Chapter One-hundred and sixty-six: Shalour Shuffle

After extensive traveling, the heroes made it to Shalour City, where Ash and the reborn trainers would each be battling for their respective third Kalos gym badges. The heroes first stopped off at the local Pokémon Center where, among other things, the reborn trainers rotated their respective parties to best prep them for the fight they would have against Korrina's gym. Ash also prepared, wanting to work with his Pokémon to get them ready. As the group worked outside of the Pokémon Center to get their Pokémon ready for the upcoming gym battles, they were approached by Korrina who was followed by her Lucario.

The heroes saw Korrina and her Lucario approach, but noticed right away that Korrina seemed depressed. "Hey Korrina," Trip greeted, "I'd say it's great to see you then ask about battling you, but you're clearly not feeling okay. What happened?"

"My grandfather had to take over running the Shalour gym," Korrina explained, "Which is located in the Tower of Mastery."

"Hang on, hang on, hang on," Dawn said, "What do you mean your grandfather had to take over running the Shalour gym? What happened?"

Korrina let out a troubled sigh. "...Due to my failure to prevent Team Scorn from getting a hold of using Mega Evolution, Shalour gym tradition dictates that I step down if someone else is available to run it for me, at least until I perform an act to regain worthiness. My grandfather is available, so I stepped down as the leader of the Shalour gym and had my grandfather take my place."

"Did your grandfather force this on you?" Kenny asked, immediately suspicious.

Gently shaking her head, Korrina said, "No, although I think it's best that you hear it from him." The heroes, still wanting to know what all was going on here, decided to follow Korrina and her Lucario over to the Tower of Master, where Korrina told them her grandfather was already waiting.

Later, the group reached the sandy shores of the beach that faced the Tower of Mastery. Normally, one would have to wait for the tide to recede and open up a path that one can walk. However, due to time being of the essence in the wake of Team Scorn successfully stealing what all they stole from Mabel, several boats were available for the group to take across; Dawn when she saw there wouldn't be sufficient space instead opted to surf across while riding on Tsukune, who knows Surf. After the ride the group took across the water, the group reached the island that the Tower of Mastery was on.

Heading inside, the group is greeted by Korrina's grandfather Gurkinn. "Yes, I did have to relieve Korrina of her duty," Gurkinn said, "But only because tradition dictated it. I would have been fine with ignoring tradition and letting Korrina continue onward. I at least was able to convince Korrina to keep her Key Stone and her Lucario's Lucarionite, which she also tried turning over to me, but more out of shame for her failure than actual tradition-based requirement."

"Yeesh," Bonnie said, "Mega Evolution must be a really big deal if that's the case."

Gently shaking his head, Gurkinn said, "Young lady, you don't know the half of it." Gurkinn then led the group somewhere in the Tower of Mastery, leading them to a large statue of a Mega Lucario. "...Long ago," Gurkinn said, "My ancestor came to this land with his Lucario. Here on this island, my ancestor found two peculiar stones, which ended up being a Key Stone and a Lucarionite. With them, they achieved the world's first Mega Evolution. Ever since, those of my lineage had lived here, on Mega Evolution Island."

Dawn nodded in understanding. "...Korrina is your granddaughter, meaning she's part of that lineage as well. That would explain why she stepped down as gym leader out of shame."

"What surprised me about that is the fact Korrina did so willingly and of her own volition," Kenny said, "I half-expected you Gurkinn to have become an absolute jerk and more or less bully Korrina into stepping down while you took over. But instead you turned out to have been an entirely reasonable dude about the whole thing, and was even willing to ignore the tradition and allow Korrina to remain in place."

Gurkinn nodded in understanding, albeit with a grim look on his face. "...Yes, many would suspect that I'd be steamed out the wazoo and blame Korrina for everything that happened involving Team Scorn stealing what all they stole. But she honestly in the least cannot be blamed for what happened, Team Scorn was just too crafty and clever. Even I would have failed to stop them if I were there instead of her." Letting out a sigh, Gurkinn said, "I only went along with it because Korrina pointed out that Shalour gym tradition dictates it. However, I did give Korrina credit towards proving herself worthy again for her respect to the tradition."

Shifting in his stance, Ash said, "I got it on the way here that we normally would have such ready access to the gym because of the tide covering the path, but we got here anyway due to using boats because time is supposedly of the essence. Why is time of the essence?"

"The Tower of Mastery recently received a load of Mega Stones, some of which came from the load that I found after Champion Dawn accidentally broke that one rock," Gurkinn began to explain, "I have reason to believe that Team Scorn, who would logically feel emboldened by their success at Pomace Mountain, would come here to try and steal as many of those Mega Stones as possible. They may even try to steal the Scroll of Secrets."

"Scroll of Secrets?" Serena said in a questioning tone.

"A hidden treasure of my family," Gurkinn explained, "Listing what all one needs to be a gym leader of the Shalour gym."

"Question," Kenny said, "Aren't gym leaders appointed by the league of the region they operate in? And yet you're acting like being the leader of the Shalour gym is a family business that the Kalos League has no say in."

Nodding to Kenny's point, Gurkinn said, "Typically, yes, the Kalos League could trump our word, but typically they leave gyms to their own devices unless something crops up that warrants league officials intervening." Sighing with some embarrassment, Gurkinn said, "Like how many challengers have complained about being forced to wait until the tide receded so they can get to the gym, as well as how they were wiped due to the Shalour gym's use of Mega Evolution. The Kalos League has ruled that the Shalour gym is to provide boats so that challengers can get over if the tide hasn't receded, and the Shalour gym can't use Mega Evolution unless a challenger can also use Mega Evolution as well."

Folding her arms over her chest, Dawn said, "Yeah, this wasn't the first time we've seen complaints filed against a gym, although it's the first instance that we've seen it happen here in Kalos." To Gurkinn, Dawn went on, "But back to what you said about Team Scorn potentially coming by to steal both the Mega Stones and this Scroll of Secrets thingy."

"It would be terrible if Team Scorn stole the Mega Stones," Gurkinn said, "And although it wouldn't have much monetary value to them, the Scroll of Secrets would also be a terrible loss if Team Scorn stole it." Gurkinn then had the heroes and Serena follow him to where all of the Mega Stones inside of the Tower of Mastery were being kept.

...

The heroes, and even Korrina, were all amazed to see just how many Mega Stones were in the Tower of Mastery. "Yes," Gurkinn said as he showed the group around the room the Mega Stones were all kept in, "We have plenty here. Oh, that reminds me." Turning to face the reborn trainers, Gurkinn said, "Kenny, Trip, I have an offer for you. Dawn already has two Pokémon who can Mega Evolve and have the Mega Stones for it, but both of you only have one each. Would either of you be interested in a second Mega Stone so you can also Mega Evolve two Pokémon?"

Shrugging, Kenny asked, "Well what all Mega Stones are there?" Gurkinn then proceeded to list off and explain the Mega Stones to Kenny and Trip. After going through each of the Mega Stones, Kenny said, "I think the Scizorite will be best for me so I can Mega Evolve my shiny Scizor Cell."

"I have a Sceptile named Dovahgex," Trip said, "So I can make use of the Sceptilite." Gurkinn agreed, and thus Kenny and Trip obtained a Scizorite and a Sceptilite respectively.

After the boys got ther new Mega Stones, Gurkinn said, "If you boys can work with Mega Evolution as easily as you did when I first saw you use it, then I have zero worries that you'll be able to use these Mega Stones to achieve Mega Evolution without worries of your Pokémon going berserk like Korrina's Lucario did when it had a bit of trouble controling its aura while Mega Evolved." Hearing Korrina sigh in a depressed tone and slump over in depression, Gurkinn said in a very clearly regretful tone, "Ah, ah, ah, Korrina sweetie, grandpa didn't mean to upset you!"

The heroes were surprised to see Gurkinn fret over Korrina like this. The reborn trainers were especially surprised, and Dawn in particular didn't quite remember Gurkinn being so relaxed in personality; she would have guessed that Kenny's original belief of Gurkinn being really strict and unreasonable would have been more accurate. As the heroes relaxed and saw that Gurkinn was far more reasonable than what they would have expected, they heard an alarm go off. "That sound," Gurkinn said, "It's the alarm for when someone removes the Scroll of Secrets from its hiding location without first pressing the switch!"

Gurkinn then ran out of the room, prompting the heroes and Korrina to all follow him. They too were worried about the Scroll of Secrets being stolen, and prayed that it wouldn't be too late.

Gurkinn had led the heroes and Korrina back out into the large room where the giant Mega Lucario statue waited. When the group all got there, they saw a pair of thieves had just finished climbing down from the Mega Lucario's statue. The first thief was clearly female, given her slender build with an upper chest area just starting to get more pronounced, while the second thief was male and somewhat shorter than the female thief. The male thief looked a tad starved, if his thinning face that not even his gaiter mask could cloak the thinning of were an indication of that.

Both thieves wore black gaiter masks up covering everything from the top of the bridge of their nose down, hooded baggy coats that easily covered their bodies and cloaked their heads as the hoods were up, baggy jeans, and clunky sneakers. In the female thief's right hand was a scroll. "Curses!" the female thief scowled, "We've been caught! Now we'll have to fight our way out of here if we want to make off with the Scroll of Secrets!"

"We won't go down without a fight, I'll have you know," the male thief said. Tossing up a pokéball, the male thief said, "Go, Herdier!"

"Go, Skitty!" the female thief said, tossing up a pokéball and calling a Skitty out in the process.

"Don't worry, we'll help get the Scroll of Secrets back," Ash said as he stepped forward, only to be cut off by Gurkinn holding an arm out to stop Ash from proceeding.

Gently shaking his head, Gurkinn said, "No, young man. Leave this to me and Korrina." Turning to look at Korrina, Gurkinn said, "Young lady, you know what to do. Save the Scroll of Secrets from those thieves!"

"Got it, grandpa!" Korrina said as she called out her Lucario and immediately Mega Evolved it. After it had Mega Evolved, Korrina's Lucario looked at where its opponents both stood. Gesturing forward, Korrina called out, "Lucario, use Power-Up Punch on Skitty!"

"Skitty, use Assist!" the female thief said.

"Herdier, use Work Up!" the male thief called out.

As Lucario rushed in at the female thief's Skitty, it used its Assist attack, which surprisingly enough copied the move Sky Uppercut, parrying Lucario's Power-Up Punch perfectly. Meanwhile, the male thief's Herdier used Work Up uncontested. The female thief then looked a bit troubled, as if she wasn't expecting something that packed that much of a punch, although only Dawn caught the look in the female thief's eyes. The female thief then decided to change tactics. "Skitty, use Tackle!"

"Herdier, use Work Up again!" the male thief ordered.

"Lucario," Korrina said, "Use Aura Sphere on Skitty!"

Lucario charged up and cast an Aura Sphere attack at Skitty as it rushed for Lucario. Skitty ended up getting blasted back and knocked out by the Mega Evolution enhanced Aura Sphere. As for Herdier, it used Work Up again without issue. The female thief recalled her fainted Skitty before tossing up another pokéball while saying, "Go Munchlax!" After the female thief's Munchlax came out, the female thief called out, "Munchlax, use Metronome!"

"Herdier, use Work Up again!" the male thief called out.

"Lucario, use Power-Up Punch on Munchlax!" Korrina commanded. As Lucario rushed in to attack Munchlax, it successfully got off Metronome which, to everyone's surprise (especially the thieves who looked worried to Dawn's note) ended up calling up Magma Storm. Luckily it missed, but Dawn could see it in the female thief's face that Korrina's Lucario avoiding the conjured Magma Storm was a very close call. Lucario then went on to knock out the female thief's Munchlax with a single Power-Up Punch, although the male thief's Herdier got Work Up off successfully for a third time in a row.

The female thief scoffed in annoyance. "Curses, I'm out of Pokémon!"

"Then I will have to pick up the slack it would seem," the male thief said, "Herdier, use Work Up again!"

"Lucario, use Aura Sphere!" Korrina called out. As Herdier tried using Work Up again, Lucario conjured and cast an Aura Sphere that knocked it out in one hit. That forced the male thief to recall his fainted Herdier and send out a Houndoom.

Gesturing forward, the male thief said, "Houndoom, use Dark Pulse!"

"Lucario, use Aura Sphere!" Korrina ordered. Lucario conjured and cast an Aura Sphere attack at the male thief's Houndoom, blasting it back and knocking it out, making its Dark Pulse fizzle out in the process before it could be fired off.

The male thief, as he recalled his fainted Houndoom, scoffed, "Well drat. Houndoom was my last Pokémon."

"I suppose that you would be heroes won't let my companion here and I get away with the Scroll of Secrets since we've lost," the female thief said as she threw the Scroll of Secrets at Gurkinn, who skillfully caught the Scroll of Secrets. As Gurkinn caught the Scroll of Secrets, the two thiefs turned around and ran out of the Tower of Mastery, fleeing from their failed attempt to steal a valuable treasure.

After the thieves were gone, Gurkinn let out a relaxed sigh. "Whew, that was a close one." Turning to look at Korrina, Gurkinn said, "Korrina, you have done well. Thanks to your efforts, you have saved the Scroll of Secrets from falling into thieving hands." Giving his granddaughter a wry look of amusement, Gurkinn went on, "I daresay that this helps to restore your worthiness in being the Shalour City gym leader."

"You... you really think so, grandpa?" Korrina said as she got teary eyed, before she burst into tears and threw her arms around her grandpa and hugged him. The heroes congratulated Korrina for a job well done.

After Korrina settled down, Gurkinn said, "Now then, as you've proven yourself worthy of being the gym leader again, you have to prepare. You have got a series of challengers waiting for you, and given the time of day you best ought to rest here for the night and in the morning get ready for the first challenger." Korrina nodded in understanding, and after thanking Gurkinn again, saw him and the heroes off as he was going to see the heroes to the mainland where they would be resting at the local Pokémon Center for the night.

But the heroes would be in for a bit of a surprise when they got to the local Pokémon Center.

...

"May?!" Ash exclaimed, "The one thief was you?!"

At the local Pokémon Center, the heroes were surprised to see the female thief, but Gurkinn told her it was okay to drop the act, allowing the female thief to uncover her head and face and reveal herself to be May, one of Ash's former traveling companions from the Hoenn region. "Yeah, and the other thief is Max," May said, "Heh, long time no see, huh?"

Gestuirng to May, Clemont asked, "What were you and that Max boy doing, dressing up as thieves and trying to steal the Scroll of Secrets over at the Tower of Mastery?"

"It was all my doing, actually," Gurkinn confessed, "Seeing how down my granddaughter was because she was beating herself up for what happened at Pomace Mountain, I decided to stage an opportunity for Korrina to redeem herself, if only in her own eyes. As such, I was able to recruit this girl and her little brother who came here to Kalos because the girl wants to try her hand at Pokémon Showcases."

The heroes seemed to understand what Gurkinn was trying to do and, seeing no harm came of it, relaxed. "...May did seem a little surprised with the attacks that her Skitty's Assist and Munchlax's Metronome called," Dawn remarked.

Letting out an embarrassed chuckle, May admitted, "Well I wasn't expecting Assist to call Sky Uppercut from Blaziken, nor was I expecting Metronome to call an attack that Max told me that he read in an old book is a move supposedly used by the legendary Pokémon Heatran. Max's repeated use of Work Up was actually a deliberate bid on his part to buy time for Korrina to knock out Herdier, he was actually trying to play it safe."

"Speaking of," Kenny began, "Where is Max?"

"He's at the hotel he and I are staying at while we're here in Kalos," May explained, "He clocked out after using medicines to treat our Pokémon who fought to help Korrina recover her confidence and sense of worth. It was actually Max's idea for us to use only Skitty, Munchlax, Herdier, and Houndoom as all of them are weak to fighting attacks which Korrina's Lucario knows. Make things easier for Korrina."

Clemont nodded in approval. "He's a smart kid."

"Wait a minute," Kenny began, "Houndoom is also part fire, which is strong against Lucario which is part steel. Couldn't Max have used his Mightyena instead?"

"That was Max's original plan, yes," May began to explain, "But when he saw that you and Dawn were there, he switched to Houndoom instead, figuring you two would recognize us right away and foil Gurkinn's plan unintentionally if you saw his Mightyena given that it's a shiny."

Dawn nodded in understanding. "Yeah, that does make sense." Giving May a wry look, Dawn said, "So May, you're gunning for the Pokémon Showcases here in Kalos now, are you?"

May nodded in the affirmative. "Oh yeah, totally. Maybe I'll see you guys at one of the Showcases I'll participate in?"

"I'm kind of interested in the Pokémon Showcases myself," Serena said, "So you can bet on it." May then said good-bye to the heroes, with the promise that they will see each other again while in Kalos.

Clapping his hands together, Ash said, "Oh man, it was great seeing an old friend again! And she was helping to restore Korrina's confidence with that bit involving the Scroll of Secrets!"

Turning to look at Gurkinn, Trip said, "Speaking of, what is written in the Scroll of Secrets? Secrets pertaining to Mega Evolution, perhaps?"

"Nah," Gurkinn said, "It just contains a list of general rules that I myself had hand written. Nothing too fancy." Holding up the Scroll of Secrets which ended up not being as special as the heroes had thought, Gurkinn said, "But the point remains that Korrina had successfully stopped thieves from making off with something from the Tower of Mastery. Oh, I'm going to have to ask that you all keep this a secret from my granddaughter."

The heroes all agreed and, after wishing Gurkinn good night, saw him off and proceeded to get ready for bed. As the heroes settled down for the night, Bonnie suddenly exclaimed, "Oh my goodness!"

Looking to his little sister, Clemont asked, "What is it, Bonnie?"

"I forgot to ask May if she'd like to marry you!" Bonnie replied, clearly freaked out by her fumble.

The rest of the heroes all relaxed, with Dawn gently shaking her head while Ash, Kenny, and Trip all chuckled a bit. Clemont, for his part, let out a resigned sigh. "There wouldn't of been any need for that anyway, Bonnie."

The following morning, the heroes made it to the Tower of Mastery again, where Korrina was ready to receive the first challenge from them. It ended up being Ash who, same as he did in the anime in Dawn's previous life, tried using a dance based strategy inspired by the moves he picked up from Tierno. However, he soon abandoned the dance based strategy and resolved to do things as he normally does. As a result, Ash ended up winning against Korrina on his first try against her, same as what had occurred in the anime in Dawn's previous life.

However, unlike the anime in her previous life, Dawn saw here that Ash used his Trevenant, Charizard, and alpha Hisuian Braviary. Ash also had a much easier time, which was signified by the fact that none of his Pokémon were defeated. As a matter of fact, Korrina's first two Pokémon, Mienfoo and Machoke, knew no attacks that worked on ghost type Pokémon, which Ash upon realizing it took advantage of by having Trevenant fight them and knock them out while Braviary tested them to see what all attacks they knew, also Braviary tried using the dance strategy and failed, only enduring as well as it did due to its quad-four resistance to fighting.

Then came the part where Korrina sent out and Mega Evolved her Lucario. Although it was Mega Evolved, Lucario still had some trouble with Trevenant, as the only move that Dawn observed Korrina ordering for Lucario to attack Trevenant with was Bone Rush, a ground type move which Trevenant, a partial grass type whose other typing didn't mitigate the ground resistance grass had, resisted. But those Bone Rushes were still strong, and Ash's Trevenant was barely keeping up due to using Drain Punch to damage Lucario while recovering some health at the same time.

When Lucario was getting worn down enough, Ash saw that Trevenant, even with recovering thanks to Drain Punch, would probably go down if it took another Bone Rush or two; a testament to the power of Mega Evolution. As such, when Korrina called for another Bone Rush, Ash swapped Trevenant out and sent in the perfectly fresh Charizard who, being a partial flying type, was immune to the ground type attack Bone Rush. Charizard, as it flew in the air, used Flamethrower at Ash's command and struck Korrina's Lucario, knocking it out and earning Ash both the win and a Rumble Badge.

Later that day, after Korrina's Pokémon were all rested and fully treated, Korrina had her battle with Kenny. During the battle, Kenny sent Hovernyan, his Espurr, out first thing when Korrina called out her Meinfoo. Although worried about the psychic type, Korrina still ordered Meinfoo to use High Jump Kick, but it was foiled when Kenny called Hovernyan back to send in Ban, his named Sableye. Being a ghost, Ban was immune to High Jump Kick, which missed due to Ban being immune thus causing the Meinfoo to suffer crashing recoil damage.

Ban then hacked away with his attacks until Meinfoo went down, as it knew nothing that could hurt a ghost Pokémon. Kenny repeated the same song and dance when Korrina sent out Machoke; send Hovernyan out first thing, then switch him out and have Ban take his place. Machoke, who knew nothing that could hurt Ban, was more or less a sitting duck as the named Sableye (who was self-conscious about not having nipples) scored another easy knock out for Kenny. It was with Korrina's third and final Pokémon that made Kenny use a different method.

Korrina called her Lucario out and Mega Evolved it, prompting Kenny to call out his shiny Scizor Cell and Mega Evolve him; Korrina was amazed to see a shiny Mega Evolved Pokémon. But her duel with Kenny had to continue, and after a fierce bout, Cell barely was able to defeat Lucario, mostly because both an Aura Sphere and a Power-Up Punch from Lucario both somehow managed to hit Cell on his abdomen; Kenny cursed his luck that Mega Evoltuion enhanced attacks managed to hit Cell right on his Mega Evolution enhanced shmeat. Regardless, Cell won, meaning Kenny won the battle and got a Rumble Badge.

After the battle, Kenny and the other heroes got a surprise when Hovernyan proceeded to begin evolving; by the time the process was done, Hovernyan was now a male Meowstic. He also seemed eager to try and perfect his usage of Power-Up Punch which, now that he was evolved, he actually showed the ability to use. He hasn't gotten it down pat just yet, but the named Meowstic saw that he now had the potential to learn Power-Up Punch, and that made him happy. Korrina then said that she'd need to rest for the night, but could face Dawn and Trip tomorrow morning.

The next day, Dawn and Trip both won their respective battles with Korrina, although both were of much lesser fanfare than the wins Ash and Kenny scored. Dawn's named Lucario knocked out Korrina's Meinfoo and Machoke with one Psychic each, then she Mega Evolved as a counter to Korrina Mega Evolving her Lucario, and then knocked out Korrina's Lucario with an Aura Sphere. Leni never took a single hit in that battle. Trip more or less did the same thing Dawn did, but had used his Sceptile Dovahgex instead, Mega Evolving it when Korrina had Mega Evolved her Lucario.

After Trip got his Rumble Badge following Dawn getting hers, Korrina was asked a few questions by a Kalos League representative who came in, having gotten it that she used Mega Evolution in a battle against a trainer who didn't have access to the same power. Ash, the trainer in question, stepped in and said he does have access to Mega Evolution, he just didn't use it due to forgetting about it in the excitement of battle. The Kalos League representative bought the story and left without further complaint, and after the representative was gone, Korrina thanked Ash for the save; she could have gotten into some really deep legal doo-doo otherwise, regardless of the fact Ash had beat her in the battle that they had.

...

"Coumarine City, huh?"

Korrina nodded in the affirmative to Ash's question. "It's where the next closest gym is located," Korrina explained, "The gym leader there uses strong grass Pokémon, but I can tell you got some Pokémon who will do just fine there."

Clapping his hands together, Kenny said, "Then it's off to Coumarine City for us!"

"In the morning," Dawn corrected, "It's late and we need to rest for the night." The heroes then thanked Korrina for her time and, after taking off from the Tower of Mastery, went to the local Pokémon Center and rested for the night. In the morning, the heroes once freshened up got back on the road, where they would be heading to the location of the next gym that Ash and the reborn trainers would be challenging.
