*kicks door down* I'm back! You miss me? No? Fair enough. Well, exams over (Yay!) may have failed (no!) but hey over now so what can you do. Write more chapters I hear you say? Well that's exactly what I'm going to do! So so sorry for the wait but I hope this chapter will make up for it. Thank you all for sticking with me so far and during the break! You are all amazing! And to our new family members, welcome! You have now become apart of something you cannot go back from, but if you like chaos then great! Anyways I'll shut up now and get on with the chapter. Have fun and enjoy!
The Avengers looked at the young boy before them with pity. The boy who, despite refusing to tell them his age or anything about himself, could not be any older than 16. The boy who had clearly been through and seen too much; more than any adult should ever see in a lifetime, let alone mid-teens.
He looked ready to give up, and honestly, the Avengers couldn't find a way to fight him on that anymore. No matter what they did or how hard they tried, nothing seemed to work.
Even though Jason wouldn't tell them the reason for why he was so certain their attempts would not work, they found it hard not to believe him. While they felt they couldn't give in just yet, they decided they had had enough for now.
Jason looked especially pale at the moment, and exhausted, swaying slightly on his feet.
"Jason, why don't you go and get some rest? You've had a hard day," suggested Bruce, smiling at him softly.
Jason blinked to regain his focus. He looked at them before nodding and slowly heading for the door, his balance rocking slightly as he tried to walk. Natasha stepped forward and grabbed his arm to steady him, sending him a comforting smile, then proceeded to help guide him out of the room.
Silence hovered as they left. Clint sank into a nearby chair, defeated. Tony inhaled deeply, trying to act completely calm, like this wasn't bothering him as much as it was. They barely knew these kids. In fact, they were highly dangerous and basically suspected of terrorism. So why is this hurting so much?
"I need to hit something," stated Clint suddenly. He got to his feet and left the room without another word.
They watched him go before following in his lead, barely speaking as one after another, each Avenger existed the lab.
They couldn't think about this anymore. There was just so much going on. They needed a minute to figure everything out, think of what they could do. Where do we go from here?
...
About an hour later, Steve, Bruce, Tony, Nat and Clint had placed themselves in the living area. Tony was at the bar, Natasha was leaning against the giant windows leading out into the balcony/helicopter landing pad, staring out absentmindedly, and the others sat on the sofa.
It was dark outside by this stage, and the night was peaceful. Yet there was still something unnerving, like it was the calm before the storm.
"So, this is it?" Clint asked, numbly. "We're not doing anything else?"
"There's nothing else we can do," muttered Bruce, sighing. "I can't even begin to understand what is happening."
"This feels so much bigger than us," said Steve, hands locked together as he looked on in thought. "Bigger than anything we've dealt with before."
"We've dealt with aliens and psychotic robots, Steve. That's pretty big in and of itself. Plus, we've had experience with stuff similar to this before, what with Hydra and the Red room," added Tony, pouring himself a scotch.
"No, this feels different," argued Steve, shaking his head. "It feels as though, there's something much deeper going on. Something we don't understand."
"I agree," voiced Natasha. "These kids, they're not normal. Nothing about this is normal, even for us. This power that they have, that their organisation has, it seems so unreal, and I feel like we've barely scratched the surface in learning about what they can do."
"How powerful do you think they really are?" asked Clint, warily, furrowing his eyebrows.
Before she could answer, a notification sounded. They looked over to Tony as he pulled out his phone. He frowned at it before his eyes widened and he hurriedly began typing into his phone.
The others exchanged looks. "Uh, Tony?" started Clint before Tony held out a hand, silencing him.
"This doesn't make any sense," muttered Tony, pulling up holograms and flicking through them.
"What doesn't make any sense?" asked Natasha. No answer. Steve stepped towards Tony, frowning.
"Tony," he said loudly, finally grasping his attention. "What is going on?"
"It's Percy," he explained.
They all frowned in confusion, worry creeping in. "What do you mean?" asked Bruce, slowly standing up.
"I just received a notification from the motion detectors and security I have in place to let me know anytime someone enters or leaves the med bay. When I pulled up the cameras to check who it was, no one was there," rambled Tony, still aggressively typing and flicking through different files.
"What do you mean, 'no one was there'," asked Clint, still confused.
"I mean Percy is not in his room," he said, darkly. "He's gone."
Suddenly, the room plunged into darkness.
...
"Tony! What happened?" called Steve.
Since it was dark outside, and the only light available was the light that streamed in from the city (which wasn't that much considering how high up they were) and that from the moon, it took them all a minute to adjust to the darkness.
"Must be a power outage," Tony answered.
"I have no service," he announced after a moments pause, presumably having looked at his phone. "Me neither," said Bruce.
"Great. No service, so we can't call anyone, no power, so we can't use the lifts, and the kid is missing. This is just fantastic," Clint said, sarcastically.
"That timing seems rather odd," muttered Natasha. "What do you mean?" asked Tony, only half paying attention as he was still trying to get his many devices to work again.
"Percy is missing from his room at the exact same time there's a power outage? Doesn't that seem rather convenient?" she pressed, folding her arms.
Before she could be answered, muffled shouting could be heard through the walls, followed by... gunshots.
Their eyes widened. "Yes," whispered Clint. "It does."
"Okay. Tony, you and Clint stay here and try to get the power back on. Keep on the lookout in case Percy comes through," ordered Steve, receiving a nod from both men.
"Romanoff, you go out and see if you can find him anywhere else in the building. He can't have gone far, but don't hurt him if you find him. Me and Bruce will head up to the med bay and see if we can find out what happened," he continued.
"Affirmative" said Natasha, nodding and taking out one of her guns, checking if it was loaded.
"What about Jason? Do you think he's okay?" asked Bruce, sounding slightly worried.
"He crashed as soon as we got to his room. I wouldn't be surprised if he was still out," informed Natasha before heading quickly out the door.
"He probably doesn't even know what's going on. I'm sure he's fine," assured Steve.
"Unless the two of them have been planning this and hustling us this entire time," Tony muttered under his breath.
"We are not jumping to conclusions. This may have nothing to do with them," argued Steve. "Whatever you say, Cap" replied Tony, going back to his work.
Steve then turned back to Bruce. "Let's get going."
...
The two Avengers quickly but quietly headed through the building. They didn't know what exactly was going on, but they didn't want to charge into Percy and spook him, even if he did have something to do with those gunshots.
"I'm surprised Percy was even able to move properly, let alone execute an escape attempt," muttered Bruce.
"I don't know. Something feels off about this," replied Steve, slowly looking through the corridors for any sign of life. There was none.
"I don't understand. Where are all the agents?" asked Bruce.
Steve didn't have to answer. They rounded the corner of the hallway that led to the med bay when Bruce gasped. Bodies littered the floor.
They froze, staring at the scene before them in horror. Bruce slowly leaned down beside one, pressing his fingers to their neck.
"They're still alive," he announced after a beat of silence.
Steve realised a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding. "What could have done this?" Bruce thought out-loud.
"Not what," responded Steve. "Who."
Bruce looked up to see Steve gesturing at the floor. Bruce reached out at touched it, frowning as he did so. "It's... wet," he said, confused.
"You remember what Percy said when we were checking him out after that monster attack?" Steve asked, knowingly.
"He can control water," remembered Bruce. "But how on earth was he able to do all this? Where did he get the water from?"
Steve pointed up at the now broken pipes, drips still falling from them, as well as the agents as a matter of fact.
Bruce muttered something Steve would not approve of under his breath. "So basically, he is surrounded by a huge water source all throughout the building, that he is also freely wandering around?" groaned Bruce.
"Sounds about right," agreed Steve. "Well, hate to be a cliché but at least it's not raining," said Bruce.
Thunder rolled outside and seconds later rain began to lash down from the sky.
"Oh come on!" said Bruce, throwing his head back in agitation.
"Come on. Let's go check his room," said Steve, continuing on down the hall.
When they got there, the sight was worse than the corridor.
The lights were hanging by one cable off the wall, tables had been tossed in all sorts of directions, vials and testing tubes had been smashed scattering glass on the floor, and more bodies lay haphazardly across the room. Their chests were moving at least.
"Percy did all this?" asked Bruce in disbelief, walking around the room taking it all in. He stopped at one of the corners of the room where a camera was placed near the roof. He carefully climbed up on top of one of the tables that had not been overturned and inspected the device.
"It's been completely fried," he called out. "The water must have short-circuited it's wiring. We won't be able to see what happened, anyway."
"He must have busted out of his room," observed Steve, looking over at the now bashed-in door, literally crushed with force into the wall with how hard it had been thrown open.
He headed over to the room Percy previously occupied and gasped. Bruce appeared beside him, giving a similar reaction.
The room was a wreck. The bed sheets had been torn to shreds. There were multiple dents in the walls as if something, or someone, had been thrown repeatedly into them.
"Come on," said Steve, quickly turning and heading back out into the hallway. "Where are we going?" asked Bruce, hurrying after him.
"Wherever Percy is. We need to fine him, before he can do anymore-"
They both skidded to a halt and froze.
Down the corridor stood an unmoving figure. Their twitching hands could be seen despite the darkness. Heavy breathing could be heard, although it didn't sound quite like breathing. More like... growling.
Bruce took a hesitant step forward. "Percy?" he asked, cautiously.
No reply. "Percy, whatever has happened, we can help you," tried Steve, carefully moving forward.
"No," Percy muttered suddenly, causing Bruce and Steve to stop in their tracks. "Percy, please-" began Steve.
"No!" he yelled. His shaking intensified as he slowly raised his head, revealing crazed eyes and bared teeth, snarling at them. "I don't need your help," he hissed. "I never did."
He sprung forward, moving so fast it caught them off guard. They barely dodged in time.
Percy attacked them, and Steve could tell the difference between his fighting now and when he was fighting in training. The only problem with this difference was that now Steve could tell that previously, Percy had been holding back. Not anymore.
Even in his state, he still fought with such force. Such ferocity. The training must have really sunk in.
Steve grunted in effort, trying to keep up with him, but Percy was so fast. He jumped in the air, over him, and landed a kick on his back, knocking him to the floor. He then turned to Bruce, who didn't fair much better.
Percy launched his body forward right into Bruce, but he was able to roll with the impact and kick Percy off. That didn't stop him though.
He hissed at him and proceeded to perform multiple quick strikes, several of which landed their target before Steve jumped in.
Percy's blows were painful, landing several on Steve's jaw and arms, and many on Bruce's stomach and shins. Luckily for the men though, Percy was still not completely on top of his game. The disease had made him less focused, his moves less precise. That didn't stop them from being deadly, though.
Steve managed eventually to throw him back, causing the boy to slide across the floor. Percy glared at him, looking ready to pounce once again. Instead of attacking though, he smirked then took off down the hallway.
The two blinked in surprise before chasing after him, but by the time they reached the end of the corridor, he was gone, having disappeared into the darkness.
"Where do you think he could have gone?" asked Bruce, eyes still roaming the halls for any trace of the teenager.
"I don't know, but without any surveillance footage, we have no way of knowing where he is. We should regroup with the others and see if they made any progress," decided Steve.
Bruce nodded as they quickly made their way back to their team. "Let's hope so. He managed to really do a number on us without even using his powers. Better we put this to a stop before he puts us down."
...
"Any luck?" asked Clint once Steve and Bruce had appeared back through the door. Natasha had already returned, and from the looks of it, she'd had about as much luck as they did, judging by her death glare.
"Not exactly," sighed Bruce. Clint frowned. "What do you mean?"
"We got up to the med bay, only to find it completely trashed, along with Percy's room," explained Bruce.
"Percy wasn't there?" asked Natasha, sounding frustrated. "Well..." trailed off Bruce, scratching the back of his head.
"I don't like the sound of that," Tony said, still focused on trying to get the building up and running.
"We found him, or more like he found us," said Steve. "He attacked us. We tried to talk to him, but he wouldn't even listen. He was aggressive, extremely violent."
"Where is he now?" questioned Natasha, brows furrowed at what she had been told. "We don't know," admitted Steve. "After he jumped us, he disappeared."
"So he could be anywhere," noted Clint.
"He's probably looking for us right now, so we better stay on guard in case-"
The doors crashed open, and a dark figure stepped through, scanning the room before his eyes landed on the group. He growled at them, pure fury in his eyes.
"I think he's found us," said Bruce, stepping back from the wild boy before them.
"We don't want to hurt you, Percy, and I'm sure you don't want to hurt us," Steve called out. "That's debatable," muttered Tony. Steve shot him a glare before refocusing on Percy.
"Why don't we all just take a deep breath and we can talk this all-" he was knocked to the ground before he could finish with a loud roar.
Percy grabbed him by the collar and punched him three times in the face before anyone intervened.
Natasha jumped forward, attempting to shove Percy off, but Percy must have sensed her approach as he flipped through the air out of the way, resulting in Steve only narrowing missing her assault.
Clint managed to grab Percy by the arms, but Percy somehow freed himself from his grip and swept Clint's legs out from under him.
Just as Percy was about to lunge at him again, something shot through the air and knocked him down. He rolled across the ground from the surprise impact, grunting as he did so. He shook his head to gather himself, and when he looked up, he found himself surrounded by the Avengers.
Tony had managed to access his suit, seeing as it ran on its own power source, and was the cause of Percy's surprise downfall.
He slowly got to his feet, turning around in an attempt to face them all at once.
"Percy." He turned to the source of the voice. "Please, I don't know what is going on with you, but I do know that you're sick, and you need help," pleaded Natasha.
Percy showed no recognition that she had even spoken. "I don't think he can here you, Nat," said Bruce, eyes still on the young boy.
Percy surveyed them all in turn. They all angered him. He didn't know why exactly, but he knew that they needed to be taken down. Permanently.
"You're wrong," he whispered, finally. "I've never felt better. I've never felt so...alive."
He raised his hands up in the air, and the ground immediately began to shake.
Their eyes widened as they all tried to keep their balance. A crash sounded beside them. They looked over to see the window had been blown open, the rain souring in.
It came together to create one large wave which was thrown directly on them. Nobody was prepared.
Each Avenger was tossed around, none of them able to suck in a single breath, the water moving with such power. Finally they dropped to the ground, all of them coughing harshly. They didn't have long to recover, though.
"Clint watch out!" shouted Natasha, as jet streams of water were shot at her friend. He quickly rolled out of the way onto his feet.
More streams were fired at each of them repeatedly. Steve somersaulted out of the way. He ran forward, trying desperately to get closer to Percy, but to no avail. He was thrown backwards once again.
Natasha jumped onto the tables and chairs littering the room, coming down on Percy from above. She swung in the air and brought a kick down to knock him square in the chest, but just as she was about to land it, Percy's head swung round, his eyes narrowing in on her.
He thrust his hands upwards and a surge of water erupted right into her, sending her flying through the air and crash landing across the room.
Clint charged forward, seeing as he didn't have his bow on him to use a long-distance attack. Just as he had made it halfway, he froze. The water had frozen, right before his eyes, turning into sharp icicles.
He dashed backward for cover just as the water daggers shot through the room.
He ducked behind an overturned table, finding his teammates alongside him.
"How on earth do we beat this kid?" yelled Tony across the noise of ice being thrown at their table and all around them.
"And since when did he have this much power?" added Clint. "Guess we should have looked into it a little more when he said he had more powers than what we had seen," Steve commented, realising how obvious of a necessity that was.
"You think?" yelled Tony, looking at him like he was an idiot.
"I can change into Hulk, he'll give him a good fight," suggested Bruce, ducking slightly as an icicle shattered right above his head, sending shards into his hair.
"No. He might hurt Percy, and we don't want that," said Steve, shaking his head.
"That's getting pretty hard to do since he's hurting us pretty badly," stressed Tony.
"Where'd you all go? The fun was just getting started!" Percy called out, his taunt followed by another stream of water surging over their heads and into their table, pushing it forward. They all grunted in effort trying to keep it in place.
"I can shoot him," offered Tony. "No! We are not shooting him!" Steve yelled in disgust.
"Not shoot to kill, shoot to stun," clarified Tony. Even with his suit on, the eye roll was obvious.
"Can you get a good shot?" asked Natasha. Tony poked his head above the table, only to lurch back down when a block of ice whizzed past where his head had just been.
"May be a bit harder than I thought," he admitted.
Just as they were about to formulate a plan to get Tony a clear shooting range, their cover splintered into pieces, blasting them backwards in the process.
Just as they were attempting to get up, they were pulled hastily along the floor. They tried to grab onto something to keep them grounded, but were quickly lifted into the air.
They were all trapped in a tentacle of water, Percy looking up at all of them with his hands raised.
"There you all are. I was beginning to think you'd left," he said, smiling darkly at them.
"Percy-" Clint was cut off as the water tightened around him before throwing him down into the ground, then raising him back up again.
"No! None of you get to say anything!" yelled Percy, snarling up at all of them.
"Percy please, we're just trying to-" Natasha was smashed into the wall.
"Help?" guessed Percy, mockingly. "Of course that's what you think you're doing. What you all think you're doing."
"But we are. That's what we want, what we have wanted since you came here-" Steve choked slightly as the water on him tightened.
"Came here? Oh, that's rich. I didn't come here. You kidnapped me! You've refused to let me leave, kept me locked in a room at night, and then all day as well! So excuse me if I don't exactly see that as 'helping,'" hissed Percy.
"Kids got a point," Tony stated, unhelpfully. Tony's armour started to creak from the increased grip. "Don't. Call me. A kid," whispered Percy, glaring daggers at the billionaire. "I have seen far worse things than any of you ever have or ever will. I stopped being a child long ago. So stop speaking to me as if I'm just some confused, ignorant little kid!"
The ground began to rumble, the very earth shaking far below. "He can cause earthquakes now?" yelled Tony through the noise, astonished.
The Avengers were raised further up, moving over to the broken windows. Realising what was going to happen, they began to struggle aggressively, but to no avail.
"No stop! You can't do this!" Bruce shouted, desperately attempting to get through to the young boy.
"You know, I've never been very good at doing what I'm told, or following instructions," Percy thought out-loud. He shrugged, smiling darkly. "Sorry to say now's not going to be any different. It's time this ended."
"Yes, it is."
The water's grip around the heroes relinquished, and they fell to the ground with a grunt just barely missing the edge of the building.
They looked up to see Percy had been knocked to the ground, causing him to lose focus on the water he had around them. He lifted his head, a snarl coating his features, and pulled himself to his feet, turning to find the source of the interruption.
Jason stood behind him, gaze dark and stern, watching his friends every movement.
"You," whispered Percy, staring at him from across the room. "Jason yes!" said Tony, sounding exceptionally relived to have the teenager present. They all were in all honesty. Both boys ignored him, though. In fact, Percy's attention now seemed completely focused on Jason, as if he had forgotten the Avengers were even there.
"Percy, this isn't you. It's the disease. It's infected your mind, but you have to fight it!" Jason carefully took a step forward. "I know you're still in there, man. I need you to hear me now, and come back to us."
Percy stared at him for a long minute. To the keen eye, a brief glimpse of recognition could be noticed flashing across him, but it was gone before it could properly register.
"No. You did this to me. You left me! Alone! How could you abandon me when I needed you!" yelled Percy, the anger returning in full force.
Jason looked at him with pity. "Percy I didn't-"
"No! I know what is going on, what you've been doing behind my back. You can't lie to me anymore!" Percy shouted with such fury, but what also sounded like heartbreak.
He was taking a step forward every so often, which allowed the others to notice that he was swaying slightly on his feet. He was completely unstable in mind and body.
"Percy, I don't want to hurt you," pleaded Jason. Now the Avengers noticed that Jason also seemed a little unstable. Not as twitchy as Percy, but his pale and exhausted expression definitely showed it. Although, they seemed undermined by the sheer determination he held himself with.
"Jason's still weak," muttered Bruce, eyes locked on the pair.
"But Percy is utterly out of focus. Jason may be able to overpower him," Natasha voiced, slowly sitting up, wincing at the movement. They were all banged up from the beating Percy instilled on them.
"Did you see what the kid did back there? We didn't stand a chance against him. How could a sick teenager?" argued Tony, looking at him perplexed as Percy and Jason continued, oblivious to their conversation.
"But I want to hurt you," said Percy, raising his hands up once again.
The water all around them gravitated towards him, forming a large ball that swirled with power overhead. Without warning, Percy launched it at Jason.
He ducked out of the way and pushed his own hands forward. A powerful gust of wind shot at Percy, hitting him into the wall.
"Oh, that's how," remarked Tony, impressed.
"Move!" Jason yelled suddenly, looking in their direction. "Yep that sounds like a good idea," agreed Clint, quickly pulling himself together as they all dashed away from the fight to find cover.
"Everyone okay?" asked Steve once they were safe(ish).
"More or less," grunted Clint, rolling his shoulder. Natasha cracked her neck. "I could go for round two," she said, face emotionless.
"I think Jason's got it covered," declared Bruce, peaking round to look at the fight. They all raised their heads to see Jason and Percy going head to two, both holding their ground.
Jason managed to swirl Percy round in a strong gale, before realising him from the air and letting him fall onto the floor. Percy was quick to recover though, and maneuvered the water round his body before shooting right at Jason, who was pushed back by the impact.
As Jason panted, regaining his bearings, Percy charged forward, screaming a war cry.
Jason sneered and lunged at him, causing the two to crash into each other.
They exchanged blows. Percy sent a punch directly into Jason's jaw, while Jason rebounded with an upper cut. Jason blocked another attack, but missed one aimed at his gut. He grunted in pain, resulting in him not seeing the incoming kick to the chest, sending him flying backwards.
He slid across the floor right beside the group of stunned Avengers.
He hauled himself in beside them, holding his side just as ball of ice zoomed in his direction.
"He's not holding back," muttered Jason, grimacing as he moved to be better shielded. "Really? What gave you that impression?" Tony asked, sarcastically.
Jason glared at him. "I'm one of the only one's who can keep up with Percy in training, and that's when he's holding back."
"But you still stand a chance, right? I mean you were actually landing a hit on him. We couldn't even get close to him," said Bruce, brows furrowed.
Jason rolled his eyes. "That's because you're only... never mind. Point is, this is going to be very difficult," he admitted, trying to look round but only being met with another surge of water.
"Get out here you cowards!" bellowed Percy from ahead.
"But you could still hold your own against him, can't you..." Tony trailed off when he saw the look on Jason's face.
"Percy is the most powerful out of all of us," he deadpanned. "And he hasn't even unleashed his full display of power."
"What?! What was he doing before, a warm-up act?" asked Clint, shocked.
"Yup," said Jason, just as the wind began to pick up around them. "And now is the main act."
"Wait what?" shouted Clint as Jason's words registered, but he got no response.
Jason stood and walked around their barricade.
The air swirled around him, rain attacking him from all angles as he tried to shield his eyes.
Percy had his hands held out from his sides, gripped slightly in control. Hurricane. The ground once again began to rumble, and Percy lifted off the ground. His eyes had turned bright white, and he snarled at Jason.
Jason as best he could summoned the winds and lifted himself off the ground as well. He knew how dangerous the both of them doing this would be, but he didn't have a choice. I'm sorry, Percy.
The sky outside began to thunder, lightning shooting across the clouds.
Jason was bloody and bruised, aching all over, but he had to do this before Percy destroyed the entire building, the entire city. Before I succumb to it, too, and can't control myself. Can't stop myself.
Distantly he could here yells from the mortals, but he ignored them, solely focusing on what was to come.
The winds and rain crashed outside and all around them, the lightning coming more frequently and more ferociously with the more power each demigod summoned. Jason closed his eyes and it quietened, as the sound of his breathing blocking out all external noises, his heartbeat slowing down to a steady rhythm. Ba dum, ba dum, ba dum...
Jason opened his eyes as an explosion of unmatched power blinded the room, screaming with pure and uncontrollable energy.
The last thing he saw was his friend screaming with raw anger that he couldn't hear, barrelling towards him with no relent.
And he did the same.
