Samuel and Debra growled and snarled at Claudia while Daryl, Caroline, Katherine and Connor pointed their weapons at Claudia, Alexandro and Fernando and Claudia sighed, rolling her eyes.
"I really should've killed you the moment you arrived at the gate," Claudia said to Daryl.
Nikki frowned when she turned to look up at the railing and her eyes widened. She started poking Murphy's right shoulder until he looked at her and she pointed up at the railing.
"Christ!" Murphy said after he looked up and he saw four Apocalipsis sitting on their haunches on the railing.
"Lord's name," Connor warned.
"Look!" he said and Connor turned to look up at the railing.
"Oh shit!"
Daryl, Caroline and Katherine turned to see the Apocalipsis leaping to the ground and the Apocalipsis landed with a soft thud. Samuel and Debra stood between Alexandro, Fernando, Claudia and the kids as they snarled and snapped their jaws and Murphy placed Nikki down next to her brother. He removed the guns from the inner pockets of the black Navy pea coat and he went to stand next to Connor.
"Get the kids outta here!" Daryl said to Jeffrey. Jeffrey nodded as he and Katherine headed for the sliding doors and Jeffrey signaled for the kids to go after the sliding doors opened.
"Bye, Dad," Chandler said.
"Bye, Dad," Peter said.
"Bye, Mama," Mark said.
"Bye, Mama," Nikki said.
Jeffrey felt the tears in his eyes as Samuel and Debra turned to look at the kids and they waved goodbye. The kids followed him and Katherine outside as Jeffrey ran to the white van and he opened the van's back doors. He helped the kids and Katherine inside the white van as the closed the back doors and he headed for the driver's seat.
In the lobby, the four Apocalipsis moved closer as Daryl and Caroline aimed the crossbows and Murphy and Connor aimed the guns.
"Are you gonna help us or just stand there?!" Caroline shouted as she glanced back at Claudia, Alexandro and Fernando.
"What do you think?" Claudia said as she ran and Alexandro and Fernando's mouths dropped open. Samuel and Debra ran after her as she headed for the staircase and she ran up the stairs. She felt something hit her back as she slammed into the steps and she felt her ribs breaking. "Shit!"
She tried to crawl up the stairs when she was flipped onto her back and she looked into Samuel's angry eyes. Debra was next to him as Claudia breathed hard through her nose and Samuel moved closer.
Claudia's scream caused the four Apocalipsis to turn to the left and Daryl, Caroline, Murphy and Connor fired their weapons. The heads of Apocalipsis exploded as the bodies fell to the floor and Daryl and Caroline ran to the staircase. He pulled his sister into him after they saw Samuel and Debra eating Claudia and he led Caroline back to the sliding doors.
"Is she….?" Alexandro asked and Daryl nodded. Alexandro and Fernando watched them leave then Alexandro and Fernando walked to the staircase. They aimed their guns at Samuel and Debra then fired and Samuel and Debra's heads exploded. Alexandro carefully walked up the stairs when he looked down at Claudia, sighed, aimed the gun and fired the gun at her head. He headed down the stairs and he and Fernando headed out of the main lobby.
Outside, Daryl, Murphy, Connor and Caroline got in the white van as Daryl closed the back doors and he headed for the passenger seat. Murphy held his arms out and Caroline went to sit next to him. He wrapped his arms around her as Jeffrey started the engine and the white van headed down the paved road.
Paris – the Eiffel Tower
Carol stood near the base of the Tower while she watched Judith, Armond, RJ and Hershel playing with a soccer ball and some of the other kids and Dog was running around them. Their laughter echoed around her as she smiled and she leaned against the metal beam.
Suddenly, the air turned cold and a blue light caused everything to look blue. She heard the sounds of harps, violins and heavenly singing and she rubbed her arms. She glanced over to her left while the Blue Lady appeared and Carol watched her walking closer.
"Hello," the Blue Lady said in English.
"Hello," Carol said with a small nod. "Do you have any word on Daryl or Caroline?"
"No. I do not."
"Then what good are you?"
The Blue Lady arched an eyebrow as Carol crossed her arms under her breasts and the Blue Lady folded her hands in front of her.
"I know you do not trust me….," the Blue Lady said.
"What was your first clue? Look. I know you won't tell me where they are. Just tell me where they'd go if or when they return from this so-called trip," Carol said.
"They are heading for the cathedral."
"The cathedral?"
"Yes."
"Which cathedral?"
"The most famous one," the Blue Lady said then she vanished. The air became warmer as the blue light, harps, violins and heavenly singing faded and Carol frowned.
"You're just as bad as Jeb. No. You're worse," Carol whispered. She headed for the man-made shacks as Negan walked closer and he noticed the angry look in her eyes.
"What's wrong? Negan asked.
"I'll tell you once I find the others. Go get the kids."
When Carol had found Maggie, Mercer, Mike, Dawsons, Hornsby and Negan had gotten RJ, Hershel, Dog and Judith, they stood near the cart and Maggie noticed the annoyed look on Carol's face.
"What's wrong?" Maggie asked.
"I'm not sure if I should tell you," Carol said.
"Why not?" Lance asked.
"Because you'll think I'm nuts."
"Won't know until you tell us," Negan said with a smile.
"I already told you," Carol said and he thought for a few seconds.
"Did Jeb contact you?"
"Who's Jeb?" Mike asked.
"He's this Earth spirt Daryl, Caroline and I met a few years ago," she said and told them about Jeb.
"Why didn't he stop the Commonwealth from taking over?" Maggie asked as she glared at Hornsby.
"He told me there are things that have to happen and he has no power to stop them."
"Like Uncle Daryl and Aunt Caroline getting kidnapped," Judith said.
"Among other things."
Maggie saw the sadness in Carol's eyes as she wondered what Jeb or the other Earth spirts could have done if they had been able to.
"It wasn't Jeb who contacted me," Carol said then paused. "It was the Blue Lady. She is the Earth spirit here in Paris."
"What did she tell you?" Mercer asked.
"She said that Daryl and Caroline are alive and they are on a mission."
"What mission?"
"She didn't say. All she told me is Daryl and Caroline went somewhere with people the Blue Lady said were friends of Caroline."
"What friends?" Maggie asked.
"I don't think they're friends as much as the people who kidnapped them or they were sold to."
"Shit."
"I think you're right. All of this sounds like a lot of bullshit to me," Lance said.
"I agree," Mercer said and Hornsby gave him a stunned looked.
"Did the Blue Lady say where they were or when they get back?" Negan asked.
"No. She didn't. All she could tell me is they'll returned to this cathedral when or if they come back," Carol said.
"A cathedral?" Lance asked as he thought then he frowned. "There are a lot of them around here."
"She said it was the most famous one."
"She's talking about Notre Dame," Negan said and they looked at him with puzzled looks. "My first wife, Lucille… She liked watching the cartoon Hunchback movie."
"Does anyone know how to get there?" Dawsons asked and they shook their heads.
"Does anyone know how to get where?" Aramis asked as he walked closer.
"We just found out that our friends might be somewhere near Notre Dame," Carol explained.
"Then your friends are lost."
"Why do you say that?" Maggie asked.
"If they truly are at the Cathedral? They have been taken by the Church."
"And who are they?" Mercer asked.
"They are the most powerful people in Paris. If you are under their protection, you thrive. If you are not…"
"You're doomed," Negan said.
"Or dead."
Carol heard the truth in his voice as her stomach sank and she frowned.
"Does anyone around here know how to get to Notre Dame?" Lance asked.
"Yes. The problem is you will not find anyone who will take you there," Aramis said as he walked away and Carol lightly thumped the side of the cart.
Barcelona – a week and a half later
The storage car gently rocked while Daryl stood near the crates and he looked at the kids, Jeffrey, Caroline, Katherine, Connor and Murphy. He thought about the trip back to the train depot as he frowned and Caroline walked to him. She felt the frustration and worry coming from her brother as they locked eyes and they had a silent conversation. He blinked his eyes a few times then nodded and she patted his right upper arm.
"Got any idea what we're gonna do once we get back to Paris?" Caroline asked.
"We need to find a way home," Daryl said then lowered his head. She knew what was on his mind and she nudged his right arm to make him look up.
"Murphy wants to go with us."
"He does?"
"He told me he goes where I go."
"What about Connor?"
"Not sure what he wants to do."
"What about the kids?"
"Dunno. All I know is Connor, Katherine and Murphy wanna adopt them."
"What about you?"
Sighing, Caroline leaned against the crates and she crossed her arms under her breasts. He felt a conflict of emotions moving through her and he tilted his head to one side.
"You ain't her," he said in a soft voice and she lowered her head.
"I know that," she said with a frown.
"Then don't let what she did prevent you from gettin' the family you deserve."
"You sound like you're speakin' from experience."
"Yeah. Never thought much of families. Not with the one me and Merle had. Didn't see the point. It's stopped me from makin' one with Carol and Sophia after Ed died."
Daryl lowered his head and she felt the sadness moving through her head.
"That's why losin' Sophia hurt me as much as it hurt Carol," Daryl explained and they were a little startled as the storage car rocked.
"Easy," Murphy said in a calm voice as Nikki started crying and he rocked her.
"Think we hit something?" Chandler asked.
"Maybe. Or hit a bump on the track," Connor said and Peter moved closer. Connor slid his right arm around Peter's shoulder and Peter leaned against him.
Daryl saw the happy look on their faces as he sighed and Caroline lightly nudged him. He knew she wanted him to continue talking and he sighed, rubbing his face with his hands.
"The thing I learned is that blood isn't the only thing that makes someone family. Rick? He became my brother. Same with Glenn and Aaron. Maggie? Beth? Connie? Michonne? They became my sisters," he said then paused from the look she was giving him. "Uh…."
"No. It's ok," Caroline said.
"Hershel? Maggie's dad? He became like a dad to me. Could talk to him about anythin'. When I felt like talkin'," he said then paused. "Patricia? You never met her. She worked with Hershel back at the farm. She… She became like a mom to me. Took my shit after I got hurt while lookin' fer Sophia and was the only one who could get me to wash up."
"Wish I had met her," she said and Daryl nodded.
"Then there was Carol. I was a damn fool fer not actin' on how I felt about her," he said with a sigh.
"Because you didn't feel you were worthy of her."
"Yeah," he said with a nod. "When Judith was born? I knew someone had to look after her. Rick wasn't in any shape to do it."
"I remember you tellin' me about feedin' her fer the first time."
"Never told anyone how I felt while holdin' her. It was like… It was like somethin' woke up inside me. Like I wanted…"
"You wanted to be a daddy?"
"Yeah. Got a little jealous when Maggie, Carol, Beth or even Rick held her."
Caroline softly smiled and he ducked his head. She nudged him and he lightly shook his head.
"Not really sure how, but I could always tell when she was upset about shit. Would go over and we'd talk."
"Dad did that with me. He said it was his Daddy Radar. This inner sense that somethin' was wrong."
"After Rick…. After Rick went missin', I just… I just stepped up and helped Michonne look after Judith and RJ. I did go off and look fer Rick, but I would always wonder what they were doin'."
"But you also started wonderin' if they still needed you. That's why you stayed away."
Daryl nodded his head. They stood in silence as the storage car rattled around them and Daryl leaned against the crates.
"Know what?" she asked and he shook his head. "You're right. I'm not gonna let Jessie prevent me from gettin' my happy endin'."
Daryl watched while Caroline headed for Murphy, Mark and Nikki as she settled down next to them and Daryl folded one ankle over the other.
Paris – the Eiffel Tower
Armond walked to Judith, Hershel and RJ and he saw the sad look on their faces.
"What is wrong?" Armond said in English.
"We know where Uncle Daryl and Aunt Caroline are," Judith said.
"Where are they?"
"Notre Dame," RJ said.
"That is good. The Church will protect them."
"Your grandfather said the Church won't let them go," Judith said.
"Then we'll have to rescue them," Armond said with a smile.
"You know how to get to Notre Dame?" Hershel asked.
"Yes!"
Armond waved for them to follow as he ran off and Hershel, RJ and Judith looked at each other. They knew Carol, Maggie and the others would be angry with them for running off, but they also wanted to rescue Daryl and Caroline. Nodding, they ran after Armond and they headed out the front gate. None of them noticed Jac watching them as he frowned, shook his head then walked away.
Paris – the train depot
The train came to a stop as Daryl and Connor opened the door to the storage car then they hopped down. They turned to help Murphy, Jeffrey, Katherine and Caroline lower the kids to the ground and the kids stood next to Daryl and Connor. Murphy, Jeffrey, Katherine and Caroline handed them the plastic containers with Doctor Montoya's information and Daryl and Connor placed the plastic containers on the ground. Finally, Murphy, Jeffrey, Katherine and Caroline hopped down as they headed for the car and Daryl opened the car doors.
"Not sure if we can all fit in the car," Daryl said as he looked in the car.
"Too bad we left the bikes behind," Caroline said.
"What about the truck?" Jeffrey said as he pointed to the truck sitting near the train depot building.
"Is that one of yers?" Daryl asked Connor.
"Yeah," Connor said. He started to head for the depot when he felt someone tap his back and he turned to look at Katherine. "What?"
"You better let me talk with them," she said.
"Oh. Right. They're not supposed t'know I can speak anything, but Latiin and I don't have my long hair or beard anymore."
Connor walked back to Daryl while Katherine walked in the depot and Daryl glanced at Connor.
"What's goin' on?" Daryl asked.
"Katherine's gonna see if we can borrow th'truck," Connor explained then he walked to the car. He opened the back door when he removed the robes he and Murphy usually wore and he made a sharp whistle to get his brother's attention. "Catch!"
Murphy caught the black robe after Connor had tossed the robe and Caroline helped him put the robe on. She moved the hood down to the tip of his nose and she shyly smiled when he kissed her lips.
"Stop," Caroline whispered.
Daryl helped Connor with putting on his robe as Katherine walked out of the depot with a tall man with black hair and dark eyes and Connor pulled the hood down to the tip of his nose.
"It is an honor to aide both of you," the man said in French as he nodded his head then looked at the kids. "I hope you find good homes for these little ones."
"We thank you for your assistance," Katherine said in French and the man headed back to the depot.
"What did you tell him?" Daryl asked.
"I told him Cardinal and Bishops had gone on a mission to rescue some orphans."
"And he bought it?"
"Yep."
"Hunh."
After picking up the plastic containers, they walked to the truck as Daryl opened the doors to the cab as the truck and Daryl saw the keys were in the ignition.
"Who's gonna drive the car back to Notre Dame?" Caroline asked as she helped Mark get in the back of the truck.
"I will," Katherine said as she watched Connor and Murphy get in the back of the car. Katherine headed for the car while Daryl, Jeffrey and Caroline helped Chandler, Peter and Nikki into the back of the truck then Caroline got in the back of the truck. Daryl, Caroline and Jeffrey picked up then slid the plastic containers in the back of the truck and Caroline went to sit with the kids. She watched Daryl close the back of the truck then he and Jeffrey headed for the cab of the truck.
"How long will it take to get to the church?" Jeffrey asked as they got into the cab of the truck and closed the doors.
"About three hours," Daryl said as he started the engine and put the truck in gear. Jeffrey looked at the glove compartment when he noticed the CD player in the dashboard and he opened the glove compartment door. He looked through the selections of CDs when he opened the CD case and he removed the CD.
"Mind?" Jeffrey asked as he held up the CD.
"Nope."
Jeffrey placed the CD into the slot when he pushed the button and Daryl steered the truck down the road. Daryl looked at the back of the car when the music started playing and he glanced at Jeffrey. Jeffrey had opened the window as he placed his right forearm out the window to hold onto the door then he started snapping the fingers of his left hand to the music. A memory of Rick doing the same thing years ago filled his mind and Daryl smiled.
"Why are you smiling like that?" Jeffrey asked.
"Rick does that," Daryl said.
"Yeah. He does," he said, but saw the sadness in Daryl's eyes. "What aren't you telling me?"
"It's about Carl."
"He's dead, isn't he?"
"Yeah. Walker bit him."
"Damn."
They became silent while Daryl held the steering wheel in his hands and Jeffrey looked out the window.
"What about Rick? Is he alright?" Jeffrey asked.
"Dunno. Like I said. Been a long time since I've seen him."
"What happened? Did he leave your group."
"Yeah."
"Why would he leave his wife and kids? He's dead, right?"
Daryl glanced at him as Jeffrey sighed and looked out the window. Daryl knew he should tell him what happened, but still didn't trust him and Daryl strummed his fingers on the steering wheel.
"He ain't dead. Never found a body," Daryl said.
"Then what happened?"
"He was trying to stop a horde of Walkers from gettin' to our camp. The only way to do that was to blow up the bridge connected our camp to the outside world."
"And you let him blow up the bridge?"
"Yeah," Daryl said with a nod. "I was up on a ridge. Shootin' Walkers to thin out the horde. Rick… He took aim with his gun and fired."
Jeffrey heard the pain and what he felt was guilt in Daryl's voice and Jeffrey nodded his head.
"I went to look fer his… I went to look fer him after the fire went out. There were Walker body parts scattered about. Had to put down a few that were still movin'. But he wasn't among them."
"Maybe he fell in the water."
"That's what I thought. Followed the river down to the ocean, but never found anythin'. Spend years lookin' fer any sign of him."
"You think someone might have found him?"
"If they did then why didn't Rick send word or they have someone come and tell us?"
"Maybe he was caught by someone like Becker."
"Hmph."
Daryl thought about what Michonne had told him about finding Rick's cowboy boots and phone on an abandoned boat on the island where she found Virgil. He often wondered how Rick's cowboy boots and phone had gotten there. He also thought about Michonne telling him about the drawing on the phone's screen and the writing. Why would Rick write something in another language or make a drawing of Michonne and Judith?
"Michonne…. She found Rick's cowboy boots and his old cellphone on an abandoned boat. She went to look fer him," Daryl said.
"Did she take the kids?" Jeffrey asked.
"Nope. She left them with me."
"Guess you became their dad."
"Yeah."
They sat in silence while Daryl tapped his fingers on the steering wheel and thought about Judith and RJ.
Paris - Notre Dame Cathedral
Armond, Hershel, RJ and Judith crouched behind the bushes while they looked at the cathedral and Judith frowned.
"We need to go," Armond said in English as he pointed to the left. They carefully moved through the bushes when they came to a side staircase and he held his right hand up to stop them. They slowly headed up the stairs when they came to an iron door and Armond tried to get the door open. "Locked."
"Now what?" RJ asked when he felt someone place their hand on his right shoulder and they slowly turned around. Behind them were two guards in black body armor, black riot helmets and black boots and the guards had rifles pointed at them.
"Well, well, well. What do we have here?" the guard asked in French to his companion and the guards smiled.
"Looks like we've caught some thieves," his companion said in French and he softly laughed
"They look a little young to be thieves."
"Doesn't matter nowadays."
"True," the guard said as he gave Judith, RJ, Hershel and Armond a cold look. "Move."
"Where are you taking us?" Judith asked.
"She wanted to know where you are taking us," Armond translated.
"We're taking you to where all naughty children are taken," the guard said in French and the other guard opened the iron door. "Move!"
They walked inside as the guard closed the door behind them with a loud bang and the sound echoed around them.
"Knew we shoulda brought Aunt Carol with us," RJ whispered.
"Or my mom," Hershel said.
"Quiet!" the guard shouted in French and they headed down the hallway. They arrived in the main hallway while Judith, RJ and Hershel scanned the room with their eyes and they headed for the door. Judith wondered what they would do if she, RJ and Hershel ran, but she didn't want to leave Armond behind and she sighed, flexing her fingers.
"You cannot do this!" Armond shouted in French as the guards shoved them in the holding cell.
"You should have thought of that before you tried to break in," the guard said in French and his companion smiled.
"My grandfather is Aramis!"
"The leader of the Tower?"
"Yes! You harm us and it will be war!"
The guards laughed as they shook their heads, closed the cell door and their footsteps echoed down the hallway. Armond called for them to come back while he slammed his fists against the door while Judith looked up at the small window with the iron bars, walked to the small, wooden cot, sat down and placed her head in her hands.
