come here to the Valley Windworks? Is it anything I can help with?"

Gesturing to Dawn, Kenny explained, "My main man Dawn here is-"

"Champion Dawn is a girl," Claire pointed out, interrupting Kenny in the process, "Why are you calling her a man?"

"Kenny says the 'my main man' bit when referring to me as a gender neutral expression," Dawn explained, "Sort of like how some people use the word 'dude' when referring to someone regardless of if that someone's a boy or a girl."

Tabitha nodded in agreement. "She's right, Claire," Tabitha said to her little sister, "And you were being rather rude interrupting like that just now."

After Claire was made to apologize for interrupting him, Kenny said, "...Moving on, Dawn here had expressed to me that she had an interest in tracking down and catching a Pachirisu. I heard rumors that Pachirisu could occasionally be found in the wild near the Valley Windworks, so we decided we'd come here. As it happened, Dawn's mom Mrs. B here and Mrs. B's friend Lila were both on their way here to meet Mrs. Cookie, so Dawn and I hitched a ride with them."

Tabitha and Claire both lit up at Kenny mentioning that Dawn wanted to catch a Pachirisu. "Oh my, you certainly know how to make good choices," Tabitha said to Dawn, "Pachirisu as a species are downright adorable. Just like Kenny's Pikachu in the adorable libre wrestler outfit."

"Kenny fun fact," Kenny spoke up, "Mrs. B's friend Lila actually made Juan's costume, working with a general idea I drew up for it."

"So you're the one who made that outfit for Kenny's Pikachu!" Tabitha said to Lila, "I've been meaning to get into the world of designing Pokémon fashion more, so maybe if you're okay with it I could learn a thing or two from you."

Lila let out an amused laugh. "Well certainly! I have no problem working with the kids of my friends!" Everyone had a good laugh as they proceeded to move into the Windworks building to talk inside some more.

Inside of the Valley Windworks, the kids were in an office slash lounge slash break room area while Johanna, Lila, and Cookie were in a separate area, discussing their plans. "So you want to catch a Pachirisu, huh?" Claire asked, "Are you sure you can handle it? I mean, I heard that Pachirisu as a species can be energetic."

"Dawn here has total and complete command over all of her Pokémon," Kenny said, "Which includes a legendary Pokémon. I'm sure that the Pachirisu that she wants to catch will be easy for her to get under control without much hassle."

Tabitha nodded in agreement. "You mean that giant bipedal dragon she used against that Tobias fellow and then again against Cynthia? Yes, I'm confident that Dawn can easily make the Pachirisu that she wants to catch respect her authority as its trainer, given that Dawn has done the same with that beast of a dragon Pokémon."

Dawn nodded once to Tabitha. "Thanks for the vote of confidence." Looking around, Dawn soon saw a spread of bagels, with a variety of cream cheese spreads available for them. Pointing this out to the girls, Dawn asked, "You think it'd be alright if I got one?"

"There's no shame in helping yourself," Tabitha replied, "My father who got them for him and his co-workers here said there's plenty for everyone. I've even tried needling Claire here to help herself as much as she wants, given she clearly needs to gain some weight."

"And you clearly need to lose some weight," Claire shot right back in a dry tone, said tone being matched by her expression.

"Oh ha ha," Tabitha replied, clearly sarcastic in that laugh. Tabitha then moved over to the table with the bagels and cream cheese spreads and prepped herself one to eat.

"What did you get?" Kenny asked.

Before Tabitha can speak up, Claire said, "Knowing her, she got a jalapeno bagel with the spicy jalapeno cream cheese spread. She really likes spicy stuff."

Tabitha, looking mildly annoyed, said, "Claire's right. It's my favorite combination of-"

"Pachi-chi-chi!"

Everyone stopped short when they heard that random cry come in out of nowhere. Looking around, it was Claire who first spotted what made that noise; sitting on a window sill of a window in the room that was left open was a wild Pachirisu, who was looking directly at Tabitha. "Hey look, it's a Pachirisu!" Claire said, "Just like what Dawn wants to catch!"

"Yeah but I can't battle and catch it in here because that'll most likely make a mess of things," Dawn pointed out. Right then, the Pachirisu hopped down from the window sill, entering the room fully. It then proceeded to cutely approach Tabitha, being as endearing as possible.

"Aww," Tabitha said, gushing over how cute the Pachirisu was being, "Pachirisu here is being such a total swee-"

*HUUWUHBAM*

Tabitha was cut off when Pachirisu slammed into her with a full body strike, making her cry out while it grabbed her prepared bagel snack and ran to one corner of the room. While keeping its eyes on everyone, Pachirisu proceeded to eat the bagel it stole from Tabitha. "That little hoodlum not only attacked me, it also stole and is now eating my bagel!" Tabitha exclaimed.

Claire, letting out a chuckle, said with a smirk, "Heh, even a random wild Pachirisu agrees with me that you ought to lay off the bagels."

"Not now, Claire!" Tabitha scolded.

Seeing Pachirisu not only eat the bagel but clearly love it, Kenny said, "I'm surprised that Pachirisu is clearly enjoying eating that bagel. I mean, you girls said it's a jalapeno bagel with the spicy jalapeno cream cheese spread."

Dawn, suspecting something, said, "...I'm guessing that Pachirisu has either an adamant, a naughty, a brave, or a lonely nature, as Pokémon with those natures always love spicy foods." Seeing that Pachirisu had finished off the bagel it stole from Tabitha, Dawn went over to the table with the bagels and cream cheese spreads, prepped the same kind of bagel Tabitha had, cut it into halves, then approached Pachirisu.

Pachirisu saw Dawn approach with another bagel and proceeded to approach Dawn similar to how it had approached Tabitha. However, Pachirisu stopped short when Dawn knelt down and held out one of the bagel halves to it. "You don't have to attack me for this," Dawn said to the Pachirisu, "I'm offering it to you."

Cautiously, Pachirisu took the offered bagel half from Dawn, then immediately ran to the same corner of the room where it ran to the first time. Pachirisu, while still a little wary, relaxed a bit as it proceeded to eat the bagel half Dawn gave to it. When it was finished, Pachirisu looked to Dawn, who held out the other bagel half. "You still hungry?" Dawn asked the Pachirisu.

Pachirisu scampered forward a bit, but stopped short to let out a small burp. It shook its head as if trying to keep itself up, but the way it scampered the rest of the way to Dawn made it clear that it was getting full. Upon reaching where Dawn was still knelt down, Pachirisu stopped and looked up at her. Feeling tired, Pachirisu let out a yawn before it curled up near Dawn and proceeded to fall asleep at her feet.

Dawn handed the other bagel half to Tabitha while taking the opportunity to take out a pokéball, expand it, and use it on the Pachirisu. It went into the pokéball which landed on the floor with a very slight klink, before shaking for a bit until it made a ping sound, indicating capture. "Well there's the Pachirisu you wanted to catch, dude," Kenny said as Dawn got up while collecting the pokéball that now held her newly caught Pachirisu.

Dawn took her pokédex out to scan the pokéball Pachirisu was in. Pachirisu was male, had an adamant nature ("I had a hunch one of my guesses was right," Dawn said upon seeing Pachirisu's nature), and the Pickup ability. It also came knowing Covet and Bite, along with Spark. "Well that explains Pachirisu attacking Tabitha while simultaneously stealing her bagel," Dawn remarked, "He knows how to use Covet."

"Since you got him now, will you make him own up in some way to Tabitha for how he stole and ate her bagel?" Kenny asked.

"Maybe, but we ought to have some understanding here," Dawn said, "Chances are he came in due to smelling food, and wanted some due to having trouble finding some in the wild." Looking at Kenny, Dawn pointed out, "A similar thing occurred when we attended that Honey Tree event a while ago in Floaroma Town, and the shiny Scyther you would eventually catch crashed the party due to how he smelled the honey."

Claire let out a bit of a giggle. "He was actually being kind of cute. I wouldn't mind giving him a treat if he's still hungry."

"Probably not because he looked like he indicated that he was full before falling asleep and being caught by Dawn," Tabitha pointed out, "Also, given that Pachirisu is now Dawn's Pokémon, you ought to ask her for permission before trying to give him any treats."

"Your sister's right," Dawn said. Looking at the pokéball that held her new Pachirisu, Dawn went on, "Anyway, given that I caught Pachirisu here, I'm going to be naming him."

"What do you want to name him, my main man?" Kenny asked.

Looking at the pokéball that held Pachirisu, Dawn thought about it for a moment before she said, "I'll name him Foamy."

Claire giggled cutely a bit upon hearing the name Dawn chose for the Pachirisu. "That sounds like a really cute name! And it fits since Pachirisu is a really cute Pokémon!" Everyone then proceeded to share a laugh as they relaxed, while also celebrating Dawn having caught a new Pokémon to add to her rotation of available Pokémon.

Two more left to go for Dawn 'completing the set', as it were.

A short while later, Johanna, Lila, and Cookie met back up with the kids. It was there that they got it that Dawn had caught a Pachirisu that wandered into the Valley Windworks building via a window that was left open because he smelled food and was hungry. They even saw Foamy as he was out and laying in Dawn's lap as she was sitting, carefully combing his fur as he slept. "Now that is just adorable," Johanna remarked.

"He certainly wasn't adorable when he attacked me to steal my bagel before Dawn caught him," Tabitha said dryly.

Looking over to the ladies, Dawn asked Johanna, "Hey mom, I've been meaning to ask. What is this secret plan you're doing with miss Lila and Mrs. Cookie here?"

"Oh, well I suppose I ought to tell you," Johanna said, "Given that you and Kenny may come across it in your travels across various regions." To the kids, Johanna said, "The ladies here and I are working with a few others to introduce the concept of Pokémon contests to regions where the practice is non-existent. We're going to be first focusing on Unova, but other regions are on the table as well."

Hearing what the plan was got Dawn and Kenny's attention. "You're going to bring contests to all over the various regions?" Kenny asked.

"It'll be quite the undertaking," Cookie said, "Especially since one of the regions our group as its eyes on for this will probably be very resistant to the idea of contests due to vastly preferring battles. But I'm confident well get through to everyone everywhere!"

"Ooh! Pokémon contests in all regions!" Claire said, her interest very clearly piqued, "It sounds like it'll be a blast!"

Dawn, although she wasn't a big contest buff like her anime counterpart from her previous life, was still intrigued by the concept. "It does sound like it'll take a lot of work." Gesturing to the ladies, Dawn went on, "But with experts in the field like you leading the charge, I bet you'll be able to make all of it work out."

"Well we certainly hope we can make it work out," Lila remarked, "Given that the ladies and I will have to do quite a bit to get the okay from the governments of various regions before we can bring Pokémon contests to said region. We're starting with Unova because they have something similar to Pokémon contests, so we're hoping to use that to convince Unova's government to give us the okay to introduce Pokémon contests to Unova."

Kenny folded his arms over his chest. "If I recall correctly, me and Dawn's friend Ash should be in Unova right now, going through the Unova gym challenge." Looking to the ladies, Kenny added, "You may end up running into Ash while in Unova, trying to do your thing with Pokémon contests."

"Oh! That's right!" Johanna said, "I did hear from Professor Oak that he did bring Ash with him to Unova and dropped him off for the Unova gym challenge." Turning to look at Dawn and Kenny, Johanna went on, "You kids may end up running into him again. Being trainers who are friends with one another, anything can happen."

"Are you two going to Unova soon?" Claire asked, looking up at Dawn and Kenny.

Dawn gently shook her head. "Kenny and I do eventually plan to go to Unova to challenge the gyms there as part of our gym challenge tour. But after we're done here with some last minute details in Sinnoh, we're heading to Johto next."

"Then Hoenn after that," Kenny supplied.

"But after that point," Dawn finished up, "After we have Sinnoh, Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn under our belts, we'll be taking aim at Unova."

Tabitha, with a curious look on her face, asked, "Why not add Kalos to the list? It's regarded as one of the fashion capitals of the world. I myself would love to go to Kalos."

"As it just so happens, the ladies here and I are planning to head to Kalos eventually as part of our plan to bring Pokémon contests to all regions," Johanna remarked, "As it's got a fairly prominent contest scene already. We're hoping we can recruit the help of notable persons in the Kalos contest scene to help us out with our plan."

Shrugging, Dawn replied, "It's on the list that Kenny and I have, don't worry."

That evening, when the Twinleaf Town residents got back to Twinleaf Town, Dawn and Kenny were at the former's home in the living room. There, Dawn had Foamy out, who insisted on riding on Dawn's right shoulder, sort of like how Ash's Pikachu likes to ride on Ash's shoulder. "So tomorrow is when our adventure continues," Kenny said, "Where we'll be giving Johto the business as we earn the badges from its various gyms."

Dawn nodded in agreement. "Yeah. It'll give us a chance to see some of our newer Pokémon get in on the gym battle action." Foamy nodded excitedly as he sat on Dawn's shoulder.

Kenny was about to speak up, but stopped short when Johanna came out into the living room. "I almost have dinner ready," Johanna said, "Oh Kenny, you ought to stay for dinner, given that there's going to be a guest who'll want to see you and Dawn at the same time."

"A guest who wants to see both me and Kenny?" Dawn asked, sounding curious.

...

As it turned out, said dinner guest was Professor Rowan. "I understand it that you kids are set to go to the Johto region soon," Rowan began, "Is that correct?"

"Yes it is, sir," Dawn replied with a nod. Kenny himself just nodded.

"That being said," Rowan continued, "I will take the liberty of calling Professor Elm and let him know that you kids will be arriving. Luckily flights from Sinnoh to Johto will see you right to New Bark Town, where Professor Elm's lab is located."

Kenny, with a bit of an amused smirk, said, "So you'll call him ahead of time to let him know we're coming so he can roll out the red carpet, ehh?"

Rowan gave an unconfirming hum. "In a way, yes." Letting out a sigh, Rowan said, "There's something about Elm that I feel I ought to tell you kids."

That last remark, as well as the tone in which Rowan spoke it, caught the attention of Dawn and Kenny both. "...What is it, sir?"

"Some other Pokémon professors in other regions, myself included in that lot, are a bit jealous of Elm," Rowan admitted, "As well as unamused that he's keeping such marvelous opportunities to study Pokémon to himself."

"What do you mean?" Dawn asked.

Rowan let out a breath. "A while ago, Elm saw off a boy who started his Pokémon trainer career in Johto. Elm gave the boy a Chikorita before sending him off." Rowan let out another breath. "...This boy who was under Elm's guidance had caught a Scyther that he somehow was able to evolve into a Kleavor, a species of evolved Scyther thought to have died out during the very beginning of the period after the end of the Hisuian period."

"He evolved a Scyther into a Kleavor?" Dawn asked, sounding surprised.

Rowan nodded in the affirmative. "Indeed. This golden boy of Elm's had rediscovered the lost method of evolving Scyther into Kleavor, effectively bringing the Kleavor species back out of the grasp of extinction. Myself and Oak, as well as various other Pokémon professors in various other regions, have been more or less hounding Elm to send his golden boy our way so we could have a chance to study his Kleavor."

Dawn remembered hearing Professor Oak mention that Professor Elm had a 'golden boy', but did not know the full extent of what all laid there up until now. All she was able to figure was that it had something to do with Pokémon species (variants or entirely different ones altogether) that were found only during the Hisuian period, given how Oak was elated to have the chance to study both Argent and Priestess.

"Is... is there a reason why Elm didn't send his golden boy over with his Kleavor?" Kenny asked.

"None that Elm gave me or any other professor in any other region," Rowan replied, "Although at this point, I think enough of us had browbeat Elm to the point he'll spill. At the very least, he agreed to present you two with a wonderful surprise upon your arrival in New Bark Town, partly in the hopes to try to begin mending bridges with me at least."

"Examples of cuisine found in and exclusive to Johto, perhaps?" Kenny asked.

Dawn had a firm feeling it was something else entirely, and she had a fairly good idea on what it could wind up being. "We'll be sure to ask Elm about your concerns, Professor Rowan."

"Excellent!" Rowan said, raising his glass in a toast to Dawn and Kenny. The rest of dinner passed without further incident, other than Foamy who was never recalled hopping up into Dawn's lap just to sit there and be petted, although he had to nuzzle into Dawn's stomach in order to make what he wanted from Dawn clear. He ended up falling asleep in Dawn's lap when Dawn was about halfway through finishing her dinner.

Dawn was up early the following morning, already packed and ready to go to Johto. She checked her on hand Pokémon to see how they were; Chi-Chi, Amy, Leni, Tsukune, Shalltear, and Foamy were all well rested and ready to go. By the time Dawn was dressed and fully ready to go to the airport to head to Johto, there was a knock on her bedroom door. "Come in, mom!" Dawn called out to who she assumed was going to be Johanna.

Instead, Dawn saw that it was Kenny, himself just as ready as Dawn was to head off on further adventure. "Do I look like your mom to you, dude?" Kenny asked.

"Well I wasn't expecting you to be here so early," Dawn replied.

Within short order, Dawn and Kenny were dropped off at the airport, being seen off boarding the plane that would take them to New Bark Town, Johto, by a party consisting of Johanna, Rowan, Lila, Cookie, Tabitha, and Claire. "Good luck, you two!" Claire called out as she and the others saw Dawn and Kenny disappear out of sight when they fully entered the plane, "Have fun in Johto!"

Dawn, who had a window seat, was up more or less the whole time of the flight, looking out the window. Kenny who sat next to Dawn had fallen asleep, snoring away. As Dawn was still looking out of the window, the on board intercom said, "Attention passengers, we're now beginning our decent into Johto. We'll be landing at New Bark Town Inter regional Airport within a few moments."

Hearing that, Dawn turned to face Kenny and gently shook him until he awoke. "Who? Waa? Wuh?" Kenny said as he came to, "I'm awake! I'm awake!"

"You are now," Dawn said dryly, "Anyway, look lively." Looking back out of the window, Dawn said, "We just got to the Johto region."

Author's notes;

This chapter was kinda sorta filler, but important filler for Dawn's sub-quest to get all the Pokémon that her anime counterpart in her previous life had. At this point, only two Pokémon are left on that list for Dawn, and both can be obtained in Johto. Kenny will also see some new Pokémon from the Johto region joining his cringe posse as well.

However, Dawn and Kenny getting new Pokémon while in Johto isn't the main thing. They went to Johto to continue their gym challenge tour, but before they start earning Johto gym badges, they'll be seeing Professor Elm who, in addition to offering them a special something, will also end up having to cough up some details that Oak, Rowan, and other Pokémon professors in other regions have been practically nagging him for.

...Those answers will lead to something no one will expect.
