"I- I just... I don't know what I want, Kagome" A few miles away Sesshomaru stops dead in his tracks and waits to hear the next idiotic thing out of his hanyo brothers mouth. Tears start brimming Kagome's eyes and her aura changes from her typical relaxed state to pure heartbreak. "Fool." Sesshomaru thinks to himself.
It was a perfect night for a walk on the beach, the moon was full and the wind was only but a gentle whisper. Kagome jumped at the opportunity when Inuyasha suggested they leave Sesshomaru's beach estate for some alone time, but this was the last thing she was expecting.
When Kagome first came back to the Feudal era after those three long agonizing years of being away, Inuyasha was over the moon. He was the one who suggested the group take a long trip to properly celebrate defeating Naraku and Kagome's return.
"Yo, Sesshomaru!" Inuyasha yelled as he pushed the massive solid wood doors open, walking in like he owned the place. Kagome and the others didn't dare enter after him, they knew Sesshomaru would not appreciate the surprise visit. "Inuyasha!" Kagome whispered timidly "This is Sesshomaru's house? You couldn't have found somewhere else to go?!" Sesshomaru had caught their scent when they were a few miles out but assumed they would pass by. He was slightly intrigued as to why he smelled Kagome's scent again after a few years, but it didn't interest him enough to look into it until they were at his front doors causing a commotion. Irritated and rolling his eyes he reluctantly pushed his papers back and stood up from his desk, wondering where the hell Jaken was to prevent such an intrusion.
Kagome sat quietly hugging her legs in the sand and watched the crashing waves slowly inch towards her toes. She sighed and put her chin on her knees in defeat with her eyes still fixated on the waves. She noticed something was different with her and Inuyasha, but thought it could be fixed. After all, they had only been reunited for about 2 weeks after being apart for so long. Though as she keeps listening to Inuyasha, her heart continues to shatter.
"I'm so, so sorry Kagome," Inuyasha continued softly, "so much has changed these past three years. I still see you as my best friend, and I don't want to lose that connection. I-." Kagome held her hand up, waving "It's okay, Inuyasha. I suppose I should have assumed you would move on not knowing if I would be able to come back through the well or not."
"Hn," Sesshomaru thought to himself "that's why I haven't caught her scent". He never did understand the miko's fascination with Inuyasha. Since barging into his home unannounced a few weeks back, Sesshomaru had been quietly observing the dynamic of the group out of slight boredom. Tonight, however, was unintentional eavesdropping. Sesshomaru wanted to take a walk around his grounds to escape the noisy castle. Rin had wanted to join him but he was thankful that he told her to stay back and play with the demon slayer and monk's children. Sesshomaru wondered why Inuyasha hadn't picked up on his scent yet, but assumed he was too enthralled in his conversation to realize he was close by.
"Friends?" Inuyasha asked Kagome, reaching his arms out. "Friends" Kagome said, returning his hug with a weary smile and tear filled eyes. "Do you mind if I have some time to myself to process all of this, Inuyasha?" Inuyasha's eyes darted around quickly to survey the area. "Uhh, yeah, sure." Inuyasha said. "Sorry again" he whispered as he leapt off toward the castle. Kagome returned her gaze to the ocean, wondering where to go from here. Tears she had kept from falling while Inuyasha spoke fell freely now, and as she put her forehead down to her knees she started sobbing.
