Screams.
The screams haunted me. I looked down at my hands and they were covered with fresh scarlet blood. There were faceless people laying on the ground covered in blood and in various ways of mutilation.
There was a loud thudding sound that woke me up from my restless sleep. I rubbed my hands over my red eyes. The lackluster sleep I'd gotten wasn't going to make my mood any better. I opened the door to my laboratory. On the other side was a tall man with blonde hair, fair skin, and several tribal tattoos that decorated his body. He was wearing a sleeveless shirt and dark pants. A cigarette hung from his lip, and a pistol was strapped to his hip. It looked to be a Wingman revolver. This was gonna be difficult then.
I cleared my throat, "Can I help you?"
The man on the other side of the door merely nodded, "Is this the residence of Zuri Abara?"
I sighed. Of course this would be happening to me. Every time I have that dream. I beckoned for him to come inside the building. I sat down in my rolling chair and slid it over to the table where there was a bunch of glass bottles filled with numerous liquids, a pair of gauntlets, a pair of greaves, and a chestplate. A bunch of tubes also laid around the table. I grabbed a soldering iron and began working on a circuit board.
WIthout looking to see if he entered, I started to talk, "So no doubt Hades sent you to finally kill me for not bowing to his whims, yeah?"
The man grunted. I took that as a yes.
"So unfortunately that isn't going to happen. I would appreciate it if you just left, and let me work in peace. What I'm doing is far too important to be interrupted by some madman with delusions of grandeur." I still hadn't looked up, but I heard the sound of the safety being clicked off.
Good.
I felt the tip of the Wingman placed on the back of my head. I didn't stutter, I just kept working. This was the most important part, after all.
"You don't really have a choice, man. Either you come with me now or you die."
I snickered, "Rad. Then I guess you'll just have to shoot me. Not in the head, that's important." I turned and grinned at him, showing off my canines which were abnormally long, "Can't have you ruin my best asset."
My face or my brain? I'll let you decide.
He growled slightly and in that moment everything slowed down for me. I saw him pull the trigger, the hammer drop, and the bullet fly straight for my head. Quicker than most people react, I stood up and let the bullet hit me in the chest and send me flying back. I crashed into the vials of liquid, and sent it all over the floor and the table.
Asshole. He went for the head when I told him not to. Now I'm gonna make this dude suffer and bring him back to his boss, maybe I'll massacre Hades while I'm there. I coughed and stood up, and with a flex of my pectoral muscles, the bullet dropped to the floor.
"Okay. That was a little uncalled for, I was trying to be nice." I grabbed the Peacekeeper that I stored under the table. I loaded the rounds into the barrel, and pulled the lever. "Unfortunately for you, I have now lost my patience."
With a gunshot that rang throughout the room and probably throughout the street, the man screamed in anguish as I shot him in the foot. Half of his shin was missing now. As he bled out on my floor, I stared at him impassively.
"Now, what we're gonna do is we're gonna go see your boss and I'm gonna have a long talk with him about manners. Are we on the same page?" I growled.
He nodded through the sobs.
"Good. Let's not waste a moment."
I grabbed the gauntlets, greaves, and chestplate and let them attach themselves to me with a hiss. Each needle punctured my skin and the blood now flowed through the tubes. I needed to make this quick, so no way I was bringing this schmuck with me. I grabbed his Wingman off the ground and put one in his head.
I grimaced. I didn't like killing. I just had a predisposition for it that made me excel. My parents sold me to a pretty big group of shady people who messed around with genetics. They screwed with my body through experiments and my brain through indoctrination. I eventually broke free of their brainwashing and used all the training they gave me to escape.
So suffice to say, after most of my life being trained by the Syndicate to be a killing machine, I wasn't exactly a fan of them, so I ran to one of the planets they would never look.
Tartarus.
New planet, new problems though. Because the overlord of this shithole wanted me to help him, but I couldn't care even the smallest bit. I walked through the streets of this smog-filled planet and eventually came across the place I needed to be. A massive skyscraper that towered over Tartarus City. The home and base of operations of Hades, Cerberus Industries. I walked in and approached the secretary, a cute girl with long dark hair and tan skin.
She looked up at me, one eyebrow raised, "What can we help you with today, sir?"
"I'm here to talk to Hades."
"Mr. Hades is actually in a meeting with somebody right now. Would you like to schedule a consultation for our next available time which is…" she scrolled through a list of times, "In three months from today, at 5:00 PM?"
"Who is he talking with?"
She frowned, "That's confidential, sir."
I sighed, okay. It was time to get a little aggressive. I pulled the Wingman from the holster and shot one of the guards in the chest. Everyone in the lobby screamed and all the civilians scrambled for the exit in a panic. The secretary merely looked at the guard's corpse and frowned again.
"That was uncalled for."
I didn't have any clue how to interact with this woman.
"Who is he meeting with? I need to talk to him. Now."
She sighed, and looked at her screen, "He is currently meeting with a Mr. Kuben Blisk, in order to get a Champion for Tartarus in the Apex Games."
Kuben Blisk. Why does that name sound familiar? I wracked my brain but came up with nothing concrete. The Apex Games, though, I did know. A recent bloodsport that everyone was head over heels for. Where multiple people referred to as Legends fought to the death to become the Apex Champion.
It was currently just starting its first season which was probably why this Blisk guy was looking into getting more competitors. And what better place to look than Tartarus. It was only then that I realized all the guards in the room were pointing their guns at me. I elected to ignore that and leapt over the counter.
"What is his line?" I stared at her intently.
She looked indignant, "He is on line six."
"Thank you, gorgeous."
I pretended to not notice the slight blush that decorated her face and dialed up to his office. The phone rang a couple times, but was eventually answered.
"Cassidy, I told you not to interrupt this meeting! If you can't follow sim-"
"Shut the fuck up."
"Who is this?"
"Zuri Abara. I know you're busy right now, but I'm going to walk into that meeting right now and beat the shit out of you in front of this Apex Games fuckface."
A strong South African accent came through, he sounded amused, "Does he know he's on speaker?"
"I don't care."
"Mr. Abara, this is very inconvenient timing. Come back an-"
The other voice cleared his throat, "I disagree. Come up kid, I want to talk to you."
"It'll be a second before we can talk." I hung up the phone and looked at the secretary, "Which one is his office?"
"Top floor, you'll know it when you see the button."
I nodded and walked towards the elevator, the guards still had their guns trained on me. For some reason they haven't pumped me full of bullets. I wasn't gonna look a gift horse in the mouth though. I'd hate to massacre an entire lobby of guards. I stepped into the small box and looked at the floor options. The biggest button was an omega. Of course. I rolled my eyes and pressed the button.
After about a minute of going up the elevator, the doors dinged and slid open. On the other side was a large open room. A bunch of antiques decorated the walls, there was a large desk. Sat behind it was a large man. He was probably almost seven feet tall and dressed in a nice suit. His skin was dark and his head bald, but a bushy greying beard stuck to his face. Opposite of him was an older man in military gear. He looked to be in his seventies or so.
I stepped into the room.
"Alright Hades, I'm sick of you trying to kill me. So now I'm going to kill you."
"Going to? That's a bit presumptuous don't you think, Mr. Abara?"
"Shut up and die!"
Author's Note: This is kinda my first fic like... ever. So any thoughts and opinions? I thought about writing a fic about one of the existing Legends, and I kinda... didn't want to? I thought introducing a new Legend with some new interconnected lore might be interesting. The story starts right around the end of Season One and the beginning of Season Two. I really like Apex, and there aren't a lot of fics in this fandom. And I'm a big video game person, so I figured I'd write one. Anyway, thanks for reading. Lemme know what you thought lmao.
