Sam saw faces of people she didn't know in her dreams. Kids her age, younger and older. Adults, and the thing that was the same was that they were all wearing strange clothes. She couldn't find her way to class in this dream. The thing was, it wasn't her school in Bournemouth, it was like an old UNESCO site. Some kind of ancient place, but it wasn't in disrepair, it was being used, it was lived in.
She woke up, disoriented. It was like yesterday when she had the visions she couldn't explain. To everyone else it looked like a fainting spell…a spell. What was it that was just outside of her memory? It had something to do with that building she kept thinking about. She looked at the clock and it glowed red and told her it was just a little past three. There was no other light in her part of the suite. She got the pull out sofa that had a great view of the fields that seemed to be all around. This was a rural section of the country and the people were so backward, she thought. Backward, but at least they had electricity… What was she trying to remember?
She got her phone out and searched for images of castles in Scotland. They were all wrong, sturdy and strong and not spindly like she saw in her dream. She looked for old drawings of what the castles that were in ruins now looked like in the past. After scrolling for way too long, she plugged her phone back in to charge. She looked at her phone again…what was it she was trying to remember?
"Sam, Do you want to go down to breakfast?" Jack asked. He was showered and shaved and hungry. Sam was under the covers.
"I guess so, but I didn't sleep well last night. Did you?" Sam asked.
"I slept great," Jack said. "Let's get you some breakfast and I'm sure you will feel better. Fresh air will do you great."
Sam got dressed and went downstairs to meet her father. The tiny elevator door opened and a helpful elevator operator held it open for her.
"Beautiful weather we're having," he said.
"I guess," Sam said. She didn't remember an elevator operator when they checked in yesterday.
"You should try these eggs," Jack said as Sam joined him at the table with her glass of juice and a piece of toast.
"No thanks," Sam said. "I can't handle that." After a few bites in silence, she said, "Isn't it weird that they have an elevator operator in a little place like this?"
"What elevator operator?" Jack asked.
"The little guy in the elevator?" Sam said.
"I didn't see anyone in the elevator," Jack said.
"You went down right before me," Sam said. She was concerned and confused.
"Calm down," Jack said. Maybe he just took a break.
After breakfast, there was no little old man in the elevator. Sam asked at the front desk and they just stared at her. There was no little man working in the elevator, and hadn't been for 70 years.
