Title: I Woke Up from a Coma, but Something's Weird?
It was as if he woke up from a long, long dream. Well, it wouldn't be too incorrect.
He had an accident a few months prior, where he fell down the stairs and was in a coma for 10 weeks. When he woke up and saw his sister crying for him desperately he was lost for words. It seems that he was diagnosed to be almost brain dead and it was almost a miracle that he even woke up.
It took him a few days to regain his speech from talking gibberish, and a few more weeks to regain his physical and mental faculties to be discharged from the hospital. He was practically jobless after being dismissed due to his long leave from work.
It was a good thing his father was able to have him work for an acquaintance abroad. He'd be working at a workshop/junk shop abroad as a mechanic in England. Free lodgings too. Sweet.
He'd panicked then and tried to learn English before his departure, but surprisingly, he was able to speak fluently in just a week. The look of his sister when she quizzed him will forever be stored in his phone for blackmail.
Now, after a few weeks of working for Tanaka-san's shop in Sheffield, he had adapted to the somewhat dreary England weather. Things weren't that busy, and he made a few acquaintances like that old grandma across the street that makes a killer casserole like no one's business.
His hobby nowadays was tinkering and fixing stuff from the shop's storage and even make a few bucks selling restored appliances. Which is why he found himself outside exploring downtown Sheffield after being kicked out by Tanaka-san.
"Rio, you're a great guy. Even helped the shop earn a bit more than expected after you started working here. But a guy's got to have more hobbies than just his work."
While being told to come back tomorrow and being handed a pretty sizeable amount of cash, he was just aimlessly walking through the suburbs, when he caught an object that almost hit him. He held it tight and found it to be a soccer ball.
"Sorry for that!"
He looked around and found a peppy looking girl running towards him, looking apologetic. Behind her, were a group of college guys and girls, with one in particular looking panicky?
"It's fine." No harm, no foul. He threw it lightly, before kicking it towards the girl. She looked surprised, but received it without any problems. He was about to walk away when he felt someone tug on his sleeve.
"Hey, mister, wanna play with us?" Her eyes sparkled, as she asked excitedly, clutching the ball in her arms.
Play soccer?
"I don't know how to play though?" Really, the only thing he knew was the bare basics. Kick ball, shoot other side.
"It's fine! We're missing one player anyways. Its fine right, guys!?" She shouted to her friends and they shrugged, seeming to not care. "See? They're totally up for it!" Man, this girl's just pure distilled energy.
"Eh..." He was pretty reluctant being a total noob, and he didn't want to humiliate himself, especially in front of a cute girl. But... well, Tanaka-san did say he'd need another hobby. There's worse things to kill time with. "Sure, why not."
"Awesome. You're on the opposite team." Her smirk definitely isn't selling this soccer thing to him now...
A few hours later, and he had to comfort the peppy girl from crying too much in a bench, while drenched in sweat.
"Mister, you liar! You're definitely a professional player!" And what a surprise it was.
2-1, in favor of his team. After an intense game, he was able to score one of the goals and assisted for the other one. They had a pretty sizeable crowd watching by the end of the match too. His teammates were definitely enjoying themselves after winning.
"Miss, really, I'm not. Other than gym class in high school, I definitely didn't touch a soccer ball." If anything, he was part of the go home club. Is this the power of an adult...?
It seemed the wrong thing to say as she just cried harder. Thinking back to the times when his sister cried, he gave her his handkerchief (since when do he bring one...?) and he awkwardly patted her head to relieve her.
"*sniff* ...so embarrassing... " After calming down, she seemed to feel shy. "But this is the first time I've met someone capable of matching me... Hey, mister, I never got your name, didn't I?" She asked while toying with his handkerchief.
"Ah, yea. Name's Rio. Rio Tachibana." He introduced himself. "You?"
"Rio. Mr. Rio, huh?" She seemed to whisper more to herself than anything. "I'm Noelle. Noelle Berlitz, sophomore in Sheffield Uni, aspiring professional soccer player!" She made a V-sign with a smile that made it look like she didn't cry her heart out at all. She stood up and stretched which did emphasized wonderful things that will not be mentioned.
"Welp, it's get late mister, so I'd better get going. And um, about your hanky..." She hesitated, noticing that she's still holding a damp handkerchief in her hand.
He waved his hand dismissively. "Eh, it yours. Wash it, throw it, whatever." He still got a few spares with him back home.
"It's mine now then, ehe." She gave a cute grin before pocketing it. She took her bags and was about to run when she stopped for a moment in front of him. "Mister, let's play again next week?" Noelle asked hopefully.
"Eh, sure. If I've got time."
"That's a promise then! See you same place, mister!" She waved her arms while grouping back with her friends. He watched them disappear around the corner, the area becoming quieter after they left.
"Got a new hobby now, I guess?" Definitely not what he was expecting after being kicked out today. "Time to go back home."
Walking the streets back, he can't help but feel everything got a bit colorful.
A/N: Hello, world. I love the MobuSeka series to bits, and decided to try my hand with a short story so that this brainworm can get out to you peeps. Now for the bullet points to explain some stuff:
1. This is a spin-off where the original Leon in Japan (Rio, in this case) where he did not die after falling down the stairs. Always saw different takes and timelines for MobuSeka fics, but it's always in the otome game. So this time I want it in modern world.
2. After her brother survived, his sister (Marie) got her wake-up call, but without the consequence of the canon event.
3. I planned to have Leon/Rio meet with the other heroines in the modern world.
3a. So the inspiration for this story is the illustration of Shiosato Jun, the official author of MobuSeka. It's where Olivia and Angelica cling to Leon while wearing modern clothes. I want a story of that written like a decade ago.
4. My general plans for this (if I decide to continue) is that this would be Leon a few years after the official 'end' of the WN. He 'woke' up from his dream and retain some stuff then.
4a. After being around Luxion for long enough, Leon got interested about machines and learned how to fix stuff from Lux. My plan is to have Leon 'create' new groundbreaking appliances/devices from an era where they managed to create starships, AIs and other sci-fi stuff. He'll create an electronics company with him as core researcher.
4b. Leon still retains his muscle memory during his time, so he's definitely more athletic.
5. Noelle got to meet Leon first. Because I like her a lot. Enough said.
5a. Well, not really. It's more like I liked how her story progressed, how she was a damsel then was ready to sacrifice everything to prove her love was real. I'd like to think Noelle's got the better chemistry with Leon more.
5b. Wouldn't be MobuSeka without trying to make this a harem ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
6. My plans for the other heroines: Olivia (aspiring teacher), Angelica and Louise (daughter of a business mogul), Clarice and Deidre (eventual manager and security detail for Leon's company), Hertrude (secretary from a rival electronics company, but gets poached later on) and Noelle (design artist to Leon's horrendous inventions)
