Chapter One-hundred and eighty-five: Contest of Champions

The reborn trainers and Ash were led over to the Sojourn City Pokémon Showcase hall by Iris, who had been revealed to have become the new Unova Champion after Ideku had been booted from the position due to the passing of a xenophobic law in Unovan legislature. The Showcase that was being held at the Sojourn City Showcase Hall, called the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase, was some manner of special event on Kalos's behalf to try and play friendly with the other regions in the hopes of strengthening inter-regional bonds so as to better unite the regions of the world against the looming threat of Team Scorn.

Over at the Showcase hall, Ash, Iris, and the reborn trainers met up with Clemont and Bonnie, who had left prior to get snacks; in reality Clemont way trying to drag Bonnie away before she spilled intel that she wasn't supposed to spill. "The Showcase won't be for a few hours," Clemont said, "They're getting the Showcase hall ready, as well as prep the VIP viewing area for the VIPs who will be watching the Showcase."

"Sounds like all the stops are being pulled out here," Dawn remarked.

"Oh, Dawn," Iris began, "Since we have time until the Showcase so the place is set up and the Performers are getting ready, you wanna go meet with the other region champions?"

Dawn nodded once, figuring that this encounter could be very interesting. "Sure thing," Dawn replied, following Iris as Ash, Kenny, Trip, Clemont, and Bonnie all followed behind them.

After a short while, Iris led the heroes (minus Serena who's getting ready) to a parlor that had a buffet set up in the one area. Inside, Dawn and the others saw the Champions of other regions; Lance who covered both Kanto and Johto, Steven who covered Hoenn, and Diantha who covered Kalos itself. The reborn trainers were also surprised to see Leon from the Galar region, despite how this is a way early appearance for him. There were other people in the room, mainly servers manning the buffet, and one or two people sitting off to the side, but overall it was a gathering of many of the strongest trainers in the world.

An allotment Dawn and Iris were counted among.

"Greetings, fellow region Champions!" Iris called out, "I brought the Sinnoh Champion and some companions with me!"

The other Champions turned to face Iris and the others, and surprisingly enough it was Lance who first spoke up, pointing at Trip as he wore an alarmed look on his face. "It's him!" Lance said, "The boy with the unsettling Magmar that I heard is now a Magmortar!"

"Oh come on, Mr. Popo isn't that bad," Trip said as he and the others made their way into the hall.

Looking at Lance, Steven said, "So that's the Trip boy, huh?" Turning to see the heroes and Iris, Steven went on, "Well either way, I hope we all behave ourselves. We are guests of the Kalos region after all. We must be gracious guests like how Kalos is a gracious host." To Dawn and Kenny, Steven said, "By the way, thanks again for the help you two gave while you were in Hoenn, Dawn and Kenny."

"How's Winona?" Kenny asked.

Steven immediately lit up red with embarrassment. "Needing... to take a leave of absence from her gym leader duties... because of something I did."

Dawn was able to tell that it was a touchy subject for Steven, so she got the others to drop trying to push further. "Well now," Dawn began, "I can see that a lot of Champions accepted the invitation to attend this special Pokémon Showcase as VIPs."

"What I would like to know," Leon spoke up, drawing all eyes towards him, "Is why the Champion of the Alola region didn't come."

Turning to look at Leon, Diantha explained to him, "Alola doesn't have an actual Pokémon League. As such, they don't have a Champion." Gesturing to the other Champions, Diantha went on, "Although I had heard rumor, though, that Alola may see a Pokémon League established, especially as the region's government has reason to believe it'd be a presence that'd breathe down the necks of Team Scorn members over in Alola."

"It would make Alola appear more threatening to Team Scorn, now that you mention it," Steven said, "Especially if the first Champion of Alola ends up being a strong trainer."

"I wouldn't mind getting to battle Alola's first Champion," Leon remarked, "I bet we'd have a Champion time battling."

"Champion time?" Kenny repeated questioningly.

Before anyone else could speak up, Iris said, "Anyway, I was wondering where the Paldea Champion that was sent is. I heard Paldea's main Champion couldn't make it, so someone who passed the Paldea League's Champion's Assessment thingy was sent instead."

"It's rather surprising that Paldea's actual Champion would turn down attending this special event as a VIP," Diantha remarked.

"And I'm rather curious as to how Paldea manages having multiple Champions at once," Lance went on, "And this 'Champion's Assessment' system is both a bit confusing and a bit concern-"

"Paldea has its own way of doing things."

Lance was cut off when he and everyone else heard a boy's voice call out. Judging by the tone, the boy who spoke had to be around the same (biological) age as Kenny and Trip. Everyone looked around, and it was Leon who first spotted the boy who spoke up, putting a bookmark in a book he was reading before standing up to walk over to everyone else. The boy was indeed around the same (biological) age as Kenny and Trip, and was around the same height as them as well. He had a slender body, and fair skin with golden eyes hidden behind a pair of horn-rimmed glasses with a blue frame, and long light bluish hair with matching eyebrows.

His outfit consisted of long-sleeved pale light blue school uniform top under a darker blue cold weather vest with a gold, shield shaped patch with a stylized orange on it, with orange colored wrists on the sleeves hugging the boy's wrists, a pair of school uniform shorts that were orange with pale orange lines going up them, a pair of black finger-less gloves with a golden back, a pair of black tights that disappeared into the legs of his school uniform shorts, a pair of black engineer boots, and finally a blue beanie hat. Getting close enough, the reborn trainers saw he carried what looked like a black, school issued backpack that might be leather over his back.

Looking to Lance, the mystery boy went on, "And I'll thank you for not questioning how Paldea's Pokémon League works." To the other Champions as a whole, the mystery boy went on, "And as for why Top Champion Geeta couldn't come, she's been dealt something of a hot mess regarding her other position in Paldea, so she had me attend this special event in her place."

Iris turned to look right at the mystery boy, who had confirmed himself as the representative from Paldea. "So you're the Champion ranked trainer from the Paldea region," Iris said, "Rimu, right?"

Nodding once in the affirmative, the now identified Rimu replied, "You are indeed correct." Gesturing to Iris, Rimu went on, "You're Unova's newest Champion, Iris." Folding his arms over his chest, Rimu said, "I heard you earlier when you said you wanted to see me for something. So what's up?"

"I wanna challenge you to a battle," Iris said, drawing surprised looks out of the others present.

"Dude, she just challenged the guy from the region none of us heard of," Kenny whispered to Dawn, too quietly for the others to hear.

Dawn nodded in understanding, wondering what exactly Iris was up to in challenging this Rimu boy from the Paldea region. Furthermore, and to everyone else's further surprise, Rimu nodded in acceptance. "I suppose an exhibition battle between two of the Champions visiting Kalos to attend the special event might do well to hype up the main event itself. Will a single-style battle with three Pokémon each be sufficient?"

"Sounds perfect!" Iris replied, getting the others in the room excited that two of the foreign Champions visiting Kalos for the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase were going to have a battle. There was even a suitable battlefield outside next to the Showcase hall, so everyone was able to head out and watch it as Iris threw down with the young Champion ranked trainer from the Paldea region.

Dawn, Kenny, and Trip were especially excited, as they were hoping to see some new Pokémon that none of them had seen before.

...

Everyone had gathered outside at the battlefield next to the Showcase hall. The foreign Champions, aside from Iris and Rimu who were battling, were seated with Diantha along with the heroes (again aside from Serena) on one of the two sets of bleachers along the side of the battlefield between said field and the Showcase hall; two other sets of bleachers were on the opposite side along the battlefield. Since the Champions and their guests had their bleacher to themselves essentially, everyone else who crowded in had to share the remaining three bleachers, and after that people had to stand around or next to the bleachers.

"Are you ready?" Iris asked as she called out to Rimu who stood on the other end of the battlefield opposite of her.

"I believe that we need a referee?" Rimu called back.

Before anyone said anything else, Diantha got up from where she sat. "I'll serve as referee," Diantha said as she got down, "This is taking place at a special event in Kalos, after all."

Dianta took to a spot in front of the path between the two sets of bleachers next to the Showcase hall. Many people watching had phones out recording everything as Diantha called out, "This is an exhibition battle between Unova Champion Iris and Paldea Champion Rimu! Both may use up to three Pokémon, one each at a time, and the last one with any Pokémon left able to battle when the battle is over will be declared the winner! Additionally, both may substitute Pokémon at any time! Now then!" Throwing her hands up into the air, Diantha called out, "BEGIN!"

"Excadrill, I choose you!" Iris called out as she sent in her Excadrill.

"Go, Clodsire!" Rimu said as he sent out his first Pokémon, which apparently is called Clodsire. It was a long, dark brown lump of a Pokémon with a lighter brown underside, and a stout, bulbous tail. A dorsal fin appeared starting up on its lower back and ended on the tail. It had four rounded legs that reminded Dawn, Kenny, and Trip of Quagsire's limbs, with the limbs on Clodsire being of the same light brown color as its underside. Clodsire's face was very reminiscent of Quagsire's face, leading the reborn trainers to suspect that Clodside is related to Wooper and Quagsire somehow.

Pointing at where Rimu's Clodsire was laying on the battlefield, Dawn asked, "What sort of Pokémon is that?"

"That's a Clodsire," Lance explained as he spoke up, "It evolves from the Paldea region's regional variant of Wooper." The reborn trainers knew of regional variants due to knowledge from their previous lives, and also knew some regional variants evolved into totally different species. Even so, they were not exactly expecting that Wooper of all things would get the treatment.

Down on the battlefield, Iris called out, "Excadrill, use Dig!"

"Clodsire," Rimu called out, "Use Earthquake!"

Iris's Excadrill was clearly faster, as it quickly burrowed underground. However, while it was underground, Clodsire triggered a battlefield-quaking quake, sending seismic waves all around, even making some of the audience watching cry out in surprise as they felt the quaking too. Excadrill was ejected from the ground, crying out in pain as it flew up into the air.

Looking up, Iris called out, "Excadrill! Try righting yourself and use Focus Blast!"

"Clodsire, counter with Zen Headbutt!" Rimu ordered.

Excadrill was able to right itself in the air before conjuring and casting a Focus Blast attack at Clodsire, who focused psychic power to its head before jumping up to fly right at Excadrill. The Zen Headbutt burst the Focus Blast as Clodsire eventually hit Excadrill directly. Although the Zen Headbutt wasn't very effective on the part steel Excadrill, due to the damage that Excadrill took from Earthquake while underground (it took double damage normally, and being underground had doubled the damage again), the Zen Headbutt was able to do just enough to drop Excadrill to the battlefield in defeat.

Holding up a hand, Diantha announced, "Excadrill is unable to battle! The winner is Clodsire!" The audience cheered as Rimu took the first score. The audience was also excited to see a Pokémon not normally found in Kalos. Dawn, Kenny, and Trip were all eager for more info on Clodsire as well, hence why all three of them were making separate recordings on their respective phones of this battle.

Iris recalled her fainted Excadrill before sending out her second Pokémon. "Dragonite, I choose you!" Iris said as she sent out her Dragonite. The reborn trainers were a bit apprehensive of Iris using Dragonite; even though it settled down, it still had its vicious streak. If push came to shove, Dragonite could go berserk again. It was a good thing Dawn had Tsukune on hand in case she needed to call out her named Palkia to subdue an angry Dragonite again.

Rimu aimed his Clodsire's pokéball at it while saying, "Clodsire, return!" After switching out his Clodsire, Rimu tossed up another ball while calling out, "Go, Baxcalibur!"

Coming out in Clodsire's place was a Pokémon called Baxcalibur. A clearly dragonic Pokémon, Baxcalibur looked to stand nearly seven feet tall, and it looked kind of like the kaiju that Kenny named his Tyranitar after. It had a primarily navy blue body, with icy blue hexagonal-shaped patches on its chest going down to around the underside of its tail, also one patch each on its knees. Three red quills each protruded from its wrists to go over the backs of its hands, an icy blue masking over its face, three claws each on its hands and feet with the claws being the same icy blue color, and a single large axe-like spine that looked coated in ice came out from its back.

"That... that Pokémon..." Iris said, "It's both awesome because it's clearly a dragon type, but at the same time there's something about it that unsettles me."

Rimu arched a wry eyebrow. "...Yeah, Baxcalibur is dual dragon ice type."

"That explains it," Iris said, "I kind of have a bit of a phobia towards ice Pokémon because they're strong against dragons."

"So Baxcalibur is something of a paradox to you then," Rimu said, "Well then, let's hope you can get over it!" Gesturing forward, Rimu called out, "Baxcalibur, use Dragon Claw!"

"Dragonite," Iris called out, "Use Flamethrower!"

Dragonite took aim and fired a blasting breath of fire at Baxcalibur as it came charging in with claws glowing fiercely with dragonic power. To the surprise of Iris, Baxcalibur seemed to be picking up steam as it charged through the Flamethrower, then she cried out in great surprise when Baxcalibur struck Dragonite with a wicked looking Dragon Claw. "How did Baxcalibur's Dragon Claw do as much damage as it did?" Iris called out.

"Thermal Exchange," Rimu began to explain, "Which is what Baxcalibur's ability is called. If Baxcalibur's hit by a damaging fire move, it's attack is bolstered one stage. Additionally, Baxcalibur can't be burned. Granted, it doesn't provide immunity or reduced damage, so I'd rather not try to see it kick in too many times in a battle." Indeed, Baxcalibur looked to have taken some damage from Dragonite's Flamethrower, but it's clear Dragonite's on the worse end of the stick. Pointing forward, Rimu called out, "Baxcalibur, use Ice Fang!"

"Dragonite, use Ice Beam!" Iris called out, "We'll counter their ice with our own!"

Dragonite opened its mouth to charge up and fire an Ice Beam, but Baxcalibur with icy blue glowing fangs lunged forward and bit the area on Dragoinite between its left arm and neck, more or less a bit past the shoulder. Dragonite stopped charging up its Ice Beam as it gave a pained cry, a cry that made it clear the attack boost due to the new ability the reborn trainers literally just heard about was helping to do some damage. Baxcalibur let go of Dragonite and took some steps back before Dragonite, who stumbled around a bit first, fell over and hit the ground, clearly out of it.

"Dragonite is unable to battle!" Diantha called out as she raised a hand, "The winner is Baxcalibur!"

The audience cheered again as the battle between Iris and Rimu, both of them Champions, raged on. Iris recalled her fainted Dragonite before tossing up the ball that contained her last Pokémon. "Haxorus, I choose you!" Coming out into battle was a Haxorus, which the reborn trainers and Ash all assumed was Iris's Axew having fully evolved.

"Wow guys!" Ash in the audience said to Dawn, Kenny, and Trip, "It looks like Iris's Axew had fully evolved!"

Dawn nodded in agreement as she and the rest of the people watching the battle saw it as Rimu recalled his Baxcalibur before taking out a third pokéball. Rimu, with a hint of nostalgia in his expression, turned to toss up the ball as he called out, "Go, Skeledirge!" Coming out into battle was Rimu third and final allocated Pokémon for the battle, apparently called Skeledirge. It was a large red crocodile-like Pokémon with a white underside flanked by black stripes on the far sides. There were also other white markings on its head, lower jaw, neck, back, shoulders, arms, legs, and the tip of its tail.

Skeledirge also had three black claws on each foot, markings of red, yellow, orange, and purple on the big white marking on its head and top of its snout bridge, and a wreath of yellow and orange fire from the back of its jaw, with the fire wreath going around its head. There was also a little mass of fire that looked like a bird on Skeledirge's head, having mooved there from the tip of the snout when Skeledirge entered battle. Skeledirge gave a song-like cry as it looked at Iris's Haxorus, clearly able to tell that the two of them were to do battle with one another.

Gesturing forward, Iris ordered, "Haxorus, use Giga Impact!"

The reborn trainers saw Rimu smirk a bit when Iris ordered for Giga Impact, but didn't know why. They could tell the smirk had a knowing hint to it, though. Gesturing forward, Rimu called out, "Skeledirge, use Torch Song!"

Skeledirge, as Haxorus came at it in Giga Impact, stood on its hind legs as the little bird of fire flew forward, grew out what looked to be a microphone stand, and then Skeledirge sang at the bird, sending it flying forward with great wings so that it struck right into Haxorus. The reborn trainers also saw that Skeledirge seemed to be glowing with power now, meaning one of its stats had to of been boosted. There was no time to think of that though, as Iris's Haxorus was able to get in and strike at Skeledirge directly with Giga Impact, meaning Skeledirge was taking massive damage.

...Except it didn't.

"Giga Impact didn't work on Skeledirge?!" Iris cried out in surprise, "What's going on?"

Gesturing to his Skeledirge, Rimu explained, "Skeledirge is a dual fire ghost type Pokémon. Being part ghost makes Skeledirge immune to normal type attacks such as your Haxorus's Giga Impact. That gave Skeledirge free time to use Torch Song, which bolsters Skeledirge's special attack one stage every time its used and it's able to land a hit."

In the audience, Dawn had a grim look on her face. "That would explain why Rimu looked amused when Iris called for Haxorus to use Giga Impact on Skeledirge. Iris clearly didn't know it wasn't going to work. And that Torch Song move apparently boosts the user's special attack, and Skeledirge is clearly a special attacker."

Back to the battle, Iris called out, "Haxorus, use Dragon Rush!"

"Skeledirge, push it back with Shadow Ball!" Rimu commanded. As Haxorus charged up to use Dragon Rush, Skeledirge conjured and cast a wickedly strong Shadow Ball that flew at and burst against Haxorus, pushing it back a few meters and eliciting a pained cry from the dragon Pokémon. "Now use Earth Power!" Rimu called out. Skeledirge sent power out to erupt underneath and into Haxorus, throwing it up a bit into the air and eliciting another pained cry.

When Haxorus landed, it looked to be on the edge. "Don't give up now, Haxorus!" Iris called out, "We can do this! Use Breaking Swipe!"

"Skeledirge, use Flamethrower!" Rimu called out.

Skeledirge took aim and fired a blasting breath of fire at Haxorus who charged right through it, crying out in pain but pushing through, seemingly gritting its teeth to help push through the assault. Haxorus was able to eventually reach Skeledirge, and although it hit Skeledirge with Breaking Swipe and lowered Skeledirge's physical attack (a move Dawn figured was useless as none of Skeledirge's moves are physical attacks), it looked to have done barely any damage at all. Dawn then saw that it must of had to do with the fact Haxorus was burned by Skeledirge's Flamethrower.

Haxorus took a few somewhat stumbling steps backwards, moving away from Skeledirge. Haxorus then felt its burn flare up and cause it pain, and right after that Haxorus fell over onto the battlefield and collapsed, clearly out of it. "Haxorus is unable to battle!" Diantha announced as she raised a hand, "The winner is Skeledirge! Victory of this exhibition battle goes to Paldea Champion Rimu!"

Iris, though she lost, gave an accepting sigh as she recalled her fainted Haxorus. She then walked up to Rimu and extended a hand to him. "Great battle," Iris said, "Thanks for indulging my request. The trainers of Paldea really are something."

Rimu nodded once in agreement. "You'll be surprised by what all can be found over in the Paldea region." Rimu then accepted Iris's handshake, drawing more cheers from the audience and bringing the exhibition battle to a close.

Later, with there still being some time before the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase, the heroes and various Champions were talking with one another. During that time, Rimu indulged the request of Dawn, Kenny, and Trip to let them take photos of Clodsire, Baxcalibur, and Skeledirge. After they were done taking photos, they asked Rimu about the Paldea region.

To get the reborn trainers started, Rimu took out and handed to them a brochure that seemed to detail where one should go if they go to Paldea on vacation. To Trip's surprise, he recognized the three Pokémon on the cover of the Paldea vacation brochure as Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. "I heard about them and saw a photo of the three of them together once," Trip explained, "But I never learned anything aside from that. I didn't even know where they could be found."

"They're typically given to beginner trainers in the Paldea region," Rimu explained, "Also, Skeledirge is the fully evolved form of Fuecoco."

The brochure was Dawn's and Kenny's first time seeing the Paldea region starters, and they also learned that Fuecoco fully evolves into Skeledirge. It took them having to die and then isekai in order to get any info on generation nine. Dawn and Kenny had no idea what to make of that. Trip was also surprised, as all he got on generation nine info before he died in his previous life were the game names and the starters. All three of them had learned a lot, and it made them all hungry for more details. But that would have to wait until later.

Pointing at the brochure, Rimu said, "You and your companions can go ahead and keep that, Sinnoh Champion Dawn. I have more, and can always get more after going back home after the special event here."

"Yeah, we'll wanna look this over," Dawn said, "We know next to nothing about Paldea, and what all we do know, we got today by watching you battle Iris."

"The Pokémon of Paldea are awesome," Kenny said, "I can't wait to catch some of my own to add to the cringe posse!"

Rimu folded his arms over his chest, gave Dawn and her group a wry look. "You... may not be so happy to hear it then, that members of Team Scorn are confirmed to own Pokémon belonging to species from Paldea."

"Team Scorn has some Paldean Pokémon?" Clemont cried out, sounding surprised. Additionally, everyone else there looked rightfully steamed.

Rimu nodded in the affirmative. "An Admin of Team Scorn going by Brother was able to evolve his Primeape into Annihilape, an evolution of Primeape first discovered in Paldea. Two agents known to work for Admin Brother, called Shimono and Matsuoka, respectively own a Wattrel and a pair of Oinkologne, both Pokémon found native in the Paldea region."

"I actually heard about them on the news back in Galar," Leon spoke up, "I have a little brother, you see, and he's following everything in the news that relates to Team Scorn, both actions happening in Galar, as well as those outside of Galar. According to what my little brother learned, those Shimono and Matsuoka fellows, along with a Captain's Assistant named Kenji, were all captured during a Team Scorn scheme led by a Captain Zed. However, right before I left Galar to attend this special Showcase event, my little brother told me that Admin Brother had broken the captured men out of holding. He also got their Pokémon back as they were confiscated upon arrest."

Dawn and Kenny both grimaced at the mention of Admin Brother, given they knew he had murdered a teacher at Blackthorn City Academy. Said teacher is also the one behind the expulsion of Ayane, who would go on to not only join Team Scorn, but become the Assistant to Team Scorn's Boss himself. Ayane also had been able to catch the legendary Pokémon Reshiram, which had significantly upped the level of threat that Team Scorn is now able to pose. One could say that the teacher who expelled Ayane (and solely because said teacher didn't like it when others stood up to her) is an ultimately responsible party for putting the world in danger.

Kenny was about to say something, but before he could, he was cut off when an announcement sounded out, "Attention, guests! The Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase is about to begin! Invited distinguished guests, ushers will be showing you to the VIP viewing room!"

Turning to look at the others, Dawn said, "Well guys, looks like I can't bring you with me."

"So long as the buffet in that room from earlier is still around when the Showcase is over," Kenny said, "I'll be happy."

Dawn chuckled in amusement as a group of four ushers came over and got the attention of Dawn, Lance, Steven, Iris, Diantha, Leon, and Rimu. It was of some amusement to Dawn that she saw that Leon was closely following the ushers, reminding her of how in her previous life, that Leon was canonically known to have the direction sense of a potato. Dawn, as she saw Kenny. Trip, Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie go find seats in the regular portion of the audience, hoped that she wouldn't miss too much of what they said with one another as Dawn herself would be sitting and watching the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase with other Champions.

END, CHAPTER ONE-HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-FIVE

Author's notes;

This chapter sees the heroes aside from Serena meet the Champions of the other regions, except for Alola's Champion as Alola doesn't have a League yet. They even meet a Champion from the Paldea region, and here the reborn trainers gain their first real taste of knowledge from generation nine because the Paldean Champion, that Rimu boy, is challenged by Iris but he beats her. They also learn that Team Scorn has some Paldean Pokémon, also some Team Scorn members were captured but were recently liberated. Anyway, the next chapter will see the actual Showcase itself, where Serena will wow and dazzle her best in the hopes that she'll win.
