Chapter Two-hundred and thirty-one: It's ya boi

The reborn trainers and Ash were at Serena's place as they watched her practice with her Pokémon in her backyard. "Serena's looking to have a fire in her belly now," Kenny remarked as he and the others watched Serena train, "But then again who can blame her?"

Ash nodded in agreement with Kenny. "She's recently gotten her second Tiki Necklace. Two more and she can qualify for the Alola Contest Grand Festival. It's only natural that she would be excited now that she's at the halfway point of reaching her goal."

"If I recall correctly," Dawn said, "Kukui-sensei had said something about you excitedly dancing about when you cleared your second Grand Trial, Ash." Ash blushed a bit out of some embarrassment, but the boy from Pallet Town, Kanto still couldn't help but smile at least a little bit.

"Even though Ochaco," Trip began, "Or as we now know her as Ayane, is no longer a threat to Serena's progress in earning Tiki Necklaces, Serena still has some rather noteworthy opposition to face in the Contest circuit here in Alola, especially so when it comes to Shauna and especially May. Serena can't be resting on her laurels right now, given that she's at the halfway point in her efforts to qualify for the Alola Contest Grand Festival."

"Serena's got a full party now," Kenny said, "And half of her team is fully evolved. She also has multiple shiny Pokémon which, unlike with how Showcases in Kalos are getting, aren't restricted from use in Alolan Contests. And Serena has a good few tricks up her sleeves. I say that, provided she continued to practice her stuff, train well, keep her cards close to her chest, and have a little bit of luck, then she'll do fine."

Dawn looked over to where Serena was practicing with all of her Pokémon; Braixen, Sylveon, Pangoro, Zorua, Trevenant, and Clauncher all were looking good. And it wasn't just looking good that Serena had; she also had a fair bit of power going as well, which was necessary as Serena had to actually battle opponents in Contests as there were battle rounds. Having power for that did not hurt, especially considering that one of the win conditions in a Contest's battle round was straight up knocking out the other Pokémon like how a normal battle worked.

Dawn gave a passing thought to how, if she got into Contests here, then all of her wins in Contests' battle rounds would come from straight up knocking out the opposing Coordinator's Pokémon. Not all that elegant of a method, Dawn will admit, but it would still get the job done all the same. But luckily for Serena, she has the skill and training to win in Contest battle rounds via methods other than straigh up defeating the opposing Coordinator's Pokémon.

...

The next day, the heroes got to Poni Island so that Serena could enter the Pokémon Contest there. "Hey Serena," Kenny said, "Aren't you excited?"

"Nervous is more accurate to say," Serena replied, "But I won't let that stop me from putting on the show that the audience came to see!"

"Well alright, Serena!" Ash said as he flashed Serena a thumbs up, "That's the can-do attitude you have that I like to see!" Serena turned away from facing Ash as the praise from him was making her blush.

Looking around, Trip saw that both Shauna and May had shown up. Trip was also surprised to see that Hapu was here, and that she wore a copy of her dress from her Kahuna inauguration ceremony that was a different colored pallet swap. When Trip pointed out Hapu in the dress to the others, Dawn said, "Well as Poni Island's Kahuna, Hapu naturally has to be a judge for Contests hosted here on Poni Island. As for the fancy getup, I figure that Hapu probably wants to look good."

"Oh, speaking of judges for the contests," Serena said, "Dawn, Trip, how's your mother doing?"

"She's still on leave from her judge duties," Trip replied, "But she is recovering well, thank goodness for that."

Ash had a bit of a grim look on his face. "...I got it from Professor Kukui that, due to how Mallow, Lana, and Lillie were at the root cause of Ayane's attack on the market square on Melemele Island, he's considering barring them from entering the Alola League Conference. Or at the very least he considering barring Mallow and Lana from entering, given that Lillie really was trying to talk the girls out of acting recklessly."

Dawn nodded once in understanding, a grim but agreeing look on her face. "Given what their recklessness had wrought that day, I can see why barring at least Mallow and Lana from entering is warranted." Turning to look at Serena, Dawn went on, "But that's not important right now. What is important is that you Serena are going to be winning this Contest and getting one step closer to qualifying for the Alola Contest Grand Festival." Offering Serena a warm smile, Dawn went on, "With what all you have done to prep, I'm certain that you'll do well."

"You really think so?" Serena asked.

Smirking a bit in amusement, Dawn gave Serena a thumbs up. "No need to worry."

Serena nodded once to Dawn in thanks before an announcement over the Contest Hall's announcement system alerted the Coordinators that the Contest was starting soon, so those who hadn't entered yet ought to hurry up and get ready as things will be kicking off in about half an hour or so. Ash and the reborn trainers with Serena luck as she went to enter the contest while they went to find seats in the audience where they can watch it as Serena shows what's she's got as she competes to earn her third Tiki Necklace.

...

As it turned out, the Alolan Contest Committee was able to get Acerola to fill in for Johanna who was still on leave due to injury. The local Nurse Joy and Hapu were still able to do their judge roles nonetheless, however. And Lila was doing her job as master of ceremonies as always. That all being said, the first Alola Pokémon Contest that was held on Poni Island was able to kick off with a bang. And what a bang it was, given that the Coordinators had all pulled out all of the stops in order to show the folks in the audience just what they were made of.

To a lack of surprise on part of Ash and the reborn trainers, Serena made it past the appeals round, as did both May and Shauna. Serena did especially well as her appeals round performance featured her using her recently caught shiny Clauncher to great effect, getting a fair bit of wow factor solely from the fact that she had used a shiny Pokémon although Serena's and Clauncher's efforts in and of themselves was also wow-worthy. From what the heroes in the audience saw, things were going to be going rather smoothly for Serena.

Eventually the battle rounds were up next, although the first round of the battle round of the Contest gave the heroes some degree of worry, given that one of the battles in round one was going to pit Serena up against May. This was cause for alarm as, although Serena was good, May had been seen in the past as being able to push Serena to the absolute limit, and occasionally even overwhelm Serena and go on to win. Serena, if she were to win against May, was going to have to be careful as she performed like she had never done so before.

...

"This battle in the battle round of this contest will see Serena go up against May," Lilia announced, "Both Coordinators can use only one Pokémon each! The winner of the battle will be determined by either one Coordinator having more points left than their opponent when the five minute time limit is up, or if one Coordinator runs out of points before said time limit is up, or if one Coordinator's Pokémon is rendered unable to battle! Now then, begin!"

"Go, Beautifly!" May called out as she sent out her Beautifly to take part in the Contest's battle round.

Tossing up a Poké Ball, Serena called out, "Go, Sylveon!" Serena's Sylveon came out to battle against May's Beautifly, showing that both Coordinators were using lady-like Pokémon for this battle.

May decided to take initiative, punching forward while calling out, "Beautifly, use Gust!"

"Sylveon, dodge and use Shadow Ball!" Serena called out. Beautifly whipped up some mini gusts of wind and sent them flying right for Sylveon, but it jumped in and out of the way, avoiding all of the gusts of wind while landing gracefully every time, and all of that was as it was charging up its shadow Ball, which it then cast after the enemy onslaught ended. Beautifly wasn't hit directly, but its side was clipped a bit; that clipping, plus how May's attack failed while Serena's was a success, had ended up costing May a few points.

Gesturing forward, May called out, "Beautifly, use Tackle!"

"Sylveon, use Extrasensory!" Serena called out. Hearing Serena call for Sylveon to use Extrasensory confused some of the audience, as well as Ash, Kenny, and Trip. Dawn however was able to tell what Serena was up to, and realized that Serena was taking a bit of a risk as May was using a bug type Pokémon. Dawn could only hope that Serena is lucky enough to avoid a major fumble.

And so far, that was looking to be the case, as the Extrasensory that Sylveon was using had landed, wracking Beautifly with a painful mental assault that made it flinch and cost May some more pointed. Gesturing forward, Serena called out, "Sylveon, use Sludge Bomb!"

"Beautifly, get out of there and use Morning Sun!" May called out. Beautifly was barely able to recover from the flinching and push off of the stage floor in time to avoid the Sludge Bomb from Sylveon, rising up into the air as it used Morning sun to heal. This success on May's part cost Serena some points, although Serena was still in the lead ahead of May. Gesturing forward, May called out, "Beautifly, use Psychic!"

"Sylveon, go right through it and use Sludge Bomb!" Serena called out, surprising a number of persons in the audience. True enough, May's Beautifly cast a powerful telekenitic blast of psychic energy right at Sylvenon who charged right at the oncoming attack while conjuring up a Sludge Bomb. However and to May's surprised shock, Beautifly's Psychic had no effect on Sylveon, who was able to get off its Sludge Bomb and not only score a direct hit, but also inflict poison on Beautifly. The exchange as a result cost May a fair bit of points.

"Training your Pokémon until they can tank psychic type attacks," May said to Serena, "Not bad. Just what is your secret?"

Smirking a bit in amusement, Serena said, "I have my ways." Gesturing forward, Serena called out, "Sylveon, use Shadow Ball again!"

"Beautifly," May called out, "Use Aerial Ace!"

Sylveon was able to conjure and cast its Shadow Ball, hitting Beautifly with a clipping strike that cost May some points. But Beautifly was able to land a direct hit on Sylveon with Aerial Ace, as it's an attack that always lands on its mark. Sylveon was sent spinning in the air as it did backflips, the strike against Sylveon costing Serena some points. But while Sylveon was in the air, it was sorrounded by a mass of pinkish glowing energy, and when the energy faded, a small dark colored blur was in Sylveon's place, and landing gracefully into a pose from that spinning was Serena's shiny Zorua.

Zorua's appearance like that, plus the fact that it being a shiny Pokémon had suddenly appeared, had cost May some more points. "Hey wait, that wasn't your Sylveon at all!" May said.

Gently shaking her head, Serena said, "Nope, it was my Zorua making use of its Illusion ability!"

"Hey wait," Hapu said from the judges' seating, "Is trickery like that even allowed in Contests?"

The battle between Serena and May actually had to be put on pause while the judges pulled out a rule book for Alola Contests and scanned it. "I'm not seeing anything in here that says it's against the rules," Acerola remarked, "So I'm thinking that it's fine."

Nodding in agreement, Nurse Joy said, "I can see how some people would view it as a cheap trick as it can be used to mislead an opponent and unfairly cost said opponent some points in a Contest, but it's still a valid tactic from what I can see." After some deliberation, the judges ruled that Serena's making use of Zorua's Illusion ability to help appeal in Contests was allowed, but she was advised to not make use of the strategy again until an official ruling comes out on the matter.

With the ruling from the judges out of the way, Serena's and May's battle was able to resume. Gesturing forward, May called out, "Beautifly, use String Shot!"

"Zorua, use Extrasensory!" Serena commanded. Zorua was able to cast its Extrasensory attack and hit Beautifly, wracking its mind painfully and costing May points, but Beautifly was able to avoid flinching, and as a result went on to cast its String Shot at Zorua, landing some stickly silken threads on that slowed its movements. Serena lost some points for that, but she still had a slight lead on May, especially as Beautifly was pained by its poisoning.

But Serena's slight lead was a lead that wasn't going to last, as May called out, "Beautifly, use Silver Wind!"

"Zorua, use Shadow Ball!" Serena commanded. Due to the speed drop it suffered from String Shot, Zorua wasn't able to conjure its Shadow Ball in time to at least parry Beautifly's Silver Wind, and as such it got hit hard, which ended up costing Serena a good chunk of points as Zoriua was flipped back and skidded for a bit. "Zorua, are you okay?" Serena called out, clearly worried for her Zorua's well being.

Zorua, as it got back onto its feet hung its head low as it growled, right before raising its head up to snarl an angry cry at Beautifly, right before Zorua began to evolve on stage in the middle of the Contest battle. Zorua's form shifted and grew, wowing the audience with the display. When the glowing faded, Serena's Zorua had evolved into a Zoroark, the evolution being an impressive enough display in and of itself to cost May some points, especially as it was the evolution of a shiny Pokémon. But the Contest battle wasn't over yet, and there was still time and both girls still had some points.

But Serena's now Zoroark wowed the audience yet again with it opened its maw and spewed forth a blasting Flamethrower attack, scoring a direct hit on May's Beautifly that made it reel back and cost May points. "Wow, guys!" Ash said to the reborn trainers as they were in the audience, "Not only did Serena's Zorua evolve into Zoroark, but it learned Flamethrower!"

Dawn, as she looked to the contest battle and saw that May's Beautifly was running out of steam especially as it was pained by its poisoning again, nodded once in agreement. "Yeah, I got a feeling this is a turn around moment for Serena."

Down at the Contest battle on stage, May said, "We still aren't done here yet! Beautifly, use Aerial Ace!"

As Beautifly flew at Zoroark in a straight line, Serena said, "Well we aren't done yet either! Let's show them what we're made of, Zoroark!"

"ARK!" Zoroark cried out as, while Beautifly was rushing at it in the use of Aerial Ace, Zoroark took aim with its hands and conjured and cast a Dark Pulse that flew at and intercepted Beautifly, scoring a direct hit that made Beautifly reel back, up until it fell down onto the stage floor with a thud.

"Wow, Serena's Zoroark had also learned Dark Pulse!" Ash remarked in the audience.

Zoroark pushing Beautifly back like that cost May more points, but she still had some points left. Not that it did May any good as, while Beautifly tried getting up, it was pained by its poison again, and as a result it fell back down onto the stage, clearly out of it. "Beautifly is unable to battle!" Lila announced as the audience began to cheer, "The winner is Zoroark! Serena moves on to the next round!"

Serena was surprised that she was able to score such a win against May, and what really excited her was how her Zorua had evolved into Zoroark in the process, overcoming a type disadvantage to bring Serena an impressive win in the Alola Contest scene. May, although bemused to have lost, nonetheless congratulated Serena on her win, wishing her luck in the later rounds of that Contest. Although Serena had won, there were still a few more rounds she had to clear if she wanted to bring home another Contest win, another Tiki Necklace, another step towards the goal of qualifying for the Alola Contest Grand Festival.

But with this impressive victory over who is arguably her biggest Contest rival in Alola, Serena felt all the more confident that she'll make it.

...

The next few rounds went by quickly, and the last battle round in the contest ended up seeing Serena face off against Shauna, who now had an explanation for why her Gothita failed against Serena's Braixen that one time. Even so, Shuana still ended up going down to Serena, given that Shauna's Gothita was overwhelmed by Serena's Braixen, the REAL Serena's Braixen this time as Serena first had to prove it wasn't Zoroark making use of Illusion again. Regardless of that, Serena had still won her third Alola Pokémon Contest, and as such earned her third Tiki Necklace.

She was now only one Tiki Necklace away from qualifying for the Alola Contest Grand Festival.

The next day at the trainer school on Melemele Island, the heroes and their classmates were relaxing in class, waiting for Kukui to show up to begin the lesson. "Wow, Serena!" Mallow said, "I can't believe that you won your third Alola Contest Tiki Necklace!"

"Although the Alola Contest Committee is still deliberating on if the ploy of making use of the Illusion ability will be allowed for future Contests," Lana pointed out, "The official ruling when it comes out won't affect Serena's previous Contest wins where she used it because the Committee said those wins occurred before an official ruling, but after the official ruling comes out then all Coordinators in Alola will have to follow it."

"Well there goes one of Serena's best ploys," Kenny remarked. Turning to look at Serena, Kenny asked, "How will you do now?"

Nodding once, Serena said, "Well I still plan to win regardless, so I won't let potentially losing use of a strategy slow me down. Besides, I just need one more win before I qualify for the Alola Contest Grand Festival. I'm certain my Pokémon and I will make it."

Ash was about to speak up, but a commotion coming from outside of the school caught his attention and the attention of everyone else in the classroom. They all went outside to investigate, and to their surprise they found a group of Team Skull members fighting a group of Team Scorn members. Although the Team Skull members had a slight numbers advantage, it was just a bunch of Skull grunts, where as the Scorn grunts were backed by Captain Konishi and his Captain's Assistant with the long green hair, who Dawn had recently confirmed was that Jun'ichi fellow Shinpachi had told her and some of the others about.

Over at the battle, Konishi's Electabuzz was about to use Thunder Punch to strike a Zubat belonging to a female Team Skull grunt, this female grunt having the same hairstyle as Team Skull girl grunts tended to have but this one had vibrant green hair and she wore glasses, also she was slightly fatter than that one male Team Skull grunt who was on the heavy side of things. The plus sized female Team Skull grunt's Zubat was about to take a heavy blow, but before the attack could land, a serious and gruff male voice called out, as if to save the Day.

"Golisopod, use First Impression on Electabuzz!"

A large bipedal bug Pokémon that the students aside from the reborn trainers didn't recognize rushed Konishi's Electabuzz and struck it away with First Impression, actually knocking Electabuzz out. As the Team Scorn members looked on in confusion, the same male voice called out, "You guys got a lot of nerve trying to start stuff on Team Skull turf."

The heroes and their classmates saw it as the source of the voice, who the reborn trainers were able to identify as Team Skull Boss Guzma, came walking out onto the scene. Konichi scoffed in an annoyed tone. "Since when is this schoolyard Team Skull turf?"

"All of Alola is Team Skull turf," Guzma shot back, "And I'm fixin' to kick you bastards out."

"Aww yeah, boss Guzma is here!" one male Skull grunt cheered, "Team Scorn is screwed now! No one can stand up to the boss in a battle!"

The bug Pokémon that was at Guzma's command, which the reborn trainers identified as a Golisopod, cried out challengingly at the members of Team Scorn. Again, Konishi scoffed bitterly. "If you're as strong as your peons here are boasting, then you could have taken me head on rather than launch a sneak attack."

"Oh, what's this now?" Guzma said, a hint of wry and mildly sarcastic amusement in his tone, "Team Scorn is gonna lecture someone on not being cowardly? You lil' kids oughta get on out of here before I lose my cool and show you what it's like to face destruction in human form."

By the point Guzma had threatened Konishi and his fellows, they were very clearly on the losing end of the fight there anyway. At Konishi's orders, Team Scorn called back what Pokémon that they had out and withdrew, making things there a win for Team Skull. After Team Scorn had taken off and were out of sight, Guzma let out a sigh of relief, not that his followers saw it as they saw only his back as they cheered for him. As Guzma turned to face his followers, the heroes and their classmates all came running out to greet Team Skull.

"Thanks for fighting Team Scorn off," Dawn said to Guzma, "My classmates and I would have joined in to help your fellows here, but you showing up had made that redundant."

Guzma arched a wry eyebrow at Dawn. "...You're the girl who helped pull five of my guys out of danger after that bitch in Team Scorn freaked out and went on a rampage that wrecked the market square." Pointing at the fat girl Skull grunt with the green hair and glasses, Guzma said, "Luna here was one of the five that you and two of your buddies had rescued."

"Oh yeah, now I remember this particular girl from Team Skull," Kenny said as he turned to look at the now identified Luna, "Wait, how is it you're up and active already? If I recall correctly, you were among those more heavily hurt in the attack."

"As it turned out, most of the damage was just to my fat," Luna replied, "Some stitches, required rest period, and getting the stitches taken out was all that was needed to get me back out in the field to defend Team Skull turf from those idiots in Team Scorn." Gesturing to Kenny, Luna went on, "By the way, you're Kenny Harris of Kenny Harris Studios, right?"

Nodding once, Kenny said, "I am. Why do you ask?"

"Dude, we in Team Skull love your movies," Guzma said, "That Paul's Privates one was particularly hilarious!"

"Well thank you," Kenny said, "And we're on a bit of a hiatus right now as we don't have a script for the next movie in the works at the mome-"

"Long time no see, Guzma."

Kenny was cut off when he and everyone else heard Kukui's voice call out, then turned to see Kukui himself come jogging up to the scene. Guzma, arching a wry eyebrow, turned to look at Kukui. "...Right back at you, Kukui." Guzma did a quick looking up and down of Kukui, got a general idea of what Kukui is up to now. "I see that you're a Professor and school teacher now."

"And you're the head of Team Skull," Kukui said, his tone even. Kukui looked to the scene, saw who all was there, and got a feeling what had happened. "...You and some of your own here helped to fend off Team Scorn just now, huh?"

"They're idiots whose chops I have to bust," Guzma remarked, "So I ain't got the time right now to bust yours." Turning around to leave, Guzma said as he left with his grunts, "I heard about that League you wanna establish in the news. I suggest that you take measures to protect it from Team Scorn throwing a hissyfit." With that last word, Guzma and his follwers had taken off, leaving Kukui and the students behind.

...

"Yeah, Guzma and I have a history," Kukui said, "I won't bore you kids with the details, so the tldr here is that Guzma and I used to be students under Hala, but Guzma grew disillusioned with Hala's ways and left to find strength on his own."

"So Guzma is someone we ought to worry about," Sophocles said.

Kukui closed his eyes, gave the look of being deep in thought. "...Not so much as I would have otherwise said. I think the threat of Team Scorn unifying everyone else in Alola has made even Guzma more willing to be a team player."

"We also got it from Plumeria that Guzma is working on training the members of Team Skull due to the Team Scorn threat," Dawn pointed out.

Looking to Kukui, Lillie asked, "You don't think that Guzma may try to enter the Alola League Conference, do you Professor Kukui? He seems kind of scary."

Shrugging, Kukui said, "I don't know. If what he said about being too busy to bust my chops is accurate, then he's prioritizing focus on prepping to deal with Team Scorn. If that holds true, then he most likely won't enter. But we have to wait and see. Oh, before I forget, I've decided that I won't be barring anyone from entering the Alola League Conference." Everyone in the class, Lana and Mallow in particular, let out sighs of relief. The heroes and their classmates all felt that things were going to be alright, and that there wouldn't be any nasty surprises in the future just around the corner.

...No nasty surprises, but pleasant ones would be fine.

(Icirrus City, Unova)

Over at the home of Icirrus City gym leader Brycen, he and Cilan were sitting in a home movie theater, marathoning the Kenny Harris Studios movies. They had finished watching the latest movie, after which Cilan turned to face Brycen. "I had no idea that Kenny has gotten into the film making business."

"And for an amateur level movie studio, the production level is rather good," Brycen said, "I heard that the new actress out of Kanto, Sabrina, got a bump in popularity due to her starring in a Kenny Harris Studios movie." Brycen held a hand to his chin, wore a look of deep consideration on his face. "Truly Kenny here has the potential to become one of the greats in the film making industry."

"Your actor's instincts is acting up, huh?" Cilan asked.

Brycen nodded once in the affirmative. "I cannot leave Icirrus City due to my duties as gym leader, but you Cilan have more freedom as you and your brothers join run the gym you manage. I cannot make you, but I would ask that you go seek out Kenny and learn what you can about his film studio."

"It would be nice to see an old friend again," Cilan remarked, "And I may even get lucky and score a role in Kenny's next movie. Imagine it, me in a role in a movie out of a film studio!" With a curious look of mild concern on his face, Cilan added, "Also, I wanna ask Dawn if she's okay, because she had been super fat in the first movie, then was thin again in the second movie, then she got super fat in the latest movie. Rapid weight gain and weight loss, especially back to back like that, cannot be good for one's health."

"I'm pretty sure that she just wore a fat suit for those roles," Brycen remarked.

END, CHAPTER TWO-HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE

Author's notes;

This chapter sees Serena win her third Alola Contest Tiki Necklace, meaning she's one away from qualifying for the Grand Festival. Additionally, her shiny Zorua evolves into Zoroark and picks up how to use both Dark Pulse and Flamethrower, but Serena's strategy involving making use of the Illusion ability is exposed, and the judges are actually deliberating right now if using Illusion will be allowed for future contests. Aside from that, the heroes when they're next at school hear a commotion outside, and they go to investigate and see Team Skull fighting off Team Scorn.

A blow from Konishi's Electabuzz is about to hit a Zubat belonging to a fat girl Skull grunt, but then ya boi Guzma swoops in and saves the day, fending off Konishi's Electabuzz and basically telling Team Scorn to get lost. After Team Scorn leaves and Guzma has a brief exchange with Kukui, Team Skull takes off, and the heroes all get the feeling that, while still bad, Team Skull is still on their side as all of Alola is united against the threat that Team Scorn poses. There's also how Kukui said that no-one will be barred from entering the Alola League Conference.

Meanwhile in Unova, Brycen and Cilan marathon the Kenny Harris Studios movies, and Brycen essentially tasks Cilan with seeking Kenny out in Alola to learn more about his movie studio. Cilan's soon to come arrival in Alola will kick off one of Kenny's most ambitious movies yet out of his movie studio, a movie that will be (very loosely) based off of a true story. Oh, and Iris is still in Alola because despite how she had been asked not to, she still intends to confront Ideku about him having caught Zekrom and not tell anyone about it until revealing it. Until then, take care.
