Chapter 48 – Betrayal

"Heh, you weren't kidding when you said you had grown stronger, Leon! The quality and quantity of your aura have increased!"

"Yes, going through a couple near-death experiences tends to do that to a person, a concept you should be intimately familiar with!"

Leon said as he shot a barrage of light blades at Takeshi, who jumped up to avoid them before countering with a wave of fire from his mouth. The two youths were wearing their respective Scale Mails, with Takeshi using Savage Predator Incarnation, as they clashed in a desert-like terrain littered with rock outcroppings all around them. Some distance away from the two boys, Dia was observing them, her hands clasped in prayer and a faint glow enveloping her body.

[Finally, I get the chance to make mincemeat out of you, Ddraig the shithead!] Grendel bellowed while laughing. [I'll tear apart that meat sack you call a partner and drag out your miserable soul from his mangled body before crushing you!]

[Even if you were capable of such feats, the likes of you could never hope to defeat me, Grendel.] Ddraig's voice echoed from one of the Scale Mail's jewels. [Have you perhaps forgotten the dozens of times I crushed your mangled corpse beneath my feet? Did all these blows to the head give you long-term amnesia apart from further reducing the already diminutive size of what you call a brain?]

[You sound like that pissant Albion!] Grendel growled. [The past is the past, and now is now! That's why—]

"Put a sock in it, Grendel!" Takeshi shouted as he parried the incoming Fragarach with a kick. "Your trash-talking isn't helping one bit here!"

The Scale Mail's gauntlets ignited as Takeshi launched two massive fire waves at Leon. Gathering a large amount of wind around his blade, Leon split them apart with a single slash. He countered with a holy fire breath, which enveloped Takeshi's armor, but inflicted negligible damage.

Stomping the ground once, Takeshi summoned a raging blizzard with him in the epicenter, turning his surroundings into an icy wasteland. Leon avoided being turned into an ice statue by enveloping himself in holy aura, but was forced to take to the sky once numerous ice spikes began sprouting all around him.

"Tch!"

Leon clicked his tongue in irritation upon noticing that Takeshi was above him, aiming a kick at his head. A large ice spear sprouted from his opponent's boot, forcing Leon to bring up his shield to defend.

[Boost! Boost!]

Activating the Boosted Gear's ability, Leon increased his power, stopping Takeshi's attack with some effort. Shattering the oversized ice spear with a couple of light spears, Leon shot a barrage of light bullets at Takeshi. Enveloping his armor in ice, Takeshi defended himself and then spun around as his armor was enveloped by flames next, releasing several flame whips that aimed for Leon.

Dodging them with ease by enveloping his body in holy wind, Leon slammed on Takeshi at high speeds, sending him crashing on the ground below. He chased after him, only to abruptly alter his course as several large icebergs erupted from the icy field and aimed for him.

Slamming his fists on the ground, Takeshi grinned beneath his helmet as large flame pillars erupted from all around him, transforming the former icy wasteland into a fiery hellscape.

[Revolve On. Hazard.]

Switching to Eight Branch Ethereal Surge, Takeshi snapped his fingers as he formed a massive cyclone around him that absorbed the surrounding flames. He then directed it to Leon while also adding a large amount of black thunder at it.

"Not bad, but don't think you're the only one who can command the wind!"

[Boost! Boost! Boost!]

Spreading his eight red wings, Leon generated a large tornado of holy wind, smashing it against the incoming storm. The two attacks fought against each other for a bit before collapsing, causing a shockwave that ravaged the area and almost sent Leon tumbling out of the sky. Before he could regain his balance, Takeshi's chariot slammed on him from the side, sending him crashing on the ground.

"Got you!"

Takeshi declared as he pounced on his fallen opponent, his seven thunder-clad tails aimed at him. Raising the glowing Shield of Evalach, Leon formed several small defensive magic circles around him, blocking the tails' attacks and Takeshi's kick. Forcing himself up with a blast of wind, Leon put his arms up in a cross sign as Ddraig's voice echoed.

[Judgment Ray!]

A powerful wave of holy and draconic energy erupted from Leon's arms, aiming for his opponent. Takeshi wrapped his seven tails around him, placed his chariot in front of him and encased himself in a black wind barrier, but the beam tore through all his defenses and sent him tumbling backwards.

[Boost! Boost! Boost!]

Leon raised his strength once again as his leg was enveloped by a mix of holy and draconic energy. Spreading his wings once again, he aimed a flying side kick at Takeshi. In response, he pressed the sides of his buckle once.

[Charge! Hazard Overflow!]

Takeshi's remaining tail wrapped itself around his leg as a torrent of draconic aura, black wind, thunder and venom enveloped it.

[Venom Blast Fever!]

[Ascension Storm Impact!]

Two announcements echoed as Takeshi's roundhouse kick and Leon's kick were about to clash. However, at the last second, Leon changed his direction by releasing a blast of concentrated wind from his sword to shoot upwards, causing Takeshi's attack to miss.

Smirking beneath his helmet, Leon snapped his fingers. Four oversized light pillars descended from the sky and struck Takeshi's limbs, restraining him. Before he could gather enough power to blow them away, the tip of a blade was placed above his throat.

"The end." Leon stated, dismissing his Scale Mail and offering Takeshi his hand. "It was a very good fight though. Are you sure you've been doing this for only a few months? I've been training for years now, and you're already close to my level. Is this what they call a genius?"

"Hardly." Takeshi said as he grabbed Leon's hand, with the latter pulling him up. "It's all thanks to Beelzebub-sama's time dilation field, which allowed us to extend our training time by a large amount. Also, did you finally get the Boosted Gear to start announcing your special moves as well?"

"Ddraig was reluctant at first, but he came around to my way of thinking." Leon grinned. "Shouting your techniques is alright, but as expected, having your transformation device announce them is the way to go."

"Damn straight." Takeshi nodded, but then scowled. "More importantly though, don't get a big head, Leon! You may have won this round, but that doesn't mean squat! Just you watch, I'll turn it all around and crush you for sure! In fact, let's go at it once more! I won't rest until I've established a wide gap between us!"

"It's nice to see that you're as enthusiastic and relentless as always, but let's not overdo it." Leon said, glancing at the ruined landscape all around them. "Don't forget, men must always be cool. Boiling water is but vapor."

"Nonsense!" Takeshi said, wagging his finger at him. "All men must be fiery. If the spark isn't lit early, they won't rise to become fireworks."

"The age-old argument, eh…?" Leon sighed in exasperation. "In any case, I don't want to put additional burdens on Dia, who's already doing her best in maintaining this artificial space around us, by rampaging in here. Moreover, there's someone else who wants to challenge me from the looks of it."

Takeshi turned to the direction Leon was staring at and saw Yuuto walking towards them.

"My apologies for interrupting you two, but I have a request for Leon-kun." Yuuto said. "I've heard from both Irina-san and Xenovia that you are among the most skilled swordsmen in the Church. As such, I would like to cross swords with you if possible. I'm sure it will be a great learning experience for me."

"Why not?" Leon smiled as he drew Fragarach from its sheath once again. "We still have some time until breakfast. Plus, I'd like to take a good look at Kiba-kun's skill with the blade. Should we keep this simple and use only our swords and physical abilties?"

"Sounds good to me." Yuuto said, conjuring a Holy Demonic Sword and assuming his stance. "Ready when you are, Leon-kun."

"Then, let's begin!"

Following Leon's words, Yuuto dashed forward, his blade aiming for his opponent's head. Parrying it with a lightning-fast counter that almost made it seem like his blade had disappeared, Leon pressed on the attack, driving Yuuto back. Using his superior speed to flank the Reincarnated Angel, Yuuto aimed for his legs next. Evading by jumping to the air, Leon ducked underneath Yuuto's rapid slashes and delivered a riposte that almost knocked his opponent's blade out of his hands.

"They're good…"

Takeshi remarked as he observed the duel while sitting cross-legged on top of a nearby rock, a thin sheet of draconic aura enveloping his body as he used this opportunity to get some extra training in. Although he was a complete amateur when it came to the art of the sword, he could make a rough estimate of his sword-wielding comrades' overall skill and discern the unique traits each of them displayed.

When it came to Xenovia and Irina, who were fighting in another area of the field, the former's style could only be described as solid, using her superior strength and a minimal amount of movements to defend herself against her opponent before unleashing devastating attacks. Irina, on the other hand, was more of a trickster, using the form-changing properties of her Excalibur Mimic to keep her opponent unbalanced while aiming to exploit whatever openings they presented.

Yuuto was also similar to Irina, though he relied more heavily on his speed and agility to overwhelm an opponent by attacking from multiple angles, a strategy he was employing against Leon at the moment. The Red Dragon Emperor was unfazed by that though, his blade moving with an elegance and grace even professional dancers would be envious of as he countered Yuuto's strikes with ease and drove him into a corner in a methodical manner.

Takeshi was by no means an artistic individual, but even he would be hard-pressed to describe Leon's swordsmanship as anything other than a work of art. There was undeniable beauty in the way his friend wielded his sword, to the point where even a casual observer would be mesmerized by his movements.

Realizing that the tide of the battle was steadily shifting to his opponent's favor, Yuuto delivered an overhead slash, only to maneuver to Leon's side and change the blade's trajectory, aiming for the side. Leon was unfazed as he countered with Fragarach's pommel, striking Yuuto's blade and sending him skidding backwards. Before Yuuto could recover, Lon was upon him.

"Trinity Streizer."

Striking at Yuuto with three slashes in a triangle formation after speaking, Leon overwhelmed his guard and knocked his blade out of his hands. Falling on his knee, Yuuto reached for his sword, only for Leon to kick it away as he placed Fragarach near his neck.

"…It's my loss." Yuuto said with a bitter smile. "Leon-kun is truly an expert, if not a master with the blade, and that was without using your usual sword and shield style. I haven't felt this overwhelmed ever since the time I faced Arthur Pendragon a while back. If there were any dregs of childish pride left in me, this display has destroyed them…"

"Don't look down on yourself, Kiba-kun." Leon said as he sheathed Fragarach. "You're a skilled swordsman, and I can tell you'll grow even stronger in the future as long as you keep honing your skills. From my side, I'll be your sparring partner any time you wish."

"Then, I'll be looking forward to receiving further guidance from you." Yuuto said. "I have to ask though, who was Leon-kun's sword teacher? They must have been a formidable sword wielder themselves."

"I've had several instructors so far, but the one who taught me the most and helped me develop my style was His Eminence Ewald Cristaldi." Leon said. "He's considered a prodigy within the Church, and he's renowned for his ability to masterfully control up to three Excalibur fragments at the same time. Irina-san and Xenovia-san have trained under him as well to better control their Excaliburs, as have a large number of Church warriors."

"The greatest Excalibur wielder in our time, eh?" Yuuto said, looking intrigued. "I'd like to cross swords with him as well if the opportunity presents itself at some point."

"Not to the point of killing him though, I hope?" Takeshi, who had joined the two of them, asked. "You and Excalibur have a painful history, and I wouldn't want you to relapse into old behaviors."

"That chapter of my life has closed thanks to you and everyone else, and my resentment for the blade is no more." Yuuto said. "I only wish to test myself against a swordsman of his caliber, and perhaps take a couple of steps forward on the path to becoming the ultimate Knight."

Takeshi nodded in satisfaction. At that moment, Irina and Xenovia approached the three boys, looking banged up and exhausted.

"Ugh, the muscle-brained Xenovia has become even more of a savage beast during the time we were apart." Irina said while frowning, the Excalibur Mimic in her hands changing forms from a katana to a simple bracelet. "I was sure I'd join the Lord in his eternal slumber a few times back there. Even so, I still held my own pretty well!"

"Yes, Irina's fighting style and weapon is as annoying to deal with as I remember." Xenovia said with a grimace. "Even so, today's match is my victory with a five to three score. Better luck next time."

"You've said it now, Xenovia." Irina smirked, and then waved at the boys. "Hey there, everyone! Once again, this was a great way to get our blood pumping and start the day with a bang, right? I wonder what we're having for breakfast because I'm starving. Even though I'm used to fasting, I just can't help but gorge myself when it comes to my homeland's dishes. Oh, Michael-sama, please forgive your weak-willed servant…"

"I've also worked up an appetite with all this moving around, so let's find out what the masters of the kitchen have prepared for us." Takeshi said, forming a small communication magic circle next to his mouth. "Dia-san, you can remove the barrier now."

Following Takeshi's words, the scenery all around them began glitching. After a couple of seconds, it vanished, with the group finding themselves in the first underground floor of the Ryuugamine residence that served as a training area. Dia, who had been maintaining the pseudo space all this time, let out a sigh of relief as she wiped the sweat off her face. Koneko, Gasper and Pandora, who had been training further away from the other two groups, found themselves next to everyone else once the pseudo space vanished.

"Great job, Dia." Leon gave her a thumbs-up. "Being able to create and maintain an artificial dimension of this size for as long as you did despite the amount of power we were throwing around in there is a major accomplishment. Gone are the days when you could only form a tiny pseudo space around you."

"…Not enough." Dia said, shaking her head. "…Needs more."

"More, you say?" Pandora raised an eyebrow. "Does Dia-san intend to create a new universe or something? Come to think of it, wasn't there a Longinus with an ability like that?"

"That would be Innovate Clear." Leon said. "It has the ability to create an ideal world in another dimension that can be filled with near-perfect imitations of living beings. You could say it's a mix of Dimension Lost and Annihilation Maker's abilties."

"…Formidable." Koneko remarked. "The user's creation powers would be on the level of a high-ranking God."

"Yes, and that's why its wielders are also known as 'the Impersonator of God'." Leon said. "The only downside is that Innovate Clear's constructs can only exist within the world created by the Sacred Gear. If that wasn't the case, it would be even more dreadful than Annihilation Maker, which is already a terrifying Longinus."

"What about its possessor?" Takeshi asked. "Do the Three Factions have any clues regarding their identity of whereabouts? I remember Sensei saying that our research departments have doubled their efforts when it comes to locating powerful Sacred Gear wielders in order to prevent the Khaos Brigade from recruiting them."

"Unfortunately, when it comes to the remaining Longinus, they've come up empty so far." Leon said. "I've heard from Raziel-sama that Ajuka Beelzebub has a lead on them and is concentrating his efforts on finding them, but nothing more than that. Apparently, when it comes to Innovate Clear and Telos Karma, there are some…peculiar circumstances surrounding them."

"Peculiar how?"

"I don't know all the details, but some reports indicate that Innovate Clear's possessor has created their own world in a separate dimension and shaped it into a massive MMORPG of a sorts for whatever reason." Leon responded to Xenovia. "Telos Karma's possessor is believed to reside in that world as well, but that's all we've been able to find out so far."

"They created a game-like world?" Irina frowned. "I wonder why. Is the wielder a game addict, or maybe they were so dissatisfied with the world that they wished to escape into an ideal one?"

"C-Creating a world of my own…" Gasper said. "That sounds nice. If only I had Innovate Clear instead of these eyes… I would have created a world with no s-sun, no garlic, and no p-people around for miles on end…"

"…Good thing Gya-kun isn't its possessor then." Koneko said, directing a half-lidded stare at her fellow first-year student. "Transforming from a shut-in to a super shut-in, that's the worst powerup."

"Seems like you're in need of more training to further toughen up that frail mental fortitude of yours, Gasper." Xenovia said, a glint in her eyes. "Shall we start with fifty laps around the house?"

"E-Eeeeeeeeeeek!" Gasper shrieked in fright, rushing to hide behind Takeshi. "P-Please don't say such things while brandishing Durandal, Xenovia-senpai! I don't want to be the victim of a V-Vampire huuuuuuunt!"

Everyone chuckled at that exchange as they took the stairs leading to the ground floor.

"I wonder, will Dia-sama be able to reach the level of Innovate Clear one day?" Irina asked. "Being able to create an entire world just by snapping your fingers sounds amazing."

"…Maybe." Dia said. "…Depends."

"Well, she can form moderate-sized pseudo spaces, she can impose certain basic rules and laws within them, and her powers are still growing." Leon said. "Only time will tell, I guess. It would be very convenient if you could mimic and apply the time dilation properties of Ajuka Beelzebub's barriers in your artificial spaces for now."

"…Will try."

Dia said, looking determined. Upon arriving at the ground floor, the group headed for the dining table. Hiroto was already there, putting down his newspaper upon noticing everyone's approach.

"Good morning, everyone." Hiroto greeted the group with a smile. "I see you've all been working hard as usual. Takeshi is one thing, but don't the rest of you think you're taking the upcoming sports festival a bit too seriously? Winning is good and all, but enjoying yourselves to the fullest and savoring such occasions should be your priority. Speaking of which, I've managed to take a couple of days off, so Shiori and I will be there cheering for you all."

"That's great to hear!" Takeshi said, looking excited. "In that case, I will work even harder than usual and triumph for sure. There's no way I'm letting my parents witness a disgraceful performance!"

"No, no, I didn't say that to get you even more fired up…" Hiroto sighed before turning to Irina. "Shidou-san, from what I've heard you used to be a resident of Kuoh before the great fire that destroyed a part of it. How do you feel about coming back to your hometown after so long?"

"To be honest, I've missed it more than I realized." Irina said with a wistful expression. "I couldn't help but spend most of my free time wandering around Kuoh for the first couple of days after I arrived, reminiscing about the past. It's a little sad to know that Kuoh will undergo major changes once the redevelopment project is complete, but it can't be helped. Ah, also, you have my gratitude for letting me stay here even though your house is already crowded."

"Don't mention it, Shidou-san." Hiroto made a dismissive gesture. "We have more space than we know what to do with, so there's no problem. I'm pretty sure we could accommodate a dozen more people, and there would still be room to spare."

"I guess Rias going overboard in some areas was a good thing…"

Takeshi muttered. Like Hiroto had said, it had been decided a few days before that Irina would stay in the Ryuugamine residence due to her close relationship with Xenovia. However, Takeshi suspected that part of the reason for her stay here was that the Church's higher-ups had ordered her to monitor him due to his status as a dangerous factor. Even if that was the case however, he didn't intend to hold it against her. Orders were orders, and Irina was fun to hang around with due to her cheerful personality and their shared love of Sentai.

As for Leon and Dia, they lived in apartments close to the abandoned church in Kuoh Town alongside Asia and the rest of the Church's support personnel in the area. Although he had been more than happy to accommodate them as well, Leon had refused on the grounds that some of the Church higher-ups might give them grief over that.

I guess they don't feel comfortable with having their trump cards in even closer proximity to renowned Devils like us. Takeshi thought. Can't blame them for that though, annoying as it is. Building trust between former enemies is a long and arduous process.

The arrival of Shiori, Rias and Akeno, who were carrying several dishes on their hands, brought Takeshi back to the present. Once breakfast was served and everyone was seated, Shiori turned to Leon.

"Once again, please relay my gratitude to your mother, Leon-kun." Shiori said while everyone ate. "It was thanks to her assistance that I managed to avoid being jailed back in Rome."

"I'll let her know, but you should be more careful in the future, Shiori-san." Leon said. "Trespassing into the Vatican and trying to blackmail members of the College of Cardinals for information regarding the recent terrorist attack was a bit too much, don't you think?"

"When it comes to the pursuit of truth, the ends justify the means." Shiori said. "A journalist must use every means at their disposal to separate facts from fiction, and this case was no different. There's definitely something bigger going on there, I can feel it. Since we're on the subject of Olivia-san, who seems to have a lot of influence within the Catholic Church, perhaps you could put me in touch with her and—"

"Out of the question, Shiori-san." Leon said, making an X with his hands. "I'm pretty sure my mother exhausted all the goodwill and favors she had gathered over the years to get you out of that pinch. In this case, perhaps you had best let sleeping dogs lie."

"The words 'give up' don't exist in my dictionary, especially since I can smell a big scoop here." Shiori said with evident fighting spirit. "I'll get to the bottom of this one way or another."

"So, this is where Takeshi's stubbornness comes from…"

Leon said while sighing. Meanwhile, Takeshi was having a hushed conversation with Rias.

"We'll appear in a television program in the Underworld this weekend?"

Takeshi was surprised by this unexpected announcement as Rias spoke.

"Yes, it was decided a couple of days back." Rias said. "Due to our growing popularity because of the Youth Rating Game Tournament, one of the Underworld's media tycoons suggested that the young Kings and their Peerages would participate in a television special and be interviewed in front of a live audience. If I had to make a comparison, we've become the equivalent of the human world's idols, so people are getting curious about us."

"That's nice, I guess, though they should have given us a heads-up much earlier." Takeshi said. "I mean, I'm not prepared in the slightest for an interview. What if I make a fool of myself by saying something stupid?"

"Don't worry too much about it." Rias said. "Most of the questions will be directed at me, so you'll be fine as long as you don't say or do anything outrageous during the interview. Compared to the upcoming game, getting through a simple Q&A session should be a piece of cake."

"The game…" Takeshi said, clenching his fists. "That bastard Diodora had better watch himself. He can use as many snakes as he wants, and they still won't be enough to save that brat from me. Once I get my hands on him, I'll make him rue the day he decided to toy with other people's lives and betray the Underworld."

"Ara, ara, while I love seeing your wild side coming out, you should restrain your killing intent while we're all eating together." Akeno said. "I understand why you're so passionate about it, but we wouldn't want to scare your parents and spoil this pleasant breakfast, yes? Save your fury towards him for the game."

"While I'll enjoy taking that arrogant lowlife down a peg and exposing his crimes in front of the entire Underworld, there's something that's troubling me regarding this whole affair." Takeshi said. "When I relayed my conversation with Vali to Azazel-sensei, he didn't seem that surprised. It's as if he was already aware of Diodora's betrayal. If that was the case though, why didn't he and the Devil Kings act sooner? Why are they counting on us to somehow expose Diodora during the game instead of gathering evidence and convicting him beforehand?"

"It does sound suspicious when you put it that way, but on the other hand, you might be overthinking this." Akeno said. "Either way, Azazel-sensei hasn't steered us wrong so far. Let's believe in him and focus on doing our best in the upcoming game."

"I never thought the day would come where you would speak about Azazel in a favorable manner." Rias said. "Akeno's hatred of Fallen Angels in general seems to have dissipated. I'm glad for that though, and also for the fact that you're on speaking terms with your father again. I'm mortified that I wasn't able to do anything about it during all these years that you've been part of my family…"

"Don't beat yourself over that." Akeno smiled at her friend. "You weren't in a position to help me with that issue, what with my father being a high-ranking member of an enemy force at the time and me being obstinate. Also, never forget that none of this would have been possible if you hadn't saved my life back then and done everything you could to make me feel a part of your family. For all that, I will be eternally grateful to you, Rias."

"No need to thank me, Akeno." Rias smiled back. "Since we're on the subject of parents, will Baraqiel be present during the sports festival?"

"He said that he would take some time off no matter what with a passionate tone…something which concerns me." Akeno frowned. "While I was speaking to him, he sounded almost like Zeoticus-sama whenever he gushes over you, Rias."

"He's 'that' type of parent as well then?" Rias said, an expression of pity on her face as she patted her Queen's shoulder. "In that case, I won't sugarcoat it; welcome to the true Hell, Akeno. However, know that you're not alone. Everyone in the Overbearing Relatives Victim Alliance will be there to support you no matter what."

"I wasn't aware you had started another club, Rias." Takeshi smirked. "I'd say you're overreacting if I hadn't met Sirzechs-sama, Zeoticus-sama and Leviathan-sama in person. Perhaps being too clingy and enthusiastic about their children and younger siblings is a characteristic of all long-lived races who can't procreate easily?"

"Maybe, but that doesn't make their behavior any less irritating and embarrassing…" Rias said with a sigh. "Putting that matter aside, Azazel said that you should visit his lab later today. Something about putting the final touches on a special power-up device for you."

"Oh, that sounds interesting, though I don't think I'll need something like that to crush Diodora." Takeshi said. "Thanks to our new sparring partners, I'm in tip-top shape…even though Leon's got an annoying lead on me…"

Once everyone had finished their breakfast, Takeshi stood up to help with cleaning up the table and carrying the dishes to the kitchen. While he was busy placing the dishes in the washing machine, Shiori approached Takeshi.

"Mom?" Takeshi said upon noticing her. "Is something wrong?"

"You could say that." Shiori said. "I'm little worried about Pandora-san. Over the past few days, I've caught her staring at nothing with an empty expression on her face while being still as a statue. Once, I thought she had fainted while standing upright. Is there something wrong with her, and if so, can we do anything to help her?"

"You noticed it as well, huh?" Takeshi said. "I've confronted Pandora about it, but she insists there's just a lot on her mind lately, hence why she gets lost in her own world at times. Rest assured that if these episodes keep happening, I'll drag her to the hospital by force if need be."

"That's good to hear." Shiori nodded in approval. "That girl is an important guest, but more than that, as long as she lives under our roof, she's a member of our family. That's why, we'll be there for her no matter what she's going through."

"You said it, Mom."

"I just hope this has nothing to do with you four-timing habits." Shiori said, her disapproval evident. "If she's feeling down because of that love life drama you've found yourself into, I'll be forced to take drastic measures. Even if you are my son, I—"

"If her current condition had anything to do with my love life, I would have already taken the appropriate measures." Takeshi said, cutting off Shiori. "Pandora getting hurt because of me is the last thing I want, and the same holds true when it comes to the other girls. I know how this looks, but I need you to trust me on this for now. I promise…one day soon, I'll explain everything and it'll all make sense."

"I have a feeling it's going be an interesting tale." Shiori said. "It'll have to be if it can explain why you've formed a pseudo harem of a sorts in a satisfactory manner. Just…be careful, please."

"Aren't I always?"

"You don't want me to give you an honest answer here."

Shiori said as she left the kitchen.

"…Shiori-san was scolding you again?"

Koneko said, having stepped into the kitchen after Shiori had left.

"You know her." Takeshi said. "Whenever the chance presents itself, she always nags about my relationship with all of you. She has a point according to the logic she's employing, but still… More importantly, about Pandora, have you noticed anything strange about her? You two spend a lot of time together, so maybe you've seen something I haven't?"

"…Not really." Koneko said. "In front of me at least, she hasn't shown any weird behavior. I'll keep a closer eye on her and inform you if something happens. However, don't expect me to work for free."

"What a greedy little Devil you are." Takeshi grinned as he leaned forward and kissed Koneko. "That's a small down payment. Expect more later in the form of sweets and more…intimate stuff."

"…My boyfriend is the best."

Koneko smiled as she wrapped her hands around Takeshi, with the two of them joining the others as they prepared to head for school.

A few days later…

"At least there wasn't any need for the long train ride this time…"

Takeshi muttered. The Gremory group had arrived at the basement of a large television station in Lilith, the Underworld's capital, after teleporting there through magic circle. The ones who had rushed to meet them were the producer and several assistants.

"Welcome, Rias Gremory-sama and her servants. We are glad to have you here today. Please, follow us."

The producer led them to an elevator while having a discussion with Rias about the final details of the upcoming interview. The elevator brought them to the top floor, which was filled with several strange devices operating on demonic power and large posters that depicted the young Kings participating in the tournament.

At that moment, a familiar group led by a burly young man walked towards Rias and her Peerage from the end of the corridor.

"Sairaorg." Rias said, raising her hand in greeting. "So, you are here too. Have you finished your interview already?"

"It's good to see you again, Rias." Sairaorg said. "As for my interview, no, it hasn't begun yet. We were making our way to the studio. I assume that's the case for you as well, right?"

"Indeed." Rias said. "Also, congratulations for your victory against Zephyrdor. I expected nothing less from my cousin and the strongest young Devil. Watching your match ignited our fighting spirit even more."

"I'm glad to hear that." Sairaorg said. "I watched your match against Sona Sitri as well, and I have to say, it was a valuable learning experience. Regardless of how much power one has, even a slight opening is enough to cost you the battle. Moreover, Sacred Gears hide a lot of possibilities that can be used to turn a match around, and their versatility cannot be overlooked. Compatibility and terrain are also important factors in the game. Even so—"

A smile appeared on Sairaorg's face as he put his hand on Takeshi's shoulder.

"I desire to fight you with pure power alone." Sairaorg said, his fighting spirit evident. "An honest clash with each side throwing everything they've got against the other is my ideal. If you can grow even stronger when the time comes for our battle, or perhaps even fully awaken your Sacred Gear's capabilities, nothing would make me happier."

"I'll do my best not to disappoint you then." Takeshi smirked, his eyes locked on the young man before him. "Keep the seat of the strongest youth warm, because I'm coming for it and you very soon, Sairaorg-san."

"I wouldn't have it any other way, Ryuugamine Takeshi." Sairaorg said with a wide grin, taking his hand off Takeshi's shoulder. "I should be off. Wouldn't want to keep the audience waiting. Good luck in your upcoming match with Diodora Astaroth, Rias."

"Thank you, Sairaorg."

Once Sairaorg had taken his leave, an assistant arrived to lead the Gremory group into a large studio. Staff could be seen running around, putting the final touches and arranging the necessary equipment. Upon noticing the arrival of the Gremory group, a young lady, who seemed to be the interviewer, approached them.

"Greetings, everyone." The interviewer said. "I am the announcer of Underworld broadcast studio one. A pleasure to be working with you today."

"The feeling is mutual." Rias said as she shook the interviewer's hand while looking around. "Judging from the number of available seats, there's going to be quite the turnout today."

"That's to be expected." The interviewer smiled. "Princess Rias was quite famous to begin with, and the members of your group have also grown in popularity as well. That's especially true for Kiba Yuuto-san and Himejima Akeno-san. The former is getting a lot of female fans, while the latter is getting a large number of male ones."

"I guess you two made quite an impression during the game, Kiba-san, Akeno-san." Pandora said. "I have to work harder from now on so I can be on the same level as you guys."

"It's to be expected that our resident handsome guy would have ladies of all ages lusting after him, but I'm not sure I like the idea of Akeno being hounded by male fans." Takeshi said, a dissatisfied expression on his face. "If they take it too far, I might have to resort to violence to keep you safe."

"Aw, you're jealous?" Akeno smirked, drawing closer to Takeshi. "That's so cute. However, you don't have to worry about anything. I belong to you alone, now and forever."

"I wasn't jealous…"

Takeshi grumbled, prompting Akeno to chuckle as she kissed him on his cheek.

"Judging from your…imposing presence, you must be Ryuugamine Takeshi-san." The interview said, looking somewhat uncomfortable at his presence. "We have made some special arrangements for you, so we'd appreciate it if you cooperated with us by participating in a second interview in another studio before the main one."

"First time I'm hearing that." Takeshi frowned, feeling that this was suspicious. "What's the purpose of this extra interview?"

"It seems your armored form made a strong impression on the children and teenagers watching the Rating Game between your group and the Sitri group." The interviewer began explaining. "Because of that, your popularity among the younger generation has started growing. With that in mind, the matriarch of the Gremory family conceived a certain project, one that requires your cooperation. This special interview is part of it. I have the necessary documents about it from the Gremory family right here."

The interview passed on several documents to Rias, who conjured a small magic circle on her hands as she verified the signatures on them.

"These are my family's seals alright." Rias said after she had finished checking the documents. "I wonder why neither Mother nor Father informed me about this initiative though, especially since it concerns my servant."

"You would have to ask them that yourself." The interviewer said. "Now, please follow my assistant, Ryuugamine Takeshi-kun. She will bring you to the studio."

"Since Venelana-sama is the one who arranged this, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of room for arguments." Takeshi said with a grin. "Not to mention, I'm curious to see what this is all about. Then, I'll see you guys in a bit."

After saying so, Takeshi followed after the assistant, who seemed to be doing her best to remain several steps ahead of him.

Later…

"I w-want to go h-home…"

Gasper said with a small voice as he slumped on his chair, exhausted from having to face such a large audience. The Gremory group was currently relaxing in the building's cafeteria, having finished the Q&A session a while back, in order to unwind for a bit before heading back home.

"…You did well, Gya-kun." Koneko patted Gasper's head while enjoying a large serving of tiramisu. "I was sure you'd turn into a bat halfway through the interview and try to run away. Glad to see I was proven wrong."

"This was nerve-wracking in its own way." Xenovia remarked while sipping her juice. "President got the worst of it, but you handled yourself in a manner befitting of a noble. Kiba and Akeno-san's enthusiastic fans were a sight to behold as well."

"That's true, but the highlight was the reaction of Takeshi's young fans and their cheers." Pandora said with a smile. "Doesn't it feel nice to be appreciated and loved instead of receiving unjustified fear and hate for a change, Takeshi?"

"Oh, it sure does, but that will only last as long as they view me from afar." Takeshi said with a bitter smile. "I'm sure they'd change their tune quickly if they spent a couple of minutes in close proximity to me."

"Don't be so sure about that." Rias said. "More importantly, what did they ask you to do in the other studio? What sort of scheme has my mother come up with this time?"

"You're making it sound more sinister than it actually is." Takeshi said. "Also, that's a secret for now. The producers requested that I keep quiet about the upcoming project until the time is right. Fufu, all I can say is that Venelana-sama is far more intelligent than I gave her credit for and a true visionary. Look forward to some exciting announcements in the future, everyone."

"For you to praise my mother like that, it must have been a project that really captivated you." Rias said. "I'll be looking forward to the official reveal, though I have an inkling about its nature and contents."

"Even if you do, my lips are sealed." Takeshi said, making a zipping motion. "I will neither confirm nor deny anything."

"Oh my, I'm pretty sure I could get you to spill everything out." Rias said, a playful smile on her face as she inched closer to Takeshi. "You know I can be very persuasive if I want to, don't you?"

"Hm, this sounds like a challenge, my dear President." Takeshi grinned. "Why don't we put that bold claim of yours to the test tonight?"

"That sounds—"

"It sounds to me like you're a bit too close for what is supposed to be only a master and servant relationship, Rias."

The one who had spoken as he entered the cafeteria was Riser Phenex, with his Queen, Yubelluna, following close behind him.

"Greetings, Riser." Rias said, showing no signs of discomfort or embarrassment at the presence of her former fiancé. "It pleases me to see you are in good health. What brings you here?"

"Have you forgotten, Rias?" Riser said. "The second son of our family, that is to say, my older brother, is a major media mogul. This station belongs to him, which is why I'm here. He required some assistance with today's events, and since I was free, I decided to give him a hand. In hindsight, I should have expected this reunion. I see you've added some unfamiliar faces to your Peerage, while some familiar ones who should be long gone are still around for some reason."

Riser directed a pointed look at Takeshi after saying so, prompting the latter to grin.

"If you were hoping you'd be rid of me that easily, then you must be feeling terribly disappointed right now." Takeshi said. "My apologies, but I intend to stick around for a very long time."

"You had best do so, Evil Dragon User." Riser said. "I will not be satisfied until I have repaid you in full for the defeat you dealt me back then. You might be unaware of this, but I have grown stronger ever since our last meeting."

"Oh, I know." Takeshi said. "I've been watching your matches with great interest. You and your Peerage have improved by leaps and bounds. That small break you took from official Rating Games after our match must have been quite beneficial."

Like Takeshi said, Riser had all but disappeared from the public eye following his defeat at the former's hand and the dissolution of his engagement with Rias. Many had speculated that the scion of the Phenex clan was wallowing in self-pity and shame, only to be surprised when he made his triumphant comeback in the Rating Game stage after a couple of months by winning three matches in a row against moderately skilled Peerages.

Most surprising of all was the growth the Phenex group exhibited. Riser and Ravel had both grown stronger, with the latter's merciless tactics also playing an instrumental part in the group's victories. Yubelluna's firepower had also increased, while the twins Ni and Li would wield ki and use rudimentary Senjutsu techniques against their opponents. Karlamine and Siris' swordsmanship had become more refined, while Isabela and Xuelan had also improved their hand-to-hand combat techniques. Every other member of the Peerage had also exhibited an increase in skill, making the whole group a more formidable enemy compared to the past Phenex group.

This unexpected return and growth had caught game analysts and enthusiasts by surprise, with many expectations being placed on Riser once again and his reputation receiving a major boost. If they had faced the current Phenex group back then, Takeshi wasn't sure they would have been able to win that easily, if they won at all.

"Oh?" Riser raised an eyebrow. "You have been paying attention then?"

"That's a given." Takeshi said. "It's my policy to keep an eye on future rivals and assess their strength. You're definitely becoming a person to watch out for, so there's no way I'll underestimate you if we confront each other again in the future."

"Then you are more intelligent than I gave you credit for." Riser said, looking pleased as he turned to Rias. "You already lost against the Sitri group, so I expect you to triumph against Diodora Astaroth no matter what, Rias. You guys being on a losing streak would make me, who was defeated by you, look like a fool, and I won't stand for that. Not to mention, having that vulgar brat rise even higher would be intolerable for me."

"You sound like you don't have a high opinion of Diodora."

"If the rumors about him are true, then I cannot stand his way of doing things." Riser scowled in response to Rias' words. "If you have to resort to trickery, schemes, manipulation and mind games to make women fall for you, then you are the lowest of the low and a sorry excuse for a man. If there's no love involved, then a harem is meaningless."

"You say that, and yet you wanted to marry President even though it was clear as day she didn't love you." Takeshi pointed out. "Double standards much?"

"That was a different case." Riser said. "Our union was an obligation born of our responsibilities as members of the seventy-two Pillars. Personal feelings should have no bearing there, only the well-being and interests of the Underworld and its nobility. Plus, I am confident Rias would come to love me at some point. However, since you put an end to that, such hypothetical scenarios are meaningless now."

He doesn't seem as pissed off as I thought he would be. Takeshi thought. Unless he's hiding his resentment really well, he's changed in more ways than one.

"Riser-sama, we should be off." Yubelluna said next to him. "We mustn't keep your brother waiting."

"Right you are, Yubelluna." Riser said. "I wish you luck in the upcoming game, Rias. I'll be watching from the VIP seats, so make sure to deliver an entertaining spectacle."

"Thank you, Riser." Rias said. "I promise that our performance won't disappoint you."

"It had better not." Riser said, turning to Takeshi. "Make sure you keep winning from now on, and come to the stage where I'm standing as fast as possible. When you do, I'll show you the true terror of the Rating Games, Ryuugamine Takeshi. It will be my payback, and also my gratitude to you."

"Yes, wait for me." Takeshi said, his gaze filled with fighting spirit. "When the time comes, let's face each other once again with everything we've got in an official game. However, the one who'll win in the end will be me once again."

"There's that irritating confidence I so despise." Riser said with a grin. "Later."

After saying so, Riser took his leave alongside his Queen.

"That guy was President Rias' former fiancé, the one you defeated to free her from her arranged marriage, eh?" Xenovia said. "Somehow, the impression I had of him didn't match his current self."

"It looks like he's done some growing up ever since he lost to us." Rias said. "I'm glad to see he has bounced back and is doing well, although he seems to have marked you as his rival, Takeshi."

"Suits me just fine." Takeshi smirked. "I always welcome strong rivals. After all, a man's greatness can be measured by the quality of his enemies."

"I knew you'd say something like that." Rias smiled as she stood up, with the rest of the Peerage following suit. "Now then, since we've rested enough, how about we head back home? Plenty of work and training are still waiting for us."

[Yes, President!]

Everyone said together as they followed after Rias.

The following evening…

"Ah, that feels good~. Nothing like a nice bath to relax after a round of intensive training."

Takeshi said as he exited the large bath situated on the Ryuugamine residence's first underground floor while sipping some coffee milk, a towel wrapped around his waist. As the day of the game approached, he couldn't help but feel both excited and nervous at the same time. That was why he had chosen to work out on his own despite Rias urging everyone to take it easy in order to be in tip-top shape for their match.

Sitting around was never my strong suit after all. Takeshi thought. Too bad Leon's busy with some emergency summons from the Church and couldn't spar with me. I was looking forward to paying him back for my earlier defeat, but that'll have to wait for after the game.

[Make sure to bleed him dry, whelp!] Grendel said. [Losing to that slug Ddraig's host of all beings in unacceptable!]

Why such hatred towards Ddraig specifically? Takeshi asked. You've lost your fair share of battles in the past, but you don't seem to despise your other opponents as much as you do him. I somewhat understand Orochi's obsession with Albion, but not your vendetta.

[Does there need to be a reason?] Grendel said. [I just hate that bastard's guts, that's all. You could say it's instinct. I want to see him grovel at my feet like the trash he is before I tear his heart from his chest and make him eat it! Then, I'll use his rotten carcass as my personal toilet until the end of time!]

Ugh, that's one more mental image I could do without…

[I'll say.] Nidhogg's voice was heard. [All this talk about corpses is making me hungry. I long for the days where I could feast on the corpses of the fools who came to challenge me for days on end. The banquets in Helheim were also to die for.]

Terrible pun, Nidhogg.

While Takeshi was busy conversing with the Evil Dragons and putting his clothes on, he noticed that someone else was in the training area. Taking a look inside, he saw Xenovia practicing on her own while holding a pair of training swords. Although her moves were crisp and strong as always, there was an air of desperation and impatience around her.

She's still frustrated with herself, eh…? Takeshi thought. However, she's clearly overdoing it. I'm one thing, but she's been increasing the amount of her training the closer we get to the game. It can't go on like this.

Nodding at himself, he approached Xenovia, who stopped swinging her swords after noticing him.

"Takeshi?" Xenovia said. "You're also here? Were you training as well?"

"Yeah, I felt a bit restless, so I thought moving around a bit for a while might help." Takeshi said. "You, on the other hand, have been training quite a lot these days."

"I have to do this much at least." Xenovia said. "There's no way I can get the dual aura coating technique down by the time of the game, so I have to hone my sword technique at least. I don't want a repeat of what happened in the Sitri game. Since you're here, how about we spar for a while?"

"I've got a better idea." Takeshi said. "Change into your casual clothes and come with me. You're in desperate need of some unwinding, and you're getting some whether you want to or not."

"But my training—"

"No talking back to your senior Devil." Takeshi cut off Xenovia with a grin. "Don't make me drag you out of here by force, or worse, make me call Akeno to do it for me. Trust me, you do not want to experience her binding techniques."

"When you put it that way, I can't really refuse." Xenovia said with a resigned expression. "Very well. Give me a few minutes and I'll join you."

"I'll be waiting outside."

After that exchange, Takeshi left the underground floor and made his way to the house's garage, taking out his motorcycle. Once fifteen minutes had passed, Xenovia joined him, wearing a jacket on top of her shirt and jeans.

"Where do you plan on taking me?"

"You'll see." Takeshi said as he climbed on his motorcycle. "This has been long overdue, and I think you'll enjoy yourself."

Once Xenovia had climbed on as well and worn her helmet, Takeshi started his bike, leaving behind the Ryuugamine residence as he headed for the town center. After a short ride, they arrived in front of Kuoh's department store, with Takeshi parking in the garage next to it.

"This must have been your first motorcycle ride, no?" Takeshi asked as the two of them dismounted. "How did it feel?"

"It was a unique experience and feeling." Xenovia said, looking intrigued. "Perhaps I should try riding one of these in the future as well."

"A motorcycle definitely fits your style." Takeshi said. "I'll teach you how to drive one at some point, and maybe you can purchase your own bike in the future. Now, come this way."

Xenovia followed after Takeshi, with the latter bringing her to the department store's roof, where several batting cages were placed side by side.

"This is…?"

"You're familiar with baseball, right?" Takeshi said as he purchased tokens for the two of them. "This batting center lets you practice your swings by hitting balls thrown at you by the pitching machine. Trust me, this is an excellent way to relax and let off some steam."

"I don't know…" Xenovia said with hesitation. "This looks like a waste of time that could be better spent elsewhere."

"Overworking yourself isn't a productive use of your time." Takeshi said. "Work hard, play hard; that's my motto. Just give it a shot. I guarantee you'll be hooked before you know it."

"Alright…"

Xenovia seemed unconvinced, but entered the cage next to Takeshi and began hitting the balls launched at her. Although she looked unmotivated at first, she started becoming more and more enthusiastic with each successful hit, an elated smile appearing on her face.

"That's a good expression you've got there, Xenovia." Takeshi grinned as he batted a slider. "See, I knew you'd come to enjoy yourself."

"I shouldn't have doubted you!" Xenovia said in an enthusiastic manner as she struck an incoming forkball with a lightning-fast swing. "It feels like my worries are melting away!"

"You shouldn't have been worried to begin with." Takeshi said. "I know it doesn't sound very convincing when it comes from me, but a single defeat isn't the end of the world. As long as you can bounce back and win next time, it's all good."

"That may be true, but if I can't bring victory to our group…then what's the point of me being here?" Xenovia said as she sent another ball flying with a powerful swing that almost broke the bat. "Fighting is all I'm good for, and yet I can't seem to be able to improve myself. As a sword wielder, Kiba is far superior to me, and I even have a hard time maintaining a lead over Irina. The possibility that I'll be left behind and become a mere burden…it scares me."

"That's a load of crap." Takeshi said. "You're being way too harsh on yourself, Xenovia. First of all, who said you're only good at fighting? You're on your way to becoming one of the best students in our school thanks to your earnest efforts, and you're the first to volunteer whenever students and teachers need help with something. Everyone has nothing but praise for you. You're also a hard worker when it comes to the Devils' job, which is why you're one of our highest earners."

Takeshi sent another ball flying almost back to the pitching machine before continuing.

"I understand that you feel frustrated about not improving as fast as you want, but the techniques you're trying to master are far from simple." Takeshi said. "Give yourself some time and try not to push yourself to the breaking point. Again, this is probably not very convincing when it comes from me of all people, but that's exactly why you shouldn't imitate my bad habits. You're plenty strong as things stand, and I'm sure you'll become even stronger in the near future."

"You sound much more certain about it than I am." Xenovia said with a self-deprecating smile. "Can you perhaps see the future?"

"No, and I don't need to." Takeshi grinned. "Seeing the capable, talented and hard-working girl before my eyes is all I need. I have faith in your capabilities, Xenovia, and so does everyone else. That's why, be more confident in yourself as well. It's only because a dependable person like you is next to us that we can fight without worries."

Xenovia said nothing in response, focusing on hitting the balls coming at her as Takeshi did the same. Once their turn was done and they left the batting center, she turned to Takeshi and spoke.

"In the future, is it true that you intend to leave President Rias' side and become an independent High-class Devil?"

"Well, it's not like I intend to break off all ties with the group or anything, but I want to reach as high as I can within Devil society." Takeshi said. "Having as much power and authority as I can is the best way to ensure my freedom."

"Does that mean you will aim for the seat of Devil King at some point?"

"Hard to say…" Takeshi said, rubbing his chin. "It's true that the position of Devil King is the highest rank a Devil can attain, but it comes with all sorts of annoying restrictions that don't suit me. For the time being, my focus is on being promoted to an Ultimate-class Devil. Why are you asking though?"

"Once you become a High-class Devil, you will receive your own Evil Pieces and form your own group, right?" Xenovia asked. "When that time comes, I want to come with you."

"You want to become my servant?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow. "How come?"

"I feel standing by your side will let me experience tons of fun things." Xenovia said. "There never seems to be a dull moment when being with you."

"You're quite the fearless woman, eh?" Takeshi said while chuckling. "Why not? We'll have to discuss this with Rias, but if you're fine with me, I would love having you by my side. It will definitely be interesting."

"Thank you, Takeshi." Xenovia said with a wide smile. "Oh, and also…"

Xenovia approached Takeshi and gave him a kiss on the cheek, surprising him.

"A token of my appreciation for today." Xenovia smirked, placing her finger on her lips. "Thanks to you, the unrest inside me has calmed down by a lot, and I feel more confident than before. If you do not feel it's enough though, I could give it to your lips next."

"Tempting, but I'd rather we wait a bit longer for something like that." Takeshi said. "Preferably for the time when both of us are certain that we have feelings for each other, assuming such a future comes to pass."

"Oh, does that mean I'm not that appealing to you?" Xenovia pouted. "That is no good. In that case, I will strive to increase my feminine power from now on as well. Prepare yourself, Takeshi. I will make you fall head over heels for me without fail."

"In that case, I should hone myself further as well to become a man worthy of Xenovia." Takeshi grinned. "Now, let's head back. We might have a game coming up, but the Devils' Job never ends."

"Right."

Xenovia nodded as both of them climbed on Takeshi's motorcycle, driving away from the department store.

Two days later…

"It's almost time…"

Rias remarked as she looked at the antique clock on her desk. The Devil members of the Occult Research Club had gathered in their clubroom, waiting for the start of their match against Diodora. The majority of them wore their student uniforms as usual, with Xenovia wearing her Exorcist battle gear and Takeshi his customized combat uniform. While there was some tension in the room, most of Rias' Peerage was eager to start the fight and bring down Diodora.

"I wonder which rules they'll use this time." Yuuto said. "It could be troublesome if there are special conditions that favor Diodora Astaroth's group."

"…Nothing we can do about it now." Koneko said while munching some chocolate from her usual seat on Takeshi's lap. "Whatever comes our way, we'll deal with it."

"I wonder why Irina, Asia, Dia and Leon aren't here." Xenovia said. "I would have expected them to see us off and wish us luck."

"Apparently, they were summoned to Heaven's VIP area in haste for some reason." Akeno said. "It's a shame we can't see them, but I guess we'll have to settle for receiving their congratulations after we win."

"T-There'll be tons of VIPs from various f-factions watching us, r-right?" Gasper said while shivering. "Uuuuu, the thought of so m-many eyes being on me is making me n-nervous…"

"No need to be." Pandora said while sketching something on her notebook. "This game will be over before you know it."

At that moment, a knock was heard on the door, with Azazel stepping inside in a hurried manner.

"Good, I made it in time." Azazel said. "Takeshi, come with me for a second. There's something I need to give you before the game."

Takeshi frowned at that, but stepped outside with Azazel once Rias nodded at him.

"Here, take this."

Once the two of them were some distance away from the clubroom, Azazel took out a black card-shaped device from his pocket with a golden circuit-like design on it and offered it to Takeshi.

"What's this thing, Sensei?"

"If my calculations are correct, this Malefic Cipher will override Cataclysm Zone's safety protocols and force the awakening of your next Sacred Gear." Azazel said. "It should also mitigate the aftereffects it will have on your body, at least to some degree. You might not require it in the game, but hey, better have it and not need it than need it and not have it, right?"

"I guess…" Takeshi said while scrutinizing the card. "What happens if your calculations aren't correct though?"

"Oh, nothing too serious." Azazel made a dismissive gesture. "The Sacred Gear might shock you, or most of the bones in your body might crack, or maybe your mind could turn to mush from the backlash, or—"

"OK, stop, stop." Takeshi cut off Azazel. "I don't want to hear any more than that. It probably won't be necessary in the end. The current me can take down Diodora with little trouble, Ophis' snake or not."

"Even so, you shouldn't let your guard down." Azazel cautioned the young Pawn. "The situation can always change in ways you don't expect, so it's best to have as many aces up your sleeve as possible."

"Alright, what's going on, Sensei?" Takeshi said, his inquisitive gaze locked on the Fallen Angel Governor. "I always thought there was something you're not telling us about this whole Diodora situation, but the way you're acting right now is making me even more suspicious. Giving me this device, it's like you're expecting things to go south."

"…You'll find out soon enough." Azazel said with evident hesitation. "The game is about to begin, so you and I should be off. Just…be careful in there."

"Oi, wait just a—"

Before Takeshi could question Azazel further, a teleportation magic circle appeared beneath him. The Fallen Angel Governor vanished in a flash of light, leaving Takeshi behind.

"Damn you and your secrecy, Sensei…" Takeshi grumbled as he formed a small magic circle and put the Malefic Cipher inside it. "If whatever scheme you're cooking ends up blowing in our faces, there'll be Hell to pay. Count on it."

Takeshi made his way back to the clubroom in haste, stepping aside just as the members were gathering inside the large magic circle.

"Finally." Rias said. "I was afraid we'd have to leave you behind. What did Azazel want?"

"I'll tell you later." Takeshi said as he joined the others in the magic circle. "Right now, we have a game to win."

"Indeed." Rias nodded. "This time, we'll triumph for sure and punish the scum who dared betray the Underworld and our Devil Kings!"

[Right!]

Everyone shouted together as the magic circle lit up, with its radiance engulfing the Gremory group. Once the light died down, they found themselves standing in the middle of what appeared to be a shrine of Greek design, which however lacked a roof. Before them, a vast field filled with broken pillars and large rock formations spread.

In the distance, a citadel that stood on top of a small hill could be seen. Several smaller shrines surrounded it along with various statues. Unlike the previous games, the sky above them was purple, similar to the Underworld's one.

"They went the extra mile designing this field." Akeno remarked. "I wonder if that has something to do with the game rules this time."

"I guess we'll find out soon enough."

Yuuto said as the Gremory Peerage awaited the arbiter's announcement, which would mark the start of the game. However, despite the fact that almost a full minute had passed after their transfer, no announcements could be heard.

"This is strange…" Rias remarked with a troubled expression. "Has some problem occurred from management's side? Even if that is the case though, we should have been notified…"

"My bad feeling is getting worse and worse…"

Takeshi muttered. At that moment, a magic circle appeared above the group.

"That…isn't the symbol of Astaroth!"

Akeno shouted as lightning surrounded her hands, with everyone else also assuming their battle stances and drawing their respective weapons. Next to that magic circle, a large number of other magic circles materialized, filling up the sky above.

"Those seals…" Rias said with narrowed eyes. "Some of them belong to the Old Devil King Faction, and others are of Greek origin. This means…the Khaos Brigade has hijacked the game."

Everyone present was shocked at that, but didn't have time to say anything more as numerous Devils, armored humans, various Greek mythological monsters that let out ear-splitting howls and Annihilation Maker constructs began emerging from the magic circles, glaring at the Gremory Peerage with obvious hostility. From the aura they were emitting, Takeshi estimated that their power ranged from Middle-class to High-class.

"The relative of the fake Devil King, Rias Gremory." One of the Devils hovering above said with a sneer on his face. "We will have you disappear here as the first blow towards the traitors who overthrew our masters."

"Now, now, let's not be hasty." Memnon, who had emerged from one of the magic circles, said with a wide grin. "I know you are eager for the young heir's blood, but there is a much more fitting executioner."

A shiver went down Takeshi's spine as he felt a surge of killing intent from behind him. Acting on instinct, he pushed Rias out of the way, with a golden sword tearing through his abdomen. Takeshi screamed as the searing heat of the blade set his body aflame, avoiding death only due to the fact that he had already summoned Mayhem Striker.

"You got in the way, you eyesore."

Pandora, the one who had stabbed Takeshi, scowled as she glared at the fallen Pawn. As she called upon her powers once again, the ground around her exploded, sending the stunned Gremory Peerage members flying. Several rock tendrils erupted from around her, restraining her comrades and slamming them on the ground as she spread her wings and flew, joining Memnon.

"Pandora…why!?" Rias cried out as she broke out of the restraints by enveloping her body with Destruction energy and vaporizing them. "Why are you doing this!? You…have you really betrayed us!?"

"Betrayed you?" Pandora spoke with a cold expression. "Don't make me laugh. I was never on your side to begin with. I admit it was fun playing house with all of you happy-go-lucky simpletons, but all good things must come to an end. Unfortunately, there's no place for you in the coming era, so this is farewell forever."

"It's as you say, my dear." Memnon said. "Now, come with me. Our ideal world awaits, and your power is needed to realize it."

"Of course, my lord."

"W-Wait!"

Takeshi called out to Pandora, forcing himself up despite the pain from his still-mending wounds.

"I…won't let it end like this!" Takeshi shouted. "No matter what…I won't let you call our time together a lie! I made a promise to you a while back…and I intend to keep it no matter what!"

"If you somehow manage to get out of this pinch and are stupid enough to come after me, then by all means, do your best to keep it." Pandora said, a mocking smile on her face. "Killing you with my own hands will be an enjoyable experience."

Pandora and Memnon vanished inside the rift, which closed behind them.

"P-Pandora-senpai…why did she do that?" Gasper said, tears gathering in his eyes. "I thought we were f-friends…"

"I'm afraid we have bigger concerns right now."

Xenovia said through gritted teeth as she glared at the enemies surrounding them. Having gathered their power, cruel smiles appeared on their faces as they aimed at the Gremory Peerage, with one of them shouting with evident glee.

"Vanish from this world, filthy heir of the Gremory family!"

A barrage of energy blasts and elemental attacks flew at the Gremory Peerage, who braced themselves for impact. However, before the barrage could reach them, several blazing hieroglyphs appeared before them, with the incoming blasts dispersing and vanishing upon approaching them.

"What happened!?"

"Why did our attacks vanish!?"

"Who did that!? Show yourself!"

As if responding to the last demand, a warm and dazzling light that came from behind the Gremory Peerage enveloped the area, causing everyone's skin to feel like it was sizzling as chills went down their spines. Then, Takeshi noticed the shape of a person standing in the middle of that overflowing radiance that was overwhelming both friend and foe alike. From the aura coming out from them, it was evident that this person was a God.

As they walked closer, their features became clearer. Said person was a tall and burly man with brown skin that wore an ornate shendyt around his waist and a golden ushekh that was draped over his neck and shoulders. Golden bracelets and greaves covered his wrists and legs respectively, and he held a crook and flail in his hands. However, his most eye-catching feature was his head, which was that of a falcon with glowing golden eyes and had a finely woven nemes covering it. Hovering behind his head was a disk comprised of golden flames, which made his appearance even more fearsome.

"It can't be…the Sun God Ra!?" One of the terrorist Devils exclaimed in shock. "Why are you here!? This space should have kept you Gods outside until our preparations were complete!"

"My reason for being here is to punish those who invite chaos and distort the world with their foolish actions." Ra said as he stood in front of the Gremory Peerage. "As for getting past your safeguards to enter this place, I can only say you are looking down on us a bit too much, especially when a Chief God well versed in the intricacies of magic is among us."

After saying so, Ra glanced at Takeshi, prompting the latter to start sweating bullets due to the Sun God's piercing gaze.

"I can sense my old adversary has yet to awaken." Ra said. "Shame. As annoying as he was with his constant attempts to consume, I confess I have missed our bouts during my nightly journey. Perhaps I will get the chance to interact with him in the near future though."

Takeshi couldn't say anything in response, overwhelmed by the Sun God's presence and power.

"We won't let you get in our way, you decaying fossil!" An enemy Devil shouted in outrage. "Blast that rotten God with everything you've got! None who defy the Khaos Brigade may live to tell the tale!"

The assembled terrorists unleashed yet another barrage, aiming for Ra this time. However, the Sun God was unperturbed as he raised his crook, with another array of blazing hieroglyphics appearing before him and causing the attacks to vanish. The members of the Gremory Peerage couldn't help but tremble once again at the sight of these hieroglyphs.

[Kuh, those are the damned symbols for order.] Nidhogg spat out with evident disgust. [That chicken head bastard is using them to neutralize their attacks by reverting the changes magic and demonic power force on the environment. Even from here, my soul can't help but recoil from the power of these accursed hieroglyphs.]

Makes sense. Takeshi thought. Us Devils and you Evil Dragons are creatures of chaos and evil at our base. No wonder we feel so uncomfortable.

"You should have realized by now that such paltry attacks are useless." Ra said. "Since you refuse to stand down, I will have to get a bit more serious."

Pointing his crook at the terrorists, Ra launched a tiny sphere from it. Once it reached the Khaos Brigade members, it rapidly expanded into a miniature sun that vaporized hundreds of terrorists with ease before they could react. Several others weren't so lucky as they fell on the ground screaming, their bodies covered in nasty burns.

"Incredible…" Yuuto muttered. "He used only a small amount of power, and yet he still effortlessly destroyed so many enemies. The strength of a God is on a completely different level…"

"Oi, Ra, you bastard! How dare you start this party without us!?"

The one who had spoken while descending from the sky was Zeus, an annoyed expression on his face. Next to him was Odin, who was riding an eight-legged horse covered in ornate silver armor, and flying behind the two Gods were Irina and the Valkyrie Rossweisse. Upon catching sight of the Gremory group, Irina landed next to them and rushed to their side.

"Yahooo, everyone!" Irina greeted her friends. "Sorry that we couldn't get sooner, but getting past the terrorists' countermeasures was a real pain. Good thing that Odin-sama with his special eye was with us. He analyzed the formation in record time and got us in here in a flash. Isn't that amazing? Ara, where's Pandora-san? I don't see her with you. Don't tell me—"

"Zeus the usurper!" One of the Titan Worshippers shouted with evident hatred, interrupting Irina. "The filth who dared depose the true ruler Cronus and imprison our masters in Tartarus! This is a golden opportunity, everyone! If we take his head, we're guaranteed high positions in the new order!"

The Titan Worshippers cheered together in a frenzied manner, their bloodlust and insanity evident, while most Devils seemed apprehensive after Ra's earlier display. As for Zeus, he chuckled at those words as sparks flew from his eyes.

"Ah, you guys might be crazier than my son Dionysus during one of his drunken outburst, but one's got to love that energy and confidence of yours, unfounded as it is." Zeus said while cracking his neck. "Alright then, little pipsqueaks, if you want to rumble, let's rumble. However, since you're provoking a Sky God, you'd better be ready to deal with the ensuing storm!"

Following these words, Zeus landed in the midst of the terrorists' ranks with a mighty jump and began pummeling them while laughing like a madman. No matter who the opponent was or how sturdy they were, Zeus' thunder-clad fists and kicks would tear through them with ease. The terrorists did their best to counterattack, but Zeus would either evade their attacks or summon raging winds to deflect them.

"Come on, I thought you were after my head!" Zeus bellowed as he summoned a massive twister around him, blowing away the screaming Khaos Brigade members and scattering them over the area. "I expect much more from those who dare challenge me!"

"That buffoon…" Odin grimaced as he formed a barrier around the Gremory group, Irina and Rossweisse to prevent them from being blown away as well. "Has he forgotten that there are allies in his vicinity?"

"Expecting Zeus not to act like a man-child throwing a temper tantrum is like expecting the sun to rise from the west." Ra said with a scowl while watching Zeus use his thunderbolt to call down a barrage of lightning bolts. "The fact that the Greek Pantheon hasn't collapsed into total anarchy yet is a miracle beyond miracles."

"Regardless, he is not to be underestimated." Odin said. "Zeus is frivolous and an unrepentant womanizer, but the fact that he is able to keep all the troublemakers belonging to his Pantheon in check speaks volumes of his strength. Your Pantheon looked down on the Olympians until you received a nasty wake-up call when they defeated you several times in ceremonial combat and Zeus' demigod son annexed Egypt to his empire."

"History would have been written differently if I had not been forced into retirement and pushed aside long before that time." Ra said. "None of that matters now though. Our priority is punishing these terrorists for their transgressions instead of dwelling in the past."

After saying so, Ra brandished his flail, with three fiery whips extending from it. As he swung his flail, the whips tore through the enemy forces, incinerating whoever they struck with ease. Even when the Khaos Brigade members would seemingly dodge the whips, their bodies would still catch on fire due to the sheer amount of heat coming from them.

Evading a desperate charge from several six-armed giants that swung their fists at him, Ra rose in the sky as his eyes shone. The next moment, heat beams erupted from them, scorching everything in his line of sight. The flaming disk behind his head would also launch a rain of plasma bolts at infrequent intervals, tearing through the terrorists' ranks with ease.

"Hm, look at these guys go." Odin smirked. "They must have really been looking forward to unwinding for a bit. Not that I can blame them, since I feel the same way. Even us geezers need to work out every now and then."

Odin then turned to the Gremory Peerage as he spoke.

"Leave this place to the three of us, youngsters." Odin said. "We will clean up these lowlifes in a flash, so lay low and stay safe until then. Rossweisse, keep an eye on them."

"I cannot leave you here on your own, Odin-sama."

"A hatchling who's not even a century old is worried about me?" Odin grinned. "You shouldn't take your Chief God lightly, my dear. I am old, but I am far from needing help to deal with opponents of this caliber. Now, awaken, Gungnir!"

A spearhead emerged from the top of Odin's walking stick following his command, with the entire weapon radiating divine power that made everyone's hair stand on end. Taking a stance, Odin threw the aura-clad spear, creating a sonic boom due to the amount of strength he used. Gungnir sailed through the air, ignoring physical and arcane defenses alike as it tore through the enemy's ranks, raking in kill after kill. By the time it returned to Odin's hand, it had slain hundreds of terrorists.

"This damn God!"

A large number of Titan Worshippers charged at Odin while brandishing their weapons. The one-eyed God smirked as he swung Gungnir, unleashing an energy wave that blew them away. Several magic circles with runes on them emerged around him next, letting out an eerie light.

"What's this!?"

"My body is!"

"Guwhaaaa!"

Chaos ensued as terrorists began collapsing on the ground due to gravity being increased, others caught on fire, some were imprisoned in blocks of ice, a large number of them started convulsing as their skin was peeled off, and several went insane and began attacking their comrades.

As the remaining terrorists around him panicked and tried to escape, Odin tapped the ground below with Gungnir. Numerous cracks spread out from that point, breaking the ground apart and reforming it into a pair of massive jaws that crushed the fleeing Khaos Brigade members. A few of them attempted to attack him from behind, but Odin turned into a flock of ravens and reformed in their midst, sending them flying with a few strikes from his spear.

"This is our chance." Rias said upon noticing that the terrorists' lines had thinned after the three Gods had scattered them and killed a substantial number of them. "Let's leave this place and take shelter in that rock formation over there for now."

"Ah, I almost forgot!" Irina said as she took out several small communication devices while the group ran. "Azazel-sensei asked me to give these to everyone."

After the group had placed the communication devices they received from Irina on their ears, Azazel's voice was heard.

[Hello?] Azazel said. [Are you guys reading me? It's me, Azazel.]

"We hear you loud and clear, Azazel." Rias said as the group took cover in the boulders. "Mind explaining just what the Hell is going on here? Why has the Khaos Brigade attacked our game? Is Diodora connected to this?"

[I understand you guys are upset, but I need you to calm down for a bit and listen to me.] Azazel said. [Like you said, the game field has been hijacked by the Khaos Brigade through the use of Dimension Lost. They've dragged most of the VIPs spectating into this large pseudo space, myself included, with the intent to eliminate us and you guys. We had more or less anticipated their plan beforehand and made the necessary preparations in order to crush them instead and deal a major blow to the Old Devil King Faction and the Titan Worshippers.]

"How were you so certain they would go after us?"

[That's because we found out that the death of the Glasya-Labolas heir was caused by the Khaos Brigade, most likely with Diodora Astaroth's assistance.] Azazel said. [Since they bear a grudge towards anyone connected to the current Devil Kings, we were all but certain that the Old Devil King Faction at least would target you guys.]

"In other words, you used us as bait to draw the terrorists out." Rias said with an icy expression. "And my brother agreed to this?"

[He and the others were reluctant, but I persuaded them to go along with it.] Azazel said. [We also reached out to several Gods, and they all agreed to participate in this plan. This is a golden opportunity to put an end to two major factions within the Khaos Brigade at once, or at least cause grave damage to them, so we couldn't pass it up. I didn't want to expose you to such danger, but there was no other way.]

"What would you have done if we had died before the Gods arrived to assist us?"

[That's simple.] Azazel responded to Rias. [I would take proper responsibility and offer my own life as atonement if need be. Since I'm risking your lives, I need to have at least that much determination.]

"That's nice and all, but we have a more pressing issue here." Takeshi said. "Pandora…she turned on us and tried to kill Rias. She said…that she had been working for the terrorists from the start."

[She turned on you, you say?] Azazel sounded surprised, while Irina let out a shocked gasp. [Could this be connected to the Khaos Brigade's plan…? Either way, we'll get to the bottom of this once we've dealt with the terrorists. You guys should make your way back to the shrine where you were first teleported. There's a sturdy underground shelter there, so you'll be safe until the battle ends.]

"The citadel in the distance, that's where the enemy's headquarters is, right?" Takeshi said. "Then that's where we're going next."

[Oi, oi, don't you understand the current situation?] Azazel said, a hint of anger in his voice. [Right now, this place is a warzone. Khaos Brigade troops and Annihilation Maker constructs are teleporting in by the hundreds, which means that even with the forces available, it will take time before we can mop them up make our way to the citadel. In addition, apart from Pandora, Diodora and his Peerage are in that citadel, along with most, if not all, of the two factions' leaders. I understand how you feel, but heading there on your own is too risky.]

"Even so…I'll go." Takeshi said with a determined expression. "I'm not giving up on Pandora just yet. Even if it means I have to go through Ophis itself, I'm bringing her back no matter what."

"Pandora is a member of my Peerage, and therefore my responsibility." Rias said. "That's why, we'll save her if she needs to be saved, or discipline her if that's necessary. Not to mention, even though the game has been cancelled, we still have to punish Diodora for his treacherous actions. As members of the Three Factions alliance, it's within our right to wield our power against those who seek to undermine us, right?"

[…Seriously, you kids are going to be the death of me.] Azazel said with a sigh. [There's not much I can do to stop you from here either way, so if you feel so strongly about this, go and rampage to your heart's content. I'll do my best to direct some of our allied forces to support you, but don't expect too much. Like I said, it's a mess in here.]

"Thank you for your understanding, Azazel."

[One last thing.] Azazel said. [It's likely that the Khaos Brigade members devised their plan while anticipating that we'd find out about their movements. There's no telling what their ultimate goal is or what sort of adjustments they've made in this pseudo space, so be very careful in there. Good luck, take care of yourselves, and make sure to get back alive.]

"Likewise, Azazel."

Rias said as Azazel signed off, turning to the rest of the Peerage.

"That's how the situation is, everyone." Rias said. "If anyone wishes to turn back, now is the time. I won't hold it against you."

"President, I speak for all of us when I say that wherever you go, we follow." Akeno said with a smile. "Pandora-san is a member of our family until proven otherwise, so we'll do anything in our power to bring her back."

"…What Akeno-san said." Koneko said. "You can count on us, President."

"Thank you, everyone." Rias smiled, turning to Irina and Rossweisse. "You two, this is a matter that involves my Peerage, so there's no need for you to risk your lives. You should head back and take shelter in the underground bunker."

"Ara, what are you saying, Rias-san?" Irina said. "I'm also a member of the Occult Research Club, so it's a given I will lend you my strength here. Plus, as Michael-sama's Ace, it's my duty to strike down evil wherever it rears its ugly head!"

"Odin-sama asked me to keep an eye on you, and I don't intend to disobey his command." Rossweisse said. "That's why, allow me to assist you as well. I promise that I won't slow you down."

"The more, the merrier." Rias smiled. "Now, let's go, everyone!"

[Yes!]

Everybody shouted together as one in response to Rias' words.

"Wait for me, Pandora…"

Takeshi muttered as the group began running towards the citadel.

This concludes Chapter 48. First, in response to your questions.

To yliaster: Leon's 'callsign' is Sword Saint (from Sword Saint Bilgenia). I believe it's fitting since he fights with a sword and shield just like Bilgenia.

To Appolyon: Yes, when it comes to Ajuka, Kankara Formula is a personal technique, but my headcanon in this story is that a mutation is partially responsible for its development along with his love of calculations. Regarding Falbium's ability, I'm also leaning towards Absolute Defense and Offensive Position being exclusive to him. For the purposes of this story though, Absolute Defense will remain as the Glasya-Labolas' clan trait.

I found an English translation of the Portuguese translation of DxD Zero. It's not high quality, but it's good enough. Problem is, I don't remember where I downloaded it from. Perhaps you could google it?

Regarding the ash and water thing, I recall reading somewhere that ash hardens when exposed to water, thus making it less malleable. If that's nonsense though, perhaps I'll go back and edit that chapter, or maybe chalk it up to Takeshi's mistaken belief at the time.

Ddraig views Fallen Angels and Devils as inferior because he doesn't have a high opinion of them on the individual level, especially when compared to Deus Trinity. He'd change his tune somewhat if he saw firsthand what Sirzechs and Ajuka are capable of.

When unlocked properly, Cataclysm Zone's final BB exceeds the level of DxD G and L due to combining the power of all seven Evil Dragons. The issue is power instability due to the difficulty of keeping all these rampant auras synchronized. In its fully synchronized state, the final BB can reach the Dragon Gods, but such power will be reserved for the late game.

Vali's wand is based on the one Scáthach-Skadi from Fate GO uses. As for the image, perhaps putting https colon / / instead of s:/ will show it.

Thanks for bringing these two points in Chapter 37 to my attention. I've made some slight edits since it's still early for Xenovia to use the coating technique with any degree of success, and I didn't intend to imply that magic, dragon aura and holy power are the same.

Damian's hair is brown. To be more precise, his appearance is based on Acqua of the Back from the Index series.

We had some training scenes and some bonding scenes, but more importantly, this arc's climax finally begins with Pandora's betrayal. Various battles against the Khaos Brigade's agents will begin in the next chapter, so look forward to it.

Well, that's all for now. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
