Urokodaki's House (Tanjirou's POV)
As Tanjirou continued to ponder everything. He was resting.
He managed to beat Makomo in a spar that he was sure he would lose.
But instead, he won.
He should've felt happy. He had managed to properly perform a breathing style. Properly managed to alter his breathing to support the movement of his body whilst performing the breathing style forms.
And he was able to defeat Makomo after a hard-fought sparring.
He had every reason to be happy.
But unfortunately, he couldn't. Even if he was finally progressing, there were still uncertainties that he was feeling.
For one, his sister.
Nezuko was still asleep, and he saw no signs of her waking up. This worried him immensely, and this worry turned to feelings of guilt and failure.
For Tanjirou, it was a symbol of his failure. His weakness is being unable to protect his sister when she needed it.
Instead, Nezuko herself had to be the one to strike Sabito down.
And she even destroyed the boulder Urokodaki had given the two of them. Tanjirou hadn't even tried to strike and slash the boulder. All this time, he was focused on dancing, eating human food, and altering his breathing.
All this time, Tanjirou was wondering if everything was truly worth it.
His family… He couldn't remember much, besides the darkest aspects of living with them…
Tanjirou continued to ponder the struggles he faced. Perhaps it was repetitive, but Tanjirou never got the time to recover.
He was tortured, ripped limb by limb, by another man who killed everyone, and before Tanjirou knew it, he awoke as a demon, both he and Nezuko.
But even during the critical moments of his life with his family, it wasn't pretty.
He still remembers the cold ground, his entire body shaking when he was running down the mountain, tired, injured, and dirty. He could see the sometimes horrified look of the townspeople as he frantically made it inside the temple.
There, he would be able to be cleaned and patched up, where he would put on the suit and dance.
He didn't want to reveal to them why he was coming down so dirty.
And because he was seen as a kid by many, he said the logical thing.
"I'm just clumsy and I keep tripping going down the mountain." Tanjirou nervously explained. Of course, a nervous child was just too cute to be lying, and so Tanjirou got away with it.
But of course, the injuries and bruises he had, not to mention his sometimes tattered clothing, almost make him look like he was in poverty.
And that wasn't necessarily false.
Even if his family sold coal, they still were poor. They sometimes lived in poverty. Sometimes, days when nobody bought their coal, caused times when they would go days without adequate food.
Alas, Tanjirou knew his family was fine with such conditions.
They were never the type to complain about their situations. All this time, they were sometimes in poverty, specifically because of their lack of occupation, and stable income.
Plus, they didn't live near the village. They lived in isolation on the top of his mountain. It was something his ancestors lived on for around five hundred years.
The fact that because of a demon attack, they were now forced to break that five hundred traditions, hurt Tanjirou.
But even then, life wasn't easy or satisfactory at the time, because of the pain he endured. He remembers the cold floor he would lay on, after being pushed violently to the ground. The times when he was stuck outside the house, sitting down, waiting to be let back in.
The times he would take off his clothes and see the numerous scars that accumulated on his body. The burn marks… Nobody would want a boy as scarred as him…
That was if the girl got past the large birthmark on the left side of his forehead.
But even inside the house was sometimes more dangerous than being outside…
Especially when his father was around, and angry if he didn't show improvements or any signs of affinities… All he could do was hope he went unnoticed or ran outside…
But he rarely made it outside… Tanjirou shook his head, trying to forget everything afterward.
Alas, he knew it was all futile. He was now, in the present.
Just like Gestalt's Theory, Tanjirou's body was in the present. He couldn't let his mind go down in the past or future.
But alas, this wasn't easier done than said.
Tanjirou knew that his mind would always be dysfunctional with his body. Just like how he always thought about the trauma of his past. How dysfunctional his own family was…
All in all, all he knew was failure… pain… and punishment… Not to mention the torture he endured.
Through the process of duality, his mind and body were always separate beings, yet connected to work together.
Alas, if both dualities were different, then it was probably natural that there could be a dysfunction.
At least that's what Tanjirou thought.
All this time, he hoped, that just like how his body could adapt to breathe properly and digest human food, he hoped his mental state could adapt like his body.
Therefore, when Tanjirou went out of the house, it was now nighttime.
A month since Nezuko fell asleep. A whole month…
And four months since his family was killed.
Tanjirou had a lot to be unhappy about. But even then, he wasn't the type to complain.
He was told that by his father when he was complaining about his failure and lack of progress.
Even if he was going to complain, he could use this time to continue and try.
He had to contribute to his worth. He had to find and build the value he sought after and sought.
He wanted this entire time to find value.
But for now, his sister was the only thing he felt value towards.
He felt some value in being with his sister.
Now that his sister was possibly sleeping, or even dead, Tanjirou worried that not only would he lose his sister…
But he also worried he's lost his value…
What would he be known for if Nezuko died?
What would he do?
He'd be the only one remaining in his family…
The most useless child is the only one alive. He couldn't let his own tainted, tortured blood be the one to continue his bloodline.
It had to be Nezuko. She was at least deemed respectable by the family.
Even if she suffered at the hands of their parents, she was in a better position than him.
He was tainted…
He was worthless…
He was of no value…
"A man of no value…" Tanjirou looked down, "I'm a man of no value… If Nezuko dies…"
"Breathe… Like Hinokami Kagura…" Tanjirou's face recoiled when he heard the voice of his father. His father's calm voice.
Even if Tanjirou wanted to hate his father for what he did… Even if every time Tanjirou heard his father's voice echo in his mind, he felt his blood boil, with a sense of self-hatred.
However, the mention of the Hinokami Kagura only further cemented what Tanjirou clutched towards.
Already, he was dependent on Hinokami Kagura for his mental fortitude. Now that his own father's voice was mentioning the Hinokami Kagura, it was making Tanjirou hold onto the dance a lot more, to help with his emotions.
Whenever Tanjirou continued to feel down, he began to dance.
And thankfully, even in the dance he performed, Hinokami Kagura, Tanjirou felt like he improved. It was phenomenal. He thought he had already mastered the Hinokami Kagura, but the fact that he was still improving was something else.
In short, Tanjirou was still improving, meaning that he still had a lot to learn about the dance.
With that, Tanjirou got up, ignoring the figure of Urokodaki staring at him.
Currently, he was chewing on a grapefruit that he was enjoying. It seems that Tanjirou was starting to enjoy the food, as he was able to taste it finally.
"Man, I forgot how good these kinds of foods are." Tanjirou enjoyed the food, clearly content with being able to taste his food yet again.
He didn't have to rely purely on demon flesh now. Tanjirou could theoretically eat everything. Almost.
But he chose his path.
He chose where and what his lifestyle could be.
"Impressive." The voice of Urokodaki caused Tanjirou to turn his head and face the masked individual.
"What is?" Tanjirou asked as he seemed relatively calm.
However, despite this, Urokodaki could smell the tension and uncertainty coming from Tanjirou's figure.
"You're able to properly consume human food now," Urokodaki confirmed.
"Oh, that grape? Yeah, I was able to taste it finally… I forgot how good food could taste…" Tanjirou sighed, as a sense of ease began to envelop him. It was quite the time since he felt at ease about everything.
"I may be able to live a mostly human life again…" Tanjirou sighed, clearly at ease regarding the fact he was able to have another human trait.
He was glad that he was making progress, to become almost as human as he could.
"I have a question for you, Tanjirou." Urokodaki then asked Tanjirou.
"Yes, what is it?" Tanjirou asked, clearly confused about what Urokodaki was suddenly going to ask him.
"Do you want to live a normal life?" Urokodaki asked.
At this, Tanjirou tilted his head in confusion, "A normal life? What do you mean?"
"It's simple. Do you want to assimilate back into human society and live a life as a human?" Urokodaki asked, clarifying his point.
Tanjirou looked confused, "But I thought you said because we were demons, we couldn't assimilate with humans, so why are you asking now?" Tanjirou asked.
"Well, it seems that besides your weakness to the sun, you may be able to live fine. You can eat human food, whilst suppressing your demonic instincts, and can dance. You could easily get a job for dancing." Urokodaki explained.
"But what about Nezuko?" Tanjirou asked, clearly looking over to the sleeping figure of Nezuko.
"Nezuko will probably be within the realm of the demon slayer corps," Urokodaki confirmed.
Already upon hearing that, Tanjirou already knew his answer.
"No." Tanjirou bluntly told Urokodaki.
This made Urokodaki remain silent, before he spoke back up, "What?"
"I don't wish to live a normal life. I will continue to be with Nezuko." Tanjirou firmly told Urokodaki.
"Even if you could live your life as a human?" Urokodaki asked.
"Especially that!" Tanjirou yelled. "If me. A demon can make so much progress in becoming human, than other demons could too! Besides even then, I can't leave my sister behind!"
At this, Urokodaki stared down at Tanjirou, "Even if you are unable to properly perform water breathing?"
Tanjirou remained silent, "I can do it. I did it yesterday."
Urokodaki didn't believe this, however even if he could see the confidence from Tanjirou, he couldn't believe it.
"Well then, show me," Urokodaki spoke.
Almost immediately, Tanjirou gripped his wooden blade, passing one to Urokodaki.
Urokodaki looked at Tanjirou in intrigue. "I didn't mean to spar me, I meant to show me all ten forms consecutively, if you can truly do it."
At this, Tanjirou nodded.
"I will." And so, Tanjirou did exactly that.
Urokodaki could smell the determination from Tanjirou.
And this was so unlike before.
Before, Tanjirou seemed timid. He seemed unsure about himself.
He would degrade himself to being incapable of performing such feats.
It was the main reason why Urokodaki tried to get Tanjirou to try and live a normal life.
But alas, even he knew it was rather futile, considering they both were demons. No demon could remain within a single place of residence.
Unless Tanjirou lived alone, on the land, eating fruits and the likes to sustain himself…
But that wasn't entirely perfect for Tanjirou.
But now, while Tanjirou still seemed to struggle with a sense of inferiority and meagerness, he could tell that once the boy was in action, he focused heavily.
His insecurities washed away and turned to determination.
And it made sense, for he was with his sister.
If his sister was the connection to make Tanjirou feel worthy, then it would not be best to separate the two.
The reason for this was simple. In short, Tanjirou would probably live a life of mental sorrow if he was separated from his sister.
Therefore, the two siblings needed each other.
And Urokodaki couldn't bring it in himself to separate the two siblings.
Seeing Tanjirou go over to Nezuko's sleeping figure, worried about whether she would wake up, and worried about her wellbeing.
He saw Tanjirou take care of Nezuko, cleaning her skin, and making sure she was comfortable in any way.
To Urokodaki, it seemed that Tanjirou was working to find worth and value.
He could smell it. Tanjirou was not a confident being.
He saw himself as someone worthless. Not worthy to be where he was.
But behind that darkness, held a beacon of light. The few times when he saw Tanjirou perform, he saw a bright light. A star.
Tanjirou was a bright kid. Figuratively and literally.
He was a kid who knew the darkness the world held. But even then, he made himself the torch to light it up for the others in the darkness.
Urokodaki could tell that Tanjirou held a sense of burden to himself, but even then was able to help those who needed him.
Behind the darkness, was a kid who shined like the sun.
And so, when Tanjirou began to perform each form, one through ten, not showing signs of discomfort or strain, Urokodaki was impressed.
He saw the determination of Tanjirou. He saw that even though he was doing it, he still held a sense of degradation towards himself.
All this time, Tanjirou was still doubting himself, and it hurt Urokodaki. It reminded him very much of Tomioka…
Both kids suffered so much as a child… Whether different, it culminated in similar thoughts inside their heads.
But despite all of those doubts and self-degradation, Tanjirou performed them with concentration and focus. He was able to suppress or find a different purpose to perform it.
He wasn't doing this for himself… So what was he doing this for?
"Tanjirou." Urokodaki asked.
"Yes, sensei?" Tanjirou asked, turning back one he finished the forms Urokodaki had taught him all those times.
"Why are you fighting demons, exactly?" Urokodaki pressed Tanjirou.
"Huh? Why am I wanting to fight demons?" Tanjirou asked.
"Yes. I can smell like you, kid. I can smell the doubt and self-hatred you hold in yourself. I can smell how you feel unworthy of being here. I can smell how little you believe in yourself. You aren't fighting for yourself. If so, then why are you fighting?" Urokodaki asked. "You lack purpose it seems."
Tanjirou looked down, "For a time, I didn't know…"
Urokodaki sighed. He was a kid who was confused about his place in the world. He wanted to find value in his life, but the demon slayer corps was a place only for those who had lost so much already and were willing to lose more, not afraid to.
"But after my fight for survival against Tomioka… I know why now." Tanjirou sighed. "I'm fighting to cure my sister… I'm fighting to become human again… I'm fighting because I failed my sister… I failed again…"
"Failed how?" Urokodaki asked. "She and you are still alive."
"But the rest of my family isn't. I was deemed a failure by everyone… To the point that they all stopped caring for me, and neglected me… You know who was the only one to still care for me?"
"I'm assuming it was Nezuko?" Urokodaki asked. While he had a feeling that Tanjirou had gone through some semblance of childhood abuse and neglect, it seems he also was dealing with some forms of psychological abuse, to the point that he still sees himself in such a self-deprecating manner.
"Yes." Tanjirou nodded. "Even when I failed, she still took care of me… No matter the consequences… Even if she got beaten for caring for a failure like me… She still did it… because she believed that I could eventually learn…" Tanjirou sighed.
"I mean you seem to have finally learned without it hurting or putting strain on you," Urokodaki commented.
"I guess… But the only reason I'm staying is because Nezuko believed in me all those times… So now, I have to believe in Nezuko, and hope she stays a human so that I can return the favor for what she did… She always believed in me, and I failed her every single time…" Tanjirou looked down in shame. Urokodaki could smell a bit of shame coming from Tanjirou.
However, when he turned his head back up, his face turned to one of determination. "I must not fail her this time. I will turn her back to a human because she doesn't deserve this."
Urokodaki merely looked on, clearly observing the actual stance Tanjirou had.
It was clear to Urokodaki that Tanjirou had managed to finish the cycles. He saw it himself.
The boy had improved immensely, not only in his water-breathing forms but also in his ability to eat and consume human food.
All the while his breathing technique also improved immensely.
And the best and most remarkable part for Tanjirou was that this all took around a month.
At this time, Tanjirou seemingly made more progress within the month than the amount he performed in the first three months he was here.
It made Urokodaki wonder what Tanjirou did to be able to perform and progress so well.
"Tanjirou," Urokodaki called out to the demonic brother.
"Yes?" Tanjirou asked, clearly surprised that Urokodaki was still calling him out.
"Where did you make progress to be able to perform water breathing without many strains?" Urokodaki asked Tanjirou, who scratched his head.
"I danced the Hinokami Kagura." Tanjirou meagerly explained.
"The very dance you've talked about?" Urokodaki asked.
Tanjirou nodded at that, "Yes, that very dance… Specifically, it allowed me to alter my breathing to fit both for the dance and for demon slaying."
"Is that so?" Urokodaki asked.
It was clear to Urokodaki that Tanjirou was always a weird student.
He knew very well why he thought of Tanjirou as a unique case. Regardless, that didn't mean Tanjirou was a lost cause.
It was clear that Tanjirou was able to perform water breathing finally. Without much strain, Tanjirou was able to perform it.
All this time, Urokodaki had told Tanjirou that everything was done. But even then, Tanjirou continued.
He knew the poor boy had quite the stress, but even then he focused on training and was progressing at quite a respectable rate.
To Urokodaki, Tanjirou looked stronger. Even his hair had grown quite a bit, now being of shoulder length.
"What is your dance called, again?" Urokodaki asked, clearly intrigued now by the dance. It was something Tanjirou talked a lot about, and there was a reason.
"I think it's time I observed this dance for myself," Urokodaki confirmed.
Tanjirou looked a bit shocked at Urokodaki's statement/
"Are you sure?" Tanjirou asked.
Urokodaki nodded. "I am sure. I am intrigued enough to see this for myself."
Tanjirou nodded, "Well, that's fine… I'll dance when the sun sets, so you can watch if you want."
At this, Urokodaki remained silent. This confused Tanjirou, but he shrugged his shoulders and continued to train.
All this time, he was making progress.
It was time he was finally able to make himself feel worthy and valued.
Tanjirou sighed in satisfaction.
It was here did he encounter Makomo yet again.
"Hello, Tanjirou." Makomo smiled at the boy.
"Hey, Makomo… How are you doing?" Tanjirou asked.
"I'm fine. I told Sabito about your progress." Makomo explained.
"You did?" Tanjirou raised an eyebrow at that. "Why?"
Makomo chuckled, "It's silly. He's waiting for that rematch from you!"
This stumped Tanjirou, "He wants a rematch?" This was surprising for him. Why did he want a rematch from someone he saw as inferior?
"Why would he want a rematch with someone like me? Wouldn't it be better for him to fight Nezuko?" Tanjirou asked.
Makomo shook her head, "He says he wants to see if you get stronger."
Tanjirou sighed in apathy, "Well that's just great…"
He deadpanned, which made Makomo chuckle. "Oh, don't be a deadbeat."
"All he's going to do is call me a baby and the likes… It gets repetitive and boring…" Tanjirou sighed.
"I guess. But he means well." Makomo explained.
"Sure he does…" Tanjirou rolled his eyes. "All I care about is that my sister is safe."
Makomo tilted her head, "Why are you always putting yourself down?"
This confused Tanjirou, "How so?"
"Whenever you talk about praises and the likes, you always refer to your sister, Nezuko. You never take praise for yourself. Why is that? I already know what you see of yourself as."
Tanjirou sighed, "Well I'm the older brother. I'm just always praising my little sister… I think it's nothing more than a healthy sibling relationship."
"But you sometimes deflect all praise you get and instead give it to Nezuko," Makomo explained.
"Is there something wrong with that?" Tanjirou asked.
"Not necessarily, but you must be careful with this. What's to say you or Nezuko either develops jealousy towards each other." Makomo asked.
"Jealousy? Why would I ever get jealous of Nezuko's achievements? I always give her the praise even when I feel behind." Tanjirou explained.
"That's what everyone says… What's to say Nezuko doesn't feel the same way? What if she feels jealous of you?" Makomo asked.
Tanjirou raised his eyebrow in disbelief. "Why would Nezuko be jealous of someone like me?"
At this, Makomo pointed her finger toward Tanjirou, "You're doing it again, Tanjirou. Stop looking down on yourself."
But Tanjirou continued to deny it. "I'm not looking down on myself… I'm just placing Nezuko on a podium for her progress in water breathing. I mean she was able to perform and use it efficiently and quicker than me." Tanjirou praised his sister yet again.
Makomo could hear the depreciation he was giving himself in the process, yet again. Makomo knew it.
"And you just used yourself to compare Nezuko." Makomo pointed out.
Tanjirou was getting a bit sick of Makomo's pestering.
"Listen, Makomo, I appreciate what you are trying to do, but can you not continue this?" Tanjirou asked.
"And why is that?" Makomo asked. "I can't let someone like you look so down on yourself."
"Just shut it." Tanjirou sighed, "I'm fine. I don't know why you think there's something wrong with me."
As Tanjirou told Makomo this, he thought back to what his father had told him. The rough nature of his father's words hit close to Tanjirou, as a memory clouded over Tanjirou's thoughts.
"If you are wanting to truly be a reliable person, then never be weak. Never show weakness. In this world, you must be productive. You must not cry, you must not show weakness, and never let yourself be boastful and cocky." The words of his father once again clouded his mind.
"Never tell anyone your true feelings… People will take advantage of them." That was something his father had never been the type to say.
His father was always a calm individual, never showing many emotions.
Perhaps that was what he did.
And considering his father never showed weakness, even as an illness continued to ravage and destroy his body, he never once complained or showed tears.
Even on his deathbed, he was incredibly calm.
It was almost impressive if Tanjirou didn't develop such animosity towards his father, his mother, and the rest of his family.
But the last words Tanjirou ever heard from his father…
"Make sure you don't fail this family…-" He never got to finish what he said, for his lungs and breath gave out.
He fell into a coughing fit, unable to speak.
Tanjirou could tell that he wanted to say more, but he just couldn't anymore.
His body had given up.
But those final words caught Tanjirou off guard.
Even near his death, his father was seemingly telling him to do something without fail.
Almost… as if he knew the fate of the rest of his family…
Tanjirou sighed. "I'm going to head out." Tanjirou abruptly stated, clearly no longer wanting to talk to Makomo.
"Wait," Makomo called out. Tanjirou stopped his walk.
"I'm sorry… I just-"
"I understand why you are saying this." Tanjirou sighed, very tired. "You don't have to worry about me. I have my goals."
"Are you going to stop degrading yourself once that happens?" Makomo asked.
"Of course… If I find value in my life as a demon slayer, then perhaps I can do it…" Tanjirou remained hopeful. He didn't want to act like this was never going to happen.
It went back to the whole of humans becoming dynamic.
Every biological being was dynamic. They weren't the same.
"What are you going to do now?" Makomo asked.
"I'm going to do what I've been doing for the whole month. Dance from sunset to sunrise." Tanjirou explained.
"I see." Makomo pondered.
"Also, apparently Urokodaki is going to watch me dance this time," Tanjirou added.
This seemed to make Makomo a bit uncomfortable, but she tried her best to ignore this.
"Oh, that's nice… Maybe Sabito will need to speak to me, son." Makomo mumbled to herself.
"Is something wrong?" Tanjirou asked.
"Not really. Just didn't expect Urokodaki would be interested in watching you dance." Makomo explained, successfully managing to shift past her thoughts.
Tanjirou chuckled, "I thought the same. Urokodaki was someone I didn't expect would be interested."
"Is there any reason?" Makomo asked.
"He thinks too about the Hinokami Kagura has some connections to breathing techniques," Tanjirou explained.
"I mean, I feel it too… But I'm no expert on demon-slaying, unlike you and Urokodaki… Maybe if I show a demon slayer my dance, they could see and understand something I don't see." Tanjirou added.
"That is smart… I mean I wasn't necessarily a strong demon slayer, but even I could see something within the dance." Makomo explained.
At this, Tanjirou eyed Makomo, "Weren't you the one telling me not to self-deprecate yourself?"
Makomo raised an eyebrow, "What?"
Tanjirou sighed, "You are strong. You were so difficult for me to defeat and strike… We took 20 whole minutes…"
Makomo smiled sadly.
To her, even if Tanjirou himself had some issues deep within him, that didn't stop him from helping others when they needed it.
She originally thought that those kinds of acts were only for Tanjirou's sister, Nezuko. However, this might be Tanjirou's personality. A personality he couldn't show because of the circumstances.
Almost like he was never able to show a protective side before, but is now shining out.
Tanjirou was shining right now. Especially since he was able to properly perform water breathing a lot better this time.
Before she could continue, Tanjirou realized the moon was coming out.
"Oh! Sorry, Makomo, but I must perform the Hinokami Kagura once again." Tanjirou explained, as he picked up his stuff and frantically began to change into the proper clothes, wearing the mask, and the hanufuda earrings.
Well actually, Tanjirou decided to just wear the hanufuda earrings consistently this time. He liked it just enough to wear it as his natural attire.
All in the meantime, Tanjirou got into the candles that he lit up in the proper form.
And before Tanjirou knew it, he began to dance the Hinokami Kagura.
A dance he once again felt empowered by a dance he loved to perform.
Even if it tired him, he no longer felt himself straining immensely.
Whether it was because of his demonic body, or because his breathing technique was finally able to be a hybrid, capable of maintaining his strength for both dancing and the forms.
Regardless of the exact answer, Tanjirou knew he had found a perfect middle ground.
This wasn't it. He still was blowing into the gourds and was now able to regularly blow into the numbered 5 gourds.
Of course, Tanjirou could, at a maximal capacity, could destroy a numbered 8 gourd, but this caused his entire body to be strained, and he would need to take some time to recover.
Tanjirou was making quite the progress.
Urokodaki noticed this. Tanjirou was growing at a quicker rate in the most recent month, compared to the first three months.
And now, he was beginning to find out why exactly this was the case.
"So, this is the Hinokami Kagura, huh?" Urokodaki asked himself, clearly seeing what Makomo saw all those times before.
Of course, the flaming visuals that were surrounding Tanjirou's body were purely visual, but it was something fellow demons and demon slayers could see. Their spiritual core was matured during demon slayer training to be able to spot such details.
"From what I can see, while the dance seems to be, a dance… Some aspects of it speak to me of being a potential form…" Urokodaki noticed.
And it wasn't until half an hour into the dance did Urokodaki realize another thing.
"Wait… It's a dance that is continued over and over again, in a cycle… That means…" Urokodaki was pondering. "This means that this dance might be Tanjirou performing different moves repeatedly."
All he could see from Tanjirou's Hinokami Kagura was the exact reason why Tanjirou was able to improve so quickly.
"So this is exactly why he can break the gourds so easily… Why he excelled at breathing techniques but struggled a bit when it came to the styles and forms…" Urokodaki continued to ponder.
Needless to say, the dance itself was very phenomenal and beautiful, in Urokodaki's own opinion.
Mainly because he could tell that the dance certainly was an advanced technique, using a breathing technique that was seemingly foreign to even him.
It deviated just a bit to make it unique enough to seem different from demon slayers' breathing styles and forms.
If Urokodaki himself tried to do this, he would probably collapse after a bit.
And considering how Tanjirou had explained fondly how he learned the dance within 6 months, it impressed Urokodaki more.
To Urokodaki, it showed himself the capabilities Tanjrou had, even as a human.
Why did coal burners maintain a traditional dance that held such a close relation to demon slayers' breathing styles and forms?
This was a unique set of demons he found.
Now, with Tanjirou's dance being shown to Urokodaki, he knew exactly what he should do for Tanjirou.
Specifically, seeing the dance.
Urokodaki specifically noticed the moves the dance required. Some included circular slashes, another included twists of the body, another included the backflip, and another used a lot of spiraling motions.
Horizontal slashes, spiraling motions, circular slashes, twists and turns, combination strikes, all in a fluid whole motion.
These were sword techniques. Urokodaki saw this.
And it was in a dance.
Tanjirou knew a dance, that could be utilized in the form of sword techniques.
All this time, the dance Tanjirou fondly talked about, was the very one that he had an affinity for.
It wasn't water breathing Tanjirou was strong in, Urokodaki knew that, unlike Nezuko…
No, it was the dance he performed all his life. It was the dance that may have been a long-lost breathing style that the demon slayers had forgotten about.
Regardless, Urokodaki knew what Tanjrou needed to do, now.
"If my mind serves me correctly, the boy had a book about the dance he performs right now…" Urokodaki continued to think to himself.
Throughout this entire time, Makomo had seemingly disappeared, and only Urokodaki was watching Tanjirou dance.
As Tanjirou continued dancing, Urokodaki decided to quickly go in and look for the book that Tanjirou would always have with him.
To Urokodaki, it was always strange why the boy had always had a book alongside him.
While many of his students never really brought objects of possession alongside them.
Usually, they had more pressing matters or were too traumatized to remember something like a personal belonging.
That was if they didn't suffer a demon attack.
So it was strange that Tanjirou held onto the book regarding contents that Urokodaki assumed, to be about the dance.
In the end, Urokodaki connected what the book had to do with the dance, and the dance itself connected with Tanjirou's mind of ease.
Urokodaki smelled the ease Tanjirou had. The sense of peace the boy was enveloped in.
To Urokodaki, it was almost as if all of Tanjirou's worries were washed away in the visual flames that danced alongside his body.
The flames looked so powerful, yet tranquil. Just like the dance itself.
It was tranquil and smooth, yet fluid, and powerful. It had a hidden power.
And Urokodaki could see some semblances of what appeared to be sword strikes.
But not any sword strikes.
Many typical sword strikes were thrusting motions.
But demon slayers emphasized slashing, because the only conventional method to purely rid a demon, is to slash their necks.
Therefore, many strikes relating to the forms of breathing styles, or at least the most powerful ones, had to do with horizontal or vertical slashes.
And that was what most of the dance consisted of.
Slashes, that reminded Urokodaki very much of demon slayer breathing styles.
It was not a coincidence. So when Urokodaki returned out, taking hold of the book Tanjirou always had on, he realized it was a bit old and dirty.
"Must be an old book… No matter." Urokodaki sighed as he watched Tanjirou dance.
And watched.
Ultimately, he decided to go do his chores, for he had more productive things to do than watch a kid who was dancing throughout the night.
"Perhaps I should ask Tanjirou himself for permission before I look into something close to him." Urokodaki thought to himself before he went to bed.
When he woke up, he saw that it was almost dusk.
Fitting, he made his way to see if the demon boy was still dancing.
And to his shock, he still was.
"To move your body for almost 12 hours nonstop… It's almost… impossible for a mere human… Even demon slayers get exhausted after using their breathing forms with time, especially if they get and sustain some injuries along the way…" Urokodaki thought to himself.
"And being a demon seems to not have any significant improvements… I saw that first hand with the strain he originally suffered from…" Urokodaki added.
And so, as dusk turned to day, Tanjirou eventually finished, and quickly made his way inside the house, safe from the sun's rays.
All the while Urokodaki stared at Tanjirou, behind his mask, was an impressive expression of contentment.
Whilst Tanjirou was probably going to sleep, Urokodaki thought more about what he could do to help Tanjirou.
"Tanjirou," Urokodaki called out. Immediately, Tanjirou turned his face to meet Urokodaki.
"Oh! Urokodaki! Did you enjoy the dance I did?" Tanjirou asked.
Urokodaki pondered, "I found it very interesting…"
"Is that so? I'm glad it piqued your interest." Tanjirou gave Urokodaki a small smile.
That smile was something that Tanjirou was giving out through the ease and sense of satisfaction he was giving. All the while Urokodaki could smell the relief Tanjirou had.
Once again, Urokodaki could see the positive influence this dance had on Tanjirou's mental fortitude.
As Urokodaki watched Tanjirou looked confused, motioning for him to continue, Urokodaki looked at the book he was holding Tanjirou.
Almost immediately, Tanjirou's eyes widened in panic. "Did you take this from me?" He asked, clearly getting a bit agitated as he was trying to quickly grab the book back.
However, Urokodaki shook his head and placed his hand between the book and Tanjirou's hands.
"It was within your room. It was fine. However, I wish to read this book. I'm very curious to see if it holds any history, the specific forms of the dance look very familiar."
At this, Tanjirou looked unsure, "I see… I guess I can give it to you for now, but can I have it back for the next time I perform Hinokami Kagura?"
Urokodaki nodded at that, "Of course. This book will be safe in my hands."
Tanjirou gave a large sigh of relief, which confused Urokodaki, "Thank you, Tanjirou.
"Did the Hinokami Kagura, in any way help you with your breathing?" Urokodaki confirmed with Tanjirou, asking him for this.
Tanjirou nodded, "Yes. I was confused for a bit, but eventually, when I started dancing and training my lungs, it was helping. Even though I'm unsure why…"
"I have a feeling why," Urokodaki explained.
"Is it to do with demon slaying?" Tanjirou asked. "Because I've had a gnawing feeling about it…"
Urokodaki nodded, "Same. I want to read the contents of this book so that I can confirm myself."
"Oh, I see. I guess it would make sense… But I don't know anything really about demon slaying, so I guess it would work if you would… Since you're an expert…" Tanjirou meagerly mumbled.
Urokodaki could see the awkwardness, and nervousness Tanjirou was showing regarding the book.
"I promise Tanjirou, when you wake up for your next dance, the book will be back in your room, alright?"
"Alright…" Tanjirou mumbled. "You can take it for a bit…"
"Thank you." Urokodaki nodded, "Make sure you at least take a nap, Tanjirou."
At this, Tanjirou flinched, looking down, realizing that Urokodaki had caught on to the fact that Tanjirou had not once slept ever since Nezuko fell asleep.
He continued to remain awake after a whole month, and that worried Urokodaki, for multiple reasons he felt he didn't need to explain.
And as Tanjirou seemingly went to relax in his room, and hopefully sleep, Urokodaki sat down and began to look at the contents of the book Tanjirou always kept close to him.
"Seems that the book goes into the history and the origins of the dance," Urokodaki told himself.
He saw what appeared to be a legendary individual who wielded the power of the sun.
"So… this individual was thought to be blessed by a Sun God so that he was strong enough to defeat even the strongest of creatures…? According to the book, it was a creature that was humanoid, but superhuman… That sounds familiar…" Urokodaki thought.
"So then… What about their family bloodline…? It doesn't seem to mention their bloodline…" Urokodaki thought, "Unless the individual did not bear any offspring, I cannot understand why this individual wouldn't be heard of through their blood…" Urokodaki pondered to himself, mumbling.
He could smell that Tanjirou was up, and practicing his techniques, rather than sleeping or resting, as Urokodaki recommended him to do.
However, Urokodaki focused more on the book he was reading.
"So, the dance consists of numerous dance motions and forms that are repeated until the sun rises… The idea is that the individual becomes one with the sun, praying to the sun god for protection from the external world..." Urokodaki thought as he has begun to read the actual contents of the dance.
"But even then, the motions of the dance are somewhat intriguing… With the motions and the amount of exertion, one must endure performing this for 12 hours… A breathing technique would be needed to help push a human to move past their stamina boundaries…" Urokodaki thought.
And that was exactly what he saw next.
The contents of the breathing technique were then told.
And this was what confused Urokodaki.
"The breathing technique is almost exclusively for demon slayers… How does one learn it from a dance…?" Urokodaki asked himself. "While there are examples of some humans being very powerful because they accidentally learn a breathing technique, the fact this family had a tradition that involved such a technique… There is no doubt in my mind that these demons had some form of the ancestry of demon slayers…" Urokodaki confirmed to his mind.
Even then, Urokodaki was unsure if the demon siblings would even remember them.
Would Tanjirou and Nezuko be able to remember the ancestors who were demon slayers?
Highly unlikely.
The demonic transformation messed with the minds of those who were once humans. Needless to say, it all made sense…
"Presuming the demon king doesn't want demons to remember what he did to their lives as a human, it would make sense that Tanjirou and Nezuko wouldn't necessarily remember who the demon king is, or even anything about it… But perhaps he could… Tanjirou did seem to remember the attack on his family with great detail… I guess I'll need to ask Tanjirou." Urokodaki thought.
Despite all of this, it seemed to confirm what Urokodaki thought.
The twelve forms that Urokodaki saw in the dance, were indeed sword motions.
And the book confirmed that.
Those were the toughest portions of the dance and for the right reasons.
This required the limbs to move out as fast, which required the most oxygen to breathe in.
All this time, it further cemented what Urokodaki thought.
"So those twelve moves… Were breathing forms?" Urokodaki asked.
The book never confirmed this, but seeing all the traits that remained similar to typical breathing styles other demon slayers used, it made sense for Urokodaki.
"Alright, I guess perhaps it's time to teach Tanjirou to perform this dance and turn it into a breathing style…" Urokodaki confirmed for himself.
Once he confirmed and finished his motivation and goals, he finally decided it was time to give the book back to Tanjirou.
And funnily enough, once Urokodaki made his way back into his house, to give it back to Tanjirou, specifically to place it in the room Tanjirou and Nezuko were in.
Once he saw this, Tanjirou immediately got up and took the book straight from Urokodaki's hand.
This specifically made Urokodaki a bit confused, as to why exactly Tanjirou was so close to this book.
It was almost like this book was something Tanjirou used as a clutch for something.
"Tanjirou," Urokodaki called out to him.
"Yes?" Tanjirou answered back.
"I've looked into the contents of the book about Hinokami Kagura." Urokodaki started to explain as he eyed Tanjirou's expression.
While it seemed to be resting, with a slight frown, Urokodaki saw a deep sense of relief coming from Tanjirou, clearly from the fact that his book was safe.
"Yes, what about it?"
"I've noticed there were twelve distinct moves that you performed while dancing that seemed to be quite powerful." Urokodaki explained, "Twelve forms that seemed very similar to sword swings of that similar to demon slayers."
"Really?" Tanjirou asked, "But even if that's the case, what is the connection?"
"It's from one of your ancestors. I want you to think closely. Can you think of a time when you had an ancestor as a demon slayer?" Urokodaki asked.
Almost immediately, Tanjirou's eyes widened in realization.
"Our ancestors are the result of two friends' children eventually getting together. However, how everything happened was very interesting. It originally belonged to my ancestors from my maternal side, but they eventually were given it as a present."
"For the two friends, unfortunately, suffered a tragedy when they were young. Both of their wives died respectively, causing them to raise their respective children on their own."
"They died because of demons. Both suffered through a demon attack. While both were out, some other demons got in and killed their wives, thankfully, they managed to save their respective children. Eventually, both were able to raise their children, a 1-year-old girl, and a 3-year-old boy. Both were not blood-related, but became married, taking over the house as a result."
It suddenly all made sense to Tanjirou, now.
The story his father told him when he was only four years old. A year before his father quickly descended a path of what appeared to be an obsession with sword styles and swinging…
"You see, we can use the flower as incense, so the smell you have sometimes comes from those very flowers, keeping us safe from most demons. In addition, there are many humans out there. Humans are skillful enough with the blade to slay demons. They are called demon slayers."
Needless to say, all this meant that Tanjirou did have some knowledge of demon slayers all this time.
Not a lot, but more than a common human.
"Well…" Tanjirou started, and he began to explain everything to Urokodaki.
And this was something that made Urokodaki intrigued once again.
Just like that, Urokodaki was learning more about the fact, that these two demon siblings were unlike anything he'd ever met.
"So they do have ancestors who were demon slayers… If that's the case, then they must be from an offspring of supposed coal burners, based on what Tanjirou told me previously." Urokodaki thought.
"Well. I see. This makes more sense." Urokodaki concluded.
"Concludes what?" Tanjirou asked, clearly confused by what Urokodaki was concluding.
"Based on the timeframe of everything based on both the book and what you are telling me, this individual who was, seemingly blessed by the sun god, was using a breathing style." Urokodaki hypothesized.
"So you think… That the dance is used for demon slaying?" Tanjirou asked.
"Yes." Urokodaki nodded. "It would make sense."
"But then, why wouldn't the breathing styles be passed down to our families?" Tanjirou asked.
"Who knows? Perhaps for protection, and longevity." Urokodaki responded, now knowing himself, "But for now, all I can say is that this book identifies twelve forms that are all like breathing forms. The fact that I was able to identify these twelve forms, which the book confirms my suspicions make me feel that it would be beneficial to teach you how to perform those forms in the form of demon slaying." Urokodaki explained.
At this, Tanjirou looked down. However, Urokodaki could see that it wasn't necessarily from looking down on himself, but rather uncertainty.
"Do you think I could learn this?" Tanjirou asked.
"Yes. I mean, you told me it took you 6 months to learn the whole dance. I estimate it could take you another 2 weeks to properly use those forms on the blade." Urokodaki told Tanjirou, clearly trying to cheer him up.
"You think?" Tanjirou asked.
"Yes. It's very easy, considering you managed to perform all the hardest parts of the breathing technique and styles. All you need to do is emphasize the bodily motions with a blade, and thus properly perform it." Urokodaki explained.
At this, Tanjirou sighed.
Urokodaki planned this.
Perhaps this was a hidden breathing style in dance, clearly for the survival of individuals.
This would explain why Tanjirou and Nezuko's family both strayed away from demon slaying. There were multiple reasons why a family would stray away from the demon slayers.
Regardless, Urokodaki knew now that Tanjirou had a special breathing style that was potentially long lost…
Especially if it's back from the Sengoku Era, then it was perhaps among the strongest breathing styles.
The Sengoku Era was a period marked by the strongest demon slayers at the time. While poorly understood, it was a golden age for demon slayers.
Unfortunately, the quality of demon slayers had fallen quite a bit afterward.
While Urokodaki was unsure why this was the case, it was highly hypothesized that many of the higher-ranking and strongest demons began to target the strongest demon slayers. Of course, many of the demon slayers would end up dying, and there was an emphasis on demons to kill many of the stronger demon slayers.
In the end, while the numbers of demon slayers increased over time, the demon slayer corps' numbers were more emphasized over quantity over quality.
Many demon slayers now got killed by many demons. The Hashira whilst still the strongest, was nowhere near the skill of the Hashira of the Sengoku Era.
And so, Urokodaki was interested to see what training someone with a long-lost breathing style would look like.
"I've had a nagging feeling… Why would I use a dancing ritual to help me slay demons?" Tanjirou asked.
"I've already explained. I can understand why this is confusing for you. Something you've done for so long was something you learned was something completely different." Urokodaki answered.
"So… I should use the Hinokami Kagura, as a sword style…?" Tanjirou confirmed, to which Urokodaki nodded.
"This form may be more meant for your body over water breathing," Urokodaki explained. "And if I can at least teach you something that will make you a probable and respectable demon slayer, then I shall do so," Urokodaki confirmed to Tanjirou. He placed a hand on Tanjirou's shoulder, who flinched at the sudden touch.
"Even if I already knew a breathing style… Wouldn't it be so difficult to learn another?" Tanjirou asked.
"Obviously, but I believe that you are capable of this. Tanjirou." Urokodaki watched as Tanjirou's eyes looked up to face Urokodaki's mask.
"Using the Hinokami Kagura is probably a better alternative for you, Tanjirou," Urokodaki explained. "I think you will be more capable of it. You already know how to dance with it, I think you can easily turn it into a breathing style. Just like how you turned your breathing technique and altered it." Urokodaki encouraged Tanjirou.
And so, Tanjirou nodded. "I'll eventually use it… But maybe with Nezuko, I'll use water breathing…"
"And why is that?" Urokodaki asked.
"I want to become the best swordsman, with my sibling. I don't see myself as superior or inferior to Nezuko... Even if she is better at water breathing than me, it was because she had an affinity for it." Tanjirou explained.
"Besides… I worry for Nezuko…" Tanjirou added. "I don't want to make Nezuko feel like she's weak compared to me… If she sees me using another breathing style, she might think I've had more time to catch up to her and advanced at a higher rate…" Tanjirou sighed.
"But if you and your sister have differing affinities, then it's natural you both will have differences," Urokodaki explained further.
"Perhaps… But even then… I'm brand new to demon-slaying… If I use the Hinokami Kagura, I have to be strong… I, unfortunately, am still weak… It can only be strong if the person performing it is just as capable as the technique itself…" Tanjirou sighed.
Without any warning, Urokodaki patted Tanjirou on the head, with Tanjirou smelling the pleased sense of Urokodaki.
"You are too humble for your good… Maybe too humble to the point of self-deprecation…" Urokodaki mumbled with a sigh, "They do say the blade is only capable if the wielder is strong-willed and skilled… I guess I can understand your reasoning…"
"Just remember Tanjirou." Urokodaki warned him, "Never get jealous of Nezuko, and vice versa. Especially, if you two are demons, never diverge paths from each other. For the both of you, always keep yourself humble, but don't look down on yourself."
Tanjirou smiled sadly, the same smile Urokodaki always saw from him.
And Urokodaki knew very well what Tanjirou was, in the person he portrayed himself, and the person he saw himself as.
Tanjirou never smiled.
At least, never truly. The most was a small smile, full of sadness.
He had just gone through so much to smile.
He and his sisters were demons. He was tortured by a strange man, who seemed to have turned him into a demon.
He was abused by his parents, for being useless. His siblings mostly stayed away from him out of fear. He suffered ostracization at the hands of his family.
And yet, they always wanted him to burn coal for profits.
He was always kicked out of the house, to go down for more profit through the Hinokami Kagura.
Tanjirou only had the Hinokami Kagura, and Nezuko to help him.
The two things that believed in him.
In Tanjirou's eyes, what was there to be happy about?
He was always told and portrayed to be a failure, and that was what he was always going to be…
In the end, people would do what he did, but better. He wasn't special.
He was just a kid.
A kid who was placed in a dark world from the start.
A kid who never experienced the love every kid should feel from their parents.
A kid who always lived by fear.
A kid who endured much more than even some adults.
A kid who was pushed beyond his limits… And even then… He had a strong will to remain true to his beliefs.
Urokodaki could see it in Tanjirou.
The smile Tanjirou had always showed sadness. He only smiled to make others not worry for him.
And the reason was that he felt undeserving of the care others wanted to give to him, even if he cared for them and took care of them.
He never felt that he deserved kindness from others. He cared for and valued his sister more than himself.
But even then, and through it all, he still held his morals. He still wanted to help others. He still had his morals of justice.
Urokodaki saw the confidence he sometimes portrayed, especially when he needed to protect his sister. It was the only purpose he felt he had.
The value wasn't within him, but due to his closeness and sibling relationship with Nezuko.
And when Tanjirou was angry, he was angry.
While Urokodaki could not understand why Tanjirou sometimes acted out, or out of spite, he certainly knew that wasn't the specific character of Tanjirou.
Something was brewing in Tanjirou's mind, with how troubled it was.
In the end, Urokodaki saw the perks of Giyu Tomioka within Tanjirou, and yet the two were also very different.
Both went through a lot, and it's gotten and impacted them immensely.
From what he could tell from Nezuko, she was able to smile a lot and go around. She was one of the few individuals who could make Tanjirou smile more.
Once again, it was that sad smile. The very smile he made whenever he lied.
Urokodaki could tell that whenever Tanjirou was lying, he'd use a sad smile to get them to believe him.
It was tragic, that was the way Urokodaki found out, and why Tanjirou does what he does.
He had tried to speak with some doctors to see if perhaps the demonic transformation impacted his personality, but it seemed that Tanjirou was mostly human-minded.
Almost always. Even when he was low on energy, he ran to the kitchen and stuffed food into his mouth.
All this time, Nezuko was sleeping.
Tanjirou felt less confident. He felt more like a failure.
Because that was all he was taught to do.
Treat himself like a failure, and he needed to try harder and practice more so that he wouldn't fail yet again.
But it was unhealthy.
In the end, Tanjirou agreed to learn the Hinokami Kagura, but through it, Urokodaki could tell, that even when everything was in favor of Tanjirou, he still felt a fear of failure.
All in all, Urokodaki now knew, he had to be careful when training Tanjirou now.
Now, he was able to properly learn breathing styles. And if he trained Nezuko for the first three months of their time here, now Tanjirou was going to be trained properly.
"Can you tell me how well you find the food you eat?" Urokodaki asked suddenly. Perhaps he could distract Tanjirou by reminding him of his more remarkable signs of progress.
Tanjirou's eyes flickered back, clearly paying attention, "Mostly fine. I can eat it, but I still feel a bit nauseous. I can't go out and train immediately after eating."
"That's the case for humans too, Tanjirou. Though only for being incredibly full." Urokodaki explained.
"Well, I have to wait like 30 minutes or an hour before I can go back and stand up." Tanjirou sighed.
Even when Tanjirou was making progress, he still found a wake to make himself seem weak and incompetent.
Urokodaki sighed. He wanted to congratulate and praise Tanjirou so much.
But he wasn't in peace… Tanjirou was always in a state of intense emotions and stress. Even being able to achieve total concentration while breathing constantly, was interfered with somewhat by his strong emotions.
But still, he had some benefits. When Tanjirou got up multiple times from the strain, he still kept going. He tried for months, all until Nezuko fell asleep.
And it was here did Urokodaki realize how much Tanjirou depended on and clutched onto some stuff.
For example, in his book about Hinokami Kagura, he was afraid of losing.
Regardless, Urokodaki couldn't allow Tanjirou to fall whatever place he was going down.
He had to be there for Tanjirou, whilst Nezuko slept.
Even if his sister was sleeping, Tanjirou would do everything in his power to care for her. Urokodaki could see that Tanjirou saw Nezuko as more worthy than him.
And that worried Urokodaki, for he feared Tanjirou may see himself as the inferior individual.
That was never what a demon slayer wanted to be, or else they run down the wrong path.
The reason?
The book Urokodaki saw, talked about a demon slayer, who out of jealousy and a lust for strength, defected, and openly became a demon.
That demon killed the master of the demon slayer corps at the time, which forced the demon slayer corps to go into hiding.
All in all, Urokodaki saw some parallels between the two.
If Tanjirou or Nezuko gained a lust for power or jealousy, then it could spell disaster for the demon slayer corps.
That meant Urokodaki had to make sure neither sibling felt inferior or superior to one another.
When Urokodaki joined to train Tanjirou, he pondered everything.
Tanjirou was still contemplating, but before he knew it, he got up.
"Sorry for wasting our time… This entire time while I was being uncertain, we could have been training. I'll train extra hard to make up for the lost time." Tanjirou explained.
This further confused Urokodaki. The boy had finally agreed to train once again, and he already saw something he failed for.
Urokodaki sighed. As he watched Tanjirou train to perform the Hinokami Kagura, the main problem was that he couldn't necessarily train him.
Urokodaki didn't know the Hinokami Kagura. Only Tanjirou did.
He had to only watch to make sure Tanjirou didn't do anything reckless.
He had to make sure Tanjirou didn't hurt himself or do anything that would put him in danger. Specifically, in accidentally being out in the sun.
"Um, Urokodaki?" Tanjirou asked.
"Yes?"
"I forgot to mention. There are more volumes of the book for Hinokami Kagura." Tanjirou revealed.
"I see." Urokodaki nodded, "Do you know where they are?"
Tanjirou sighed, "No, they were destroyed in the demon attack…"
"I see… Do you know where to get them?" Urokodaki asked.
"No." Tanjirou looked down…
Urokodaki looked onwards. "It's alright, Tanjirou. For the time being, focus on the forms of the Hinokami Kagura."
"Alright." Tanjirou nodded.
And this was what happened between the two for the past week.
Ironically, Tanjirou decided to focus on one form per day. One day, he would perform the first form of the dance, and the next, the second form, and so on.
This was his plan, and Urokodaki was impressed that Tanjirou was willing to go through such a training regimen.
And so, as Tanjirou progressed, by the end of the first week, he was in the seventh form.
It was quite remarkable progress for a kid, even if he was a demon.
But Urokodaki could see that Tanjirou was enjoying this.
It wasn't because Tanjirou was progressing very well.
Rather, it was the safety and empowerment Tanjirou felt from the dance itself.
As Tanjirou performed the forms, he for once felt valued and useful.
He probably was in shock at how right the forms felt as he performed them. He was seeing himself in a different light, at least that was what Urokodaki hoped.
Tanjirou manipulated his breathing technique, from dancing to a breathing style, meant to slay demons. Tanjirou could easily manipulate the dance, take aspects of them, and use them to dance.
He would be able to improve and progress. While he did feel guilty that Nezuko was not being able to see Tanjirou finally succeed and progress at such a rapid rate, he at least knew that she would be happy once she saw Tanjirou's current standing.
If what Tanjirou said was true regarding Nezuko's beliefs, and contribution to him, then she would be happy.
Urokodaki saw the two demons as his children. It was something he would never once think of himself.
In short, for the first time in Urokodaki's life, he had seen Tanjirou feel confident, and at ease for a training regimen.
This time, he was the one progressing. The dance Tanjirou did already gave him a predisposition toward the breathing style.
Therefore, he was already capable. And this was something Urokodaki saw within Tanjirou. When learning the breathing techniques and constant breathing, Tanjirou was very well at that. He learned it very quickly.
And throughout it all, Tanjirou continued to ask himself.
"Am I worth it?"
A.N / So I got a review on fanfiction telling me the first three chapters are pretty much the same. I can see where you are getting at with that, however, I feel that including those chapters are significant in setting up the story. The first two chapters are meant to give everyone a look at the AU life story of both Tanjirou and his parents. How Tanjirou saw the world growing up, versus Tanjurou.
Of course, I don't expect everyone to like my story, and that is fine. I have no qualms with people who don't like my story. With that being said, I included the first three chapters, because even if they go through similar events, what makes them different is the characters' POV, and how they show a different theme. Tanjirou's POV gives a sense of stress and fear, whereas Tanjurou's POV turns it into tragedy.
But anyways, Tanjirou is already learning the Hinokami Kagura. Of course, considering all the hints, I did plan on making him learn it earlier than canon. However, I'm currently unsure of when to make him use it. I've explained the reasons why Tanjirou might decide to continue with water breathing, but for now, I want to keep it relatively calm. I don't want to make Tanjirou too overpowered, but more competent and understanding of the situations around him, so keep that in mind.
Tanjurou and Tanjirou may be OOC, but for the context of the story and their struggles, I feel it makes sense with their overall character.
No new characters were introduced or altered significantly.
Abilities:
Tanjirou Kamado:
Food Consumption: Tanjirou continues to progress in eating food, which gives him more energy, more than sleeping, and less than when consuming demon flesh. From most energy to least, it goes demon flesh, human food, and sleeping. Another downside to food consumption for Tanjirou is that it does not contribute to him learning a blood demon art, at least not just yet. Sleeping remains a somewhat inefficient, last desperate resort to gaining energy if everything else is depleted. In addition, Tanjirou needs to wait a bit to be able to move without the feeling of nausea.
Hinokami Kagura: Once a dance, Tanjirou and Urokodaki have now altered it to become a breathing style for Tanjirou to use. This is the affinity for Tanjirou Kamado and thus is something he'll specifically learn. He has completed the first six forms so far, and within the next week, is expected to learn the final six.
