Hi all! So… I WILL finish my Newtina-TLOU fic, I promise, but… Titanic was back in the cinema in 3D in February because it was just after the 25th Anniversary of its release (fun fact: Titanic came out like three or four weeks before I was born!) and Titanic is literally one of my special interests as an autistic person, both the 1997 film and the history of the 1912 sinking. I have studied so much about it in my spare time that it's unreal, and I even went to a Titanic exhibition last April (one day after the 110th anniversary of the sinking in fact) in London, so… yeah.
111 years ago, in the early hours of 15th April 1912, the RMS Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in the early hours of 14th April.
I really wanted to write a fic as a love letter to the film and to the history of the sinking. I've talked about a Newtina Titanic AU on Instagram as well as a Theseus/Lally AU and who knows? Maybe I'll write the TheseLally one at some point, (because that one when I discussed it on Instagram featured Theseus as Rose) but as I was watching the film a third time in the cinema (back in February), I started to pull together a Newtina one.
This fic is based on the 1997 film directed by James Cameron; because I want to respect the real life people who were shown in the film, I have kept most of the real life people in their respective roles instead of substituting them for FB characters. I have not only used the official cut of the film that was released, but I have also used the script and deleted scenes (some of which I believe should have been in the film even though it would have been even longer), and I've made some amendments to be as historically accurate as possible.
Just to clarify about amendments: I love the film. James Cameron did an astoundingly good job at portraying the Titanic, the lead up to the sinking and the sinking itself accurately. However, there are small things here and there that won't be the same as the film (aside from the obvious Newtina stuff)
Last year before I went to the Titanic Exhibition in London, I rewatched the film and made a post on the character development of the protagonists, the accuracy of the film and other things. Please feel free to read it because it really highlights how beautifully James Cameron captured the Titanic's history, the people on the ship and so much else. I will also be recommending Titanic books on my blog AND here, starting with the next chapter (since the note here is getting VERY long)
The title of this fic is taken from the name of a track on the Titanic soundtrack; it's the song that plays when Rose jumps out of the lifeboat back onto the ship so she can stay with Jack. I highly recommend listening to James Horner's incredible soundtrack, especially the extended one that features the Party in Third Class track, the songs the band play during the film, and the version of Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On that featured dialogue.
Disclaimer just to say that I do NOT support JKR in the slightest. Please stand with trans people and not with her. I also do not own any WW characters, and I do not own any rights to Titanic, be it the film or the history behind it. I DID make up the character of Ellie though, and there's some reasoning for adding her but I don't want to go into too much detail yet in case it spoils the fic (feel free to hit me up on tumblr if you want to chat and ask though!
Without further ado… let us go back to Titanic…
1996
"Hey, Els!"
Ellie Scamander was jolted from her book by the voice; when she raised her eyes, she saw her uncle Rolf standing over her, eyebrow raised and a bemused expression on his face. "Huh?"
"You going to help me set the table or are you going to sit there and read?" He asked good-naturedly.
"Do you actually want an answer to that or…?"
He chuckled, nudging her armchair and shaking his head. "Come on, set the table and then you can go back to doing whatever you want until the food's done."
She let out a sigh but closed her book and stood, knowing it was better to get it over and done with. As she followed her uncle towards the kitchenette area, she cast a quick glance out the open door towards the balcony; her great-nana seemed content enough, one of her three cats on her lap as she leafed through one of her books, and the shawl wrapped around her shoulders was enough to keep her warm for now. Satisfied, she quickly retrieved the utensils from the correct drawer and set the table for three before taking a quick look at the clock to check the time.
"Hey, can I turn the TV on?" She called.
Rolf barely glanced up from the food he was stirring on the stove. "Sure, but not too loud - don't disturb Nana."
"I won't." Ellie grinned as she walked over to the small television, precariously perched opposite the table on a shelf, and switched it on. She hummed as she switched through the channels before stopping on CNN News; it had been by far the most up to date on a recent search of the Titanic shipwreck, getting live satellite footage and interviews with the team diving to the bottom of the ocean, and she'd been watching the reports each day eagerly. It was usually around this time that there was an update from the crew, and she was desperate to not miss it.
Rita Skeeter, the blonde newsreader whose smile made Ellie's skin crawl for some reason, was smiling with her teeth as she spoke. "...best known for finding Spanish gold in sunken galleons in the Carribean, treasure hunter Luna Lovegood is now using deep submergence technology to work two and a half miles down at another famous wreck… the Titanic."
"Fuck yeah," She muttered to herself, heading back to her seat so she could sit and watch comfortably. One of her great-nana's cats jumped up onto the armrest, purring, and she gave him an affectionate scratch behind the ear. "Hang on, Hoppy, I'll feed you in a minute."
"She is with us live via satellite from a Russian research ship in the middle of the Atlantic…" The picture on the screen switched from the news announcer to footage of a pretty woman with pale blonde hair. "Hello, Luna?"
"Yes, hi, Rita," Luna put on a smile that was somewhat dreamy; she had rings around her eyes, Ellie noticed, as if she hadn't slept very well. "You know, Titanic is not just a shipwreck… it is the shipwreck. I've planned this expedition for three years, and we're out here recovering some amazing things… things that will have enormous historical and educational value."
"But it's no secret that education is not your main purpose, Ms Lovegood," Rita stated, somewhat smugly. "Your expedition is at the center of a storm of controversy over salvage rights and even ethics. Many are calling you a grave robber. "
Luna frowned at this, clearly not pleased by this description of her work. "That is not my team's intention at all. Nobody called the recovery of artefacts from the pyramids grave robbing, for example, or the salvaging of fossils stealing."
Another figure entered the frame; this was another woman, with bushy brown hair, and she was clearly displeased by what the news reporter had said. "Exactly. We have museum-trained experts here, making sure everything is preserved and catalogued properly - like it deserves to be. We're not seeking treasure at all." She straightened up, gesturing towards someone off the camera. "Ginny?"
A third woman appeared now, her red hair in a loose ponytail as she gestured for the camera to follow her. "Yes, thank you, ladies. Now, everyone knows the familiar stories of Titanic - you know, the nobility of the band playing to the very end and all that. But what we're interested in are the untold stories, the secrets locked deep inside the hull of Titanic, and we're out here using robot technology to go further into the wreck than anybody else has before…"
"Turn that up, dear."
Ellie was so engrossed in the report that she nearly jumped; to her surprise, her great-nana had made her way inside and was leaning on her walking stick. "Oh… Oh, Nana," She said hurriedly, standing up. "Look, come sit down here…"
Rolf was coming from the kitchenette now, food forgotten as he went to help her. "Nana, what is it?"
She waved both of them off with a gnarled hand, brown eyes fixed on the television. "Turn it up, please."
Her grandson quickly did as asked before all three of them focused on the news report; the red-haired woman was speaking still. "...Now, look at this drawing, which we found just today… a piece of paper that's been underwater for eighty-four years."
The camera panned off of the woman to a tray of water where a piece of paper was submerged; Ellie's mouth fell open as she realised the drawing featured a completely nude woman wearing nothing but a necklace. "Woah."
"I don't think you should be seeing this," Rolf muttered to his niece, but he made no move to turn the report off.
She scoffed. "I'm fourteen, not four - I know what boobs look like."
"Your own don't count," He joked, grinning as she flipped him off.
"See that? My team are able to preserve it intact." Ginny stated calmly, the hint of a satisfied smile on her face. "Should this have remained unseen at the bottom of the ocean for eternity when we can see it and enjoy it now?"
The old woman exhaled heavily, like a weight was on her shoulders. "... Mercy Lewis."
Ginny let out a sigh as she looked out at the ocean; around her, the crew of the Keldysh were getting ready to launch their subs once more so that they could search another part of the wreck on the ocean floor. She had really thought they'd found it this time, the necklace that was called the Heart of the Ocean; the drawing was something, at the very least, and as they had told the partners funding the trip, there were still places it could be, but it was still disheartening that they had yet to find it.
It was true, this diamond was worth a lot of money, and yes, they were searching the wreck for that one specific thing, but it wasn't about the finances they'd receive; all of them were genuinely curious as to where the thing had ended up, and something that beautiful, that infamous, surely couldn't be allowed to disappear forever. To add, the only reason that the investors had agreed to this trip was the condition that the team would find the necklace - this alone would be more than enough to cover the cost of the trip if found, and it meant any future expeditions or research projects would be more likely to receive funding.
"Ready when you are, Miss Weasley!" She heard one of the crewmen shout, gesturing to the sub waiting for her. "Miss Granger is already inside, and Miss Lovegood won't be long."
Ginny sighed, shaking her head to herself; they'd find it, she reasoned, they would - sooner or later, it had to be found.
Just as she was about to climb into the sub, however, two figures came running up to her; one was her brother Ron, looking somewhat wary, and the other was Luna, who appeared only slightly out of breath as they reached her, relief evident on her face. "Thank goodness we caught you… there's a satellite call for us."
"Luna, we're literally launching right now," Ginny huffed, rolling her eyes. "See the submersibles here, going into the water? Get someone to take the call and write down the message, and we'll deal with it when we get back."
To her surprise, Luna was shaking her head as Ron cleared his throat. "No… Ginny, listen, you have to trust us when we say we want to take this call."
Five minutes later, Ginny and Hermione were following Ron and Luna up the deck towards where Harry was waiting near the phone line; Hermione was irritated, clearly displeased about the delay in their dive. "Really, couldn't this have waited a few hours… this had better be good, Luna."
The blonde woman grimaced slightly as Harry handed the phone to Ginny. "You'll need to speak up because she's kind of old."
She groaned. "Great. Just great." She waited for Harry to push down on the line before putting on her politest tone. "This is Ginny Weasley. How can I help you, Mrs…?"
"Scamander," Luna supplied helpfully. "Tina Scamander."
For a moment there was no response - and then the voice came, clear despite the obvious age of the speaker. "I was just wondering if you had found the Heart of the Ocean yet, Miss Weasley."
Ginny nearly dropped the phone, her mouth falling open; Hermione looked confused, but Luna just nodded her head. "Told you we wanted to take the call," She said serenely.
"Alright," She said, trying to remain calmer than she felt. "You have my attention, Tina. Can you tell us who the woman in the picture is?"
Across the Atlantic, in a small studio flat as her grandson and great-granddaughter watched in curious silence, Tina Scamander smiled to herself. "Oh, yes. The woman in the picture is me."
As they watched the helicopter thunder across the ocean towards them, Hermione frowned and leaned against the railing of the boat.
"Has it crossed your mind that she might be lying?" She questioned her friends. "It wouldn't be the first time someone has lied for money or publicity - like the Anastasia Romanov case."
"They're inbound," Luna stated, completely ignoring the question. "Not long until they arrive… should we go and meet them?"
"It's probably the polite thing to do," Ginny agreed, though as they started to make their way towards the ship's helipad she directed her attention to the other woman. "What makes you think she's lying?"
"She says she's Porpentina Goldstein," Hermione began thoughtfully. "Porpentina Goldstein died on the Titanic when she was seventeen years old - that's what all of the records say, correct?"
"You've read the records more than we have."
She nodded to herself. "Exactly. If she had lived… well, she'd be over a hundred by now."
"A hundred and one next month," Luna agreed seriously. "People have been known to live for longer actually."
"I know, I'm just…" Hermione huffed, clearly irritated by the fact they weren't taking her words seriously. "I traced Mrs Scamander as far back as the twenties, by which time she was married to her husband and had a child with another on the way. Now her husband is dead, both of her children are, and so is one of her grandchildren; she's living with her remaining grandson and her great-granddaughter."
"She's clearly led a tragic life," Ginny stated dryly just as the helicopter began to descend. "Look, Hermione, everyone who knows about the diamond is supposed to be dead or on this ship - but she knows about it, and I think we should hear what she has to say."
Harry and Ron were already at the helipad when they arrived, the helicopter touching down seconds later; both of them immediately went to assist the Keldysh crew members with taking luggage down. Ron was returning with his third suitcase when he shot a look to the three women watching. "Doesn't exactly travel light, this woman."
"Old people," Ginny mused with a shrug.
Both men helped the crew lift the wheelchair containing a rather frail one hundred year old down to the floor, and Luna stepped forwards with a kind smile. "Mrs Scamander, welcome to the Keldysh - I'm Luna Lovegood."
Mrs Scamander smiled tightly, clutching onto a small dog that was seated in her lap as she clasped Luna's hand in greeting. Behind her, a handsome man in his forties jumped out from the helicopter and then turned to help a teenage girl jump down; despite the man being swarthier, the resemblance between the two was clear by their reddish-brown hair and bright blue-green eyes. Hermione raised a brow as she leaned closer to Ginny so that she could be heard over the noise of the propellers. "Is she bringing her whole family?"
"It would explain the luggage," The younger woman joked before shaking her head. "No, just her grandson and great-granddaughter - the grandson is her caretaker, and they can't leave the great-granddaughter alone for however-long this will take."
"A submarine expedition is hardly an appropriate place for a teenager," Hermione stated, watching as the young girl bent to check on the old lady. As the woman's grandson started to push the wheelchair across the deck, following Luna as she showed them their rooms, Harry walked over to them and the bushy-haired woman stared at the object he was carrying in shock. "Is that-?"
"A fish bowl," Harry confirmed, vaguely confused.
As he joined them, Ron snorted. "If she wanted to see fish that badly, there's an ocean full of them right here."
Once the helicopter had left and a sufficient amount of time had passed to give the old woman time to settle, the team made their way to the stateroom that had been allocated to the three new passengers. As Luna peeked inside, she noticed the young man unpacking things into a chest of drawers whilst Tina herself arranged a number of framed photos on the bureau next to the fish bowl she had bought; from what she could see, the photos seemed to be of holidays, her late husband, children, grandchildren, even a few school portraits of her great-granddaughter. Wanting to be polite, the blonde woman gently knocked on the door and waited.
"Hmm? Oh, come in."
As she entered, closely followed by Ginny and Hermione, she noticed the teenage girl - Tina's great-granddaughter - sitting on one of the small beds and leafing through a book; the picture on the front captured Luna's attention immediately. "Titanic," She said softly, giving the girl a smile when she looked up. "Your book, I mean."
"Oh." The girl gave an excited smile as she set the book aside. "Yeah. I love the Titanic - I've got all these books at home about it, but Nana and Uncle Rolf said I could only bring a few, and-"
"And I don't think Miss Lovegood wants to hear you spout facts she most likely already knows," The man - Rolf - interrupted good-naturedly, sitting back on his haunches as he smiled easily at the women who had entered. "Good afternoon, ma'am."
"Afternoon," Ginny acknowledged before straightening up, wanting to get to business as soon as possible. "Mrs Scamander, is your stateroom alright?"
The old woman looked up. "Yes. Very nice." She gestured to the man and girl. "This is my grandson, Rolf, and my great-granddaughter, Ellie." Tina smiled contentedly. "Rolf takes care of me."
The teenager gave a cough, somewhat affronted.
"And Ellie too," The woman laughed, and the girl grinned proudly. "I'm supposed to be looking after her, but I'm afraid it's quite the other way around these days."
Rolf stood and held out his hand politely for each of the women to shake. "Yes. We actually met just a few minutes ago, Nana, remember? Up on deck?"
"Hmm. Oh. Yes." Tina shook her head to herself absent-minded; as she quickly finished arranging her photographs, Luna glimpsed Ginny and Hermione sending each other concerned and disbelieving looks at the old lady's behaviour - it wasn't dreadfully encouraging that she could barely remember something that happened several minutes ago, let alone events from eighty-four years in the past. "There, that's nice. I have to have my pictures when I travel… and Billy, of course." She smiled fondly at the fluffy dog in her lap. "I wish I could have brought the cats, but I doubt a ship is the best place for them - Billy is wonderful company, however."
"It's nice to meet a fellow animal lover," Luna mused serenely, unable to stop the kind smile on her face; she already knew she liked this woman just from this fact alone. "And I'm also honoured to meet your grandson and great-granddaughter too; I hope that all three of you will enjoy your time here, however long it may be."
Rolf smiled at her, and she felt something strange fluttering in her stomach. "Thank you, Miss Lovegood."
"Would you like us to get you anything, Mrs Scamander?" Ginny asked politely.
Tina paused for only a brief second before the corners of her mouth turned up. "Why, yes: I should like to see my drawing."
The preservation area of the lab deck was near silent as Tina found herself wheeled inside and up to a tray on a nearby table; she was aware of Rolf behind her, pushing her gently along, and of Ellie beside her, her curiosity piqued by the equipment and people around her - she could tell the girl wanted to explore, wanted to ask many questions about the long sunken ship that had long held her interest, but was holding herself back for now.
She'll know it all soon enough… more than any book could teach her.
As the wheelchair stopped, she looked down into the tray of water - and there it was, the drawing, her drawing, as clear and detailed as the day it had been done. The water swayed and rippled slightly, making the portrait seem alive, and for a moment Tina wanted nothing more than to take it in hand and hold it just once more - to brush her fingers over the charcoal lines that formed how she had once looked - but she knew it had to stay immersed for now, until the crew could figure out the best way to preserve it. Her brown eyes were ancient as they gazed, the memories flooding back to her as if they were happening all over again.
A man's freckled hand, long fingers, holding a conté crayon as he deftly created a shoulder and the length of her hair with two efficient lines… gently shaking a reddish brown fringe from his eyes, bluish green, only just visible over the top of a sketching pad… soft eyes, but fearlessly direct-
"Louis the Sixteenth wore a fabulous stone, called the Blue Diamond of the Crown, which disappeared in 1792, about the time Louis was beheaded," A voice said, and when Tina looked up she saw it was the woman with bushy brown hair, Hermione, speaking; to her left stood two of the men who had helped carry her things to her room, one with dark hair and glasses and the other with red hair like that of Ginny's. The woman held out a reference photo of a large blue necklace as she continued to speak. "The most logical theory is that the crown diamond was cut too, recut into a heart-like shape, and it became Le Coeur de la Mer - the-"
"The Heart of the Ocean," Ellie finished, eyes wide.
Hermione spared her a quick irritated glance before nodding. "The Heart of the Ocean, yes. It's worth quite a lot of money, more than the Hope Diamond in fact."
Tina was unable to help the raspy chuckle that escaped her mouth as she looked at the all-too familiar necklace in the picture. "It was a dreadful heavy thing," She remarked dryly before gesturing to the drawing. "I only wore it this once."
Rolf looked between the photograph and the drawing curiously. "You actually believe this is you, Nana?"
"It is me, dear."
"Damn, Nana," Ellie muttered, clearly impressed. "You were a dish!"
Ginny had to hold back a laugh at this, trying to stay as professional as possible even as Harry let out a chuckle and Ron nearly choked; nearby, she saw Luna cover her mouth with her hand and even Hermione had to bite her lip to contain a bemused smile. "We tracked the necklace down through insurance records," The brunette woman continued. "There was an old claim that was settled under terms of absolute secrecy. Do you know who this claimant was, Tina?"
Tina rolled her eyes to herself. "Someone named Tolliver, I'd imagine."
Hermione was stunned by this, and the rest of the team suddenly stood up straighter. "Peleus Tolliver, yes - a Pittsburgh steel tycoon," She managed. "For a diamond necklace his son Achilles bought in France for his fiancée…"
"You," Ginny realised with a jolt. "You were his fiancée."
"He bought it for you a week before he sailed on Titanic," Luna finished, greatly enthused by this. "And the claim was filed right after the sinking - so the diamond had to have gone down with the ship. Look." She pointed to the corner of the drawing so that the three Scamanders would look closer. "Do you see the date?"
"April 14th, 1912," Rolf read aloud.
"That's the day Titanic hit the iceberg," Ellie stated, clearly excited by this.
Luna nodded before directing her attention to Rolf. "It means that if your grandmother is who she says she is, she was wearing the diamond on the day that Titanic sank."
"And it makes you our new best friend," Ron joked, only for the three girls to glare half-heartedly at him. "What? It's the truth-"
"Mrs Scamander," Hermione interrupted, kneeling down by the wheelchair so that she could be eye-to-eye with the older woman. "We will happily compensate you for anything you can tell us that will lead to recovering the diamond."
Tina paused, looking around at the younger people all around her as her smile faded slowly. "I don't want your money. I know how hard it is for people who care greatly for money to give some away."
Hermione flushed bright red. "That's not… We're not…"
"Mrs Scamander… Tina," Luna tried, her voice gentle and soft. "We don't have a great deal of money - this expedition has taken up all of the resources we had, and if we don't make progress soon then we will be forced to abandon it." She paused before taking one gnarled hand in her own. "We're not interested in the money from the diamond - not beyond it helping to fund our expedition. We genuinely want to know more about the ship, but we need to find the diamond to do it, to keep the partners funding this trip happy. I know we're asking for a lot, but if you help us then we will give you anything you wish for."
For a moment Tina didn't speak, looking at the girl in front of her: something about her face made it clear she was honest, that this was not just a heartless group of treasure hunters, and it was obvious this girl especially had a genuine interest in hearing what she had to say. Her eyes drifted for a moment to her great-granddaughter, who was waiting just as eagerly for an answer, who was just like Luna in her love and passion for what was clearly a topic of special interest.
They're both like him.
"You may give me this," She said quietly, indicating the drawing. "If anything I tell you is of value."
The rest of the team, including Ginny and Hermione, looked uncertain about letting her take what was by far their biggest breakthrough away - but Luna merely smiled and gave a nod. "Of course. It's your drawing, after all." She inclined her head to Harry and Ron, who were waiting by another table. "Over here are a few things we've recovered from your staterooms on the ship… would you like to see them?"
Rolf slowly wheeled her over to the next table, his grandmother so shrunken in her chair that she could barely see over the tabletop; there were fifty or so objects laid out on the worktable, from mundane to extremely valuable, and it was with a trembling hand that she reached out to lift one up. "This was mine," She whispered nostalgically, showing her great-granddaughter eagerly; it was a tortoise shell hand mirror, inlaid with mother of pearl, and she caressed it wonderingly. "How extraordinary! It looks the same as the last time I saw it." Slowly, she turned the mirror over and looked; her ancient face stared back at her from cracked glass, and she sighed. "The reflection has changed a bit."
"And yet just as beautiful as ever, Nana," Her grandson reassured her with a small smile.
Tina carefully put the mirror down, next picking up a silver and moonstone brooch. "This belonged to one of my guardians: she wanted to go back for it… caused quite a fuss." Something else caught her eye, and her breath hitched as she took the next item in hand; it was a beautiful ebony comb with a jade butterfly perched on the handle, ready to take flight. She turned it slowly in her hands, closing her eyes as a rush of images and emotions struck her, many of which had lain dormant for eight decades.
"Tina?"
Her eyes flew open again, comb still clutched in hand at the sound of Ginny Weasley's voice.
"Are you ready to go back to Titanic?"
The imaging shack on the Keldysh was a darkened room lined with television monitors all displaying images of the wreck that were being fed from various sources, including the two submarines and two remotely operated underwater vehicles, one of which the crew had nicknamed 'Snoop Dog' and the other 'Duncan'. Ellie was captivated by the images, having only seen them on a rather small television set before - it was like one of her dreams had come to life, being able to see something that she was fascinated by firsthand like this.
Her eyes drifted over to her great-grandmother, who was staring just as raptly at the screens as she herself was - but there was one in particular that seemed to enthral her. The teenager moved closer, kneeling down beside the wheelchair and taking the old lady's hand, and following her gaze. "Look at that," She whispered in awe. "That's the bow railing, right?"
Tina didn't speak, but she didn't need to - it was clear that it meant something to her, something important.
"This is amazing," Ellie continued, squeezing her hand gently enough to not bruise. "And you were actually on the boat… I just can't believe you never told me, Nana."
Ginny moved closer, her face studying the woman's reactions carefully. "We're live from twelve thousand feet," She informed her. "The bow's stuck in the bottom like an axe from the impact."
"We can run the simulation for you, if you want," Ron announced from behind them. "Harry and I worked it up on this monitor."
Hermione frowned and opened her mouth, but the old lady's voice cut her off completely before she could admonish them. "I don't need to see the animation," Tina said emotionlessly. "The experience of it was… somewhat different to a cartoon."
The men had the decency to lower the heads, rather cowed by this. Luna took this opportunity to approach, her blue eyes meeting aged brown ones. "Will you share it with us?"
Tina's eyes went back to the screens that showed the sad ruins of what laid far below them; a view from one of the submarines tracked slowly over the boat deck, one of the Wellin davits still in place-
Ghostly waltz music. The faint and echoing sound of an officer's voice, English accent, calling for "Women and children only". Screaming faces in a running crowd, pandemonium and terror - people crying, praying, kneeling on deck-
Her eyes drifted to another monitor, this one displaying the view from the 'Snoop Dog' ROV as it moved down a rusted and debris-filled corridor, an endless row of doorways that slid past like dark mouths-
A child, three years old, standing ankle deep in water in the middle of an endless corridor that was flooding fast, lost and alone as he cries-
"Oh." Tears spilled down her cheeks as she put her head down, sobbing quietly at the flood of memories and emotions.
"Nana!" Ellie clutched her hand and looked at the team accusingly. "You've upset her!"
Rolf frowned and immediately took hold of the wheelchair. "I'm taking her to rest."
"No…"
"Come on, Nana-"
"NO!"
Her voice was surprisingly strong, and as she raised her head the sweet little old lady was gone - replaced by a woman with eyes of steel, a woman of strength, a woman of passion and soul.
Her grandson immediately let go of the chair, and the entire room fell quiet as they waited with bated breath for what was to come; her great-granddaughter hesitated before kneeling back down, still clutching her hand. Luna pulled a stool over so that she could sit in front of the wheelchair, barely able to conceal her anticipation. "Tell us, Tina. We're listening."
The woman looked from screen to screen at the images of the rusted ship and took a deep breath. "It's been eighty-four years…"
"Just tell us what you can," Hermione offered, clearly trying to be kind.
She held up her hand for silence. "Do you want to hear it or not, Miss Granger?"
Ron and Harry shared a grin but said nothing; Hermione merely nodded slowly as she settled into a chair, though her cheeks were slightly pink, and Ginny quickly switched on the mini-recorder and set it nearby so that they could document every word that was said.
"It's been eighty-four years," Tina began. "And I can still smell the fresh paint. The china had never been used, the sheets had never been slept in. Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams. And it was. It really was…"
As always, reviews and comments are greatly appreciated, as are questions!
