"The way you move is like a full-on rainstorm
And I'm a house of cards
You're the kind of reckless that should send me running, but I kinda know that I won't get far"
- Shit! I can't believe I've lost again. How come your so good at this?
- Practice.
Sam groaned as Abe shuffled the cards again.
- What do you have for me?
- Nothing. All my chips are gone.
- So, what are you going to bet, dear? Or are you skipping out?
Sam moved uncomfortably on the kitchen chair. They were playing for sometime and she was scared of what he would ask if he won now that the chips are gone.
- Never. I'll get all my chips back. - he just smiled
- Right. I want five minutes against half. - Abe put half of the chips in the middle.
Damn. When they started playing they were just betting small treats like candies and sweets. Until he asked for a kiss, and she lost the round. Then he asked for 1 minute of kissing and it almost killed her. She insisted they started using chips after that. But even so, how could she concentrate? Now all the chips were gone anyway.
- Chickening out already, love?
- No. Hit me.
Shit. I have to concentrate for real this time. One minute was already too much. What would happen in five?
- Ok. Two pairs. - she put her cards on the table. Really proud of herself.
Abe pressed his lips together and laid down his.
- A full house? Really? Are you kidding me? You are cheating!
- No, I'm not. You're just a bad player. And a sore loser.
- Okay. I'm out. I'm tired of losing.
He chuckled. Taking her hands and pulling her in.
- You're being bad to me. - she pouted.
- I could have asked for worse.
- I supposed. But I'm still mad.
- You look so cute when your mad.
- Puff, whatever. I set the timer.
"And you stood there in front of me, just
Close enough to touch
Close enough to hope you couldn't see what I was thinking of
Drop everything now"
The room was nothing like I imagined. I was expecting a creepy laboratory or a white madhouse chamber. But it was actually a really cozy library, with more books than I've ever seen in my life. No person on sight.
But what really caught my eyes was a big, no huge, fish tank on the right wall. You could keep a shark in an aquarium like this. But I couldn't see anything. The water was clean and clear, but there was no fish inside.
I walked closer. There were some stands near it. With some books opened in random pages. So weird. For some reason, the huge tank fascinated me. No one keeps such a huge fish bowl with no fish inside.
Raising my hand, I touched the glass trying to sense anything. And then...
Whatever I saw, scared the shit out of me. I jumped back, catching my foot on the stand and falling back on my ass. Damn. That hurt.
But all the pain in my back was numbed cause I looked up. The creature in the tank was nothing I've even seen before. He was beautiful. The blues and greens hues of its skin. It looked at me blankly.
I laughed. Not of him. But at the situation. Getting up, I rubbed my back side.
- Sorry for my clumsiness. You surprised me. - I said, arranging the stand and book I had knocked down. Even though the creature obviously couldn't understand me.
- Don't need to apologize.
I jumped back again. Staring at it. This time, I've avoided the stand.
- Can't you speak? Or am I listening to you inside my head?
- Both. I supposed.
I was wonderstruck. I got close and touched the glass with my hands. The flow of images that went through my head made me hurt, like when I put a very loud song in my earphones.
- What are you?
- I'm Abraham Sapien. Nice to meet you, Ms. Taylor.
- I didn't tell you my name.
- You didn't need t...
- I don't like to be read.
- I apologize.
- You're the psychic.
He didn't say anything. He just swam away completely disappearing from my view. Did I say something? Did I scared it away?
- Not at all, Ms. Taylor. I just wanted to meet you closer.
This time the voice came from right behind me. I've jumped out of my skin.
- Stop that.
- What do you mean?
- Scaring the shit out of me! And reading my thoughts.
- My apologies.
- Man, you're sneaky. - I said putting a hand on my chest as if it could slow my heart.
- I'm not reading you.
- Ahn?
- I'm not reading you. You're broadcasting your thoughts so loud, it is like you're screaming in my ear.
- No. I'm not.
- Yes, you are.
The professor entered the library laughing.
- I see you guys are already getting along.
When both of us didn't answer, he continued.
- I guess I should show you to your room and the rest of the compound. Let's go through here. There's someone else you have to meet.
He walked past me. Pushing a password to another door.
The Abraham Sapien creature beside me chuckled.
- Good luck with Red.
- I'm Samantha Taylor. By the way. Not that you didn't know already.
He looked right through me eye to eye. For some reason my knees got week.
- You can call me Abe.
- You can call me Sam.
"Meet me in the pouring rain
Kiss me on the sidewalk
Take away the pain
'Cause I see sparks fly, whenever you smile"
Samantha was lying on the couch comfortably with her head on his shoulder. Abe was running his fingers through her hair. They haven't spoken much after the poker game. There was a movie on, but neither of them were paying much of attention.
- Do you remember when we met?
His caress were so soothing she was almost falling asleep.
- Of course, I do. You scared the shit out of me.
He chuckled.
- The first thing you've thought when you saw me was that I was beautiful. - Abraham had never shared this with anyone.
- Well. You are. - she answered running her hand down his arm that was around her, hugging her to him. - I love the patterns on your skin.
She followed one of them with her finger making him shudder.
- You also didn't see me as an it from the start. I don't think anyone referred at me as a he before. Not at first. - he said.
- And you? What did you thought about me? - she looked up at him.
- Well. I felt an instant connection to you for the way you saw me.
She pouted.
- Didn't think I was beautiful? - she teased, pretending to be sad.
He laughed.
- You were 14 years old! Of course, I didn't look at you like that.
She puffed and turned in his arms hiding her face in his chest and giggling.
- What? - he asked amused.
- Well. It's just... I did look at you like that. - she blushed.
- What do you mean?
- Come on, Abraham. You know I had a huge crush on you.
- What? You're kidding. Right? - he sat up, pushing her away.
- How can you be a psychic and not know that?
- You don't like to be read!
She laughed and pushed him back down. Laying her head on his chest.
- I was always ogling you. And every time you touched me, my heart would speed up. I got so embarrassed. I used to follow you every where with my eyes. Can't believe you never noticed that.
He took a deep breath and laid back.
- I had no idea.
"I run my fingers through your hair
And watch the lights go wild
Just keep on keeping your eyes on me
It's just wrong enough to make it feel right
And lead me up the staircase
Won't you whisper soft and slow
I'm captivated by you, baby
Like a fireworks show"
