Chapter Two-hundred and twenty-four: Buddy Cop Investigation
The heroes and their classmates were gathered in their classroom at trainer school on Melemele Island, with the additions of Paul, Gladion, Ideku, and Ideku's brother Katsuku being there. Standing in front of them was Kenny, who had his big dry erase board behind him. "Okay people," Kenny said, "Time to go over the fourth movie that will be coming out from Kenny Harris Studios! This one is going to be a murder mystery where an older socialite dies, and an investigator comes in to check things out with the socialite's three surviving daughters and one maid."
Folding his arms over his chest, Paul said, "I'm rather suspicious of the maid already, although I also got a feeling she may end up being a false lead."
Nodding once in acknowledgement to Paul, Kenny said, "Now originally, this movie would only have ONE detective investigate the case. But some... rather convincing persuasion... from the parents of Ideku and his brother Katsuku here instead gave me the idea to add in some buddy cop elements and make it a pair of detectives who go in to investigate things instead."
"Yeah, don't remind me," Katsuku said, looking mildly embarrassed.
"The notes that your best bud's girlfriend took at that one lecture given by the girlfriend's homeroom teacher actually helped me fill the movie out a bit," Kenny replied as he pointed to Katsuku.
"A lecture that Amanda's homeroom teacher gave?" Trip asked, looking mildly confused.
Nodding once in the affirmative, Katsuku said, "Amanda's homeroom teacher gave a lecture to both Amanda's class and my own class about Johto region inheritance laws. The reason he decided to give us a lecture on so random a subject is because a relative of his died in their home region of Johto and, as a citizen of the Johto region, their estate was subject to Johto region inheritance laws, of which there are many which are designed mainly to prevent the deceased's will from screwing over any surviving relatives that the deceased may have left behind."
"I did a little research into Johto region inheritance laws to help work things out in the script," Kenny explained, "And the movie will be set in a city in the Johto region. But we can cover that later. Anyway, this movie will have a relatively light cast, assuming we don't count extras who don't have lines. First off, there will be the old socialite, her three daughters, and the maid. That said, the girls will be getting those roles, although auditions will have to be held for them."
"Question about the socialite character who dies," Lana said, "You said she was older, right? How will you simulate an older appearance?"
"Movie make-up magic," Kenny replied, "The girl will also have to be able to exude a warm, welcoming, even motherly vibe to help sell the image of being a kindly old lady, given that the socialite was, well, a kindly old lady before her passing." Turning to look at Dawn, Kenny said, "I may end up having you play the role of the socialite, Dawn, given that you got that vibe I'm looking for going right now given you're raising the Poipole who decided to stay with you."
"How, assuming I do get the role of the socialite, will my character work in the movie?" Dawn asked.
Pointing at Dawn, Kenny said, "The movie will open with your character laying dying in bed with some others standing by to be with your character in her final moments. The doctor, who will be played by one of the boys, will check for a pulse and confirm your character died after a bit of a croaking scene. Then the movie will cut to the opening credits and show the detectives, who will be played by Ideku and Katsuku, going to a law office where they'll attend a will reading."
"So who, aside from me and my brother's characters, will be at the will reading?" Ideku asked.
Listing off of his fingers, Kenny said, "There will be the lawyer reading the will, the three daughters, and the maid. After the reading of the will, things shift to the late socialite's manor. We'll be using Lillie and Gladion's family's place for the manor."
"We're using my family's home as a set for the movie?" Lillie asked.
Pointing at Lillie, Kenny said, "Your mother actually not only gave permission, she even asked to be in the movie even if it's a bit role. She'll play a maid who will greet the arriving party, be seen for a few seconds, and then not show up for the rest of the movie." Arching a wry eyebrow, Kenny said, "You mom is a surprising fan of the movies we've made. She really thinks you were adorable in the Mina Carrow movie."
"It's gonna be interesting to see me and Lillie's mom in a maid outfit," Gladion remarked dryly.
Nodding once, Kenny said, "We'll be using long-sleeved maid outfits with the dress reaching the ankles for the maid characters," Kenny said, "I got it that styles more classical in Victorian-era Galar, rather than the short sleeved short dress number more popular in modern Kalos." Clapping his hands together, Kenny said, "Now Dawn, aside from your death scene in the beginning, your only appearance in the movie will be in a pre-recorded video will that we'll have to record ahead of time. After all of that is done, you pretty much won't be used for the rest of the movie."
Nodding once, Dawn said, "Fair enough." A couple more topics were covered, and soon enough the structure of how the movie will go was planned out.
The screen was black save for the Kenny Harris Studios logo appearing as Kenny's voice said, "A Kenny Harris production." The screen then faded from black to show Dawn, with make-up and prostetics applied to make her look like an old woman, lying in bed weak and sick as a few persons stood around her bed, including Gladion who was dressed like a doctor. Dawn had a violent coughing fit that raised her up from the bed, right before she fell back down and laid still. As some of the others who were there looked on in shock, Gladion reached forward to check for a pulse.
"...She's dead," Gladion said, prompting some of the gathered others in the room to talk among themselves in shock. Meanwhile, the camera panned to look at Serena who was dressed like a maid and Mallow, Lana, and Lillie who were all dressed like wealthy socialites. The scene then cut to seeing the legs of two persons walking, with the title of the movie 'Inheritance by Death' appear on the screen before fading away. The camera then zoomed out to show Ideku and Katsuku, both dressed casually but both were wearing PI badges, walking along a busy city street.
"So Ideku, what's the case we were hired to look into this time?" Katsuku asked.
"That really wealthy old socialite lady named Dawn had passed away recently," Ideku said, "But Dawn's first born daughter Lana suspects foul play. Lana wants to keep things as private as possible until there's some solid confirmation, so she hired us to help look into matters."
Katsuku nodded once in understanding. "And I assume we're heading to the law office here in Ecruteak City for part of the case miss Lana hired us for."
Ideku nodded once in the affirmative. "We're going to be sitting in on the will reading. It's a video will, although the lawyer running the will reading has a printed copy of the will to fact check." The two PIs nodded once to each other before they arrived at the law office located in Ecruteak City and made their way inside.
...
Inside of one of the rooms in the law office, Sophocles who wore a balding head wig to make him look like a balding middle-aged man sat at a desk, dressed in a suit to help give him the image of an older man who was a lawyer reading a will. Ideku stood off to the side with Katsuku as Lana, Mallow, Lillie, and Serena all sat in chairs in front of the desk that Sophocles sat at. "Thank you all for coming," Sophocles said, "I... understand that this may be difficult for you due to the recent death that you all had bore witness to."
"Well she was getting on in years," Mallow said, sounding rather indifferent for a woman whose mother just died, "Not to mention how she had been getting rather sick."
"Err, umm, yes," Sophocles said, "Anyway, a video will was prepared by your mother, who likewise saw her age and sickness could potentially end her." Sophocles then prepared to play the video will, getting everyone to turn to face the screen.
"Heh," Lana smirked in amusement, "We're bound to get everything, then we can kick this worthless lower class lout to the curb." Serena, when she saw Lana jerk a thumb to her while Mallow and Lillie nodded in agreement, only looked a bit concerned.
Soon enough, the video will started playing, and it showed Dawn sitting in a chair, dressed like a classic granny, and the make-up effects done right to help make her resemble an old lady. "Well now, it would appear that I'm dead," Dawn in the video will said while imitating an old lady voice as best she could, "But then again that was pretty obvious as this video is being played. Anyway, there are only four persons that I wish to mention in my last will and testament. The first three being my daughters Lana, Lillie, and Mallow, to whom I leave..."
The daughters all leaned forward in eager anticipation, only to reel back when Dawn in the video will said, "...Absolutely nothing."
"WHAT?!" Lana, Lillie, and Mallow all exclaimed in unison.
Nodding once, Dawn in the video will said, "I bet they all cried out in surprise by now. Anyway, they are all spoiled, none of them knowing the value of a dollar, they don't even view other people below their social level as actual people. They not only don't deserve any of my estate, but if they got it anyway then they would be bound to squander the lot of it within two years time. It is not a thought that I, as I am bound to take to the grave with me, find no comfort in." Lana, Mallow, and Lillie were all looking on in shocked disbelief at the video will as it played
"But I do draw comfort from the fact that the fourth and final person that I wish to mention in my will, my loyal maid of many years Serena, is worthy," Dawn went on, the mention of Serena's name making her perk up, "She understands humility as she is a humble person, she understands the value of a dollar as she actually had to work to earn what money she had, she sees value in all persons and not just those at or above her social level and as such respects all persons. As such, I am leaving the whole of my estate to Serena. Good day."
After the video will cut out, Sophocles turned to look at the three daughters and the maid. "...Umm, well now," Sophocles said, "That happened."
Letting out a troubled sigh, Lana said, "Well now, I guess that we ought to respect mother's wishes. Congratulations, Serena, it looks like you're moving on up."
"There is... one other condition to the will," Sophocles said, "Miss Dawn said that, after the will reading is taken care of, the four of you are to stay the night at her old manor, to try and bury the hatchet and what not."
"We could have a dinner to celebrate Serena's advancing through society, I suppose," Lillie said as she and the others got up, leaving Sophocles's office with Ideku and Katsuku turning to leave with them.
Even Sophocles got up and left, but did so while saying in a rather urgent tone as he sped by, "Excuse me, I need to go download a brownload." After Sophocles rushed passed, the last three still in the office were Ideku, Katsuku, and Lana but all three of them were leaving.
Although Lana stopped the two PIs. "...See what I told you?" Lana said, "I knew something was gonna be off, and this seals the deal. It's obvious that lower class lout Serena had done something to tamper with my mother's will. I need you two men to find proof of it."
"...If we can come to the party at the manor, then sure," Ideku replied.
...
Later over at the manor, which was really the mansion that Lillie's family lived at, the sisters, as well as Serena, Ideku, and Katsuku, all made their way up the steps to the front door. When Lana knocked on the front door, it was answered by Lusamine wearing a Victorian era style maid outfit. "Oh, Miss Lana," Lusamine greeted, "I take it you're here to see what all you and your sisters had inherited?"
"Actually, Serena got the whole lot," Lana said in a resigned tone, "We're just here to have a dinner party to show there are no hard feelings."
"Very well, I'll let the chef know," Lusamine replied as she turned around and went back into the manor, being followed by the daughters, Serena, and the two PIs. As the two PIs walked into the manor, they both felt that something was going to be... off... about the dinner party that was going to be thrown. They would be putting their skills as PIs to the test in order to get to the bottom of... whatever was going on here.
...
After the meals were prepared, they were brought to the long dining table; Katsuku even helped carry two of the plates out, setting the one in his left hand at Lana's place and the one in his right at Mallow's place; all of the meals were identical, so Katsuku figured that it didn't matter who got what plate. Once all of the plates were placed as places at the table, everyone was called in to sit down and dine. Of course, it was just the three sisters and Serena who were served meals; Katsuku and Ideku sat at the table as well but only had drinks.
"So Serena," Mallow began, "What is it you plan to do now that you've reached the top of what society has to offer?"
Serena looked down at her place at the table, still unsure how to react, when all of a sudden Lana started coughing and gagging violently, her face flushed with purple, before she fell over face first into her meal with a splat. Ideku and Katsuku got up and rushed to Lana as Mallow, Lillie, and Serena all gasped in shock. Ideku picked up Lana's right arm and pressed his fingers against her right wrist to check for a pulse.
Ideku, with a grim look on his face as he lowered Lana's arm back down, said, "She's dead. Looks like poison."
"I knew it!" Mallow declared, "I knew it this whole time! The grounds that mom had this manor built on are haunted!"
"Mallow, didn't you hear what the PI said?" Lillie admonished, "Lana was poisoned! This is obviously a murder!"
"Yeah it's obviously a murder!" Mallow declared, "And the culprit is the ghosts haunting the grounds mom had the manor built on! We need to have the manor demolished and the land returned to the rightful owners!"
"Girls, girls, settle down," Katsuku said, "Ideku and I will look into the manner. We'll check the kitchens, see if we can't find evidence of poison. Meanwhile, you all sit tight and try not to lose your heads."
...
In the kitchen of the manor, Ideku and Katsuku were looking around for evidence of poison. Ideku found a small dark brown glass bottle with a dropper, and the bottle had a black lable with a white skull and crossbones symbol on it, and under the symbol was the word 'POISON' in big bold capital letters. Ideku found that small bottle when he opened the spice cabinet.
Putting on a glove first, Ideku then reached in and grabbed the poison with his gloved hand. "Well here's the poison, and from the looks of it I'd say that this bottle is a little bit less than full, meaning some of it's been used."
"Wait, why would the poisoner who put poison in Lana's meal put the bottle of poison away in the spice cabinet?" Katsuku asked.
Shrugging with a mildly confused look on his face, Ideku said, "Beats me." Folding his arms over his chest, Ideku went on, "I get the strange feeling that someone's trying to kill off everyone that was listed in Dawn's will so that they can have all of her estate to themselves. That said, Mallow, Lillie, and Serena are the suspects that we've got to work with in what I am now for the sake of convenience am going to label as Lana's murder."
Nodding once, Katsuku said, "I'm willing to bet it's the maid Serena who murdered Lana with that poisoned meal. Serena was the one person listed in Dawn's will that wasn't one of Dawn's three daughters, maybe she feels everything will fall to her by default if the daughters are all dead."
"Problem with that theory, Katsuku," Ideku said, "Serena was listed in Dawn's will as the sole beneficiary. Serena already is getting everything. Why would she feel it necessary to murder all of Dawn's daughters?"
Before Katsuku could respond, he and Ideku were cut off when they heard Serena's screaming in fright. The two PIs rushed over to where they heard Serena cry out from in alarm in the hopes they can prevent another tragedy.
...
When they got to the scene, Ideku and Katsuku saw Serena, Lusamine, and Paul dressed as a butler looking rattled as they all looked down from a balcony she stood on. The two men ran over and looked over a balcony, only to see Mallow laying dead on the ground. "What happened?" Ideku asked.
"Serena was discussing with Lusamine and I about how to continue the various charity works that Miss Dawn had been running before she passed," Paul said, "Serena knelt down to tie her left shoe when she saw the shoelace was undone on it, and we were alerted when we heard a thump on the grass outside. When we looked over the balcony, we saw Miss Mallow laying dead on the ground."
Katsuku, acting on a hunch, looked from the far end of the room that led out to the balcony, then across the balcony, then over the ledge to where Mallow laid on the ground. He looked at the angle Mallow must have fallen from, then looked down at Mallow herself. "...Everyone but Serena, follow me," Katsuku said, "There's something that I wanna check out concerning Mallow."
Ideku, Lusamine, and Paul all followed Katsuku down to the outside garden that Mallow fell into. They went over to her body and Katsuku, with Ideku's help, gently turned her body over after they put on fresh gloves first. To their surprise, they found a knife laying under Mallow's body, and the angle they found it at suggested that Mallow had accidentally stabbed herself in the fall. "...What the hell is going on here?" Ideku said, "First Lana is murdered by a poisoned dinner, then Mallow accidentally kills herself with a combination of accidental stabbing herself and falling from a-"
"AAAAAAHHHHHH!"
Ideku was cut off when he, Katsuku, Lusamine, and Paul all heard Serena scream again. "Serena's in trouble!" Lusamine exclaimed, "We need to go save her!"
"Oh if only we didn't have her wait by herself!" Paul said as he and the others all ran to where Serena was at.
"Yeah, not my brightest moment I will admit," Katsuku said while he and the others ran.
...
When Ideku, Katsuku, Paul, and Lusamine all got to where Serena had beel left, they saw that she was being cornered by Lillie who had a sword out and was approaching Serena with the clear intent to kill. "What do you think you're doing?!" Ideku loudly demanded, making both Serena and Lillie turn to see the party that had just arrived.
Pointing her sword at Serena, Lillie said, "This lower class lout ruined everything for me and my sisters! She's getting everything in the will while my sisters and I were left out to dry! So we decided in secret to kill this nobody maid so that the inheritance will default back to us! We even hoped to trick you PIs into thinking Serena had messed with our mom's will to get everything! So after we had tricked you two into calling it a Serena being the guilty party, we were hoping to kill her off for daring to take from us what is rightfully ours!"
"Yeah, what your mom said in her video will was right on the money," Katsuku said, a grim look of even unamusement on his face.
Pointing her sword at Serena, Lillie went on, "But this one here must have gotten wise to what my sisters and I were doing, how else can you explain how she knew Lana had poisoned her dinner but swapped her poisoned meal out for Lana's unpoisoned meal?"
"Umm, actually I had brought the plates out to the dining room," Katsuku said, "I had no idea at the time that one of the meals was poisoned."
Looking confused, Lillie asked, "Well then you have to arrest Serena for pushing Mallow off the balcony!"
"We found evidence that Mallow had rushed Serena with a knife she planned to stab her with," Ideku said, "Even IF Serena had pushed Mallow off the balcony, it could be ruled as self-defense."
"And Serena, as well as Lusamine and myself, had no idea Mallow was even there until after we heard her body hit the ground," Paul said, "We were talking and didn't know what was going on around us. Serena even knelt down to tie a shoelace."
Katsuku nodded once in understanding. "Mallow must have kept going due to momentum and fell over the edge of the balcony on accident."
Looking dumbstruck, Lillie said, "So Serena avoided both attempts on her life so far by sheer dumb luck?!" Turning to face Serena, Lillie as she raised her sword said, "But this is where Serena's luck runs ou-" Lillie was cut off when Ideku and Katsuku pulled out guns and fired a few shots at Lillie, hitting her and making her fall over onto the floor dead.
...
The following morning, as three body bags were loaded into ambulances outside of the manor, Ideku and Katsuku were talking to Gladion dressed as a police officer. "So that's the story," Gladion said, "The three daughters were ticked off that they were cut from Dawn's will and all that Dawn had was left to Serena, so they resolved to kill Serena figuring the estate would default back to them."
Nodding once in confirmation, Ideku said, "Yes, Chief Gladion."
Gesturing to the two PIs, Gladion asked, "Now here's my question. If the daughters were so upset with being cut from the will, why didn't they simply hire a lawyer to help them contest the will? I mean, this IS the Johto region we all live in, even a greenhorn lawyer could have very easily have helped the daughters win their case by bringing up how Dawn's will was going against most every statute in Johto region inheritance laws."
"My guess is that they were too lazy and or stupid to even bother checking," Katsuku said, "I mean, the one daughter thought that the manor was built on haunted grounds."
"That may have been a ruse," Ideku said, "Although given how easily two of the daughters had killed themselves off, maybe there was some legitimacy to their stupidity."
Shrugging, Gladion said, "Well since all of the daughters are dead, there's nothing stopping Dawn's will from doing exactly as Dawn had intended. It looks like Serena the maid will be moving on up after all." The two PIs nodded in understanding as the case was brought to a close, and they saw Serena one last time before the two of them went back to their PI office, waiting things out for their next case.
THE END
The movie 'Inheritance by Death' was successful by the standard of other Kenny Harris Studios movies. Additionally, Kenny got it that the movie was satisfactory enough to the desires of the Badorigo parents, so for now the heroes and their classmates can rest easy. "Say, I'm rather curious about something," Serena said as she and the rest of the heroes and their classmates, plus Gladion, Paul, Ideku, and Katsuku hung in the classroom, "How DO inheritance laws in the Johto region work?"
"Well first off, in the Johto region in real life, a will that leaves everything to one non-related person would never fly," Katsuku explained, "In the Johto region, most of the estate of someone who passes away HAS TO remain with persons related to the deceased. At minimum, ninety percent of the overall value of a deceased person's estate has to remain with surviving family, so there's no 'leaving everything to one non-relative' or 'leaving everything to charity'."
"Even if the estate would be inherited by incompetent spoiled brats?" Kiawe asked.
"Hey, that's how inheritance laws in Johto work," Katsuku said, "Additionally, wills of deceased Johto citizens also can't leave very small amounts of value to relatives, like for example a will can't say that a son is left with one buck. All persons related to the deceased have to be left a set amount of value or, if the overall value of the deceased's estate isn't enough for all relatives to get that set amount of value each, the estate's value is calculated and then divided up as evenly as possible. A person inheriting from a deceased relative can get the allocated value by being left enough items so their combined calculated value reaches the point they're entitled to. It also will work for an entitled person to receive the value in the form of cash."
"According to the homeroom teacher of that Amanda girl," Ideku said, "Related persons also can't be cut out from a will. Johto region inheritance laws basically ensure that persons related to a deceased person not only WILL inherit from the deceased, but also ensure they get more than a pittance inheritance."
Folding his arms over his chest, Katsuku said, "The one exception is if ownership of a Pokémon is listed as something to be inherited in a will. In that case, then the person being listed in the will as inheriting ownership of the Pokémon being left to them will get what was left to them there, no questions asked. Say for example a man living in Johto owns a Houndoom, and he dies but in his will he says that he leaves ownership of his Houndoom to a friend outside the family. The friends in question gets ownership of the Houndoom, regardless of how the deceased man's relatives feel."
Nodding once, Dawn said, "Yeah, I read up on Johto region inheritance laws, and I have to admit that they pretty much ensure that family, no matter how undeserving, will get a very significant portion of the pie. The laws I got it were written up by someone shafted by a deceased relative's will to ensure people aren't screwed over by a deceased relative's will in Johto ever again, also the law writer in question was very clearly someone who proved the deceased relative right in shafting in the will."
Shrugging, Trip said, "Man, makes me glad I don't live in Johto. Granted, Johtonians are nowhere near as messed up overall as Unovans, but Johtonians have some rather messed up laws concerning inheritance."
Clapping his hands together, Kenny said, "Anyway, I have some good news for you all, I got a plot idea for the next Kenny Harris Studios movie, and it'll be something of a cute heartwarming movie."
Arching a wry eyebrow, Dawn asked, "You're... gonna try and do a cute heartwarming movie."
"Oh yeah, I estimate it'll be ready in time for a festival to celebrate moms that Professor Kukui told me is coming up," Kenny said, "Anyway, the movie will basically star all of the girls, each one bringing with them into the movie a small cutesy Pokémon that they own, and basically the girls will raise their Pokémon as if they were their actual babies. I still need to do a little research for it, though."
"Uhh, problem Kenny," Mallow said, "I... don't have a Pokémon that's small and cutesy, especially as Stenne had recently evolved into Tsarenna."
"You can borrow one from one of the other members of the cast," Kenny replied. Turning to look at the other girls, Kenny asked, "How about you girls? Do each of you have a small cutesy Pokémon that you can use?"
"Snowy still hasn't evolved," Lillie answered.
"Popplio is unevolved as well," Lana replied.
Nodding once, Serena said, "I think at this point, Pancham is my best bet."
Dawn was about to speak up, but her named Poipole Wyrmscale came out, made a happy but reserved cry, then cuddled up into Dawn. Smiling gently, Dawn said, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Wyrmscale here would be perfect for the role of a small cutesy Pokémon who is an allegory for a baby being raised by a mom."
Clapping his hands together, Kenny said, "Mosel tov! I need to do the research like I said, as well as think of additional roles, but it's already looking like we'll have a solid cast!" The classmates and other cast members all gave a cheer at the success of the fourth Kenny Harris Studios movie while excited to see what's in store for the fifth one that's coming out.
END, CHAPTER TWO-HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FOUR
Author's notes;
This chapter basically covers the fourth Kenny Harris Studios movie, a murder mystery that Kenny originally intended to have only one PI try to solve, but he adjusted the script to add buddy cop elements and have Ideku and Katsuku star alongside one another in order to get the Badorigo parents to chill. Kenny also reveals what the fifth movie will be, and it'll be a light heartwarming number where girls raising small cutesy Pokémon is an allegory for moms raising babies and small children. But before that can be covered, one of the Alola Contests being redone due to Ayane's Ochaco alias being busted will be held in the next chapter; this will be the start of a bit of a mini-arc to cover redoing those Contests and getting Serena to a full party; note she only has four Pokémon right now. Until then, take care.
One last side note; in the previous chapter, I had originally spelled the nickname for Kenny's Necrozma, Zamasu, as Zamatsu (there was a 'T' in it), but have since edited the previous chapter to fix this mistake. So in case anyone was wondering, well... there you go.
