Chapter One-hundred and sixty-seven: Pancham Pandemonium

After a successful bout in Shalour City that saw Ash and the reborn trainers each earn their respective third Kalos gym badges, the heroes set off on the road for Coumarine City, the location of the fourth Kalos gym. Along the way, the heroes helped a pair of siblings who each owned a Meowstic, one owning the male version and the other owning the female version, with settling a family issue. Kenny got in on helping with the action, given that Hovernyan had recently evolved into Meowstic, also Kenny's named Meowstic now wore a cape that wrapped around his neck at the top like a scarf.

After the business where Kenny and Hovernyan helped the two siblings and their respective Meowstics, Kenny and one of his Pokémon helped out with an issue involving a rampaging wild Salamence; however, this time the Pokémon of Kenny's who helped out was Wigglytuff, Kenny's male gangster Wigglytuff who he caught back when he was a Jigglypuff that he named Wigglytuff. Kenny's Wigglytuff, channeling his inner dark skinned gentleman from the Detroit projects, helped a clumsy Wigglytuff prone to crying who worked at a Pokémon Center calm down a rampaging Salamence someone had ticked off.

The next adventure the heroes would have would also see Kenny shine a bit, although Serena would have a bit more focus...

...

The heroes, after their traveling, decided to take a break in the local park. While there, Serena decided to take the opportunity to brush her Fennekin's fur. "Hey Serena, can I brush Fennekin's fur?" Bonnie asked, "I asked Kenny if I could brush the fur of his Purrloin or Skitty or Meowstic, but he told me no."

"They're still on edge because of how you had tired handling them that one time," Kenny called out from where he was grooming his cats one at a time, with Jibanyan the shiny Skitty wearing a look of relaxed comfort, even sticking a bit of his tongue out in a 'blep' manner, as Kenny brushed his back.

Smiling gently, Serena said, "Yes Bonnie, I'll let you brush Fennekin. But I will be supervising the whole time." Bonnie giggled cutely as she was handed the brush and proceeded to gently brush Fennekin. As Bonnie was brushing Serena's Fennekin, the heroes all perked up when they heard the familiar voice of Shauna cry out, "Oh my goodness, you have adorable cat Pokémon!" The heroes then saw Shauna run over to them, only to scoop up Lin and Hovernyan into a hug as she spun around, making both Lin and Hovernyan freak out.

So much so, that Hovernyan was able to break Shauna's hold on him and Lin, allowing Lin to scamper over to and hide behind Kenny, before Hovernyan pulled his right paw-fist back and threw a perfected Power-Up Punch into Shauna's face, sending her flying into a tree that she smacked into, fell away from, and stumbled around out of dizziness before falling over. Pointing at the downed Shauna, Kenny scolded, "And that's what you get for making my Pokémon freak out, Shauna!" Lin, as she hid behind Kenny's legs, peeked out and hissed at where Shauna laid on the ground.

...

"Sorry if I got carried away," Shauna said, "But Kenny's Pokémon are simply adorable. I couldn't resist scooping them up and cuddling them."

"So what brings you to the area of Lagoon Town, Shauna?" Ash asked.

Perking up a bit, Shauna said to the heroes, "Didn't you hear? Aria the Kalos Queen is going to be making an exhibition appearance."

"A member of Kalos's royal family is going to be making an appearance?" Kenny asked, sounding surprised.

Gently shaking her head, Serena said, "Kenny, when Shauna says that Aria is the Kalos Queen, she's talking about how Aria is the top Pokémon Performer in Kalos." To Shauna, Serena said, "So where's the exhibition appearance going to be?"

"At a performance theater in Lagoon Town," Shauna said, "I can take you all there if you'd like." Given how excited Serena was to go see Aria perform live, the heroes deicded to take Shauna up on her offer, although they first recalled all of their Pokémon.

As the group made their way into Lagoon Town, Kenny said to Bonnie, "Stuff like what Shauna did with Lin and Hovernyan are NOT how one handles Pokémon. Let what you saw Hovernyan do to Shauna as a result be a lesson to you."

Later, the heroes and Shauna are in the theater to watch Aria's exhibition performance. While they're sitting in there, they heard a familiar female voice call out to them, "Oh! You're the heroes who helped fight off Team Scorn from Ambrette Town!" The group turned around and were surprised to meet Ochaco, the girl who studies fossil Pokémon.

"Oh, you're Ochaco," Clemont said, "What brings you here?"

"I'm here to watch the exhibition performance Aria's gonna do," Ochaco explained, "I heard that she's a really popular Pokémon Performer."

"Well you've come to the right place," Shauna said, "Now everyone be quiet. The show's about to start."

All eyes then turned to the stage, where the host, a person named Monsieur Pierre, came up to introduce Aria the Kalos Queen. However, a Braixen appeared first and, after performing a graceful and amazing routine, presented Aria with a display of Fire Spin. The two together then preformed an awesome display of the kind of showing one could expect to see at a Pokémon Showcase.

After Aria and her Braixen were done, the audience cheered as Aria and Briaxen took their leave before another performance, done by a girl named Kayleigh who had a Furfrou, started up. As Kayleigh performed with her Furfrou, in the audience Shauna whipsered to Serena, "In Pokémon Showcases, if one wins the theme performance round, they can go on to the freestyle performance round." Serena nodded in understanding as she got down all of what Shauna was saying, eager to learn all that she could about Pokémon Showcases.

As Serena was taking mental notes, everyone in the audience gave confused cries when suddenly, a random wild Pancham wandered onto the stage and began trying to perform. After crashing Kayleigh's performance with a spin, Pancham jumped onto a reflector, but it ended up breaking under the extra weight, and as such Pancham ended up falling. Some stagehands tried going after Pancham, but it pushed a loaded cart at them and used the distraction to try to escape. The operative word here is try, because as Pancham tried escaping, its route of escape was cut off when a Mightyena and a Furfrou, both of them shiny to the amazement of the heroes when they saw it, jumped in front of Pancham to cut off its escape route.

As the two shiny canine Pokémon barked and snarled at the intruder Pancham with the clear intent to help the humans capture the intruder, Pancham took some purses from women sitting in the audience nearby and threw them at Mightyena and Furfrou, smacking both in the face and was then able to escape after that. After the rogue Pancham escaped, the audience cleared out due to the violent interruption of Kayleigh's performance. The heroes, with Shauna and Ochaco following them, went down to check on the shiny Mightyena and shiny Furfrou, only to be met up by Ash's former traveling companion May again. To the further surprise of the group especially Shauna, Aria was following along behind May.

"May, what are you doing here?" Ash asked.

"I'm here to help Aria with her exhibition performance," May explained, "As well as learn what I need to compete in the Pokémon Showcases here in Kalos. Although they are similar to the Pokémon contests I've competed in before, there's a few differences that I need to be aware of."

"You... may want to move this conversation somewhere else," Aria said, "There's still the issue with security due to that random wild Pancham breaking in." Everyone nodded in agreement, and while Aria went to check some security measures, everyone else proceeded to follow May, although May had to use some Poké Puffs to bribe Mightyena and Furfrou to follow her.

...

"I get the feeling that May is going to be the person to beat in the Pokémon Showcase scene," Shauna said, "Given that she has two shiny Pokémon."

"Actually, both Mightyena and Furfrou belong to my younger brother Max," May admitted, "Granted, I would absolutely love to use them given how much of an edge they'll give me because simply being shiny Pokémon makes them very stand out and appealing to the audiences in Kalos who watch the Pokémon Showcases." Wincing a bit out of embarrassment, May said, "But I have a lot of trouble getting them to listen to me."

Dawn nodded in understanding. "Yes, I saw you had to bribe them with Poké Puffs just to get them to follow you."

Nodding in agreement, May went on, "I think that I'm going to have to get Max to make them more compliant. They both listen to him no problem."

"Wouldn't it be better to use your own Pokémon rather than borrow ones from your brother?" Kenny asked.

"I actually am going to use my own Pokémon," May said, "The reason why I'm trying to work with Max's Mightyena and Furfrou is because I'm planning on having them ready by the time the Master Class Pokémon Showcase rolls around. I'm confident in my ability to win all the Rookie Class Showcases I need to earn the Princess Keys that I'll need to qualify for the Master Class Showcase."

Dawn nodded in understanding once again. "So you're basically wanting to save Mightyena and Furfrou as secret weapons for the Master Class. Fair enough." Holding a hand to her chin, Dawn with a look of consideration on her face went on, "There's still the issue of that random wild Pancham who broke in and crashed Kayleigh's show."

Bonnie giggled in amusement. "I think it only wanted to perform on stage, like Aria and Kayleigh." As Bonnie talked, Dedenne who was sitting on her lap gave a cry of agreement. Hearing Dedenne cry out, Max's Mightyena got up and walked over to where Bonnie was sitting, sniffing at Dedenne who froze as if nervous. However, all that the shiny Mightyena did was lick Dedenne while wagging his tail.

"Mightyena, back away from Bonnie," May scolded, only to get absolutely no response from her brother's Pokémon. Sighing, May held up a Poké Puff and said, "Look Mightyena, it's a Poké Puff." Hearing that there was food, Mightyena immediately broke away from licking Dedenne and walked over to receive the treat from May. "See what I mean?" May said, "I have to bribe Mightyena to listen to me. Same applies to Furfrou."

"I don't think Mightyena had any ill intent," Clemont said, "He was only being friendly." True to form, Dedenne who was now a lot more relaxed towards Mightyena hopped off of Bonnie's lap and scampered over to Mightyena and held a paw out in a gesture of friendship. Mightyena lifted his front right paw and gently nudged it up against Dedenne's offered paw.

Looking a bit unsure, May said, "I'm still trying to figure out how to get Mightyena and Furfrou to listen to me by the time the Master Class Showcase rolls around."

"Maybe Max like you said ought to work with you to get his Pokémon used to the idea of listening to you," Ash suggested.

May nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I'm totally going to have to do that. But there's still the issue of that Pancham wandering around and-"

Serena forcefully stood up, catching everyone's attention. "I shall go deal with Pancham!" Serena declared, "And by deal with it, I mean I intend to capture it!"

"You're planning to capture Pancham?" Trip asked.

Serena nodded once in the affirmative. "I can tell it only wants to perform on stage, to wow and dazzle an audience," Serena said, "Pancham's got the right attitude for the Pokémon Showcase scene, it just needs guidance!" Gesturing to herself, Serena went on, "And I shall be the one to provide it!"

"Well alright, Serena!" Ash said, "That's the spirit!" Serena blushed a bit from the praise she got from Ash and, after the matter was settled, the heroes and Shauna left to go find the performing Pancham, leaving May who had to watch Mightyena and Furfrou until Max came around to collect them; Max according to May was managing her stuff she brought to help her with Pokémon Showcases, as well as feeding both her and his Pokémon.

After saying good-bye to May again, the heroes after Shauna took off as well went out to try to find the performing Pancham so that Serena can capture it. "So you have decided that you want to be a Pokémon Performer," Kenny said to Serena.

Nodding in the affirmative, Serena said, "Yes, and I'll be catching Pancham to help with that-"

"Cham!" the cry of a Pancham sounded out, cutting Serena off and making the heroes turn and see the performing Pancham come running up to them, stopping every so often to do some spins as if it were trying to perform on stage. Serena moved to send out Fennekin to battle Pancham, but the Pancham jumped up, took both Ash's hat and Clemont's glasses, and ran off with its stolen plunder.

"Hey! Pancham stole my hat!" Ash cried in complaint.

"And my glasses!" Clemont said, "I need those to see, darn it!"

"After the performing thieving Pancham!" Kenny cried out as he led the rest of the heroes in pursuit of the Pancham.

...

As the heroes chased after Pancham, they soon stopped when they heard the sound of some fighting down one of the forks in the road they were on. Pointing down the appropriate fork in the road, Kenny said, "There's a disturbance down that way."

"Let's go see!" Bonnie said, "It may lead us to Pancham!" The heroes ended up going down the fork in the road they heard the disturbance down, and sure enough they found Pancham, wearing Ash's hat with Clemont's glasses worn along the hat on the bill. However, the performing thieving Pancham was in the middle of a battle against a second wild Pancham, this one clearly angry as it snarled and cried out in anger.

"Hey, now there's two of them," Ash said, "But the second one doesn't look so friendly." Seeing that the heroes had caught up, the performing thieving Pancham pointed at them and cried out something in Pokémon-talk, prompting the second Pancham to turn on them and charge right for them, giving the performing thieving Pancham an opening to escape.

"I'm going after that Pancham who's getting away with Ash's hat and Clemont's glasses!" Serena said, but the angry Pancham was closing in on her.

"Go Hovernyan!" Kenny said as he sent out his named male Meowstic, still wearing his red scarf-cape, "Keep that angry Pancham occupied! Use Power-Up Punch!" Hovernyan pulled his right paw-fist back and, as it glowed with energy, he threw the punch right at the angry Pancham, knocking it back away from Serena. Seeing that it now had an opponent to tango with, the angry Pancham focused exclusively on Hovernyan, allowing Serena to continue going after the performing thieving Pancham. "Alright, Hovernyan," Kenny said, "Let show this Pancham how cringe does business! Hit 'em with some moxie!"

...

Serena eventually followed Pancham to a small cave and, going inside, saw that Pancham had gathered a trove of items that it clearly had gathered with the intent to use them in performances like Pokémon Showcases. Serena also saw Pancham, still wearing Ash's hat on which were Clemont's glasses, and it was laying down, breathing hard out of exhaustion as it was rubbing its stomach on which there was a noticable scuff mark. "Hey Pancham," Serena said, and when she spoke up the Pancham got up to face her, but winced out of pain as it held its paws to its scuff mark on its stomach.

"...You got hurt fighting that other Pancham, huh?" Serena said in a gentle, understanding tone. Serena then walked over, knelt down, and took something out of her bag, revealing it to be a Potion. She proceded to apply the medicinal item to Pancham's injury, and right away Pancham felt the pain ease away. Pancham then looked up at Serena with a look of wonder on its face, before giving a happy cry and cheer. Serena gently chuckled in amusement. "It's no problem, Pancham," Serena replied, "Although I am still going to be needing to get both Ash's hat and Clemont's glasses back from you."

Pancham held its paws to the hat and glasses, looking a bit unsure about giving up the items it had taken. Looking around the cave in which Pancham kept its plundered goods, Serena got an idea. Taking off the pair of sunglasses worn on her hat, Serena offered them to Pancham. "How about you take my sunglasses in return for giving back Ash's hat and Clemont's glasses?" Serena offered. Pancham, although a bit slow as if unsure, took off Ash's hat and Clemont's glasses and took Serena's sunglasses in return, allowing Serena to get back what all had been stolen from Ash and Clemont.

Wearing the sunglasses over its forehead, Pancham went over to a large reflective metal lamp, trying to see its reflection to see how it looked. Serena, realizing what Pancham was aiming at, said, "I have a mirror in my bag, hold on." Serena took out a (fairly big) compact mirror and opened it to show Pancham, allowing it to see how it looked. Pancham turned its head slightly as it looked at its reflection, seeing how the sunglasses looked on it, and was apparently satisfied. Pancham then gave yet another happy cry as it leapt up into Serena's arm, surprising her and promoting her to catch it so it wouldn't fall.

Serena gave a gentle smile. "Yes, you're welcome. Anyway, we need to go back to see how my friends are doing with that angry Pancham, also so I can return Ash's hat and Clemont's glasses to them." Serena, carrying Pancham in her arms as she held Ash's hat and Celmont's glasses with one of her hands, got out of Pancham's little cave and made her way back down the road to meet back up with the rest of the group, hoping that they were getting along alright in dealing with the angry Pancham. Kenny was battling it, so Serena hoped for Kenny's sake that he and his Meowstic would be alright.

...

By the time Serena met back up with the heroes, they were surprised to find she was now carrying the performing thieving Pancham. As she handed back Ash's hat and Clemont's glasses, Serena asked, "Where did that angry Pancham go?"

Jerking a thumb at Kenny, Trip explained, "Kenny actually caught it after Hovernyan performed a combo where he punched the Pancham away with Power-Up Punch before blasting it with Psychic."

"And we also discovered that Panda was angry because someone had stolen food from him," Kenny said, "Panda being the name I gave my new Pancham. Panda calmed down after I caught him and assured him he wouldn't have to worry about food."

Serena looked to the Pancham she was carrying. "You didn't steal food from the other Pancham, did you?" The Pancham gave a nervous, embarrassed chuckle as everyone laughed off what happened. After setting Pancham down, Serena ended up capturing it, as it was willing agreeing to go with her. Now Serena had two Pokémon to help her with her Pokémon Showcase career she was intending to pursue. After Serena stated a desire to become a better Pokémon Performer than Aria, the heroes took off on the road to further adventure.

As the heroes continued their journey, Bonnie cried out, "Oh not again!"

"What," Kenny asked, "What's wrong?"

"I forgot to ask May if she'd like to marry Clemont!" Bonnie exclaimed, making the rest of the group give out amused chuckles, aside from Clemont who merely sighed in mild exasperation over Bonnie trying yet again to find him a bride.

Later, as the heroes continued their journey, they stopped off at a place that Clemont said had a lot of history for him. "It's where I invented my Clemontic Shower device," Clemont explained.

"Clemontic Shower device?" Kenny said, "It's not another invention of yours that Godzilla is gonna have to toss up into the air so it can explode safely away from the rest of us, is it?"

"Actually, the Clemontic Shower device worked like a charm," Clemont said, "I made it back when I studied here. It's an electric shower designed to help electric type Pokémon absorb the electricity they need. I made it as part of my graduation project, and it received praise all over town. A wild Shinx that I had befriended helped me with it, even serving as the inspiration when I found him injured due to lack of electricity."

"And it's still helping today," a female voice called out, making the heroes turn and see a lady dressed as a scientist come walking up to them.

"Oh, Eclairisse," Clemont said, "How are you-"

"-Down for the idea of marrying my big brother here?" Bonnie asked, interrupting Clemont and forcing him to pull Bonnie away.

Bowing his head to the now identified Eclairisse, Clemont said, "Ma'am, I am SO sorry about my little sister just now!"

Chuckling a bit in understanding, Eclairisse said, "It's no problem. I'm just guessing your little sister doesn't know I was your teacher when you were a student at the academy."

"I think they have a point, Bonnie," Kenny said to the younger girl, "Besides, your brother doesn't strike me as being the kind of person who'd be hot for his teacher."

To the group, Eclairisse said, "So what brings all of you by here?"

"We were actually crossing our way through on the way to Coumarine City," Serena explained, "Ash, Dawn, Kenny, and Trip all intend to challenge the gym over there."

Nodding once in understanding, Eclairisse replied, "Fair enough. Anyway, while you guys are here, wouldn't you be interested in a tour of the academy that Clemont attended in his youth?"

"Sounds like a plan," Kenny replied as he and the others proceeded to go with Eclairisse to check out the academy that Clemont attended in his youth. However, what the heroes didn't know was that a random wild Luxio was watching them.

At the academy, as the heroes toured around with Eclairisse, Eclairisse said, "Ah yes, the Clemontic Shower device. It actually won Clemont a lot of acclaim, and he was even taken to a party by the Mayor at the time to celebrate how breakout the Clemontic Shower device was."

"The... Mayor kind of forced going to the party on me," Clemont said, "And right before I was able to ask the Shinx who helped me if I could catch it and make it my partner. I even made a cake for Shinx." Sighing, Clemont said, "By the time I got back, Shinx was gone. It must of assumed that I snubbed it and it ran off."

"Wow, that's pretty sad," Trip said, "I mean, I myself own a Luxray who I caught as a Shinx, so I understand how you feel." Dawn also nodded in understanding, as she herself also owns a Luxray she had since it was a Shinx; Luna was actually the third Pokémon Dawn ever got, following getting Chi-Chi as her starter and catching Cyrus.

After Dawn and Trip were done reminiscing, the group all heard a creaking sound coming in from out of nowhere. The creaking went on for a bit longer, and then Bonnie was suddenly shoved away with a forceful tackle as she heard something fall down and crash into the floor, landing on the floor with a Luxio standing over her. The group were all surprised by Luxio shoving Bonnie away, up until Kenny pointed out a thick light-up sign having crashed into the floor where Bonnie was previously standing up until Luxio shoved her out of the way.

"That random Luxio saved Bonnie from getting hit by that sign!" Ash said.

Going over to check the smashed remains of the sign, Dawn noticed that the chains that were attached to it so it could hang were rather rusted, with a few broken links in both chain lengths. "The chains are rusted," Dawn said, "That probably explains why the sign fell down." Turning to look up at Eclairisse, Dawn said, "If there are other signs like this one here at the academy that hang from chains, make sure to check all of them, and replace any chains that are rusty like the ones on this sign that had nearly smashed into Clemont's little sister."

Nodding once in the affirmative, Eclairisse said, "R-Right." It was clear that the teacher was rattled by how close of a call the group had just now; were it not for that random wild Luxio leaping in to shove Bonnie out of the way, she could have gotten seriously hurt by that falling sign.

Speaking of, Bonnie petted the Luxio on the side of its face, thanking it for saving her. Luxio licked Bonnie's face once before getting up and turning to face Clemont. The Luxio cried out at Clemont in a knowing tone, giving him a serious look. Looking at the Luxio, Clemont was wondering what was going through the Luxio's head, up until it suddenly dawned on Clemont. "...Are you the Shinx I had befriended here when I was a student?" Clemont asked, drawing an affirmative cry out of the Luxio as it was gently swishing its tail around.

"Well how about that, Clemont," Ash said, "Your Shinx friend from when you were a student is now a Luxio who saved your little sister from getting hurt!"

Clemont nodded in agreement before turning back to face Luxio. "Listen Luxio, I owe you an apology," Clemont said, "I never meant to snub you. I was dragged away to a party to celebrate the device you helped me with before I could ask if I could catch you and make you my partner. I had even made you a cake to celebrate how you and I had made the-" Clemont was cut off when the Luxio gave an excited cry and ran up to him, leaping up into his chest and knocking him over. Luxio gave a happy cry as it sniffed Clemont all over, occasionally licking at his hands.

Dawn gave an amused smirk. "...I think Luxio here is willing to forgive you, Clemont. Especially if you give it the cake you had mentioned." Luxio perked up again when it heard Dawn say the word 'cake'.

"Well that particular cake is long gone," Clemont said, "But I can certainly get a new cake for Luxio." That was apparently all that Luxio needed to hear as it cuddled up against Clemont, giving happy cries as it reunited with its old friend.

Later, Clemont got a cake big enough for Luxio to share with Celmont's other one hand Pokémon, Bunnelby and Chespin. After the Pokémon had their fill of cake, Luxio agreed to allow Clemont to capture it. Now that two friends from long ago were reunited at long last, the heroes were emboldened to continue with their journey over to Coumarine City. Clemont's Chespin was looking around for any leftover cake, but Clemont told Chespin that it, Bunnelby, and Luxio had eaten all of the cake already. The disappointed look on Clemont's Chespin's face drew some laughs out of the heroes.

END, CHAPTER ONE-HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN

Author's notes;

This chapter skims the episode with the two brother and their Meowstics and the Wigglytuff who helped to calm down a Salamence in order to cover the adaption of the events where Serena catches her Pancham. It also sees Kenny catching his own Pancham, and the heroes reunite with May, who plans to make her mark in the Pokémon Showcase scene, even planning on utilizing Max's shiny Mightyena and (newly caught) shiny Furfrou if she can get them to listen to her in time for the Master Class Showcase; May plans to use her own Pokémon until then.

After the Panchams are caught, the heroes go on to where Clemont attended an academy, and he reunites with his old Shinx friend who is now a Luxio, after said Luxio saves Bonnie from a falling sign. Clemont is able to capture Luxio, and after Eclairisse is advised by Dawn to check all the signs hanging in the academy to make sure that everything is up to code, the heroes move on to continue with their journey to Coumarine City. Stay tuned, because the next chapter will see the heroes continue on the path of their journey through the Kalos region. Later.
