Chapter Ninety-two: Walk through Petalburg Woods

Waking up in their campsite on Route 104 early in the morning, Dawn and Kenny packed everything up, straightened themselves out, then got back on the road to head on over to Rustboro City. This would see them through Petalburg Woods and the upper half of Route 104 first. The only thing that the two of them saw distracting them from just going to Rustboro City straight away was how Dawn wanted to take time to find and catch a Cascoon in Petalburg Woods. But other than that they didn't have anything slowing them down.

Soon enough, the two reborn trainers entered Petalburg Woods. "So we just go straight through here in order to reach the upper half of Route 104," Kenny said as he and Dawn traversed through the Woods, "Then it'll basically be straight on to Rustboro City?"

Dawn nodded in the affirmative. She was also looking around at her and Kenny's surroundings, as she wanted to find a Cascoon. She had no idea why, but she always kind of liked Dustox. She remembered getting one during her play through of Ruby back in her previous life, Ruby was the first gen three game she played after collecting what all gen four had to offer her before HGSS came out, and despite how it was far from the best Pokémon available stat wise, Dawn actually had used that Dustox for a fair bit.

As such, and because it also reminded her of Mothim and Venomoth, Dawn wanted to get a Dustox. And she was going to catch a wild Cascoon in order to guarantee it, given how Wurmple can evolve into either Cascoon OR Silcoon. So now she was keeping a sharp eye out for a Cascoon, looking for an oval shaped cocoon that had large red eyes and was slightly off purple. "Hey Kenny, if you see a Cascoon before me, let me know," Dawn spoke up.

Kenny nodded in understanding. "Don't you worry, my main man, we can put off heading to Rustboro City until we find a wild Cascoon for you to-"

"Ahh! Leave me alone!"

Dawn and Kenny stopped short in their conversation when they heard that man's voice cry out. Looking over, they saw a man who clearly was dressed in a business suit running away from some manner of threat. Instinct kicked in for Dawn and Kenny, and soon enough, after they jogged closer to see what was going on, they spotted a pair of Team Scorn grunts chasing after the man.

"Hey, get back here, you Devon Corporation fancy man!" the first Team Scorn grunt snarled, "You got something rather important in that briefcase of yours that Captain Ayumu wants us to grab and get to him right away! Slow down so we can catch up to you!"

"Our first encounter with Team Scorn here in Hoenn," Kenny whispered to Dawn as he urged her to follow him, not that she needed the nudging.

The identified Devon Corporation employee saw Dawn and Kenny run over and, instinct telling him that these kids will help him out, immediately ran to hide behind them. "You kids are Pokémon trainers, right?" the Devon Corporation employee asked, "Then you gotta save me here. These thugs are part of the same group who carried out that horrible terrorist attack over in Blackthorn City over in the Johto region!"

"Hey brats, out of our way!" the second Team Scorn grunt barked, "That man has info that Captain Ayumu said that we have to get a hold of!"

Dawn and Kenny both cracked their necks a bit. "...Yeah, that's not going to happen," Dawn said, "Alright, Leni! Let's get goin'!" Dawn then immediately sent out her Lucario.

"Okay, Zarbon!" Kenny said as he sent his Machamp out, "Let's make it cringe!"

Seeing that Dawn and Kenny immediately decided to fight back, the two Team Scorn grunts decided to fight back as well, seeing each of them send out a Pokémon. Unfortunately for them, both of the Pokémon that they sent out were Poochyenas. The ensuing battle was brief, with Leni and Zarbon each knocking out one Poochyena before the battle was over. The two Team Scorn grunts, seeing how out matched they were, recalled their Poochyenas and slowly backed away.

"...Feh," the first grunt said, "This is bad. We're out gunned here, so we're gonna have to leave empty handed."

"Now we'll have to report to Captain Ayumu that we failed," the second grunt added.

Dawn stepped forward, giving off a demanding aura. "Just what is it that your Captain Ayumu told you to do with this man? What does he have that's so valuable that the two of you were both told to chase him down and rob him?"

"Business that's between him and Captain Ayumu, you brats," the second grunt snarled, right before he and his fellow both turned around and ran away.

After the two Team Scorn grunts had both fled, the Devon Corporation employee turned around to face Dawn and Kenny after they recalled their respective Pokémon. "Thank you kids for saving me from those terrible thugs!" the employee said, "I was just walking through the Woods here when all of a sudden those thugs yelled out at me and began chasing me!"

The reborn trainers nodded in understanding. "It's fine, sir," Kenny said, "I think that for safety reasons, you ought to-"

"GAAAHHH!" the employee cried out in alarm, jumping back because something hit against the briefcase he was carrying. Dawn and Kenny both turned to look, and to everyone's relief as well as to Dawn's delight, it was just a wild Cascoon. "Oh great!" the employee screamed, "Now this random wild Cascoon wants to rob me as well!"

Seeing the wild Cascoon hop up and down, Dawn noticed an expectant look in its eyes. "...I have a theory," Dawn said as she knelt down, getting the Cascoon's attention. Dawn then began to slowly reach out to the Cascoon, who saw Dawn's hand coming. It met Dawn halfway by jumping up against the palm of Dawn's offered hand. Dawn smiled gently. "It just wants some attention is all," remarked the reborn trainer, "I don't think it wants to rob anyone, only cuddle against someone."

As the employee breathed a sigh of relief, Dawn proceeded to take the opportunity to catch the Cascoon, using a Net Ball to do so. The Net Ball, after taking Cascoon into itself, fell to the ground softly before it shook for a bit before making a ping sound, indicating capture. Dawn then picked up the ball that held Cascoon and scanned it with her pokédex. "Huh, a male Cascoon," Dawn remarked before saying, "I'll name him Jessie."

"Isn't Jessie a girl's name?" Kenny asked, "And the name of that red haired harlot from Team Rocket?"

"Jessie is actually a unisex name," Dawn said, "I even knew a few guys named Jessie." In her previous life, but Dawn wasn't going to say that part out loud. Turning to look at the employee, Dawn said, "I don't suppose that you can help us get to Rustboro City, could you? My friend here and I are going through Hoenn to challenge the gyms and earn badges, and we got it that there's a gym located over in Rustboro City."

The employee nodded in confirmation. "Oh yeah, I can lead you straight to Rustboro City. I work in the Devon Corporation, which is located in Rustboro City." Looking concerned, the employee went on, "The president got it that Devon Corporation might be targeted by those heinous Team Scorn guys who made the news with their attack on Blackthorn City in the Johto region."

Dawn nodded in understanding. "I know. My friend here and I had met with Steven Stone, the son of the Devon Corporation's president, to discuss how to tackle the problem of Team Scorn's presence here in the Hoenn region."

Gesturing for the reborn trainers to follow him, the employee said, "Well, Mr. President will want to meet with you kids then. Come along now." Dawn and Kenny then proceeded to follow the employee out of Petalburg Woods, and onto the upper half of Route 104.

"...No way," the employee said as he talked with Dawn and Kenny upon walking into Rustboro City by mid afternoon, "You're actually Sinnoh champion Dawn Berlitz? Well that helps to explain how you got to have a meeting with Mr. President's son right off the bat upon arriving in Hoenn!"

As Dawn gave a single nod in response, Kenny said to the employee, "Say chief, why were those grunts chasing after you? Are you part of some big important project over at the Devon Corporation or something?"

The employee gently shook his head in the negative. "No, I'm not part of anything like that. I'm just part of the team that can revive Pokémon from fossils."

"Revive Pokémon from fossils, you say," Dawn said. She remembered from the Hoenn games in her previous life that Devon Corporation was where you go to get the fossil you chose revived. But that was what confused Dawn here; the Devon Corporation employee being attacked in Petalburg Woods by a member of the bad guy team was very similar to how things went down in the Hoenn games in her previous life, but there was a variant here.

The employee from the games was being harassed for the Devon Parts slash Devon Goods (depending on if it was gen three or the gen three remakes in gen six), but the employee here not only lacks anything along those lines from the get go, he's part of a (probably) different group that works at Devon Corporation. Dawn then asked the employee if he had anything that Team Scorn might consider worth stealing.

"Just notes on the fossil revival machine we have over at work," the employee said, "Oh, I also have a flashdrive containing info on the date we're expecting to transport two Pokémon fossils that were found somewhere in Route 111."

That sounded like something that Team Scorn might be interested in. "Can you tell us more about those fossils?"

"I'd rather wait until we're in the safety of Devon Corporation," the employee replied, "We'll have to bring this up with Mr. President."

Dawn nodded in understanding. "Fair enough, sir." The group then proceeded to continue their walk over to Devon Corporation, where Dawn will, among other things, ask about those fossils that had caught her attention.

...

A short while later, Dawn and Kenny stood in the office of Steven's dad at Devon Corporation. Steven's dad, the President of the Devon Corporation, bowed his head to Dawn and Kenny. "I would first like to thank you for saving one of my employees from being harassed by a pair of criminals," said Steven's dad, "And you are already working with my son to confront the group said criminals belong to. I daresay that Hoenn either will be owing you kids a debt of gratitude, or already owes it."

"There is something your employee told us on the way here to Devon Corporation," Dawn said, "After we had entered Rustboro City. He mentioned that he's part of the team that revives Pokémon from fossils, and that he was carrying papers and a flashdrive related to said position."

Mr. Stone let out a sigh. "You believe that Team Scorn might be targeting my company because of our Pokémon fossil revival technology?"

"Sir, I told her about some of the data on the flashdrive," the employee confessed, "About how we're scheduled to receive those fossils found somewhere in Route 111. I didn't give her any info outside of that, but I get the feeling she seems to think that those fossils might be part of why those Team Scorn criminals were after me."

Mr. Stone nodded in agreement. "Yes, that would make sense." Looking to Dawn and Kenny, the President began, "You see ki-"

"Father!" Steven's voice called out, unintentionally cutting his dad off, and making everyone in the office turn to see Steven himself run in. "I heard that one of your employees was atta-" Steven stopped short upon seeing that Dawn and Kenny were in the room. "Dawn? Kenny?" Steven began in a surprised tone, "What are you guys doing here?"

"They're the heroes who had foiled the attack on my employee by two Team Scorn grunts," Steven's dad explained.

"The girl also saved me from an aggressive Cascoon she ended up catching," the employee added, "But it turned out it was a literal cuddle bug who only wanted affection."

Steven wore a relaxed look of relief. "Well now, you guys have already stopped the first officially known act of Team Scorn here in Hoenn, it would seem," Steven remarked. A hint of concern then entered the expression of Hoenn's League Champion. "Why were Team Scorn grunts after one of my father's employees, though?"

"We were literally about to get into that before you came barging in, my boy," Mr. Stone said, "Oh, could you please close the door and lock it? I'm about to discuss info that ought to be kept secret. I'm also going to activate the soundproofing system and anti-spy tech system so as to make sure no spying eyes or ears will see or hear anything."

Steven nodded in understanding before turning around, going over to the door to close and lock it, then walking back over to be part of the conversation. Mr. Stone let out a tired sigh before he looked at his son, the employee, and the reborn trainers. He pressed two buttons on a console on his desk, then looked back to everyone. "Yes, it makes sense that Team Scorn would be after the Pokémon fossils that were found over on Route 111."

"Those fossils?" Steven said, "That's why Team Scorn was after your man here, father?"

"The man here said that he had notes on the fossil revival machine that's here at Devon Corporation," Kenny spoke up, "Along with a flashdrive containing info on when the company here is expected to get those fossils."

Gesturing to Dawn and Kenny, Mr. Stone explained, "We plan to revive those fossils into Pokémon, using the fossil revival machine here. We were then planning to gift the Pokémon revived from the fossils to notable persons from foreign regions, in a bid to establish good will between Hoenn and those regions. Said good will establishing is especially important due to our need to band together to fight off the threat that is Team Scorn."

Steven shot Dawn a wry look of mild amusement. "An argument could be made for you, Dawn, to be one of said persons to receive one of those Pokémon that will be revived from the fossils. They're a Root Fossil and a Claw Fossil, which will be revived into Lileep and Anorith respectively."

"Ah yes," Mr. Stone agreed, "She's done a lot of work in Johto to fight off Team Scorn, and she's also Sinnoh's champion. Gifting to her one of the Pokémon who will be revived from the fossils makes sense."

"I'll keep that in mind," Dawn replied, "But that's besides the point. If Team Scorn has any reasonable idea where those fossils are being kept now, they're bound to try to go after them. You ought to arrange for extra security for the fossils, but don't make it obvious or else it'll clue Team Scorn in on where the fossils are being kept."

Mr. Stone nodded in understanding. "They're being kept safe in an undisclosed warehouse located in Lavaridge Town. The local gym leader in Lavaridge Town, Flannery, is also part of the security for the fossils."

"Then that's another reason why Dawn and I will wanna see Flannery," Kenny said, "She's the gym leader, meaning Dawn and I are gonna wanna challenge her at her gym as part of our gym challenge tour here in Hoenn."

"And I have no doubt you'll want to see Roxanne, the gym leader of the gym here in Rustboro City, in due time," Mr. Stone added with a mildly amused smile, "Although you may be asked to help her make the students feel more at ease."

Kenny looked curious, but Dawn said, "There's a Pokémon trainer school located here in Rustboro City, isn't there?"

Mr. Stone nodded in the affirmative. "Nowhere near as lofty as Blackthorn City Academy, but they do still produce results. Roxanne teaches over at the school from time to time, but with the news of the terrorist attack in Blackthorn City, particularly how it was focused on the Academy located over there, the students are a bit worried."

Dawn nodded in understanding. "Don't worry, Kenny and I will put their minds at ease as best we can, assuming Roxanne won't mind us intruding."

"I'll talk things over with her," Steven said, "But I'm certain she'll agree to have two heroes who took part in fighting off the Team Scorn terrorist attack on Blackthorn City talk with the students." Dawn and Kenny were then given the address of the trainer school located in Rustboro City, and Steven told them to meet at the school between eight and nine tomorrow morning.

Dawn and Kenny were then dismissed, with Steven saying he wanted to ask his father what will be done to increase security to protect from Team Scorn, as well as discuss how to subtly increase security for the Root and Claw Fossils being kept in Lavaridge Town. Kenny agreed to leave, saying he wanted to talk to Dawn about something while checking out Route 116. Dawn was curious as to what was on Kenny's mind, so she agreed, thus leaving Devon Corporation with Kenny.

It was late afternoon when Dawn and Kenny set up a campsite on Route 116. While the fire to cook dinner was going and their on hand Pokémon resting off to the side, Kenny sat at the table with Dawn, gave her a serious look. "...What's going on now, Kenny?" Dawn asked, "Did I do somethi-"

"Can I get the offered fossil Pokémon instead?"

Dawn stopped short when Kenny spoke up, and was a bit surprised by what he was asking. "I don't have a fossil Pokémon yet," Kenny explained, "And I kind of want one." Dawn saw the hint of pleading in her friend's expression, heard the hint of pleading in his tone.

Dawn gave a relaxed smile. "...I wasn't too sure if I wanted to accept one of the offered fossil Pokémon anyway," Dawn said, "I mean, I already have my Rampardos Souji." Smiling gently, Dawn said, "If you really want it, I'll let you claim the offered fossil Pokémon instead."

Kenny pumped a fist into the air, cheering, "Woot! Imma get a fossil Pokémon!" Kenny then reached into his bag and pulled out a chocolate bar. "I'll eat this to celebrate," Kenny said, "Also before I get started on cooking dinner."

"A chocolate bar?" Dawn asked, curious.

Nodding in confirmation, Kenny went on, "Nothing is as satisfying as a bar of milk chocolate. Pure, no nothing in it, just sweet brown goodness." Kenny then proceeded to unwrap the chocolate bar, saying, "Sometimes, you just gotta enj-"

"Nya?"

Dawn and Kenny stopped short when they heard the cry of a Skitty sound out, being familiar due to running into May's Skitty in Petalburg City, where Kenny declared he'd catch his own Skitty. "...Oh yeah," Dawn said, "We're on Route 116, where Skitty can be fou-" Dawn was cut off when Kenny held his left index and middle fingers to cover her lips.

"...Hush now, you don't wanna scare it off," Kenny said.

The two reborn trainers waited for a moment in silence before hearing the Skitty cry out, "Nya?" again. Dawn and Kenny turned around to look when they heard some bushes rustling, then saw the rustling bushes. A few moments later, a wild Skitty poked its face out from the bushes.

Kenny smirked in happy amusement. "That's a wild Skitty, alright."

Dawn noticed something off about the Skitty, however. "...May's Skitty's face area was a pale light cream color, but this one's face area is more kind of yellowish." The wild Skitty then walked out of the bushes towards Kenny, revealing its more yellowish face more, as well as yellowish lower body, and more reddish upper body and tail end. "...It's a shiny Skitty," Dawn muttered dryly, "Of course it's a shiny Skitty."

The wild shiny Skitty looked at Kenny, or rather the chocolate bar he held. It crouched down as if to pounce, sticking its butt in the air while shaking it a bit. Then the shiny Skitty leapt right towards Kenny's chocolate bar, but failed to jump high enough. That didn't stop it from trying a few more time, even as Kenny turned to look at Dawn. "...It wants the chocolate," Kenny said.

"Well try breaking off a piece and offering it to the Skitty," Dawn said. Doing as his friend suggested, Kenny broke off a piece of the chocolate and held that piece out to the shiny Skitty. It sniffed at the piece before nibbling down on it, but upon nibbling on it the Skitty quickly wolfed it down, finding it to be delicious. Skitty then tried jumping for the rest of Kenny's chocolate bar again.

Having heard the commotion, Zarbon came over to see what was wrong, standing next to Kenny. Seeing Zarbon, Skitty immediately leapt at him while crying out angrily, using Fury Swipes which, as Kenny saw it, looked kind of like rapid fire fisticuffs. Zarbon was hardly hurt by the attack, and instead merely grabbed and held the shiny Skitty, before looking to Kenny in confusion. "Zarbon, I aim to have Skitty here join the cringe posse," Kenny said.

"...Well you did say you wanted to catch a Skitty," Dawn remarked, still with dry tone and expression as this will be Kenny's fifth shiny Pokémon.

Turning to look at the shiny Skitty, Kenny said, "So how about it, Skitty? Wanna join my cringe posse and eat more chocolate bar?" Kenny held up the chocolate bar he had, as if to entice Skitty more. Skitty nodded enthusiastically as it tried struggling out of Zarbon's hold. Kenny had Zarbon let the Skitty go, who then hopped down, scampered over to Kenny, and tried hopping up while on its little hind legs, being just adorable.

"Hey Kenny," Dawn said, "If you still have one of the Moon Balls that Kurt made for you, use one to catch the Skitty."

Kenny looked curious. "Why?"

"Moon Balls work better when used against Pokémon that evolve via use of a Moon Stone," Dawn explained, "Which includes Skitty. You don't HAVE to evolve it, but since Skitty does evolve that way, the Moon Ball will work better."

Kenny nodded in understanding, before taking out a Moon Ball and using it on Skitty. It went into the Moon Ball, which then fell softly to the ground before it shook for a bit. It then made a ping sound, indicating capture. "Sweetness, I caught a Skitty!" Kenny cheered. He then picked up the Moon Ball that now held his newly caught shiny Skitty, before scanning it with his pokédex. "It's another dude joining the cringe posse," Kenny remarked.

Gesturing to Kenny, Dawn asked, "So what will you name him?"

Smirking, Kenny said, "Given his more reddish fur, his attack that looked like he was throwing out rapid fire fisticuffs, his fondness for chocolate bars, there is only one name fitting for him." Holding up the Moon Ball that held his Skitty, Kenny declared, "I shall name him Jibanyan!"

Dawn shot Kenny another dry look. "...Of course you would name him that."

...

The reborn trainers and their Pokémon celebrated Kenny's capture of Jibanyan the Skitty, as well as Dawn's earlier capture of Jessie the Cascoon. They all ate their fill, and Dawn was amused at how Kenny had Jibanyan sit on his lap as he fed him cookout curry. Kenny was even gently petting his shiny Skitty, clearly happy that he now owned a Skitty. Dawn could tell that Kenny planned to make Jibanyan a vital member of the cringe posse.

Later after dinner, Dawn and Kenny were settling down to sleep for the night. Dawn opened the flap to Kenny's tent to wish him goodnight, but stopped short when she saw that Kenny had already fallen asleep, with Jibanyan cuddled up against him while sticking out of the sleeping bag. Dawn couldn't help but smile gently at the cute scene, highlighted by how there were smears of chocolate on Jibanyan's face as he slept.

"...Goodnight, you two," Dawn whispered before letting the tent flap down.

END, CHAPTER NINETY-TWO

Author's notes;

This chapter sees Dawn and Kenny save a Devon Corporation employee from two Team Scorn grunts in Petalburg Woods, but said employee only had info relevant to the fossil revival team over at Devon Corporation. From this and the reveal that there is a Root Fossil and Claw Fossil over in Lavaridge Town waiting for transport to Rustboro City, Dawn and Kenny deduce that Team Scorn is after those fossils, thus extra security is arranged.

Later over on Route 116, after a heart to heart where Dawn agrees to let Kenny take the offered fossil Pokémon, Kenny is met up by, and he catches, the Skitty that he wanted, which just so happened to end up being shiny. The next chapter will see Dawn and Kenny back in Rustboro City, meeting up with Roxanne at the local trainer school, where they will help out with the students. Don't turn that dial, because the Rustboro times are only getting started.

Dawn's Pokémon: (on hand) Chi-Chi (female Infernape), Leni (female Lucario), Froppy (female Toxicroak), Pakura (female Torchic), Jack (male Gallade), Jessie (male Cascoon)

Kenny's Pokémon: (on hand) Zarbon (male Machamp), Godzilla (male Tyraniar), Priestess (female Liligant; Hisuian; alpha), Jibanyan (male Skitty; shiny), Husky (male Mudkip), Endive (male Chikorita)
