This is a short one, sorry.
The 6th of December 2010 wasn't going to be a day that would be forgotten. That night the tram crashed into the street taking the lives of Ashley Peacock and Molly Dobbs. It also very nearly took the lives of Rita, Jack and Peter.
That very same morning had been somewhat calm. Most people were going about their day as normal but Peter and Leanne were doing the final touches for their Hen and Stag do which was taking place later that evening.
Carla and Michelle were sitting in Roy's as they did every morning before opening up the factory when a very cheery Leanne approached them. "So you two are definitely coming over to the Rovers tonight?" She beamed. Leanne's Hen party would be held in the Rovers while Peter's Stag would be in the Joinery.
"Yeah, of course." Michelle nodded enthusiastically. "I've got this lovely dress that I haven't had the chance to wear."
"Carla?" Leanne asked.
"Uh… Yeah, I wouldn't miss it." Carla replied. Leanne then proceeded to walk up to the counter and order a coffee leaving Michelle and Carla to themselves once more.
"Are you alright?" Michelle asked. Michelle looked at Carla and could see she clearly wasn't herself and hadn't been as of recently.
"Yeah, I'm fine… It's just a Hen do when I'm not supposed to be drinking isn't exactly my idea of fun." Carla said.
"Okay, then I won't drink either." Michelle said hoping to make Carla feel better. Carla just shook her head.
"Don't be daft, I wouldn't expect you to do that." Carla said.
"Just come for an hour or so… Leanne's been a good friend to you over the years, she'd probably be gutted if you didn't at least show your face." Michelle said to which Carla swallowed and nodded. If only she knew.
Carla was absolutely devastated with the way things happened with Peter. She truly thought they could've had something special but she should've known all along that Peter wasn't going to be able to leave Leanne.
Over the past week, Carla has tried her best to avoid Peter at all costs. Of course, they would inevitably cross paths whether that was just simply walking down the street or in the Rovers at lunch when Carla and Michelle would pop in during their break. Leanne would always make the effort to talk with Carla and Michelle but Carla wouldn't give Peter the time of day, despite him trying his hardest. Neither Michelle or Leanne had noticed the awkward atmosphere between both Carla and Peter. For all Michelle knew she was still confiding in him about her drinking problem.
The evening soon rolled around and by the time Carla arrived at the Rover's it was quite busy with the likes Deirdre and Janice of course. Michelle was already there and talking with Leanne at the bar. "Carla!" Leanne squealed as she flung her arms around her.
"How much have you had?" Carla asked chuckled to see that Leanne wasn't wasting anytime in getting drunk.
"Not much actually, with Peter not being able to drink, it's nice to actually be able to let my hair down." She smiled. "Ooh let me get you a drink… Red wine?" Carla shook her head.
"Oh no, not for me… I'll just have a lemonade for the time being." Carla said. "Gotta pace myself." She said as she looked at Michelle.
"Ugh, you're no fun." Leanne pouted.
"Ey, wait until the strippers here, you won't be saying that then." Michelle chuckled. Carla raised her eyebrows.
It was safe to say that Carla wasn't feeling being in the Rover's celebrating the upcoming wedding of Leanne and Peter when not too long ago she was having it off with Peter behind Leanne's back. Although she felt majorly guilty about it, she was completely heartbroken that it didn't work out.
Carla was about to make an early exit when suddenly there was a loud crashing coming from outside. "What was that?" A few people in the pub said as they all made their way out of the pub.
They were met with a horrific scene right there in front of them. The tram had been derailed and had gone crashing into the Joinery, Kabin and Dev's. The street was swarmed with people as they came to see what had happened. "What was that-" Michelle began as she joined Carla, followed by Leanne. They all took in the scene in front of them before Leanne let out a blood curdling scream.
"Peter's in the Joinery!" She said as she began to push her way through the crowds. Michelle followed as did Carla. Deirdre was going into number one to get Ken but he soon came out before she even had the chance.
When they got there, the majority of the building was ruined. "Was he definitely in there?" Michelle asked. Carla couldn't even form a sentence. She'd been in this position before hadn't she, the man she was supposed to love was killed tragically, she couldn't go through this again.
"Yes, he's in there!" Leanne said as she collapsed to the floor.
Ken and Deirdre had made their way to where Carla, Michelle and Leanne were and Deirdre instantly began consoling Leanne.
Soon the emergency services arrived at the scene. "What if he's dead?" Leanne cried.
"You don't know that." Michelle said trying to remain positive.
Time felt as though it was ticking on but Peter was eventually found, alive. Although he was in such a bad way, that he was nowhere near out of the woods. Leanne, Ken and Deirdre made their way to the hospital. Carla wanted nothing more than to be there with them, although she had no right. In fact she wasn't sure she would actually be able to face him. She'd been extremely harsh to him and felt sick with guilt knowing that it could be the last memory she has of him.
Unfortunately the awful tragedy had killed Ashley and Molly which brought grief to the entire street. It was at this point Carla decided she wanted to go home. She wanted to go home and drown in a bottle of wine but knew it wouldn't really make her feel any better.
Michelle went back to Carla's flat with her. "Leanne said that she would get in touch if anything happens." Michelle said. Carla nodded sadly as she sat down on her sofa - The sofa which her and Peter would spend the evening cuddled up on while he claimed to be at an AA meeting. "Poor Jack has lost his mother." Michelle sniffed as she sat next to Carla.
"Simon could lose his Dad." She said feeling completely sick.
"No, we don't know that… Peter's-"
"Peter's fighting for his life right now… Nobody knows anything on how this could affect him in the long term if he does make it out alive." Carla said swallowing hardly as tears threaten to spill.
That night Carla spent the majority of the night laying in bed awake. How on earth could she fall asleep not knowing if Peter would ever be okay. She tossed and turned all night long.
It was still dark outside when she decided to get out of bed but it was morning. Michelle ended up going home herself later last night. Carla made herself a coffee and sat down at her table thinking over everything that had happened.
She then began blaming herself. Maybe if she hadn't ended things with Peter the way she had then he would've told Leanne the truth and there wouldn't have been a Stag party in the Joinery which got destroyed with a tram, trapping Peter inside. Carla was completely tying herself up in knots. She began thinking about that perfect night they'd spent together at the hotel the other week. Peter had made sure she'd had nothing short of the best. Now she felt guilty at the fact, he went to that effort and she was pressuring him to leave Leanne.
