Sister Of The Sun And Moon
Chapter 1
Sun closed the doors to the Daycare and sighed. "Well, not that I mind watching over the children, but the end of the day is nice," he said.
Moon chuckled. "I agree," he said as he finished cleaning up the tables. "I'm going to check on the back doors to make sure they're locked. Don't want to have a break in like last week."
His counterpart nodded. "Yes. One of those teens nearly got hurt messing with the equipment back there," he said.
The naptime attendant headed to the outer doors and saw they were still open and he shook his head with a sigh. "Why didn't the last security guard to leave close this?" He asked himself before going to close the doors. A soft sound stopped him in his tracks and he paused, his head lifting up in confusion and he turned on his infrared sensors. Just as he spotted a heat signature nearby, he heard the sound again and his eyes widened as he recognized the cry of a child. And it was coming from the dumpster nearby.
Moon looked inside the empty dumpster and gasped in horror. There was a very small girl inside. She was very thin, covered in dirt, her hair tangled up with twigs, and wearing a very old, filthy, and torn brown dress. The girl was even covered with bruises, cuts, and scratches. Moon then noticed that she had wolf ears and a fox tail attached to her. She looked up at him with big grayish blue eyes as she shivered and tears fell off her eyes. There was a drawstring bag next to her, tied around her waist.
The naptime attendant stood there in shock, wondering who in the world had left a child, who was so tiny, in a dumpster. "What on Earth happened to you, little starlight?" He asked, keeping his voice soft so he wouldn't scare the baby.
He noticed the wolf ears seemed to perk up a little at hearing his voice and he couldn't help the smile that came to his face. "Come, little starlight," he said. "Let's get you inside. It'll be warmer there."
He reached out to her, his hands pausing in front of her to see if she'd let him pick her up. The little girl looked up at him and then lifted her arms up to him, which he took as a good sign that she at least wasn't too afraid of him. He picked her up with the upmost gentleness, cradling her in his arms before taking her inside the building, locking the doors behind him and heading back to the Daycare.
Sun looked up as he came in. "Is everything okay, Moon?" He asked worriedly.
"No," his counterpart said. "Someone left this poor child in the dumpster outside."
When Sun saw the child's injuries and that she had clearly not been cared for, he went into a full-blown panic. "Oh, no!" He exclaimed. "Who would do this to a baby?! She's so tiny! I'll get the first aid kit and some better clothes for her!"
With that, the daytime attendant took off rapidly while Moon took the baby into the kitchen, seeing the sink was clean and deciding the kitchen sink would be better to give the child in his arms a bath. "Alright, let's get you into a bath," he said.
As the sink was filling up with warm water, Moon undressed the baby, frowning as he saw more bruises and he shook his head, noting the baby had a full diaper too. "Whoever did this to you better hope I don't ever met them," he said to her, just managing to keep the growl out of his voice.
The baby looked up at him and he smiled as he got some soap and a washcloth. "Alright, starlight, into the bath," he said, picking her up and placing her very gently into the water.
The little girl began whimpering fearfully as she looked at the water, looking ready to cry harshly, which made Moon even angrier at whoever had hurt the child. He took a deep breath and rubbed her head gently. "Shh, shh, it's alright, little one," he cooed. "The water won't hurt you. I'll make sure of it."
He placed a hand on her back to help her feel a bit more steady and to his relief, she began to calm down. Seeing this, he smiled and had an idea, pulling out a small boat that was a bath toy from behind his back. "Here, little one," he said, placing the boat in the water and it floated. "See? The water is safe."
The baby calmed down more was curious about the toy, playing with it as Moon finished cleaning her up just as Sun returned and he had not only the first aid kit, but also some new clothes and a towel, along with a blanket. "I hope I guessed her size right," he said.
His counterpart nodded as he took a towel, noting it was warm, and wrapped it around the tiny baby and started drying her off gently. When he was gently patting the water off her face, he noticed that her cheeks were red and she looked tired. Moon put his hand on her forehead and gasped at he felt how warm it is. "Oh you poor baby, your burning up," he cooed softly as he picked her up and cuddled her close.
Sun opened the first aid kid and began looking around. "We have medicine for infants, but is her illness from her injuries or something else?" He asked.
Moon checked on the child's injuries and sighed. "Well, good news and bad news," he said. "Bad news is she has a cold. Good news is those cuts are not infected."
"That's a relief," his counterpart said before he measured out some medicine and held it up to the baby's mouth. "Okay, little sunbeam. Let's give you some medicine."
The baby looked at him with big eyes and at the mouth syringe warily. "It's alright, starlight. It's something to help you feel better," Moon cooed soothingly.
Sun reached over and gently tickled the baby's chin and to his relief, she giggled. Using this opportunity, he gave her the medicine and she made a face as she swallowed it, but she didn't spit it out. "Good girl," he said, gently rubbing her head, being mindful of her wolf ears. "Now to take care of those cuts and bruises."
"And then something to eat," Moon said. "Sun, can you tend to her injuries while I find her some food?"
"Of course," Sun said. "I think we have some applesauce that would be easy on her tummy. And I think we have some goat's milk in the fridge. At least I hope so."
His counterpart nodded and went to find the food, relieved to find that they did indeed have applesauce and goat's milk. Putting the applesauce in a small bowl and finding a spoon that was safe for a child, along with a bottle for the goat's milk, he headed back to see Sun had bandaged the child's injuries and dressed her in cute footed pajamas that had suns and moons all over it. It was slightly big on her, but that was fine.
"Peek-a-boo!" Sun cooed to the child, covering his face with his hands and having his hands act like trap doors to reveal his face.
The baby girl was laughing at the bright animatronic's silly actions and Moon chuckled. "How is she doing?" He asked as he entered the kitchen.
"Her fever went down a bit and her tummy's growling, so she's definitely hungry," the daytime animatronic said. "But she's happier. Her little giggles are just adorable as she is."
"I agree," his counterpart said before he picked up the child and cradled her in his left arm, holding out the bottle for her. Seeing the bottle of milk, the little girl reached eagerly for it and he chuckled, giving it to her. "Not too fast, little one," he cautioned. "Don't want you to choke."
The child began drinking the milk hungrily and Sun took the opportunity to look into the bag that Moon had set aside when giving the baby a bath. "I wonder what's in here," he said, finding the bag was a bit heavy. He looked inside and to his surprise, there was a locket, a wolf plushie, a galaxy-themed blanket, and a folder containing all of her documents and files. He took a look and a frown made it to his face before he looked at his counterpart. "Moon, take a look at these."
The naptime attendant looked at the documents while still feeding the young girl, the information on them making his eyes widen in shock. "So, her name is Katie," he said before noticing all of her documents were on her. "Something about this isn't adding up."
"Yeah," Sun agreed. "These documents and files...someone took the time to collect all these and put them in here, along with gathering what looks to be Katie's personal items."
Moon nodded. "But who left her in the dumpster?" He asked.
"Could whoever gathered these have been running from someone and hid Katie in the dumpster and then led their pursuer away so that Katie would be safe?" The daytime attendant asked. "Maybe someone who cared about her?"
"Perhaps," his counterpart said before seeing the files listed all the tests the baby had been put through. He barely held back an angry growl. "They treated her as a test subject."
Sun shook his head sadly. "Given what she's been through, I'm surprised she's not afraid of us," he said. "Some kids are a bit afraid of us."
"Maybe because she knows we won't hurt her," Moon said.
"True," the daytime attendant said. "And we've given her medicine, a bath, new clothes, and food." He placed a hand gently on her head and noted her forehead was much cooler now. "Her temperature is going down steadily back to normal. It's at 99 degrees right now."
"Good," the naptime attendant said with a nod. "We'll keep an eye on her tonight to make sure it doesn't spike again or go too low. We don't want her getting hypothermia."
Sun nodded, seeing the child was nearly asleep in his counterpart's arms. "Looks like she's ready to fall asleep," he said. "I'll see about making a bed for her."
As Moon watched, the bright-colored animatronic got some blankets and pillows, forming a makeshift bed and doing his best to make it as comfy as possible. When he finished, the blue-colored animatronic gently set the child down on the bed. "There we go, starlight," he cooed gently as he and Sun tucked her in, the latter giving her two plushies representing the two Daycare attendants.
Katie yawned before closing her eyes, snuggling into the warm bed and falling fast asleep, to which her two guardians smiled and went about their duties, keeping an eye on the sleeping child.
Awww! Sun and Moon are just awesome, aren't they? :)
