Days

The day Drew can't focus

Drew

Saturday, November 30th

"Are you sure I don't have to drive you? Or walk with you?" Drew asked for the third time, but again, May shook her head. She looked pale and withdrawn, already wearing her coat and clutching her bag in her gloved hands.

"No, no… thanks, but I won't be long," she said. Drew looked at her inquisitively for a bit longer, but May was staring past him. A bit unsure what to do, he leaned in and pressed a kiss on her cheek.

"Alright. Take care, okay?"

May smiled a bit at that, though still not looking at him. She nodded and then left for the appointment with the doctor to discuss her options about the pregnancy.

Drew let out a massive sigh when the door closed behind her.

Arceus...

It still didn't feel real, the pregnancy. Pregnancy…

Just a few days ago, May had interrupted his training by calling him to please come home, and when he had done so, she had confessed that she had never gone to work that day but instead had went to the doctor for a pregnancy test. And it had been positive.

It went without saying that she hadn't gone to work and that he hadn't gotten any training in. The rest of the day was a mess of comforting May and coming to terms with the fact himself. He had not really succeeded with either, though he thought he put up a good front.

May had thought he would be furious and while that was an overstatement, he certainly wasn't happy with the situation. He had pushed his own feelings aside and had focused on comforting May, after all, this was not the end of the world.

The day after the pregnancy announcement he had done some research on what their options were and they had talked seriously about that. Obviously, May had been emotionally conflicted about getting an abortion. He shouldn't have expected differently, May had always been more family-minded, and with those hormones it was logical-

But she had promised.

Drew took in a sharp breath. May had promised, and she knew the reality of their situation. They were too young. They lived in a rented apartment. His income was unstable and May's income would fall away when- They had an unstable financial situation. They had their careers. They had their futures.

For a moment, Drew felt the tight panic rise up in his throat, preventing him from getting enough air.

No, no, May had agreed to an abortion. There was no need to be worried. They were going to get through this together and then everything would continue to be just as it had always been, just him and May together, and this would be no more than a dark memory.

What if she changed her mind?

The thought was paralyzing and Drew felt panic close its ice-cold hand around his chest again. He forced himself to breathe in and out deeply for a few times, calming his racing heart, and then walked over to the balcony doors. The freezing air hit him when he opened the doors, and he reveled in the harsh wake-up call.

Drew looked down at the streets, where people were going about their daily business. Mauville City had grown into a modern metropolis and that meant that even in the weekends it was a hustle and bustle.

Life went on.

The cold got to him and Drew shivered, before stepping back inside and closing the doors again. Yes, life went on, and in a few months all this would be nothing more than a bad memory, a roadblock they had gotten past and that was already half-forgotten.

Nothing would change. May wouldn't let him down. Drew took a breath and released it through his nose. He didn't have to be worried. He was wasting his time by standing here, staring outside and worrying about something that would be fine.

With a resolute shake of his head, Drew put those thoughts away and grabbed his laptop. He couldn't go to the Gym right now to watch some live Battles, because he wanted to be home when May came back, but that didn't mean he could spend his time idle.

There were more than enough free clips on the net featuring Battles of amateur Battlers, but Drew preferred quality, even if he had to pay to see proper recordings of official League Battles. It was, after all, for the future. He had a reputation to uphold and utterly failing at the Tournament would not match his image.

Drew wondered where to start, scrolling through lists and lists of tournaments and matches from all over the world on the official League website. He had already seen enough Gym Battles, and he was far from a beginner, so the Baby Cups were out…

Ah, the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup. It was an old one, but that hardly mattered. It consisted of all one-on-one Battles, so it would be easy to pause between videos.

Unova, he recognized immediately, and nodded to himself when he was able to put a name to the featured Pokémon, because it had turned out that there were quite some Pokémon he had never seen been before.

An arrogant looking Trainer with a mob of dirty blond hair had sent out a Serperior, facing a pale girl with short purple hair and her Darmanitan. Despite the type disadvantage Serperior had, the battle was over before it had properly begun, after a Leer attack and a Solar Beam from the grass type. With some disdain, Drew watched how the girl threw a tantrum at having lost.

He had been a sore loser at times, too, but he had never acted like that. He knew better. The beginning of his career had been difficult, but going back home had been out of the question, and throwing a tantrum would have been a surefire way to get back home.

Yes, it had been difficult, but he had found his way, had found his Pokémon and eventually friends- May… She had been so much fun to tease back then, Drew recalled. She still was…

He didn't want to change anything.

Drew blinked and pulled himself out of his thoughts. The next video had already started playing without him noticing and he quickly hit pause.

Mew, he didn't know why he kept thinking about it. May would make the right decision, he knew she would. He trusted her. There was no reason to think that she would not keep her word, and so he shouldn't be having these worrying thoughts but instead be working on his Battling knowledge.

Drew forced his attention back to the laptop, but after another ten minutes of trying and failing to focus he gave up. Instead, he released his Absol and started to brush his fur. Sadly, this was no easy solution to keep his thoughts from drifting, but at least Absol would remind him of his inattention.

Then May came back.

As soon as Drew heard the door open, he jumped up and hurried towards her. May smiled weakly at him, but it was obvious she had been crying. His heart clenched. Dammit, he should have been there with her.

Drew held open his arms and after a pause May fell into his embrace. Drew squeezed his eyes shut when he heard her sobs and held her tight, whispering that it would be alright and that they would get through this, that she didn't have to do this alone and that they were in this together.

A/N: Drew definitely got his issues… He was a bit difficult to write, but I hope I did okay. Thank you for reading, and please leave me a review on your way out ;) Oh, and kudos to whoever knows whose battle Drew was watching on his laptop XD

Thank you!
