Chapter One-hundred and eighty-one: Frogadier Force

Inside of a cave somewhere, a guy dressed up in an elaborate ninja armor outfit was talking to The Ninja Corp. "So yeah," the fancy ninja armor guy said, "We're going to be invading the Ninja Village."

"We of The Ninja Corp," began the leader of The Ninja Corp, "Swear allegiance to you, Kagemoto. However, we have some concerns with how you seem so entirely sure that nothing could possibly challenge your attempts."

"Is that so, Heidayu?" the now identified Kagemoto said to the now identified Heidayu, "There's no need to worry. Seriously." With an amused smirk, Kagemoto said, "Name one person who can stop us."

...

"Good work, Frogadier!"

Elsewhere, the heroes had stopped to rest and get some training in. Ash, as per usual, was working with his Frogadier. As for Dawn, she had taken to supervising the training of her newly caught Darkrai, who she had named Tobias. Tobias had, to Dawn's amusement, come knowing Dark Pulse. And in the past few days since she had caught Tobias, Dawn had the named Darkrai learn Psychic, Ice Beam, and Sludge Bomb, all three of which Tobias had picked up and mastered quickly. Dawn liked that her mythical Pokémon was a fast learner.

As Ash and Dawn were going over the Pokémon's training, Frogadier took some frubbles and threw them to intercept the arrival of someone. "Whoa whoa whoa!" Sanpei said as he and his Greninja came walking in from the direction Frogadier threw frubbles in, "No need to attack! I was approaching your group casually like a non-ninja normal person would! I learned my lesson the first time!" Putting his hands on his hips, Sanpei said, "Although I'll admit that your ability to detect the presence of other people is finely honed."

"Sanpei!" Ash said, getting everyone else to turn to face him, "What brings you by here?"

"I was actually on my way home to the Ninja Village to take part in a village festival tomorrow," Sanpei explained, "If you guys want, you can come along."

"Ooh, I wanna go!" Bonnie said, "I can even wear my ninja outfit that I still have!"

"Speaking of ninja outfits," Kenny said, "I still have the ninja outfits that Dawn, Trip, and I had that one time!"

At the mention of the 'ninja outfits' Kenny had, Sanpei gave him a curious look. "...Those don't look like actual ninja outfits."

Later, Sanpei led the heroes into a cave that seemingly ended in a dead end. However, Sanpei knocked on a stone at the end of the cave. Suddenly, a man's voice called out, "Mountain."

"River," Sanpei said back. A stone door then slid away, revealing a path. The group then entered, with two men greeting Sanpei. After walking along the path, the heroes and Sanpei arrived in a village surrounded on all sides by sheer cliffs. "This, everyone," Sanpei said, "Is the Ninja Village."

"Where's the Hokage?" Kenny asked, only to be smacked in the back of the head by Trip. By this point, the reborn trainers got back into their 'ninja' outfits, and Bonnie was in hers. Everyone else was still dressed normally.

As the heroes and Sanpei were greeted by everyone, they were met up by Sanpei's brothers, Ippei and Nihei. "I see you have evolved your Frogadier into Greninja," Ippei remarked, "Not bad, Sanpei."

Looking to the heroes, Nihei said, "And you all must be the heroic trainers I heard had worked with Sanpei on multiple occasions in the past." Seeing that Ash and Dawn had Frogadier and Tobias out respectively, Nihei went on, "And I see that one of you has a Frogadier like Sanpei before his evolved. I... wasn't quite expecting one of you to bring in a Darkrai of all things, though."

"The fact that such a Pokémon is behaving itself without issue is a testiment to the skills of the trainer who commands it," a male voice called out, making the heroes and the ninja brothers turn to see an old man and a young adult woman ninja come up to greet them. Gesturing to himself, the old man said, "My name is Hanzo, and I'm the leader of the Ninja Village."

Nodding once, the young adult woman ninja said, "And I'm Shinobu. A pleasure to meet all of you."

Pointing at Hanzo, Kenny said, "So you're the Hokage." Once more, Trip smacked Kenny on the back of the head.

Looking to Ash and Dawn, Hanzo said to Ash, "You being here with a Frogadier... for reasons that escape me, I feel as if your being here is predestined."

"What do you mean?" Ash asked.

Gesturing for the heroes and Sanpei to follow him, Hanzo said, "Come. We have much to discuss." Curious, the group nonetheless followed Hanzo elsewhere into the village.

...

Eventually, Hanzo led the group to a monument that depicted the image of a curious looking Greninja. "Long ago," Hanzo began, "Ninja Village was a rather chaotic hodgepodge of fighting and violence. The reason for the fighting has long since been lost to time, but the Pokémon of the village fought in defense of it, while they were led by a Greninja."

Gesturing to himself, Sanpei said, "My brother Ippei and I both started off with Froakies out of admiration of the heroic Greninja."

Looking at the picture of the Greninja, Bonnie said, "It looks... different... from other Greninja that I've seen."

"This is most curious," Kenny said, "A Greninja that looks different from others of the same species. We must be cautious."

Ash and his Frogadier looked on at the monument depicting the odd looking heroic Greninja, both of them wondering just what it could mean exactly. However, as the both of them were looking on at the monument, an alarm suddenly sounded out, alerting everyone. "Are we under attack?!" Kenny exclaimed.

"Yes, that is the attack alarm," Sanpei said in a worried tone, "We need to get out into the village to see what's going on!"

"Quickly now!" Hanzo said as he led everyone else out of where the Greninja monument was located so that they could head out into the village proper and see what all of the ruckus was about.

...

After everyone got into the village, they saw that hostile ninjas were attacking, fighting the peaceful ninjas who lived in Ninja Village as non-combative villagers all fled in terror. There were also loads of various Pokémon being used by all of the ninjas, with the attacking ninjas using a fleet of Skarmory. "Tobias!" Dawn called out as she sent her named Darkrai in to help deal with the invading forces, "Shoot down as many Skarmory as possible with Dark Pulse!" Tobias conjured and its Dark Pulse attack, waving it around and smacking many of the Skarmory with it, knocking many of them down out of the air.

"Dawn's got the right idea," Ash said, "We need to fight back!" The other heroes, aside from Serena and Bonnie who both hung back, went in to help fight off the enemy ninja. Sanpei even spotted Kagemoto who he identified to the others, and Ash followed Sanpei in going after Kagemoto. However, they were both intercepted by a man who Sanpei identified as Heidayu, who sent a Bisharp out to confront Ash and Sanpei.

As Ash and Sanpei focused on Heidayu, Kenny and Trip helped Dawn with the Skarmory fleet while Clemont helped fight off enemy ground forces. Dawn's Darkrai was getting in a fair amount of battle experience; unlike with what Tobias's namesake had done, Dawn makes sure to properly train ALL of her Pokémon, even the ones who seem powerful enough to not need it. But all training needs to start with a good base, and for the named Darkrai, that would be battle experience.

Meanwhile, Ash and Sanpei were battling against Heidayu and his Bisharp. Sanpei was using his Greninja and Ash was using Frogadier and Charizard who he had sent out. Bisharp was able to dodge attacks from all three Pokémon, but it did look a bit rattled after barely dodging a Flamethrower from Ash's Charizard. Bisharp then tried to go on the offensive with Night Slash, but Ash called out, "Frogadier! Use your frubbles to pin Bisharp by its feet!" Frogadier took some of its frubbles and threw them at the feet of Bisharp, catching it up and keeping it from being able to move.

Seeing that his Bisharp was pinned, Heidayu called out, "Oh, that's real low and dirty of you!"

"Says the guy helping with attacking the Ninja Village!" Ash called back, "What, you and your allies are allowed to fight dirty against us, but if we try the same against you then it's wrong? How hypocritical can you be?"

Heidayu scowled in bitter annoyance and was about to fire back, but he was cut off when Saizo showed up with his Barbaracle. "You, Kagemoto, and the others will not get away with this, Heidayu!" Saizo scowled.

Scoffing and seeing that he was outnumbered, Heidayu recalled his Bisharp and used a Skarmory from the fleet to escape. "I should have bought enough time for Kagemoto anyway!" Heidayu called down to the heroic trainers, "There's no stopping us no-"

"Charizard, use Flamethrower on that Skarmory!" Ash called out.

Charizard fired a Flamethrower at the Skarmory that Heidayu was using to escape, hitting the Skarmory and knocking both it and Heidayu down, forcing Heidayu to tumble when he hit the ground. Heidayu scowled bitterly as he saw that Ash and the others won't let him get away so easily. Taking out a whistle, Heidayu blew into it, which had the result of calling more of Heidayu's ninja followers to help him out. "Let's even the odds," Heidayu said as he and his summoned men outnumbered Saizo, Ash, and Sanpei four to one, "Shall we?"

Scoffing sarcastically, Ash replied in a likewise tone, "Yeah right, like you and your men here holding a blatant numbers advantage against me, Sanpei, and Saizo is 'evening the odds'. The odds are blatantly skewed in your favor!"

"That's what makes it fair!" Heidayu proclaimed, "Because it's only fair if the side me and Kagemoto are on has the clear advantage and is guaranteed to win!"

...

Over on Otori Mountain, Kagemoto had a bound and captured Hanzo. "Take the mask off," Hanzo scowled, "I know it's you, Kagemoto." Taking off the mask, Kagemoto looked down at where Hanzo sat.

Kagemoto gave Hanzo an amused smirk. "...What gave it away?"

"The way the rope keeping me bound is tied," Hanzo remarked, "It's your handiwork." Looking up at Kagemoto, Hanzo asked, "What is it that you aim to do? Steal the Chief's Emblem from me?"

"I do want it, but I won't steal it," Kagemoto said, giving a gentle shake of his head, "You'll give it to me during the festival tomorrow while proclaiming me as the next village chief."

Hanzo looked up at Kagemoto, a conflicted look on his face. "...You were once of Ninja Village, and slated to be the next village chief. But I saw in you a thirst for power, so I had to deny you."

"Wanting power just to have it is wrong!" a male voice called out, making Hanzo and Kagemoto both turn to see that Ippei had just shown up. "There is a sense of responsibility that comes with having power," Ippei said to Kagemoto, "Having power without being responsible with it will never work out in the long run!"

"Silence!" Kagemoto snapped, "You speak as if one who has power isn't allowed to enjoy having it! What's the point of having power if one can't enjoy having it?" Sending out a Weavile to do battle, Kagemoto said, "Let us see who is more worthy of being the next chief of Ninja Village with a Pokémon battle!"

Sending out his Greninja, Ippei said, "That isn't something that can be settled with just a Pokémon battle. There's more to being the village chief than being strong, more to it than having power."

Kagemoto offered an amused smirk, gestured to the battle before him. "And yet you accepted my challenge, thus accepting my wager."

"One, I by no means have accepted your wager," Ippei replied, "And two, the reason why I'm battling you anyway is because you and your forces are a threat to Ninja Village! Of course I have to battle you! What kind of prospective village chief would I be if I didn't fight to defend both Ninja Village and its people?"

Kagemoto gave a bemused scoff. "I'll teach you that power and strength is all one needs to lead!" Kagemoto gestured for his Weavile to go on the offensive, and the battle between Kagemoto and Ippei began.

...

Meanwhile, Ash, Sanpei, and Saizo were having some difficulty in dealing with Heidayu and his men. Heidayu's Bisharp actually went down quickly because when it was sent back out, Ash's Frogadier pinned it again with its frubbles before Charizard blasted it with Flamethrower. An enemy ninja's Roselia tried hitting Barbaracle with Energy Ball, but Ash's Frogadier leapt in and destroyed the attack with Cut. "Good job on saving Saizo's Barbaracle, Frogadier!" Ash said, giving his Pokémon a thumbs up for the effort.

Frogadier cried out in thanks, then turned to face the enemy Pokémon and cry out challengingly at them. Suddenly, Frogadier began evolving; its form glowed white as it shifted in both size and shape. The glowing soon faded after the shifting and growing was finished. Thusly, Ash and the others saw that Frogadier had evolved into its final form of Greninja. "Your Frogadier has just evolved into Greninja!" Sanpei called out.

"Alright!" Ashcalled out, "Let's do this, Greninja!"

"Ninja!" Greninja cried out as it leapt into the air and used Water Shuriken, taking out the enemy Roselia. After that, Ash and the others watching were all amazed as a torrent of water formed around Ash's Greninja as it seemingly transformed. The torrent hid the transformed stated of Greninja, but even so Greninja rushed around and took out the remaining enemy Pokémon. After all of the enemy ninjas were defeated, Greninja reverted back to its base form before the water cloaking it went away, meaning Ash never got a good look at the form.

Heidayu and his defeated men tried to flee, but some ninja from the Ninja Village, backed up by Kenny, cut them off from their escape and caught them. With the enemies secured, Ash, Sanpei, and Saizo turned their attention to where Kagemoto had Hanzo at. They did perk up when Kenny said, "Whoa, Ash! Did your Frogadier evolve into Greninja?"

Ash let out a bit of a chuckle. "Heh, yeah. And there's actually something interesting."

...

Meanwhile, the battle between Ippei's Greninja and Kagemoto's Weavile raged on. "...Weavile," Hanzo remarked quietly to himself, too soft for Ippei and Kagemoto who were battling to hear, "It is indeed strong. Stronger than even Ippei's Greninja. But Weavile lacks something."

Ippei's Greninja used Double Team, but Kagemoto's Weavile got rid of the doppelgangers with Giga Impact. After Weavile got back down from attacking, it and Kagemoto were distracted when a Dark Pulse hit the ground near Weavile's left. Turning to see, Kagemoto and his Weavile saw Dawn and her named Darkrai come running on in. Kagemoto growled in frustration that he now clearly has an opponent to deal with that has a mythical Pokémon, something that was well above Weavile's weight class. "Even as strong as your Pokémon is, little girl," Kagemoto scowled at Dawn, "It's power don't mean squat if its attacks miss!"

"You speak as if I was having Tobias actually aim at Weavile," Dawn called back, "Rather than aim at the ground near Weavile to distract it!"

Kagemoto's eyes widened with realization as he turned his attention back to the battle, just in time to see Ippei's Greninja rush his distracted Weavile and blitz it hard with Water Shuriken, thus knocking Weavile out. "I can't believe it!" Kagemoto exclaimed, "Defeated because I was distracted!"

"Your Weavile is strong, do not doubt that," Hazo spoke up, getting everyone else to turn to see him, "But that power can only do so much while it's in your hands while you lack one key thing. A key thing that Ippei, as well as the Darkrai girl, have in spades."

Letting out an incredulous huff, Kagemoto said, "So enlighten me, oh great Hanzo. What is the thing that I lack?"

"Devotion to helping to foster the dreams of the people," Hanzo said, "Not just those of Ninja Village, but for those all over the world. There's also fostering the dreams of Pokémon all over the world as well." Looking right at Kagemoto, Hanzo said, "Even you can only do so much before you hit a wall if you continue to act as you are at the moment, acting without care or considerations for the hopes and dreams of others, human and Pokémon alike."

The others there all nodded in agreement; Ippei and his Greninja, as well as Dawn and her named Darkrai. Seeing Tobias nod in agreement concerning the fostering of the dreams of others, Dawn wasn't quite so sure what to make of Darkrai, said to cause bad dreams, nodding in agreement with trying to foster the dreams of others. It was just one of those things that one normally wouldn't expect out of the physical avatar of nightmares. Regardless, the conflict against Kagemoto seems to have been settled, allowing for the fighting to be called to an end.

Later, the Ninja Village festival went down, during which Hanzo officially retired from his position as village chief and gave the job to Ippei, passing onto him the Chief's Emblem. During the festival, Ash told the rest of the heroes about not only his Frogadier evolving into Greninja, but how Greninja even transformed although a cloak of water prevented Ash from getting a good look at Greninja's transformed state before it reverted back. The rest of the heroes, with the reborn trainers and Bonnie still in their respective ninja outfits (the ones on the reborn trainers were debatable), listened on while Kenny ate a bowl of ramen he got from somewhere.

Trip, a look of consideration on his face, gave his full attention to Ash. "It sounds like we'll have to crack into this as soon as we can. Maybe having Greninja spar with our Pokémon who can Mega Evolve might help with fostering its training to get down using its transformation, which sounds like a variant of Mega Evolution."

"I'd like the help, thanks," Ash replied, appreciative that he had friends willing to help him.

Trip nodded in response. "If you want, we can begin as soon as our time here in Ninja Village draws to a close and we have to hit the road again. I'm certain that Veda will be more than glad to serve as a sparring partner for your Greninja to help it get down its transformation." Dawn could tell what Trip was getting at, and wondered if Trip had thought that far ahead when he got the Mega Stone for his named Abomasnow.

Apparently, Kagemoto and Heidayu both settled down and turned over a new leaf, acknowledging their mistakes. Vowing to do good now, they decided to travel the world in order to learn what it was that they were missing. Kagemoto told Ippei to take care of the village before leaving on his world wide sojourn with Heidayu, letting them all part ways on friendly enough terms.

...

The following day, the heroes themselves took off so that they could continue towards Terminus Cave on the way to Snowbelle City. After the heroes left Ninja Village, Sanpei gathered with his brothers, as well as Hanzo and Saizo, at the monument to the hero of Ninja Village. After Sanpei told the others what he saw, Nihei asked, "What do you you think this means?"

Ippei, with an amused smile, replied, "The hero from the past must have risen up to save us once again."

After some traveling, the heroes made it to Couriway Town, where another Pokémon Showcase was going to be held. Serena was determined to win, and was a lot more confident than a girl who failed to get a Princess Key three times in a row should be. The reason for Serena's surprising confidence and faith in her odds of winning was the fact that Ochaco was confirmed to not be entering the Couriway Town Pokémon Showcase. Ochaco, the girl who studied Pokémon revived from fossils, had been very ace in the Pokémon Showcase scene thanks to her generous usage of shiny Pokémon.

So much so that Ochaco won the first three Showcases she had entered in a row, netting her the three Princess Keys she needed to qualify for the Master Class Showcase when it's held. With Ochaco not entering because she already had what all she needed, Serena was both more confident in her odds of winning and all the more determined to win and finally get her first Princess Key. Clemont and Bonnie went to go watch Serena's attempt at the Couriway Town Pokémon Showcase, but Ash and the reborn trainers had to skip out on watching because Ash's Greninja's transformation power had to be addressed.

To help with Ash's Greninja's training to try and get a firm hold over its transformation power, Dawn, Kenny, and Trip had Mega Evolved Leni, Cell, and Veda respectively so that Ash's Greninja could spar with them. It wasn't actual battling as one Greninja, even one that's apparently special like Ash's Greninja, would be overwhelmed if it had to seriously fight three Mega Evolved Pokémon all at once. No, they were just simply doing a little bit of friendly sparring so as to help Greninja try to bring back out its special transformation.

"Greninja, Double Team!" Ash called out, having his Greninja use Double Team to conjure some doppelgangers.

"Cell, use Aerial Ace!" Kenny called out.

"Leni, use Aura Sphere!" Dawn commanded.

The named Mega Evolved shiny Scizor busted through all of the doppelgangers and was closing in on Greninja. "Use Cut to parry the attack!" Ash called out. Greninja conjured an energy blade it held like a dagger and used it to parry the striking slash of Cell's Aerial Ace, catching his Mega Evolved opponent. However, Greninja saw Leni's Aura Sphere come flying towards him, so he quickly moved Cell to use him as a human (Pokémon?) shield to block the attack, making Cell cry out in pain as he stumbled back from Greninja.

"Oh, now that was a low blow, Greninja," Kenny said to Ash's Greninja as Cell shook off the pain, "Using Cell as a shield to protect yourself."

"Hey Ash," Trip said, "Why don't you have Greninja spar with Veda here for a bit?"

Nodding once, Ash replied, "Fair enough." Ash then had Greninja move to focus on sparring with the named Mega Evolved Abomasnow.

Greninja leapt in and tried to strike at Veda, but Trip called out, "Veda, counter with Ice Punch!"

"Greninja, Double Team!" Ash commanded, prompting Greninja to conjure more doppelgangers again so as to avoid a hit from Veda's Ice Punch. A doppelganger was busted, allowing Greninja and the other doppelgangers to push Veda back with a barrage of Water Shuriken attacks. "Alright, Greninja!" Ash cheered, "We're getting the hang of this!"

"Ninja!" Greninja called out, and to the amazement of Ash and the heroes, the water torrent surrounded Greninja again as it was transformed but obscured from sight due to the water.

Trip smirked in sincere amusement. "Well alright, we're seeing some progress now!"

Ash and Greninja then cried out in unison, as if trying to resonate with one another. During this crying out, however, Ash with a sudden pained expression let out a gasp before falling to his knees and collapsing onto the ground. Greninja's transformation was undone before the water cloaking it vanished, and Greninja and the others all ran to where Ash fell. The Mega Evolution of the Pokémon that were Mega Evolved became undone, and Leni at Dawn's direction used Psychic to levitate the unconscious Ash to help carry him into the Pokémon Center.

...

When Ash came to, the first thing he saw was both Serena and Trip looking over him while sitting at his bedside. Getting up and sitting up in bed, Ash asked, "What happened?"

"The strain of trying to use your Greninja's Limit Break must have knocked you out," Kenny said over where he, Dawn, Clemont, and Bonnie all stood by the door leading into the bunk room of the Pokémon Center.

"My theory is that there's some sort of aura-like bond between you and Greninja," Dawn said, "A sort of wavelength, as it were. And both your wavelength and that of your Greninja's must be flowing in an aligned manner, or else carrying on unaligned for too long will make you black out from strain."

Turning to look at Clemont, Trip asked, "You're good with tech, Clemont. You think you can help invent something to figure out this wavelength thing?"

Clemont nodded in the affirmative. "Dawn's theory is sound. And the wavelength related invention you suggested would be doable. I'll need time for it, though."

Looking at Serena then to Clemont and Bonnie, Ash said in an apologetic tone, "I'm sorry if you guys rushed from the Showcase hall to see me after being told about what happened to me."

"Actually, Dawn, Kenny, and Trip didn't tell us about what happened until a few moments before they let us into this room," Bonnie said, "The Showcase had already ended, And Sere-"

"Let me tell Ash, Bonnie," Serena interrupted. Serena steadied herself by taking a calming breath. To Ash's surprise, Serena pulled out and held up a Princess Key. Serena was unable to hide her smile. "...I finally won a Showcase. Only two more to go."

"You won?" Ash said, "That's amazing, Serena!" Then, as if all of his vitality and vigor returned to him, Ash got out of bed with a leap as he cheered.

Clemont had an understanding look on his face. "Yeah, that was essentially me and Bonnie's reaction as well."

Dawn smiled and nodded once before saying, "Well Serena only needs two more Princess Keys before she can step into the Master Class Showcase." Turning to look at Ash, Dawn said, "As for training your Greninja, although it should still get in regular training, the training to master its transformation ought to carefully monitored until it can be done safely without risk of making you pass out from the strain."

"And lay back down," Trip half said half ordered, "Although it's good to see you get some vitality back, you did technically pass out earlier, so you ought to be taking it easy."

"Trip has a point, Ash," Serena said, a clear hint of concern in her tone and expression, "You ought to take it easy."

Gesturing to Trip and Serena, Kenny said to Ash, "Yes, listen to Nurse Serena and Nurse Trip and let them look after you. I can even borrow some outfits from Nurse Joy for them to wear while looking after you."

Seeing both Serena and Trip light up out of embarrassment, Dawn said, "I... don't think that would be necessary, Kenny."

Seeing a calm and neutral expression on Ash's face, Clemont said, "I'm surprised you aren't saying anything about Kenny suggesting that Trip wear a Nurse Joy outfit."

"Considering the times I've dressed in a manner girls normally do," Ash replied, "Seeing another boy dress up like that wouldn't really bother me."
