The day with the lasagna
May
Monday, November 18th
"Oh, the clients are not going to like this weather," Nicole said with a shake of her head as she scrolled through something on her laptop. "Look at this, May. Horrible thunderstorm coming, they say."
May made her way from her own desk to that of her colleague and looked at Nicole's screen. Indeed, as Nicole had already said, there was a bad storm brewing in eastern Kanto, and the people being on holiday would not appreciate the advice the travel agency had given them.
"How could that have come up so fast? Yesterday there was nothing!" May said, already feeling uncomfortable as she thought of the angry clients that would be at her desk next week, complaining about their holiday in Kanto being ruined by this storm. Certainly, no travel agency could guarantee perfect weather, especially not in November, but Dewgong Tours and Holidays did try to guarantee good weather, which both made it extremely popular with customers as well as extremely stressful for the employees when they had to slap-bang change destinations for their clients.
Nicole shook her head and shrugged. "I really have no idea... Kanto is usually very easy with its weather, but I suppose sometimes shit happens."
May let out a sigh and went back to her own desk and computer. She was almost done with going through the list of complaints, questions and feedback they had received the past week. Most of the questions centered around the Wayland Tournament and if it was possible to book a combined flight and stay. When another similar question popped up, May decided that they should put it on the list of Frequently Asked Questions on the website and wrote a note so that she wouldn't forget to do that tomorrow.
It bode well for the Wayland Tournament, though, if there were already so many questions. "Did you hear about the Wayland Tournament, Nicole?"
"Of course I did! Who didn't! Cynthia is absolutely genius for doing something like that. I'm going, too." Nicole beamed. "Just to watch, mind you, I've never been any good with Battling, but Ben is participating and of course I'm going there to cheer him on." She smiled and then added with a wink, "And it's just the perfect reason to have a romantic vacation in Sinnoh, too."
May smiled, though her stomach clenched uncomfortably. "Yes, I've been getting a lot of questions about it, so I think I'll put up some a small article on the site tomorrow, that'll prevent many questions, I hope."
Nicole nodded enthusiastically in agreement. "Yes, absolutely, so many people are going, it's crazy - but Cynthia is crazy popular, and there are rumors that Wallace will play a role in the Tournament as well, so it really shouldn't be a surprise." She gave May a look. "Are you going? You're a Coordinator, right?"
May shook her head with a laugh. "No, no, I left my Pokémon career behind a long time ago. Maybe I'll go to watch, but participating, nah..." Though, she had to admit that it did sound like a challenge, and how long ago had it been that she had really battled with her Pokémon? It must have been on the rare occasions when she had trained with Drew.
"Shame, but I agree with you," Nicole said with a shrug. "Travelling is fun and all, but at some point you have to think of the future."
"Exactly," May said, nodding.
Nicole glanced at the clock. "You're almost done? I'll finish up this announcement about the storm in Kanto and then I'm going home."
"Yeah, I'm almost done," May said, turning her attention back to her screen. "Just a few more messages…"
After ten minutes Nicole stretched her arms with a groan before getting up. May hastily finished reading the last message – also about the Wayland Tournament – and then turned off her computer as well.
"Ah, almost weekend," Nicole said, and May chuckled.
"Just four more days, Nicole, just four more days."
"I know." Nicole sighed. "I'm just really looking forward to seeing my sisters again, it's been too long since I've visited the flower shop." She brightened again. "But at least I don't have to cook tonight, Ben came home early and he said he'd cook."
"Nice! Drew's home, too, since the weather is too bad to properly train on the road, and it's his turn to cook as well," May said, smiling slightly. Drew had returned home the day before yesterday, because the rain had continued these past few days and even today the weather was still dreary. Even though May knew that Drew preferred to train on the road, she still found herself (a tad guiltily) feeling happy about the bad weather.
"Ah, we've got it good," Nicole said, laughing. She closed their office and together they made their way downstairs, but at the exit they had to part ways. Nicole went in the direction of the edge of the city, while May and Drew's apartment was located close to the center of the city. It was a short walk, but the impeding darkness and the cold wind made May hurry home. At least it wasn't raining anymore.
Around her, shops were closing and lights in the apartments on the higher floors turned on. The city with its constant activity and skyscrapers still didn't really feel like home to May, and she'd much rather go in Nicole's direction, towards the houses with gardens and even further to the open grassland.
But at least Drew was back again, May thought with a smile. Perhaps they could watch a movie or play a game or something. Maybe even go out together. It had been so long since they had properly spent time together…
May felt a smile pull at her lips when she found the apartment warm and light, and the Pokémon were already eating, too. Maybe she could feel at home here…
She took off her coat and put her bag in the corner of the hall, before continuing to the kitchen. The smile fell from her face when she saw the microwave turned on, and Drew with his laptop sitting at the kitchen table.
"Hey, Drew, I'm home," she greeted weakly when Drew didn't look up.
"Hey," he said, distractedly, though he did tear away his attention from his laptop to look at her.
"What's for dinner?" she asked, tiredness seeping in her voice, and hoping against hope that it wasn't what she thought.
Drew frowned slightly before looking away. "Sorry, I was busy training so I just got us a microwave dinner. I got your favorite, though, lasagna."
May pressed her lips together and she was tempted to tell him that she actually preferred the spaghetti, but in the end she kept silent. He had meant well...
"I'll set the table," she said, and Drew hummed in agreement, but his eyes were already back on the laptop.
A/N: Thanks a lot for reading! Nicole is not an original character, by the way, and ten brownie points to whoever knows which episode she comes from ;) And please review!
Thank you!
Recommendations:
Pokémon: New Beginning by 03Renee1214. FFN. Thanks a lot to QUEENSPELLER67 for recommending this story to me! This is a (so far unfinished) multi-chaptered story about a world in which Team Plasma is in charge and Pokémon are considered dangerous. But Ash and Misty's daughter finds a wounded Pokémon and gets involved in things that are way above her head… Seems to have a very promising plot! And don't worry, Ash, Misty and other characters definitely have a role to play ;)
Pokémon: Birthday Kisses by Snoaz. FFN. Recommended by inklaced, thank you very much! This is a very sweet and fun OldrivalShipping one-shot, and well, you can guess from the title where things are going to go, but it's very well-written and the characters are awesome :D
Star Wars: Dark Times by Treenahasthaal. FFN. A very dark but very exciting multi-chapter in progress about Luke, who ends up being captured when something goes wrong during a mission, and it eventually leads him right in the hands of Darth Vader…
Please, recommendations are very welcome!
