Days

The day when Cilan had to sit down

Cilan

Monday, November 25th

"Pansage, dodge!"

Cilan's trusty grass type jumped out of the way of an attempt at X-Scissor, and with a tauntingly calm smile he landed on the other side of the opponent. Pansage was getting confident, as so far he had been able to avoid all incoming attacks. Cilan himself felt his hopes rising as well, but the Durant had the type advantage and it was always bad to underestimate a foe.

The beefy man on the other side of the field seemed to get more agitated and frustrated with each evaded attack. "Iron Head!"

"Dodge!" Cilan called, and this time Pansage only jumped away in the nick of time. They couldn't keep this up forever. Pansage would tire and no one had ever won a battle by running away. "Dig and create some distance, Pansage!"

Before Pansage was able to start, the Durant seemed to have had enough with constantly missing and without a command from its Trainer it burst forward and pushed Pansage over. Durant attempted to trap Pansage under its smaller but much heavier body, and Pansage did his best to free himself, but had to be careful to stay away from its sharp mandibles.

"Use your Vine Whip to pull yourself free, Pansage!"

"Cilan!" From the side, Cress called his name, but Cilan was too engrossed in Pansage's struggle for freedom.

"Cilan!" Cress yelled again, his voice rising in panic, before turning to their other brother playing referee. "Chili, stop the battle!"

Cilan's attention was torn away from the battle by the audible panic in Cress's voice and fear settled in his stomach.

"Time-out, time-out!" Chili yelled immediately, just as Pansage had managed to pull himself free.

"Cilan! It's- it's Iris, Cilan!" Cress said, looking at Cilan with wide eyes. Cilan felt his heart drop. "She's really upset- She's on the phone, I don't know why- She wants to talk to you, but she doesn't- She's completely-"

"I'm coming," Cilan interrupted his rambling brother.

He quickly recalled Pansage, and not caring about how rude he sounded, he said to the challenger, "My apologies, but I forfeit. The Striaton Badge is yours, talk to my brothers."

With that, Cilan ran from the battlefield, though he could hear his opponent yell something.

The screen of the video phone was still turned on, showing a flushed Iris who was fidgeting with something. Her eyes widened further when she saw him coming and she appeared to steel herself, though Cilan couldn't imagine what for. At least nothing seemed to be acutely wrong with her, but Cilan felt far from reassured.

"Iris, what's wrong?"

"I... I have to talk to you. Look, you need to sit down, okay?" When Cilan didn't immediately do so, she added with an edge of frustration, "Just sit down!"

Cilan sat down, feeling more and more uncertain about what to expect.

"Okay, so, these past few days I've been feeling sick and tired and it always passed and I thought it was just because of the stress and the moving and all, but then I realized-"

She was rambling and she cut herself off with a wild shake of her head.

To Cilan, she seemed to be frustrated, confused, fearful and (perhaps even more scarily) close to tears. But even with his Connoisseur's knowledge, he had no clue what could have caused those feelings.

Iris took a breath and seemed to blink rapidly to keep away the tears. "Look, just don't- I mean, please don't- I just- I don't know what to do-"

"Iris, whatever happened, I promise that I will always be at your side," Cilan said earnestly, looking her in the eye.

If he had expected her to be reassured by his words, he had been wrong.

Iris let out a wail and jumped up, her hands clenched in fists. "No, no, no, why do you have to say that, dammit! Why do you always have to be so fucking selfless?! You don't even know- Aaargh!"

She kicked the chair she had been sitting on and tears were now well and truly falling.

Cilan felt powerless and utterly out of his depth. In all the years he had known her, he had never seen her this upset.

"Why don't you tell me?" he offered weakly when Iris hid her face behind one hand, her other hand clutching something.

He admitted to himself that he was afraid of the answer – whatever was going on, it had to be bad. None of the possible options he thought of fit with the situation, though; something with the Gym, something with her Pokémon, something with her father, something with Drayden-

He himself seemed to have something to do with it, but that made it all the more befuddling.

Iris squeezed her eyes shut and then held the thing she had been holding in front of the camera. "Here!"

Cilan looked at the plastic stick, uncomprehending.

"I'm pregnant."

The words seemed to echo in the room for several long seconds, forming a low buzz in Cilan's ears.

"Wha-what?"

"I'm pregnant! I'm having a baby! We're having… we're having a baby." Iris breathed in and seemed a bit calmer. "You're the father."

Well. Of course. That was it meant. Iris's pregnancy. That meant she was pregnant. That meant she was having a baby. His baby. Their baby. Yes. That was what it meant. He knew that.

"Cilan?"

He was handling this well. He thought. Yes, rather well. It was a good thing. A baby, he meant. A baby was a good thing. He thought so at least.

"Cilan, are you okay?"

Yes, yes, a baby was good. A baby was okay. What was the question again?

"Uh…" Cilan blinked himself out of his stupor. "I… Yes… A baby… That's- that's good, right?"

Iris had wiped away her tears and had sat back down, looking considerably calmer. Cilan wasn't so certain about his own state of mind.

"Well… Yes… I think so…"

"Okay."

Focus, Cilan, focus.

"When did you find out?"

A timeline, yes, that was a good start.

"Just... just now, I called you right away."

"And you did a test, right?" Iris blinked and Cilan remembered that she had just shown him that. "Right, right, of course you did a test."

Silence extended between them and Cilan's mind was curiously empty.

"What are we going to do, Cilan?" Iris asked quietly.

He had always wanted a family. With Iris, too. It was just… unexpected. Unplanned. He liked to plan things. He would need to do a lot of planning if he was going to be a father…

Cilan gathered himself again and looked, really looked at Iris again. She seemed to have regained control of herself, but with the tear streaks on her cheeks and her lips pressed together she seemed almost fragile to him.

"This is not something we should discuss over the phone," Cilan decided.

Iris smiled weakly and pushed her shoulders back. "I'll come over- No, I'll come over," she repeated at the look on his face. "I need… I need to clear my head and flying is just the way to do that." She nodded to herself.

"Alright, yes." Cilan nodded. "We're in this together?" It came out like a question instead of a statement.

"We're in this together," Iris confirmed. She gave him a quick wave and then ended the call.

Cilan let out a long sigh and leaned back in the chair. It was a good thing he had sat down, after all.

A/N: And the very first pregnancy is revealed! What did you guys think about it? :) I'm pretty certain that the next chapter won't take as long. Thank you for reading and your patience, and please review!
