Chapter 1
September 2024
Elizabeth hangs up her phone, ending the conversation with, "I love you too, Cam. I'll tell Jason how you are doing." When Jason helped Cam look at places to live in Boston, Cam told Jason he didn't want any bodyguards while he was in school. He said he agreed to them when Jason married his mother, but they have been safe the past year. Cam also said he didn't have Jason's last name, no one knew the connection, and having a bodyguard on campus would draw more attention anyway. Jason gave in but said he could get someone out in a couple of hours if he changed his mind. Elizabeth asked Jason to remove the guards from the house, but she agreed to have them around while running errands. She said they had alarms, security cameras, and panic buttons.
Elizabeth puts the phone down. The boys aren't expected home for several hours. Elizabeth returns to the pictures before her. She has them saved on an SD Card on her computer and can attach the laptop to the TV for a slide show, but she likes having a hard copy of photos. Elizabeth smiles as she flips through the pictures of her and Jason's trip to Jamaica for their first anniversary. Her tan is fading, but the images captured her long curly hair showing highlights from the sun. She takes one of the photos of her in a bikini and a shirtless Jason, his arm around her, and affixes it to the refrigerator with a magnet. Elizabeth grabs a beer and returns to the kitchen table. She gasps and draws her breath in.
Calmly she says, "Johnny Zaccaraha, what are you doing here? I heard you escaped Pentonville."
Johnny sits at the kitchen table and smirks. "Nice pics."
Elizabeth says, "Can I get you something to eat or drink?"
Johnny replies, "A sandwich and a beer would be nice. Thank you. Food hasn't been the best with the asteroid. Don't do anything stupid like calling your husband. At least not yet. I must say I'm surprised the two of you tied the knot."
Elizabeth makes Johnny a sandwich while he watches and grabs himself a beer. Elizabeth doesn't see a gun, but it doesn't mean he doesn't have one. She can't get to hers as it is upstairs in the gun safe by the bed.
Elizabeth says, "LuLu was worried about you when Jason told her you escaped. She asked Jason for your help in getting the charges dropped. She told him what you did for her."
Johnny takes out a gun and sets it on the table. He says, "I heard she remarried the cop-Sonny's son."
Elizabeth says, "Dante. She remarried Dante. I could call Jason and ask him to come home."
Johnny replies, "Not yet. Morgan won't take kindly to me holding his wife hostage."
Elizabeth retains her composure, "Jason told LuLu he could speak with Diane about you covering for LuLu and possibly get charges reduced to time served for the prison break. Jason doesn't want a war. He always believed it wasn't your fault you were raised by Anthony and had Trevor rule over him."
Johnny asks, "How did Morgan do it?"
Elizabeth quizzically replies, "Do what?"
Johnny says, "Leave, step down, walk away."
Elizabeth replies, "Jason hasn't left. He's still in control; he's made different choices. A choice that could allow you to live, to make different choices."
Johnny says, "Okay, I want to cut a deal. My beef isn't with you. But you are leverage. Call Jason, but don't let on that I am here. Ask him to bring dinner. That sandwich wasn't enough. I'll wait. We can catch up on current events; huh, how was that asteroid?" He snickers.
Elizabeth sighs; she calls Jason. "Hi, sweetheart. I was hoping you could pick up dinner for tonight. I got caught up in our vacation pictures and lost track of time. Jake and Aiden are due home soon."
Sonny is in Jason's office as Jason says, "I'll pick something up and be home shortly. I love you." He hangs up, grabs his gun, and says, "Elizabeth is in trouble. I gotta go."
Sonny says, "How do you know? She didn't sound upset."
Jason replies, "Three clues. She called me sweetheart. She never calls me that. Those words are for the boys. We discussed this morning that I would pick up dinner, and third, Jake and Aiden have after-school projects and then plan on going to the Quartermaines. They aren't expected home until after 7:00 pm."
Sonny says, "I'm coming with you."
Jason replies, "No, Elizabeth didn't give the distress word for that. Whatever it is, she believes I can diffuse it myself. You being there could make things worse. Let me check the footage first. Elizabeth is usually good about the alarms." Jason pulls out his phone and clicks on the icon for "Home Security." He scans through each camera location. He says, "No, nope, no, oh my God!"
He runs to his motorcycle, "Sonny yells, who?"
Jason looks behind as he jumps on his bike. "Zaccarah. If you must come, park farther away, and no cops."
Sonny says, "Okay, but I'll be down the street. Call me if you need me."
Jason roars away.
Elizabeth replies, "You should know. That asteroid helped you escape prison."
Johnny says, "True. But after recovering my stash of money and a gun, life hasn't been what I expected. Food was restricted due to the influx of the National Guard. I had to find what I could shelter-wise. I was mainly invisible due to the focus on every other thing. But as always, food has run out, and I'm not inclined to be a part of a hold-up. It would draw too much attention. Hence, it's time for me to resurface; yours was the best option."
Elizabeth replies, "Lucky me." She wishes she had Jason's reflexes or was confident she could get the gun and pull the trigger, but shooting someone is always the last resort for her. She decides to play along with his snark. She is also stalling for time. Johnny enjoys challenges and people who challenge him. Robin told her that despite what happened with Lisa Niles, Johnny was friendly toward her. Initially, he blamed Patrick over Lisa, but his only blame towards Robin was her trust in Patrick. He liked playing games.
Elizabeth says, "LuLu believed in you; you and Maxie had a thing, and it would be harder to connect with Olivia by getting on the Quartermaine grounds. Was I easy prey? How did you get in here?"
Johnny replies, "A couple of well-placed blindspots, patience in breaking your access codes, and picking the perfect time when no one would be home. Why are you here and not at General Hospital today?"
Elizabeth sarcastically replies, "Nurses do get the occasional day off."
Johnny picks up the gun, touches the barrel to his forehead, and then aims it towards Elizabeth. He says, "Touche."
Elizabeth wants to diffuse the situation before Jason arrives. She says, "Johnny, please give me the gun. Jason will be here soon, and you've made your point. Jason will try to help get you representation, but not if you have a gun on me. The first thing he will do is shoot first and ask questions later. As a sign of good faith, please give me the gun." Johnny reluctantly slides the gun in Elizabeth's direction.
Elizabeth picks it up, checks the gun clip, releases the bullet in its chamber, disengages it, and gets up to lock them in a drawer. Elizabeth says, "Thank you, Johnny."
Johnny says, "Daymm, girl. Jason taught you well."
Jason stops his bike a block away from the house. He takes the familiar back alleys on foot. His gun is in his waistband, hidden by his shirt and jacket. Jason manually unlocks the front door so he can make a surprise entrance. He silently thanks Spinelli for showing him how to operate that crap. He looks at his phone, and it appears that Johnny and Elizabeth are talking. Jason walks to the front door, his gun drawn.
