A/N: Apparently I wanted to update so fast that I was seen as a spammer... So this chapter is a little bit later than expected, but still pretty fast, eh? XD Thank you all for reading and supporting this story, it truly motivates me to write more! So, yeah… Here's the next one! XD
Disclaimer: I don't own Pokémon or the picture used as cover (though I did edit it).
Days
The day with pictures on the walls
May
Wednesday, December 4th
It was almost completely dark in the bedroom. The only light came from the streetlights shining through the curtains, and the alarm clock, steadily ticking away the minutes. May watched the fluorescent clock-hands move soundlessly, as she had for the past hour.
Next to her, Drew was fast asleep and snoring lightly, and with a frustrated sigh May pressed her hands to her ears in an attempt to find her much-needed but still eluding sleep.
It wasn't really Drew's snoring, though.
She thought that she would have peace now that a decision had been made, but the rest lasted only as long as Drew was awake, it seemed. As soon as they went to bed, her thoughts became a mess and her emotions even more so.
Drew always knew the right things to say to stop her from worrying, and May tried to repeat his arguments to herself. She knew them by heart now.
They were too young. True, true, that was very true.
They were too unstable. Also true. Drew's Coordinating career went well, but it was far from a stable income, and would she really want to raise a baby in a tiny apartment in the middle of a big city?
They were not ready. True… Maybe. She didn't know. She… Drew wasn't. She… She wasn't ready either, was she?
And that would all be unfair to the baby.
…But wouldn't be giving it no chance at all be even more unfair?
Dammit, this wasn't working. Now tears were burning in her eyes (again) and May clutched her stomach, even though she knew she shouldn't do that. There wasn't anything there yet, not really. Tomorrow she would get her pills, and then it would be just like a natural miscarriage, the doctor had said. Hardly more painful than having her period. Just a few pills and that was it, nothing would change and their future would be safe.
She felt sick.
Silently, May got up, and she felt some disappointment when Drew continued to sleep soundly. At least he had stayed at home and not gone off to get his Badge, as he had wanted to do before they found out about the pregnancy. She herself had tried to go to work these past few days, but Nicole and several others had remarked that she indeed looked sick and thus she had gone back home again. Plus, with their kind words and gentle inquiries about how she was feeling, she had been afraid she might spill the story, and that they would change her mind.
She walked to the living room, which was dimly lit due to the streetlights shining through the window. Her feet brought her to the wall that she had recently, just before she had found out about her pregnancy, had decorated with pictures.
There was a picture of her family, with Max still being an awkward, gangly teenager. May smiled despite herself. That photo was already quite some years old, and nowadays Max was working at the Gym with their father. It was no secret that Max would really like to take over the Gym one day. Her parents (mostly her mother) were not-so-subtly trying to find him a girlfriend, much to Max's annoyance.
Her parents would love to become grandparents.
No, no, don't think about that.
There were several pictures of her and Drew together, of their friends and rivals throughout the years, and of course pictures of their Pokémon and several important moments in their lives. Against her better judgement, May thought about future pictures, of her and Drew and a baby-
The tears spilled over and May bit back a sob. With resolute movements, she wiped them away. They were too young. They were not ready. They were too unstable. It was unfair to the baby.
Her eyes fell back on the smiling faces of her parents. She wondered if they had been ready when they had had her. They had already been married for two years, so May thought it was a fair guess that she had been planned. But had they been ready? Were any parents to be ever really ready?
Oh Arceus, she couldn't do this. She imagined having to take those pills right now and oh, oh, no… She couldn't, she couldn't- Oh, Drew...
May made no more attempt to wipe away her tears and instead stood sobbing in the living room, arms wrapped around herself.
"May?" Drew's silhouette appeared in the living room and May sucked in a breath. "May, what are you- Oh, May…"
In a few long strides he was with her and he wrapped his arms around her. May's sobs renewed themselves and she clutched to him.
"I- I- I can't, Drew, I just- I'm so sorry, I'm so so sorry, but I-"
"Shh, don't worry…" He hugged her tighter. "It's going to be alright, May. It's late at night and all things seem worse late at night, you know that, May."
She knew that voice so well, his reasonable, imploring voice and she knew that if it was daylight she would indeed think differently. Maybe. She squeezed her eyes shut and nodded against his chest.
"C'mon... let's get you back to bed and we'll properly talk about this in the morning. You'll see things clear again in the morning, I promise." Gently, he pulled her back to the bedroom and May let herself be led.
"I- I can't, Drew, I-"
"Shh... Come, here, sit down. You'll feel better in the morning, I promise." He sat down next to her on the bed and she clutched to him, doing her best to hold in her tears and choking on them.
"Calm down, it'll be fine, it'll be alright," he said, and May tried nodding, just because she wanted things to be alright, too.
"Good," Drew said, "good, just breathe, slowly... Good." He rubbed her back and May tried to give him a smile, but it was altogether too teary and shaky.
She focused on his comforting words and tried to calm her breathing, and slowly, May felt herself grow calmer and finally the tears stopped coming. Drew squeezed her slightly. "Are you feeling a bit better?"
May swallowed and nodded. Drew kissed her forehead and then let her go to move to his side of the bed. May quickly settled under the covers as well and after some moments, Drew pulled her in an embrace again. She tried not to cling to him.
"It'll be alright, May, it'll be alright," Drew murmured.
"Yes, it'll alright," she repeated quietly, and then closed her eyes. It took a while before Drew's breathing slowed, and it took even longer for May to finally find sleep.
A/N: Okay, it was quite heartbreaking to write this chapter… But that's all I'll say, otherwise I might spoil :P Thank you very much for reading, and please review!
Thank you!
Recommendations:
Pokémon: Dinner and its sequel Breakfast by Snoaz. FFN. Inklaced recommended these to me, thank you! If you like OldrivalShipping, you're definitely going to love these two one-shots. The first one shows a special occasion between Blue and Green, and the second one shows the morning after that special occasion. Also featuring Silver!
Pokémon: Somewhere Only We Know by dinobot (add spaces after each letter). FFN. This is a PokeShipping one-shot showing that attaining one's dreams doesn't always feel like one expected, and how Ash and Misty find themselves unexpectedly in a familiar place and situation. Thank you, PokeshipperByHeart, for recommending this to me.
Star Wars: Into the Archives by skygawker. FFN. A really cool AU of Revenge of the Sith, in which Anakin breaks into the restricted Holocron Vault to get information about a way to save Padmé. Of course things go wrong. Sadly unfinished so far, but still an amazing read! Lots of Obi-Wan, too, by the way.
If you know stories you want me to recommend, let me know!
