Pokémon: Sinnoh no Isekai
Chapter One-hundred and eighty-six: The Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase
The audience in the Sojourn City Pokémon Showcase hall were all seated in the main theater, waiting for the show to start. The theater was at max capacity, every seat filled. It was a little on the crowded side to be honest here, and there were even some cases where small children were seated on the laps of others, so as to free up a seat or two for others; one such case saw Bonnie sitting on her older brother Clemont's lap. The only place in the theater to watch the upcoming Pokémon Showcase that wasn't crowded was the VIP area, as it's reserved for the Champions of various regions, the reason WHY this special Pokémon Showcase is called the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase.
Dawn found herself here in that very VIP area, as she's the Champion of Sinnoh. She also saw Lance who covered Kanto and Johto, Steven who covered Hoenn, Iris who is the newest Champion of Unova after the region passed a bill letting them boot Ideku from his rightfully earned spot, Diantha who looks over Kalos itself, Leon who is from Galar (and Dawn was surprised to see him make an appearance so early). What really surprised Dawn was the arrival of Rimu, a boy who is the Champion that is representing Paldea, a region Dawn had never heard of, but figured is the region of the gen nine games only Trip out of him, her, and Kenny lived long enough back in his previous life to see the reveal of.
Dawn was also interested in how Paldea's Pokémon League worked, its system allowing for multiple persons at the same time to hold the title of Champion. There was still a primary Champion, who according to Rimu is a woman named Geeta, but said woman was busy dealing with a problem that wouldn't permit her to leave Paldea, so she had Rimu attend the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase in her place. Dawn was also interested in what all she had learned about Paldea; it was new info on a new region, so of course Dawn was interested in it. But that business would have to wait for the time being, as the lights over the audience dimmed before spotlights were shone on the stage.
Monsieur Pierre, who was highlighted by the spotlights, drew the applause of the audience just by being shown. "Ladies and gentlemen!" Pierre called out, "Welcome to the special Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase, here live in Sojourn City, Kalos!" The audience applauded once more before simmering down when Pierre spoke up once again. "Now then," Pierre went on, "This special Pokémon Showcase has a purpose, which is to show the other regions the wonders of the culture that Kalos has to offer, hence why the special guests invited to attend to watch are powerful representatives from other regions, the Champions of the Pokémon Leagues of those regions plus Kalos's own Champion!"
The audience applauded once again, to the mild embarrassment of Dawn. From what she could tell by looking at the other Champions, only Diantha (due to seeming to be used to the attention), Iris (seemingly due to some degree of ego), and Leon (same reason as Diantha) weren't feeling similarly as embarrassed to at least some degree. Pierre on stage then held up the Princess Key that's to be awarded to the Performer who wins the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase. "And this right here," Pierre said, "The Champion's Favor Princess Key, will not only be awarded to the Performer who wins here, but it will be counted as enough Princess Keys to qualify the winner for the Master Class Showcase!"
That reveal got the audience roaring with excitement, as Dawn had expected; the Champion's Favor Princess Key is an instant pass that qualifies the winner for the Master Class Showcase, regardless of how many Princess Keys the winner had earned prior. It's like the Pokémon League Admissions Exam Badge from the old Kanto anime in that sense, as it's just one but worth enough to grant instant qualification. Dawn suspected that every Performer competing in the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase will be trying to win the Champion's Favor Princess Key, as winning it means they don't have to worry about winning any more Showcases in order to get into the Master Class Showcase.
Without further fanfare, Dawn and the other Champions saw the Showcase kicked off with seeing the competing Performers do a walk down the walkway. Dawn saw that every active Performer she's familiar with here, aside from May and Ochaco who both already have qualified for the Master Class Showcase and Aria who's the current Kalos Queen and will have to wait to defend her title, was competing here. She saw Miette with her Slurpuff, Nini with her (bratty) Smoochum, Shauna with her now Venusaur (seeing Shauna with a Venusaur took Dawn by surprise, admittedly). Dawn still saw no sign of Jessie, formerly of Team Rocket but now of Team Scorn, taking part in this Showcase, surprisingly.
Then came Serena's turn, and she came down the walkway with her Sylveon. Judging from the cheers she heard from the audience, Dawn could tell Serena was one of the most favored Performers from the walkway part here. True to form, when the walkway part was over, Serena was one of the Performers to pass into the next round; both Nini (funnily enough) and Shauna (sadly enough) were among those eliminated. Dawn, keeping herself quiet and her expression neutral, was still relieved Serena had passed into the second round. Dawn suspected that the rest of the heroes were all cheering their heads off over Serena making it past the first round, meaning she had more of a shot to win.
The next round after that was a Poké Puff baking round, meaning that a Performer's culinary skills, as well as how good their confections taste to the Pokémon who try them, are the only factors that are in play here. Among the Performers baking were Serena with her Sylveon, Miette with her Slurpuff, and that girl with the shiny Dragonair (the shiny Dragonair had caught the attention of Iris and Lance, both dragon fanatics). Dawn was surprised, but understanding, that samples of cooking from each of the competing Performers in the Poké Puff baking round were brought to her and the other Champions for their Pokémon to try; the chosen Pokémon of each Champion will determine who moves onto the next round, it would seem.
To a lack of surprise on Dawn's part, every Pokémon that was chosen by the Champions reacted very positively to Serena's cooking. Lance's Dragonite, Steven's Metagross (who is shiny), Dawn's own named Infernape Chi-Chi, Iris's Haxorus (Iris's Pokémon were all perked up with medicines after she lost to Rimu earlier), Diantha's Gardevoir, Leon's Charizard, and Rimu's Skeledirge all ate up the Poké Puffs made by Serena. Miette's cooking also got a good enough score to pass, but the cooking of the girl with the shiny Dragonair was... rather bad apparently; not enough to make any of the judging Pokémon sick, and the girl did bake things properly. It's just that her cooking just so happened to not align with the taste buds of the judging Pokémon.
As a result, the girl with the shiny Dragonair was eliminated. The only Performers of note to Dawn left were Serena and Miette, and the next round was the Freestyle performance round, were each competing Performer would wow and dazzle with their respective teams of three Pokémon who they entered with. Dawn knew it that Serena was indeed using the two Pokémon loaned to her by Ash. Dawn said nothing of what she knew, figured that she shouldn't spoil the surprise for the Champions in the VIP area with her. Dawn also wanted to know their pure, unfiltered reactions to seeing Serena whip out the guest star members of her Showcase crew that would be helping her win here.
Miette's performance in the Freestyle round with her Slurpuff, male Meowstic, and a red flower Floette surprisingly enough drew a very positive reaction from the audience down below. Even some of the other Champions with Dawn, notably Diantha and Iris, were entertained by Miette's showing. After Miette had gone, Serena was able to go. Dawn saw her take a breath to calm herself and steady her nerves. Serena then had Sylveon jump up and land in front of her in a stylish flourish as she called out her other two Pokémon, who appeared on either side of Serena upon coming out. The appearance of the Pokémon Serena called out drew loud, extremely surprised cries of awe as the audience went wild with cheering.
In the VIP section, the other Champions had varying reactions of surprise as well, most notably Iris who stood up and pointed an accusing finger down at where Serena stood, even though no one could really see Iris. "What the heck is she doing with Pokémon like that?!" Iris exclaimed, "How did she even get Pokémon like that?! How come her getting those Pokémon hasn't been known until now?!"
Rimu, who looked down at where Serena and her squad were at doing their Freestyle performance, said, "Aren't those two of the legendary bird Pokémon described in Kanto region lore?" The Paldea Champion was also surprised, but in a difference sense than Iris; he gave off hints of needing to bring what he saw here to the attention of certain persons as soon as he's able to. "Yeah," Rimu said, "Yeah, I'm fairly certain that those are Zapdos and Moltres that are being used by that Serena girl."
"This is quite the surprise," Steven remarked, "For that Serena girl to have such epic Pokémon."
"I wanna take a crack at battling that girl," Leon declared, "I've never battled someone using legendary Pokémon before!" It was clear that the Galar Champion was excited, his competitive blood boiling, at the prospect of facing off in a battle against someone fielding Pokémon commonly thought to exist only in lore.
Diantha continued to look down at where Serena was doing her Freestyle performance with Zapdos and Moltres along with Sylveon. "It's not just Serena's Pokémon in and of themselves who are impressive. Their skill in actually performing looks to be the real deal."
Lance wore a serious look of consideration on his face. "That girl, Serena... she's going to be the top scoring Performer here, I bet."
After Serena's performance was done, a few more Performers went after her. After all of the Performers had gone, the audience was prompted to vote for their favorite Performer. The other Performers in the Freestyle round felt lucky that they were able to trump a girl fielding a shiny Pokémon in the previous round, but the previous round was based on culinary skills and not looks. The Freestyle round needed them to look good, to dazzle and wow, and Serena who was fielding not one but two legendary Pokémon had wowed the audience more than what the girl with the shiny Dragonair could have. It would seem that Serena was the fan favorite here at the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase.
As the audience was voting, an usher came in to the VIP area. "Excuse me, Champions," the usher said, "But there's actually two separate votes for this Showcase, the popular vote which the audience is voting in, and the Champion's vote which only you may vote in."
"Does the Performer who wins have to win both votes?" Rimu asked, an arched eyebrow raised.
The usher gently shook her head. "No, the winning Performer will be determined solely by the Champion's vote. If a different Performer wins the popular vote, she'll be given a consolation prize. However, if a Performer wins both the popular vote and the Champion's vote, she'll not only get the Champion's Favor Princess Key and the prize being offered as a consolation prize, but also a special trophy."
Dawn was a bit worried to hear that the winner will be determined solely by the voting of the Champions here. There was also an odd number of Champions here; Lance, Steven, Dawn herself, Iris, Diantha, Leon, and Rimu totaled seven, meaning there was no way a tie would occur. Dawn, as she and the other Champions cast their votes, could only hope that enough of them voted for Serena to net her the win.
...
"And the votes are all in!" Pierre announced after all of the voting was done. The Performers who made it into the Freestyle round all stood behind Pierre. "First off," Pierre began, "The winner of the popular vote, as determined by you the audience, is..." Pierre then opened an envelope he got earlier and removed the cue card inside. "...Serena! Let's give her a round of applause!" The audience all applauded for Serena, who felt overwhelmed to have won at least something on what would be her final chance to qualify for the Master Class Showcase.
Taking out another envelope, Pierre said, "And the winner of the Champion's vote, who will be the overall winner here and earn the Champion's Favor Princess Key, is..." Pierre opened the second envelope, took out the card and saw the results of the Champion's vote. "...Also Serena!" Pierre announced, drawing more cheers from the audience as Serena hopped up and down out of sheer excitement, "Who got six out of seven votes from the Champions!" As the audience continued to applaud Serena for winning, she was awarded her prizes; the Champion's Favor Princess Key (meaning Serena now qualified for the Master Class Showcase), the consolation prize that the winner of the popular vote got which turned out to be a lovely jeweled necklace, and a special trophy that was about two feet tall.
"Let's hear it for Serena, everybody!" Pierre announced, "And wish her and the other Performers who've earned their way into the Master Class the best of luck as they compete with one another for the right to challenge Kalos Queen Aria for her title during the Master Class Showcase in Gloire City!" The audience continued to cheer as the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase was drawn to a close.
A favorable close for Serena, who was now qualified to enter the Master Class Showcase.
Later, after everything was wrapped up, Serena was able to meet up with the rest of the heroes. After returning Zapdos and Moltres to Ash, Serena looked to the rest of the group. "So guys," Serena began, "What did you think?"
"You were amazing, Serena!" Ash said, "Congratulations on winning! You're going to do well in the Master Class Showcase, I just know it!"
Dawn gave a single nod in agreement. "You really have proven yourself over the course of the many Showcases you've entered up until now. I'm certain that you'll make the other Performers you'll face off against really have to work for it if they want to have a chance of beating you."
Clapping his hands together, Kenny remarked, "You'll knock their socks off, Serena. No doubt about it."
"Since Serena's now qualified to enter the Master Class Showcase, I think we ought to head to that Gloire City place next," Trip said.
"It's actually on the way towards Snowbelle City," Clemont pointed out, "So we'll have time for it and for Ash, Dawn, Kenny, and Trip to earn their eighth Kalos gym badge each."
Bonnie let out an excited giggle. "This is so exciting, Serena! You-"
"-Owe an explanation!"
Bonnie was cut off when she and the others heard Iris call out angrily, making them turn to see Iris come practically stomping up right to them. "Seriously!" Iris snarled at Serena, "Where in the heck did you get not one but TWO legendary Pokémon from?! Also, why didn't you bring it to anyone's attention until you revealed it during the Showcase earlier?!"
"So Serena wanted Zapdos and Moltres to be her secret weapons for helping her win the Showcase here," Kenny said, "Big deal. She's not exactly obligated to share with others not only the fact that she has a secret weapon but what said secret weapon is."
"She is obligated if it's legendary Pokémon!" Iris countered, "That is information that needs to at the very least be given to reliable authorities such as Professors! This is just like how Ideku had withheld the fact he caught Enamorus before using it during the Vertress Conference he competed in!"
Dawn, a look of suspicion on her face as she crossed her arms over her chest, regarded Iris. "...You're acting as if withholding information like that is an actual straight up crime. It may be considered immoral to some extent, but by no means is it actually illegal. Not to mention expecting a trainer to reveal what all Pokémon they have in their ownership is a violation of their privacy." Dawn arched a wry eyebrow. "...I wonder how the inter-regional scene would react if it hits the news that the current Champion of Unova expects others to make their personal secrets public knowledge."
Iris took a step back, a stunned and mildly annoyed look on her face; Unova was already in hot water politically speaking on the inter-regional scene due to the xenophobic slant laws being passed through Unovan legislature as of late had taken. If Dawn decided to take Iris's annoyance and make it public while giving it the bad spin that was being implied, then not only will Unova as a whole look worse inter-regionally as a result, but since the greater amount of mud thrown in Unova's face will be Iris's fault, she'll stand to lose a lot of standing in Unova as a result.
It was as Iris was backing down that she and the heroes heard Rimu speak up, "Congratulations on winning, Serena." Everyone turned to look and saw Rimu come walking up to them. "You had put on a showing that I bet even that Kalos Queen girl Aria that I heard of will be hard pressed to beat," the Paldea Champion went on, "I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up taking Aria's crown at the Master Class Showcase."
"Thank you, umm..." Serena said, but was unable to finish due to not knowing who Rimu was.
Letting out an understanding chuckle, Rimu replied, "My name's Rimu. I'm the Champion from the Paldea region who attended the special Showcase as a VIP."
"Dude, his Pokémon are amazing!" Kenny said to Serena while pointing at Rimu, "We've never seen anything like them!"
"I bet they'd be great to use in Showcases," Serena said.
"They'd probably wow with their unique factor, but I doubt they're much in the performing arts," Rimu replied, "They're more for battling."
Iris nodded in agreement while gesturing to Rimu. "Boy, I'll say! They were all impressive, Baxcalibur especially although it being part ice type does concern me a bit..."
"She has a bit of a phobia towards ice types," Ash said, "But likes dragon types. Similarly, I have a friend named Misty who has a phobia towards bug types but she loves water types."
"Imagine if that Misty girl ever encounters a dual bug water type Pokémon then," Rimu remarked, drawing some laughter from Ash and a few of the others. Rimu then turned his attention to Serena and asked, "I take it you're headed to Gloire City, then?"
Serena gave a single affirmative nod. "I'll be headed straight there."
Rimu stretched his arms in the air, cracked his neck a bit. "Yeah, I can feel Paldea calling me home. I think I'll return straight away. I bet Geeta will want to hear of my time here in Kalos."
"Videos of your battle with Iris have already hit the internet," Kenny said, "You can just pull one up and show Geeta." Rimu gave an agreeing nod before he turned around and took off, waving the others good bye.
Similarly, Iris had to get going soon. "...I still don't like the sneaky move you pulled," Iris said to Serena, "But I guess I'll let it slide. Showcases are different from battle tournaments, after all."
The heroes saw that this was the best they were going to get with Iris for now, so they decided to take what they could get. "I take it you'll be heading home to Unova now?" Trip asked.
"Speaking of a Unovan home, I was surprised when you told me about what had happened," Iris said to Trip, "About how your hometown was besieged by Team Scorn, that your mom was killed, that you were taken in by Dawn's family and you're now living in Sinnoh."
Ash nodded in agreement. "I had some vague idea since I heard that Trip is Dawn's foster brother now, but I didn't have the details until earlier." Ash gave Trip a look of regard. "Sorry to hear what all had happened."
Trip nodded once in acknowledgement. "All I know is that the next time I see Team Scorn's Captain Zed, Imma have him have a face to face chat with Deelia.
"Good luck in doing that," Iris said before she turned around and took off.
With the heroes alone to themselves now, Bonnie clapped her hands together. "Okay!" Bonnie said, "Now that Serena's qualified to enter the Master Rank Showcase, all we need to do now is head on over to Gloire City, where Serena will strut her stuff and take home the gold! Then it'll be a hop, skip, and a jump to Snowbelle City, where Ash and the others will get their final gym badges each, meaning the boys will be able to enter the Lumiose Conference!"
Turning to look at Dawn, Clemont said, "Are you sure you don't wanna enter?"
"I'll stick out, thank you very much," Dawn replied, "Besides, I wanna keep the Sinnoh Champion title. If I ended up winning the Lumiose Conference, then beat the Kalos elite four and then Diantha after them, I'll be forced to choose between either taking the Kalos Champion title and giving up the Sinnoh Champion title, or keeping the Sinnoh Champion title and not take the Kalos Champion title. Inter-regional law prevents any one person from being the Champion of more than one region, even though Lance is an exception as Kanto and Johto share the Indigo League."
"Dawn winning the Lumiose Conference means others will be cheated out of a shot at being able to challenge the Kalos League for nothing," Trip explained, "Hence why she's not going to enter. She still likes earning badges, though."
"There's nothing wrong with wanting to earn badges, I say!" Ash declared, drawing some amused laughter from the rest of the heroes. And so, with Serena now qualified to enter the Master Rank Pokémon Showcase, the heroes are able to make their way to Gloire City, where Serena will compete for a shot at getting to challenge Aria the Kalos Queen for her title. Serena was especially glad that she'll be able to have a shot at her dream without having to deny Ash (and Kenny and Trip but Serena's care is mainly on Ash) the chance to enter the Lumiose Conference.
Serena felt as if nothing could go wrong.
Over in Anistar City, Alain had just come out of the gym, having defeated Olympia and earning the Psychic Badge from her. Alain was challenging the gyms of Kalos as he found them, and at this point he had earned seven Kalos gym badges. He just needed one more, and he'll be able to enter the Lumiose Conference, as per the word of Admin Hero, head of Team Scorn's Shield Sector, and current guardian of (i.e. the guy who's holding hostage) Mairin, the young girl who Alain had become something of a protector of as of late, for reasons that escaped even him.
Alain had walked about a dozen feet away from the gym when he heard a male voice call out, "Oi, that jacket you got is reminiscent of a Mega Charizard X!" Alain turned to see a casually dressed guy who looked to be about his age come walking up to him. "You must be Alain!" the guy went on, piquing Alain's interest as this seemingly random guy apparently knew who he was.
"And how is it that you," Alain began as he gestured to the random guy, "Someone who I have never even met until now, even knows who I am?"
The guy leaned in close to whisper into Alain's ear, alarming him a bit until the guy whispered to Alain a message that made him realize what was really going on here. "Admin Hero sent me to get you," the guy whispered to Alain, "He and some of the lads are hiding here in Anistar City. Admin Hero knows you're here and he wants to hear of your progress in the little job he gave you. He also has a side job lined up."
Alain's eyes narrowed out of suspicion, but he knew he had to play along. "...Lead the way."
...
Alain was eventually led to a spacious but fairly old multi-story house in Anistar City. When Alain was led inside, he was led up to Admin Hero, surprisingly in casual wear that didn't have the Team Scorn colors. "How many badges do you have so far?" was the first thing out of Hero's mouth upon seeing Alain.
"I got seven, having just earned the seventh one when your man got me," Alain explained, "One more badge, and I'll be able to enter the Lumiose Conference." Alain even showed his collection of Kalos gym badges to Hero as proof.
The head of Team Scorn's Shield Sector nodded approvingly. "Good, good. From the looks of it, I'd say your best bet to get your last Kalos gym badge is the gym over in Snowbelle City. But I digress." Gesturing to Alain who was putting his badges away, Hero said, "You remember when I told you to avoid the Pokémon Showcase scene? Yeah, there's been a change in plans there."
"What happened?" Alain asked.
"I saw on the news earlier that the Champion's Favor Pokémon Showcase had wrapped up. A girl named Serena won, getting her third Princess Key in the process although the special key she won would have counted as enough credit to qualify her for the Master Class Showcase either way." Alain's eyebrows perked up in piqued interest, a gesture that Hero caught onto right away. "...You're familiar with Serena."
"Would you know if she's the same Serena who travels with a group of companions that counts Sinnoh Champion Dawn Berlitz as a member?" Alain asked.
This time, it was Hero whose eyebrows were raised in piqued interest. "Yes, actually. You're familiar with Dawn and her companionship?" Alain then proceeded to tell the story to Hero of how he encountered Dawn, Serena, and the rest of the heroes, although he withheld info on Ash's Greninja with its unique transformation. "Yeah, it's good that you're familiar with them," Hero said, "But more on that later. For now, due to the fact that Dawn Berlitz and her companionship had been seen heading off in the direction of Gloire City, we'll need to take... extra precautions... for Team Scorn's plans over there. Precautions that will need extra manpower."
"That's where I come in, I guess."
Hero nodded in the affirmative to Alain's statement. "You catch on quick, yes. Yeah, we'll need you to help shore up power, although we'll have to sufficiently disguise you so that Dawn and her friends can't recognize you. We'll probably also have to give you a voice modifying dial accessory to wear around your neck. Hold on a minute, what all Pokémon of yours are Dawn and her friends aware of?"
"Just my Charizard," Alain replied.
"Refrain from using Charizard then," Hero said, "Use your other Pokémon."
"What all does this have to do with the Master Class Showcase?" Alain asked.
Gesturing to Alain, Hero explained, "The plan that Team Scorn has in Gloire City will be carried out at a time determined by certain events in the Master Class Showcase. The timing of when the plan's started may or may not directly affect the Showcase, I'll tell you when to act."
Alain nodded in understanding. "So we're going to be headed to Gloire City, then. When do we take off?"
"Immediately."
END, CHAPTER ONE-HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SIX
Author's notes;
This chapter sees the special Showcase, which Serena ends up winning thus qualifying her for the Master Class Showcase in Gloire City. Iris has complaints about Serena using Zapdos and Moltres (Iris is the one Champion to not vote for Serena) due to how Serena had done with them what Ideku had done with Enamorus (Iris isn't aware of the fact that Zapdos and Moltres actually belong to Ash who was letting Serena borrow them for the special Showcase), but Iris is made to back down from any other attempts to grill Serena over this by Dawn, who threatened to give Iris a negative spin in inter-regional politics. With the keys she needs in hand, Serena is now able to set her sights on her ultimate goal; the Master Class Showcase in Gloire City.
Speaking of, a number of Team Scorn members have a scheme in store for Gloire City, and its timing will depend on outcomes of what goes on in the Showcase. Due to Serena's qualifying for the Master Class Showcase making the news, Admin Hero becomes aware that the heroes will be in Gloire City, making him call upon Alain who is an (unwilling) agent working for him at the moment. Alain, who has by this point earned seven of the eight Kalos gym badges he needs, is given the task of beefing up the power that Hero's forces for the scheme in Gloire City will have. But what exactly that scheme is, as well as why it's tied to the timing of certain events in the Master Class Showcase, will be seen in the chapters to come. Take care.
