The motorcycles moved down the dirt path while Daryl, Caroline and Connor steered the motorcycles around some holes in the dirt path and Daryl led the way. Connor had seen a sign with the name of the laboratory they were looking for a few miles back and the sunlight shimmered off the leaves.

Caroline felt the frustration coming from her brother as the motorcycles headed down the dirt path then she noticed someone was running out of the tree line. She saw Daryl had noticed as he stopped the motorcycle and Connor stopped the motorcycle next to Daryl's motorcycle. Caroline stopped the motorcycle next to Connor's motorcycle and Murphy placed his chin on her right shoulder.

"Where did they come from?" Connor asked as he looked at the three boys standing in the middle of the dirt path.

The oldest boy was eleven or twelve years of age and he had light brown hair and blue eyes. He wore a denim jacket, a white t-shirt, jeans and leather boots. He held onto the right hand of the boy to his left and held a knife in his right hand. On his back was a quiver and a child's bow and he gave them a cold look.

The boy standing next to him was nine or ten years of age, had light brown hair and blue eyes and he looked like the older boy. He wore a denim jacket, a black t-shirt, jeans and leather boots. He gave them a scared look and held on tighter to the older boy's hand.

The youngest boy was six or seven years of age, had dark hair and blue eyes and he had leather cords with dead rabbits tied to them over his shoulders. He wore a denim jacket, a gray t-shirt, jeans and leather boots.

"Hey there," Caroline said in Spanish as she smiled. The boys just stared at them when the older boy placed the knife back in the holder on his belt, removed something from his pocket and tossed a canister to the ground. The canister exploded as thick smoke filled the air and Daryl, Caroline, Connor, Katherine and Murphy started coughing.

"Why th'hell did he do that?!" Connor asked as he coughed.

"Little shit!"

The smoke cleared and they saw the boys were gone. Sighing, Daryl steered the motorcycle down the dirt path while Connor and Caroline followed and Caroline felt the anger coming from her brother.

A short time later, the motorcycles came out of the tree line onto a paved road and a large glade spread out around them. Daryl steered the motorcycle down the paved road when he saw a red van heading across the grass and he made the motorcycle go faster. Connor and Caroline followed his motorcycle when the red van moved onto the paved road then the red van sped down the paved road. The red van went down a side road as Daryl saw the sign for the laboratory they were looking for and Daryl slowed the motorcycle down. The motorcycles came to a stop as Daryl got off of the motorcycle and he walked to the sign.

"Guess this is the place we're lookin' fer," Connor said as he walked to stand next to Daryl.

"Wonder why that van was headin' there," Daryl said.

"Maybe they work there," Caroline said, walking to her brother.

"Why would anyone still be working there?" Katherine asked while walking to Connor.

"They wouldn't," Murphy said, walking to Caroline.

"Which is why I think we should leave. For all we know, we're heading into an ambush."

"Do you think those boys told whoever was drivin' that van about us?" Connor asked.

"If they had, why didn't whoever was drivin' th'van take a shot at us or try and run us off th'road?" Murphy asked.

"Guess they didn't have any weapons with them."

"Which is dumb, seein' how th'world is now."

"Yeah."

Daryl looked at the sign when he walked to the motorcycle and he got on the motorcycle. Caroline watched him start the motorcycle then steered the motorcycle to the side road.

"Guess we're headin' into an ambush," Caroline said as she and Murphy headed for the motorcycle and she got on the motorcycle. She started the engine as Murphy got on the motorcycle and he slid his arms around her waist. "Watch the hands, MacManus."

Murphy snorted a laugh as she steered the motorcycle to the side road and went to catch up with her brother's motorcycle.

Connor looked at Katherine when she headed for the motorcycle and he went to follow her. He got on the motorcycle as he started the engine and Katherine got on the motorcycle. She slid her arms around his waist as he steered the motorcycle to the side road and the motorcycles headed down the side road.

France – unknown location

Hornsby was able to obtain a cart and horse with the money Nanette gave him while Nanette held the reins in her hands and Mercer sat next to her on the driver's seat. She had found them clothes to change into, but Mercer still looked intimidating. The cart moved down the road while the sunlight shimmered off the leaves and Carol wondered where they were going. Dog sat next to her left leg as the dog panted and she lightly ruffled the top of the dog's head.

"Where are we going?" Lance asked Nanette in French.

"I am taking you to see someone who might know where your friends are," Nanette said in French then she steered the horse down a side road.

Carol and Maggie noticed the sheep grazing on the grass while the cart went down the road and Maggie smiled from the snoring sound coming from a sleeping Negan.

"I never knew he snored," Maggie whispered.

"Look," Hershel said as the cart approached a white brick cottage. Black stone tiling was on the roof and metal spike stuck out from between the tiling and along the top of the stone chimneys. The windows were covered with iron bars and dark wood shutters were on either side of the windows.

The cart came to a stop as the front door opened and a tall man with a lean, but muscular build walked outside. He had black hair and dark brown eyes. He was wearing a black denim jacket, a white shirt, black suspenders, black pants and black work boots and he had a black felt hat on his head.

"Hello, Luc," Nanette said in French while she hopped down from the driver's seat and Luc walked to her.

"What are you doing here?" Luc asked in French and looked at Carol and the others. "Who are these people?"

"They are a search party."

"Who are they looking for?"

"They are looking for their friends."

Hornsby was able to catch pieces of what they were saying as Luc frowned and Carol tapped Hornsby's right shoulder.

"What's wrong?" Carol asked.

"She is telling him why we're here, but I don't think he's happy about it," Lance said while Luc walked to the cart and Carol looked at Judith.

"Judith, I need your photo," Carol said and Judith handed her the photograph. She watched Luc when he noticed Mercer then he looked back at Nanette.

"You brought soldiers here!?" Luc shouted in French while pointing to Mercer.

"I…," Nanette said in French, paused and lowered her head.

"Leave! Now!"

"Wait!" Lance said in French and Luc turned to glare at him.

"Please. We need your help to find our aunt and uncle," Judith said and Hornsby translated. Luc looked at her then at Hornsby as his eyes grew darker and he flexed his fingers into fists.

"Papa?" came from the house as the door opened and a little girl, age five, with dark brown eyes and black hair walked out of the house. She wore a white linen shirt, jeans, black leather boots and her hair was in pigtails.

"Get back in the house, Marie," Luc said in French. Marie walked to her father when she saw Dog and she smiled.

"They have a doggie!"

"Marie…."

"Why are they here?"

"We're looking for our friends," Lance said in French and Carol handed him the photograph. "Here. Take a look."

Before Luc could stop her, Marie walked to the cart and Hornsby reached down to hand her the photograph. She looked at Caroline, Daryl, Judith and RJ when she looked at Judith and RJ and she smiled.

"That's you!" Marie said in French as she pointed to Judith and RJ then the photograph and Hornsby told them what she said.

"Yes," Judith said with a nod of her head.

"You know Mister Daryl and Miss Caroline?"

"Did she just say Daryl and Caroline's names?" Carol whispered to Hornsby and he nodded.

"Enough!" Luc said in French as he took the photograph from his daughter and handed the photograph to Hornsby. "Go!"

"What's with all the screaming?" Negan grumbled as he woke up and he noticed their surroundings. "Where are we?"

"Nanette brought us to see someone who might know where Daryl and Caroline are. Looks like he and his little girl know Daryl and Caroline, but Mercer scared him and now he wants us to leave," Maggie explained and Negan rubbed his face with his hands.

"Damn. Knew bringing the big guy would cause trouble."

Negan stood as he walked to Hornsby then Negan looked at Luc.

"Hey!" Negan said and Luc looked at him. "Look. I don't blame you for wanting us to leave. You don't know us from a hole in the ground. And the big guy here….? Hell… I'd be scared if I saw him for the first time. Nah. I wouldn't. Anyway… Ay point is we're not going to hurt you or the people we're looking for."

Hornsby translated what Negan said and Luc placed his hands on his hips. They waited for him to say something when he turned and looked at the cottage.

"Follow me," Luc said in French and they helped each other off the cart. They walked to the cottage then Luc opened the large metal door and Carol noticed the chickens sitting on what looked like a sectioned off bookcase, a cow behind a stall door and a sheep behind a smaller stall door after they walked inside. Luc led them into the main part of the house after he had pushed the button near the large metal door, iron bars moved in front of the large metal door, and he closed the door.

The main room of the cottage was split into two areas. The kitchen area was to the left and consisted of a stone fireplace for cooking, a working refrigerator, a sink with a working pump, several cabinets on the walls, a kitchen island, a pantry and a room where the generator was located. The pots and pans were connected to iron hooks embedded in the walls and a chandelier was connected to the roof by an iron chain.

The living area to the right consisted of the dining area with a wooden table covered with a white linen table cloth, a blue ceramic bowl sat at the center of the table and four wooden stools sat around the table. Iron candlesticks sat on either side of the blue ceramic bowl and a red carpet was under the table and the stools.

There were two wooden bookcases with books and comic books against the wall, a child's desk near the bookcases, a blue carpet was at the center of the room and a couch and two recliners with a dark wood coffee table sat in front of the stone fireplace. Two windows were on the front wall and iron bars were in front of the windows. A chandelier was connected to the ceiling by iron chains and wooden beams crossed the ceiling.

"Nice," Carol said and Maggie nodded.

Luc stood in the middle of the room while he glared at them and crossed his arms over his chest.

"Do you know them?" Judith asked as she took the photograph from Hornsby and she walked to Luc. Luc saw the sadness and worry in her eyes as she held up the photograph and he took the photograph from her. He saw the joy, love and happiness on Daryl, Caroline, Judith and RJ's faces as he sighed and lowered his head.

"Are they really your uncle and aunt?" Luc asked in French and Hornsby translated.

"Yes," Judith said with a nod.

Marie had seen the anger on her father's face as she walked to Carol and Hornsby and she glared at them.

"If you really know Miss Caroline… What happened to her hand?" Marie asked in French as she held up her right hand and Hornsby told Carol what she asked.

"A very bad lady smashed her hand with a hammer," Carol explained and Hornsby translated.

"Why did she do that?" Marie asked in French and Hornsby translated.

"Because she wanted to punish Miss Caroline for drawing something on the back of her hand," Carol said and Hornsby translated.

Marie thought for a few seconds then she tilted her head to one side as she looked at Carol.

"What does Mister Daryl have here?" Marie asked in French and pointed to her right forearm and Hornsby told Carol what she asked. Carol thought for a few seconds then smiled.

"It's a drawing of a running rabbit," Carol said and Hornsby told Marie what she said. Marie's eyes widened and she smiled.

"Papa! This lady knows about the drawing of the rabbit on Mister Daryl's arm!" Marie said in French.

"And how does she know about that?" Luc asked in French while glaring at Carol.

"She's his woman," Lance said in French and Luc' eyes widened.

"What did you tell him?" Carol whispered to Hornsby.

"That you're Daryl's woman," he whispered to her.

Luc walked to Carol as she wondered what he was going to do and he locked eyes with her. Luc pointed to the area where he kept his animals as she followed him and he glanced at the others.

"Are you really his woman?" Luc whispered in English.

"You speak English?" Carol whispered.

"Yes. Now answer my question."

"Yes. I am his woman."

"They were here."

"Do you know where they went?"

"No. I don't know."

"I see.

"I need to know," he whispered then looked at Hornsby, Negan and Mercer. "Do you really trust those men?"

"I trust two of them," she whispered, looking at Negan and Mercer.

Nodding, he led Carol back to the others and he placed the palms of his hands on top of the table.

"The people you are looking for are no longer here," Luc said in French.

"Where did they go?" Lance asked in French.

Luc didn't answer as he pushed off the table, walked to the door and opened the door. Carol nodded her head toward the door as they went to leave and Nanette saw the anger in Luc' eyes. He slammed the door in her face after she left and Nanette headed for the cart. She climbed up onto the driver's seat when she noticed Carol was sitting next to her and Nanette frowned.

"Judith told me you can speak English," Carol whispered.

"I can," Nanette whispered in English.

"Then I should warn you. Mess with us again and you'll have to deal with Mercer," Carol said and Nanette looked back at Mercer.

"I understand," she said then moved the reins to make the horses move down the road. They rode in silence for a while then she glanced the Carol. "If your friends were heading in this direction then their obvious destination would be the Palace of Versailles."

"Will it take long to get there?" Carol asked.

"Not long."

Carol watched the scenery going by as Nanette had a silent conversation with herself and she prayed for forgiveness for what she was planning.

Barcelona, Spain

The wind moved through his hair while Daryl made the motorcycle go faster and he flexed his fingers. He kept his eyes on the paved road while Caroline's motorcycle came to ride beside his motorcycle and she glanced at him. She reached out her left fist as he reached out to tap knuckles with her and she barely smiled. The motorcycles stopped in front of a cement wall with two guard towers on either side of the iron gate and the men in the guard towers pointed their rifles at them.

"Great," Daryl grumbled.

"Uh… Hello," Connor said in Spanish while holding his hands up in surrender after he stopped the motorcycle.

"This is private property! Leave!" the man in the left guard tower said in Spanish.

"We're here to see whoever's in charge. Doctor Anton Du Monte sent us," Caroline said in Spanish while holding her hands up in surrender after she stopped the motorcycle. The men looked at each other when the man in the right tower removed the walkie-talkie from his belt and said something in Spanish.

"What do we do if they don't let us in?" Connor asked.

"If they don't kill us then we leave," Daryl said.

"Which means this was a wasted trip," Caroline said.

"You might be right," Murphy said, placing his chin on her left shoulder.

"We better hope they don't want to see the proof that Du Monte sent us here," Katherine said

.

"Got that covered," Connor said and she wondered what he was talking about.

Daryl saw the man place the walkie-talkie back on his belt and the iron gate opened a few minutes later. Daryl started the motorcycle as the motorcycle headed for the iron gate and Connor and Caroline followed his motorcycle after they started their motorcycles. The motorcycles moved by the iron gate and down the paved drive and the iron gates closed behind them.

"Check that out," Caroline said after seeing what looked like a golfcart heading toward them and they stopped the motorcycles. The golfcart came to a stop when a tall woman with long dark hair and dark eyes got out of the golfcart and she placed her hands on her hips. She was wearing a gray tank top, jeans, work boots and her hair was pulled back in a ponytail.

"Who are you?" the woman asked in Spanish.

"Uh… Do you speak English?" Caroline asked in Spanish.

"Yes."

"I'm Caroline. Daryl, Katherine, Connor and Murphy."

"You said Doctor Anton Du Monte sent you."

"Yes. He did."

"Do you have any proof?"

"Yes. We do. But I don't wanna get shot showin' it t'you," Connor said.

The woman noticed the men in the guard towers were pointing their rifles at them when she shook her head and the men lowered the rifles. She watched Connor as he reached into the inner pocket of his black Navy pea coat and he removed the envelope.

"Here," Connor said as she walked closer and he handed her the envelope. She opened the envelope as she quickly read Anton's letter and her face went through a variety of emotions.

"Hmph," the woman said then she placed the letter in the envelope. She handed the envelope to Connor when she walked to the golfcart, turned and arched an eyebrow. "Come on."

Daryl shrugged his shoulders as they started the motorcycles and the woman got in the golfcart. She started the engine as the golfcart headed down the paved driveway and they followed the golfcart.

The golfcart came to a stop near the stairs leading up to a white, five story cement building with barred windows and tall bushes were in planters on either side of the sliding doors. Smaller bushes lined the front of the building and a few trees lined either side of the paved drive. The name of the laboratory was painted in black letters on the sliding doors glass and the sign to the right of the end of the paved road.

The woman got out of the golfcart. She watched Daryl, Connor, Katherine, Caroline and Murphy get off of the motorcycles and Caroline and Daryl placed the crossbows on their backs after removing the crossbows from the back of the motorcycles. Katherine slid the strap of the rifle over her right shoulder and Connor and Murphy adjusted the black Navy pea coats.

"This way," the woman said as she pointed to the sliding doors. Daryl looked at Connor, Murphy, Caroline and Katherine as they nodded their heads and they followed the woman to the sliding doors. The sliding doors opened while they walked into the lobby and they looked at the large, steel statue of a DNA strand standing at the center of the room.

"Hunh," Daryl said as he tilted his head to one side and Caroline went to stand next to him.

"What's wrong?" Caroline asked.

"Nothin'. Just never saw anythin' like that before."

"It's a statue of a DNA strand," the woman said as she came to stand next to them. "Want me to tell you about it?"

Katherine got a feeling there was something off with the woman as Katherine walked to them and she placed her hands on her hips.

"Who are you?" Katherine asked the woman.

"Name's Claudia," Claudia said.

"Do you work here?"

"I'm more or less the head of security."

"More or less?"

"Yeah," she said then she looked at Daryl and Caroline. "Before the world fell? I used to be the curator of the Mueso Militar."

"And because of that, they made you head of security?"

"Look. It wasn't my idea. Most of these guys….? They didn't know shit about fighting or weapons. Guess working at the Mueso made me an expert."

Claudia sighed as she shook her head and crossed her arms under her breasts.

"Some expert. When my aide at the Mueso got bit and turned into one of those things? I panicked, put on a suit or armor and ran."

"You put on a suit of armor?!" Connor asked with a wide-eyed look.

"That's one way not to get bit," Murphy said with a smile.

"Guys!" Caroline warned and Murphy slid his arms around her, pulling her close.

"You two are a couple, right?" Claude asked with a small laugh while she looked at Murphy and Caroline.

"Yeah."

Claudia smiled when the walkie-talkie on her belt buzzed and she removed the walkie-talkie from her belt.

"Claudia," she said as she pushed the button then released the button.

"Chief. This is Alexandro. The van's back," the voice said over the walkie-talkie.

"I didn't authorize anyone to use one of the vans."

"Yeah. Got that. Guess they took it."

"Shit,' she whispered and shook her head then pushed the button. "Are they still in the van?"

"No. The van's empty."

"Which means they could be anywhere. Ok. Clean the van and get it refueled."

"Check."

Sighing, Claudia placed the walkie-talkie back on her belt and rolled her eyes.

"Kids," she whispered and Daryl titled his head to one side.

"Did you say kids?" Daryl asked.

"It's nothing. Just three brats who think they run the place."

"Are you talkin' about three boys? Two of 'em have light brown hair and one of 'em has dark hair?"

"Sounds like you've seen them."

"Saw 'em on th'road on our way here," Murphy said.

"They used a smoke bomb on us to get away," Caroline said and Claudia sighed, rolling her eyes.

"They broke into the armory again," Claudia whispered.

"Hang on," Daryl said as he remembered the red van. "We also saw a red van headin' across the grass, too. Are you sayin' those three kids were drivin' it?"

"The older kid drives. The other two push the pedals," Claudia said.

"And you let them!?" Katherine asked with an angry tone to her voice.

"Like I said. They do whatever the hell they want," Claudia said, tossing her hands in the air. "Want to come and help me look for them?"

"Yeah," Daryl said with a nod of his head. Pointing toward the hallway with her hands, Claudia started to walk away and they went to follow her.
