Chapter Two-hundred and thirty-five: Shenanigans before the Alola League Conference, part three
Finally, and at long last, it was the big day. The day in which many a persons would be competing against one another to prove themselves the best, to see who among their exalted number was the one who stood about the rest. It was a day that would go down in the history of the Alola region, a competition that would go down in the history of the Alola region. People from all over Alola turned out by the droves to watch the competition, to see who it was that would end up bringing home the glory that was up for grabs on this day.
The glory of being dubbed as Alola's first ever Contest Kahuna.
All of the heroes and their classmates turned out to watch the Contest, to be there to cheer on their classmate Serena as she fought her hardest in her upcoming bid to become the Coordinator in Alola to make history. "Wow, it's pretty amazing that you made it this far, Serena," Mallow said, "To think you have a shot at being the first to become a Contest Kahuna!"
"Yeah, it's really something," Ash said, "Heck, her own Pokémon are so excited that her Clauncher even evolved after practice last night!" True to form, Serena called out her now Clawitzer to show her friends. It was still shiny as it was as a Clauncher, and judging by how it tried reaching for the snack that Lana was eating, it still had its well known level of appetite. Smiling gently, Lana took out an extra of the snack she had and offered it to Serena's shiny Clawitzer, who gobbled it up as Lana first tried asking Serena if her giving Clawitzer a snack was okay.
Dawn, as she smiled at the pre-competition shenanigans, turned to look at Serena. "...You have certainly come a long way, Serena. And now you're set to compete on the biggest Contest stage Alola has to offer. Everything you've done thus far is by your own merit, and you couldn't be more ready for today, even if you had tried. Trust me when I say that you got this."
"We'll be there to cheer you up if you fail," Mallow said, "As well as be the first to celebrate you if you succeed. Regardless, know that all of us are going to be there for you today."
Serena nodded once in acknowledgement. "Thanks, girls." Serena then recalled her shiny Clawitzer before going on, "It's not just me who is as ready as possible for today. All of my Pokémon are in peak form."
Dawn nodded once in acknowledgement to that; Serena certainly has come a long way from the girl she was when Dawn first met her in Kalos. Serena's team of Pokémon has also come a long way too; originally having only a Fennekin, Serena now has a Braixen who evolved from said Fennekin, a Pangoro, a Sylveon, a Zoroark, a Trevenant, and a Clawitzer, with the last of those three all being shiny. Serena certainly had quite the team for when it comes to acting and appealing on stage, and with what all Serena has cultivated, both in Alolan Contests and Kalosian Showcases, she was at the peak of being ready.
Granted, it still wasn't going to be an easy cakewalk in the park for Serena. She was going to be facing some rather stiff competition in the Alola Contest Grand Festival. Most prominent was May, Ash's traveling companion from his journey in the Hoenn region. May had actually been the first Coordinator to qualify for the Alola Contest Grand Festival, a testament to the fact that she simply has more experience and practice in performance competitions such as Contests, compared to the level of such experience that Serena has. Shauna also had qualified, and she's no slouch either in performing for an audience while acting on stage.
As a matter of fact, Serena and her classmates all saw it as Shauna, who was accompanied by Trevor and Tierno, entered the Alola Contest Grand Festival. Following up from that was them seeing May enter the Alola Contest Grand Festival. May was accompanied by her little brother Max, and May and Max were followed by Clemont and Bonnie, although it was rather clear Clemont was there to chaperone Bonnie who was there mainly to accompany Max. Serena knew that if she wanted to win the Alola Contest Grand Festival and become the first ever Contest Kahuna, then overcoming Shauna and (especially) May was going to be something of a requirement that she'd have to accomplish.
But Serena was confident that she was going to win it or, barring that, put up such an effort that her opponent that's able to take her out will be too winded by the effort to continue afterwards. This was Serena's big chance to win and get her name put down in the history books as a performer of note. By no means was she going to flop here, not when so many people were watching, would be watching. Serena intended for her performing here at the Alola Contest Grand Festival today to be so great that people were going to remember her as a big name in the performing scene.
Serena herself had already entered, and when the announcement over the Contest Hall intercom system went out calling for all Coordinators to get ready to perform in the Grand Festival, Serena separated from the rest of the group to go get ready. Although she was nervous, Serena was also excited. Today was going to be the day that she was going to achieve greatness, and she intended to fight tooth and nail to prove herself as better than her peers. Within short order, all of the Coordinators entered into the Alola Contest Grand Festival were ready to perform, which meant only one thing, really.
That the first ever Alola Contest Grand Festival was ready to kick off.
The performance rounds were spectacular, seeing each Coordinator strut their stuff to the best of their abilities. Many of the Coordinators' performances wouldn't be out of place in the Showcases in the Kalos region, and after the Alola Contest Grand Festival, Kalos Showcase expert Palermo was quoted as saying that many of those who had competed in the first Alola Contest Grand Festival had what it took to take part in the Showcases in Kalos. But that business wouldn't come about until AFTER the Alola Contest Grand Festival came to a close, and the first Contest Kahuna was named.
As for the Alola Contest Grand Festival itself, it wowed from start to finish. After the amazingly spectacular performance round, the heroes and their classmates in the audience saw it that Serena made it to the battle round, as did Shauna and May. This meant that Serena was going to have to worry about her two biggest rivals in the Contest scene in Alola as they went through the rounds to see which two Coordinators would fight one another in the end for the glory of winning the honor of becoming Alola's first ever Contest Kahuna.
To Serena's relief, she wasn't going to have to fight May and Shauna one at a time over the course of things, given that Shauna and May were pared to battle each other in the first round of the battle round. The battle between Shauna and May was rather handily won by May, as she was lucky to send out her Glaceon against Shauna who chose to send out her Farfetch'd. The luck of holding the type advantage was on May's side, and it paid off splendidly as Glaceon won that round by knocking Farfetch'd out in battle out right; knocking out an opponent in a Contest's battle round WAS a viable win condition, after all.
As for Serena, she kept advancing through the rounds herself, winning against opponent after opponent. Eventually, Serena made it to the final round, but she saw that she would be facing May there. May, Serena's greatest rival in the Contest scene, who had scored many wins against Serena in the past, was the last obstacle that she had to overcome if she had wanted to win and become Alola's first ever Contest Kahuna. Serena was more nervous than ever before, but at the same time she was also more excited than ever before.
It would be a glorious finish indeed, a culmination of their rivalry, a way to settle things once and for all.
...
Everyone in the audience watched on as Serena and May faced one another on stage in the last battle of the battle round of the Alola Contest Grand Festival. Lila did her bit as the Master of Ceremonies, and the three judges were ready to watch on. As a side note, Dawn and Trip were both relieved to see it that their mom Johanna was recovered just in time to resume judge duties, and in fact the Alola Contest Grand Festival was the first Contest Johanna was able to judge for since she had finished up her recovery from her injury from when Ayane was outed and went on a hissy-fit.
After Lila did her bit, Serena and May sent out their respective Pokémon. "Go, Briaxen!" Serena called out.
"Go, Blaziken!" May announced, sending her Blaziken out against Serena's Braixen. It was oddly fitting, both girls using their respective first Pokémon here, on the final stage of their ultimate goal. Gesturing forward, May called out, "Blaziken, use Overheat!"
"Braixen, dodge and use Psybeam!" Serena called out.
Acting skillfully, Braixen was able to dodge the Overheat from Blaziken and fire off a Psybeam and May actually lost a few points because of that. However, as Braixen's Psybeam was charging up, May called out, "Blaziken, use Sky Uppercut!"
Blaziken rushed in and threw an uppercut at Braixen. As a result, both Pokémon were hit by the attacks aimed at them, both Serena and May lost points. Braixen was a bit winded from the staggering Sky Uppercut, but things seemed to be balanced out because Blaziken took that Psybeam to the right eye, making the already super effective attack even more painful. Blaziken was covering its hurt eye with its right hand while Braixen held its arms over its stomach as it struggled to catch its breath after the brutal exchange of attacks.
"Braixen, use Flamethrower!" Serena ordered.
"Blaziken, use Flamethrower!" May commanded.
The two Pokémon both used Flamethrower, and both Flamethrowers ended up colliding into one another, causing a huge bursting explosion of power. Apparently, using flamethrower had helped to soothe Braixen's bruised stomach some, given that Serena saw it lower its arms from its stomach. "Braixen, use Psybeam!" Serena called out, "Straight ahead!"
Braixen conjured and cast another Psybeam, clipping Blaziken on the shoulder and making it flinch in pain. When the dust settled and it was seen that Blaziken was reeling back, May lost a few more points. But May, running on her overall greater amount of experience compared to Serena, wasn't going to falter to that business. And neither would Blaziken. Gesturing forward, May said, "Blaziken, rush in with Quick Attack! Then blast Braixen with Overheat!"
Running on the enhanced speed of Quick Attack, Blaziken rushed in while charging up an Overheat. Then upon getting within point blank range, Blaziken blasted Braixen with Overheat, sending it flying up into the air and costing Serena a good chunk of points. Serena lost a further amount of points when Braixen fell onto the stage floor, hitting it hard. "Braixen!" Serena called out, clearly worried for her Braixen's well-being, "Are you okay?!"
Gesturing forward, May called out, "Blaziken, use Flamethrower!"
Braixen, as it tried propping itself up, saw that Blaziken was charging up a Flamethrower attack while Braixen itself laid helpless on the stage. Braixen did not want to go down here, not when things were so close to let Serena achieve a great accomplishment. With a burst of defiant power, Braixen held its right hand forward as said hand glowed with psychic power, same as Braizen's eyes. The same psychic power surrounded Blaziken's feet, and Braixen made a pulling gesture, tripping Blaziken up and making it fall over onto its back in a move that cost May some of her points as the Flamethrower that was being prepped fizzled out.
"Serena's Braixen just learned Psychic!" Ash in the audience remarked, "That's amazing!" The rest of the classmates agreed, and Dawn was thinking how Serena's Braixen having both Psybeam and Psychic ought to help out against Blaziken, a partial fighting type with its other type not helping it resist psychic attacks.
Down on the stage, Braixen used Psychic again, only this time to push itself up, doing do hard enough that it went flying into the air, but it flew up while gracefully spinning before striking a pose midair, further costing May some points. While Braixen still had an aerial advantage and Blaziken was still trying to get up off of its back, Serena called out, "Braixen, use Psybeam!"
"Blaziken, counter with Flamethrower!" May called out.
Both Pokémon fired their attacks at one another, creating another explosion. Braixen was thrown back but it was able to use Psychic to keep itself steady enough to land gracefully. As for Blaziken, it did a sort of break dance-esque spinning move on its back to right itself up and push itself back into standing up. Both Braixen and Blaziken were getting exhausted, and Dawn from where she sat in the audience could tell that the next attacks called would end the battle between Serena and May, as both of the Pokémon that were out looked liable to going down to one more solid attack each.
It wasn't just Braixen and Blaziken who were getting to their limits; Serena and May were also getting to their own limits. "You... you really are one of the greatest Coordinators I ever had to compete against," May said, the sheer excitement of her match against Serena making her exhausted.
Serena nodded once in agreement. "I was going to say the same thing about you."
Punching the air before her, May said, "But Blaziken and I aren't done yet! We're both more than ready to go on until the last!" Blaziken then cried out to show that it was in agreement with its trainer.
"It's not just you and Blaziken who are far from finished!" Serena responded, "Braixen and I still have more in the tank!" Braixen cried out as well, showing that it was in agreement with Serena. In fact, Braixen continued to cry out until it suddenly began glowing a fierce, white, brilliant light. Everyone watching was stunned to see it that Serena's Braixen was actually evolving during the final battle round in Alola's first ever Contest Grand Festival. Braixen's glowing form shifted and grew as the process of evolution worked its wondrous magic.
Within short order, the evolution was done, and when it finished everyone saw it that Serena's Braixen had evolved into Delphox, crying out skyward as embers of energy danced around it in a swirl. "Serena's Braixen had evolved into Delphox!" Kenny in the audience said, "Oh man, that's gotta be good to help Serena with winning against May, right?"
Nodding once in confirmation, Dawn said, "The newfound type advantage-"
*BUZZ* *BUZZ*
Dawn was cut off when the buzzer signifying the end of the round suddenly went off. Everyone else was also confused, and Serena was wondering what called for the end of her fated match against May. Neither Delphox or Blaziken were knocked out, and looking up at the monitor Serena saw that there was still some time left for the round, albeit a little under the halfway mark. Serena also saw that she still had some points left in her point gauge, and May...
...Had a completely empty point gauge.
"Contestant May has run out of points!" Lila announced as the audience already began to cheer for the soon to be announced winner, "As such, the winner of Alola's first Contest Grand Festival, and the first Contest Kahuna in Alola history, is Serena!"
Serena, despite having won, was in shock; she... she actually did it. Serena actually did it! She won the Alola Contest Grand Festival! As it turned out, her Braixen evolving into Delphox was enough of a wondrous sight to cost May the rest of her points, as it was something on Serena's side that wowed the audience. Serena, once the realization of what was going on had hit her, began to tear up, overwhelmed by the emotions she was feeling as a result of having risen above all opposition that was in her way, and had successfully achieve a major, monumental achievement.
In the award ceremony, Serena was presented with a trophy for winning, as well as given a sash that said 'Contest Kahuna'. Serena was also awarded a special Tiki Necklace for having won the Alola Contest Grand Festival. May, although she was bummed to have lost, covered up said feelings because she knew she had to be a good sport and congratulate Serena for winning. After the Grand Festival, the heroes and their peers all went to Mallow's family's restaurant, where Mallow and her folks treated everyone to a big special meal to celebrate Serena having won the Alola Contest Grand Festival.
May asked if she and Max could come, May because she admittedly wanted to try more of the cooking that Mallow's family's restaurant had to offer, and Max because May wanted him to eat more as he's still skinny. They were invited to come along, as were Clemont and Bonnie. To the surprise of the heroes, Cilan and Iris were also there, as neither of them actually left Alola yet. It was a big ol' party with loads and loads of friends, and all of them were there to celebrate and congratulate Serena on her momentous achievement, an achievement that to Coordinators was what winning a League Conference was to trainers.
During the party at Mallow's family's restaurant, May when she saw Lana told her that she was aware of what Lana was going through, but still threatened Lana into not trying to push a similar deal onto Max. Kenny assured May that Lana was beginning the recovery that she needed, and at minimum wouldn't do as May was fretting over. There were also stories exchanged, and both Cilan and Iris were surprised to hear what Kenny and his named Politoed Kermit did to help Mallow's folks get the word out that they needed to hire more people to work at the restaurant.
While the heroes partied and celebrated Serena's impressive accomplishment, Cilan and Iris learned more about what all awesome Pokémon that Ash and the reborn trainers had gotten. Iris in particular was blown away by all of the awesome dragon Pokémon that the heroes had, and that actually reminded Dawn about the favor she wanted to ask Iris to do for her. "Are you planning to head to Blackthorn City in the Johto region soon?" Dawn asked.
"I was planning to go there after the Alola League Conference," Iris confirmed, "I wanna stay to watch. I don't need to enter, I'm already the Champion of Unova. But after the Alola League Conference, I plan to head straight to Blackthorn City to see how Clair's doing."
Dawn nodded once before taking out and handing to Iris the scale she got when she and a few of the girls were in mysterious mist a while ago. "Give this scale to Clair for me," Dawn said, "And tell her that her Druddigon misses her." Dawn, backed up by Mallow, proceeded to tell the tale of what went on while they were in the mist, how they encountered spirits of the departed, and how Dawn even battled Clair's departed shiny Druddigon. The scale appeared after the mist faded, and shortly after that Dawn had caught her Shaymin Shouta.
As Iris accepted both the scale and the task, Cilan said, "Hey wait, shouldn't this be a party that Ideku was invited to as well? How come he's not here?"
"I actually offered him an invite," Kenny began, "But he said he'd rather not come as a party to celebrate the result of the Alola Contest Grand Festival would remind him of how he had been tricked by Ayane, and for as long as she had been doing it."
The overall mood dropped a bit, reminding everyone of how Ideku's girlfriend Ochaco was actually Boss's Assistant Ayane of Team Scorn, having been leading Ideku along for so long. A good number of the guys could understand that Ideku would probably wanna keep to himself for today. Even Iris refrained from talking smack about the roaming trainer from Johto, understanding that some cases... simply were not to be messed with. The mood recovered soon after that, and the party resumed in full to continue ringing in Serena as Alola's first Contest Kahuna.
During the party, it was Mallow who noticed it as two women and a man dressed in similar uniforms came into the restaurant. "Hey, you three work at the Malasada Shop," Mallow said, drawing everyone's attention to the three similarly dressed persons.
Nodding once, the first woman, who had orange-reddish hair in a smooth and neat bobcut, said, "Yeah, we're from the Malasada Shop. We're here looking for Serena."
"Is there something you want with me?" Serena asked, speaking up and getting the attention of the Malasada Shop employees.
"Yeah, and although we were wanting to congratulate you on winning Alola's first ever Contest Grand Festival and becoming the first Contest Kahuna in Alola history," the man of the group began, "We wish that it wasn't under circumstances like what our manager had forced onto us."
"What do you mean?" Ash asked as he stood up.
"Basically," the second woman of the group, who had long dishwater blonde hair in a straight hime cut, began to explain, "Our manager wants to shoot a number of commercials to air on TV to advertise the Malasada Shop, and she wants Serena to star in said commercials. Our manager believes that the Malasada Shop will see much better sales if Alola's first Contest Kahuna were to help with advertising."
"So your manager lady just wants to hitch the Malasada Shop's name onto Serena's rising star is what you're saying," Dawn surmised.
Nodding once in the affirmative, the second woman replied, "Essentially, yeah." Holding up a bag from the Malasada Shop, the second woman went on, "We were even sent with some Malasadas to give to Serena, in the hopes of enticing her into accepting."
"At... the very least," Serena said as she accepted the bag, "This is something my mom will have to be brought in on."
"Fair enough," the first woman said as she handed Serena a business card for the Malasada Shop, "Again, sorry we came under the circumstances involved."
"We really did want to congratulate you on becoming the first Contest Kahuna without anything attached," the man of the trio said, "But our manager is seeing this as an opportunity to bump up sales. She even came up with another title for you to help you with attracting customers to the Malasada Shop, saying you can be the 'Malasada Maiden' as she puts it."
Smirking a bit in amusement, Kenny said, "Well at least the title has alliterative appeal."
After the Malasada Shop employees took off, Lana as Serena sat the Malasadas down said, "Are you gonna do it?"
"Like I said," Serena replied, "I'm going to at a minimum want to get my mom in on this to help me out. Maybe we ought to get a lawyer as well."
Dawn nodded in approval. "Smart play, Serena." The heroes then dug into the Malasadas, and they really were quite good. Even Serena liked them, and it did help her think about the offer to star in commercials to help advertise the Malasada Shop. There was also how she'd be dubbed as the 'Malasada Maiden', another title to go along with how she's now a Contest Kahuna. Serena was actually rather excited; she had achieved a major big dream, and it was opening up opportunities for her that would not have been available otherwise.
Serena couldn't help but wonder what was in store for her in the future.
"So we attack the Alola League Conference when, exactly?"
"When Boss's Assistant Ayane gets the cue from the boss."
Over at the hidden Team Scorn base in Alola, Admin Mage was meeting with the four Captains under his command in the Scarf Sector, as well as his Admin's Assistant Aya and the Captain's Assistants of all of the Captains. Additionally, Captains Zed and James were there, as were Kenji, Jessie, and Meowth. Even Faba, booted from the Aether Foundation and taken in by Team Scorn, was there. The whole of the command structure that Team Scorn had in the Alola region was gathered for a meeting to discuss plans for the upcoming Alola League Conference, and it was Yuichi who asked when they planned to attack the Alola League Conference.
After Mage had answered Yuichi's inquiry, Jessie held up a hand. "What exactly will the attack entail, Admin Mage?"
"I don't have a lot of details as Boss's Assistant Ayane hasn't gotten an update from the boss yet," Mage said, "We'll know the finer details when Ayane gets them. But from what I'm feeling, it'll be a general by the book type of outing where we cause chaos, fight the would-be heroes, maybe steal some stuff of value. You know, what all we'd usually do anyway."
"You mention of the boss," Faba began, getting Mage's attention, "So Team Scorn does have an actual boss, and it's not a made up entity that the Team Scorn higher ups merely tells the rank and file is someone who exists."
Nodding once, Mage said, "Yes Faba, Team Scorn does in fact have an actual person leading as the boss of the whole show. Although I can't blame you for thinking that the boss of Team Scorn is but a fairy tale that the higher ups merely claims exists, a good number of the rank and file also suspect that there's no actual boss and that us higher ups are merely telling a story."
Giving off a self-amused hum of a chuckle, Zed said, "Only a fool would think that the boss of Team Scorn is a made up entity that doesn't actually exist."
"Zed, you also at one point believed that the boss of Team Scorn didn't actually exist," Bulat pointed out dryly, drawing some chuckles from some of the others at the meeting.
Getting the rest of the meeting to settle down, Mage said, "Yes yes, now calm down everyone. We all need to be ready to spring into action at a moment's notice, as we can get the cue to attack at any time from Ayane."
"Do we at least have details on the area of where we'll be carrying out this attack?" James asked.
Mage nodded once in the affirmative. "I'm glad one of you brought that up." Mage then handed out printed sheets detailing a plan of attack. "This is a map of the general area," Mage began, "Note how there's a few spots that are numbered. When we get the cue that we're going to start carrying out the attack, go to the spot that is designated based on the number that you are given and wait there. Then when you get the cue to attack over the comm devices, well..." Gesturing to everyone at the meeting, Mage said, "...That'll be your cue to attack."
Holding up a paw, Meowth asked, "Is there anything that we ought to be worried about?"
Letting out a breath, Mage said, "Actually, yeah. A number of the trainers that Team Scorn has dossiers on will be at the Alola League Conference, both attending as spectators and competing in the tournament itself as competitors. Dealing with so many dangerous and powerful trainers will be difficult for Team Scorn, especially given how Ayane had Reshiram stripped from her. We're going to have to be ready to mobilize virtually the whole of Team Scorn that's in Alola right now to be ready to attack the League Conference if we're to stand a chance of doing as much as possible."
The gathered members of Team Scorn knew that the planned attack was going to be very challenging, perhaps the biggest challenge that the Scarf Sector had ever taken part in thus far. But the Alola region had to be made aware of the fact that Team Scorn, simply put, is not to be trifled with, not to be argued with. Some of those who were present weren't exactly entirely sure of their odds at coming out on top here, but even so they would do as much as they could, as quickly as they could, so as to leave a mark in the pages of Alolan history that the region will never forget.
END, CHAPTER TWO-HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FIVE
Author's notes;
This chapter sees the conclusion of the Alola Contest sub-arc, and it's Serena who stands at the top as the winner and first ever Contest Kahuna after a hard fought match against May. The heroes and their classmates even have a celebratory party at Mallow's family's restaurant, where they also learn that Cilan and Iris are still in the Alola region for some odd reason. Also, some employees from the Malasada Shop show up to ask Serena if she'd be interested in starring in a series of commercials to advertise the Malasada Shop. This will actually come up in multiple ways over the course of the story.
However, not everything is sunshine and rainbows and fluffy little puppy Pokémon. Over at the Legion of Doom-err, I mean the secret Team Scorn base in Alola- Admin Mage is meeting with the rest of the Scarf Sector command structure, as well as James, Jessie, Meowth, Zed, Kenji, and the recently added Faba, to discuss the plan of attack Team Scorn has for the Alola League Conference. According to Mage, he believes that it'll be a by the book attack, but they still have to wait until Ayane is able to get some more details from the boss, who does in fact exist as an actual person.
Yes, there is in fact an actual, corporeal, physical, real person who is the boss of Team Scorn; he's not an imaginary boogeyman like what some members of Team Scorn in-story had been led to believe for one reason or another. The boss of Team Scorn is a real person, and he's going to make a physical appearance in-story before the Alola saga is over. Well anyway, the next few chapters will see some Alola League Conference action, and things will be getting heated up, especially as there's going to be a massive change in roster for who makes it past the battle royal. Until then, take care.
