Cori looked up almost instantly from her book, at the sound of the front door opening, to see Seth and the girls returning with Asami.
"Everything okay?"
"Yeah." Sam sighed, kneeling down to let Asami off her leash, half smiling as she watched her run over to greet Cori. "Vet didn't seem to think there was anything to worry about, so she should be fine."
"That's good….what about you, though? Are you going to tell me what happend? Do they have any leads?"
Sam just shrugged and led Asami toward the kitchen area to go refill her food bowl.
"Well...yes and no." Kinsey answered for her. "Seth did get a chance to talk to one of the cops again, but it was just a lot of what we already heard when they were here."
"Only, except for the part where there was, and I quote, no sign of forced entry, meaning that it was either someone who had access to the place or Seth left the door unlocked….again." She shot a glare at him
"Okay, first of all, that happened two times- "
"Which is two times too many when you've got people thinking you were involved with Nat and Leslie and you're living with the daughter of, not one, but two- "
She stopped midsentence when Kinsey shot her a look that reminded her that Cori was still, not only within earshot, but actively in the conversation, and to tread a little more lightly with what she was going on to say.
"...two survivors of the original Woodsboro killings that assholes just love to theorize about.." She said instead. "Assholes, who would just love to get their hands on one of us!"
"Sam, the door was locked, okay? I swear." Seth insisted. "...plus, I wasn't even here, and I don't think Cori was either."
"...and, I was the last one to leave and lock it when I left to take Asami for her walk.." Kinsey added.
"Thank you!" Seth sighed in apparent relief. "..although, with all due respect, you could've started with that."
"..well, with all due respect.." Kinsey mocked. "...I just got stabbed tonight, so did my girlfriend's dog! Forgive me if I was second guessing myself."
Sam put her arm around her, gently stroking her hand across her back
"I did though.." Kinsey reaffirmed.
"I know." Sam reassured her. "I know, I believe you."
Kinsey nodded, leaning in closer to Sam, who held her a little tighter when she did.
"What about Colton?" Seth eventually asked, breaking the near silence that came over the group.
Sam was the first to look up, followed by Cori who looked considerably more suspicious now at what he was about to say.
"What about him?" Kinsey asked.
"I mean….where was he when Kinsey and Asami were attacked?" He explained.
"It wasn't him." Sam answered, almost immediately. "I went to his apartment straight after work to talk to him about his little ideas about Seth on his last podcast-."
"Oh, is that what we're calling that now?" Cori scoffed. "You're lucky he's not the one who called the police."
Sam shot her a glare now" Excuse me?"
"Oh, he didn't tell you? Yeah, I guess some neighbor overheard you two when you were throwing him up against the damn wall! You're lucky he didn't press charges."
"Well, he's lucky. I didn't smash his goddamned face into it!"
Kinsey pulled her back from lunging.
"The point is…" She sighed. "..we know Colton was either still at or just leaving his apartment when we were attacked.
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean he wasn't involved." Seth pointed out.
Everyone looked to him now.
"Well, think about it…" He explained. "...Nat and Leslie killed together, just like every other copycat that's thought Sam's dads were the ones responsible for the original killings in '96 had an accomplice."
This was what really got Sam's attention.
"So, you're saying that Colton sent someone else after Kinsey?"
"Jesus Christ, you guys!" Cori blurted out. "Alright, I'm willing to admit I probably overreacted and he probably earned it, but he is not a killer!"
"Ah!" Seth interrupted with a smirk that appeared to be just a little too proud. "...I never called him a killer, I only said he sent someone over here to attack Kinsey."
"Right." Cori scoffed. "..and Charles Manson wasn't responsible for any of the killings his followers did."
Kinsey sighed at what she could already see this turning into.
"You guys- "
"No, no. Seth was onto something there." Sam pointed out. "...I mean you can't say that it's not even the least bit suspicious that you and Asami get attacked right after I would've gotten into it with Colton…"
Seth pointed toward her in agreement. "Exactly, and not to mention, what better story for his podcast than the alleged killers' daughter's girlfriend getting attacked?"
Sam stopped him right there.
"Okay, A: I don't like how eagerly you said that. B: You are on the right track still. Cor, what'd you say the name of that girl that does his podcast with him was?"
Cori shot her a glare.
"...You don't get to call me Cor when you're accusing my brother of being a fucking murderer." She waved her hands in front of her in exasperation, as she stormed off. "Or whatever you want to call him! I'll be in my room."
"Who's stoppin ya?" Seth chuckled, watching her leave.
Sam sighed, also watching her until she disappeared into her room, before she looked back to Seth and Kinsey.
"...Alright, it's too quiet now. Someone tell me I'm not crazy or paranoid."
"...I mean, you knew Nat for what? Four years?" Seth reminded her. "...I knew her...and Dani for like six, and her and Colton for three. If anything, I think you might've underreacted. Matter of fact, I'd keep an eye on your little friend down the hall too. I mean, who's to say that whoever it was didn't pick the lock to get in?"
"Mandy?" Kinsey asked.
"Why not?" Seth shrugged. "It also just a little too conveniently happened right after her friend comes to snitch on what Colton's been saying about me on his podcast.
"So, Jax comes to bring me my phone and warn me about Colton, Mandy finds out he did that and that I confronted Colton, but only targets me….and Kinsey, but not the messenger?"
"Maybe. I mean, we've known her for even less time, and come on!" He scoffed. "...who actually hits it off with Colton and doesn't at least wanna punch him."
"I don't know…." Sam sighed. "...as much as I agree with your last point, and I do….it just feels a little too obvious. I mean, she listens to true crime podcasts, for God's sake, if she was behind any of this, she'd hide it a little bit better than that…...or...I don't know, maybe I just don't want to suspect her."
Kinsey just quietly looked over at her, sympathetically, and even Seth got real quiet when she said that…
Until he eventually had his next, brilliant idea.
He snapped his fingers, suddenly breaking the previous silence.
"I say we phone in some experts! Sam, what're your dad's phone numbers?!"
This time, it was Kinsey who shot him a glare.
"Seth!"
"Wh- it's been done before!" He tried to defend.
"By who?! Jodie Foster?!" Kinsey retorted.
"Which was inspired by actual events!"
Kinsey shot him a very you've gotta be fucking kidding me kind of look, which gave Sam a half genuine chuckle
"He's actually not completely wrong." She defended, begrudgingly. "Specifically, it was Ted Bundy being asked to give tips that might lead to the capture of Gary Ridgeway, The Green River killer that inspired that bit of it…..and to clarify, it was certain characters and events that were loosely inspired by fragments of actual events."
"Alright, whatever." Seth chuckled. "You know what I meant."
"And either way, it's not happening!" Her voice lowered to a near whisper "Alright? I'm not asking my fathers about how they were thinking when they were murdering people!"
"Why do you think I asked?" He chuckled.
She just shook her head to herself and started towards hers' and Kinsey's room.
"Good night, Seth."
"What?!' He chuckled.
Kinsey just shook her head and smacked him on her way to follow Sam.
"Asshole."
"Ow!" He chuckled again. "What? It was a reasonable suggestion."
When Kinsey arrived at the bedroom door, she knocked softly against it before cracking it open to enter and find Sam, laying on the bed with Asami sprawled across her lap.
Asami perked up and gave a little tail wag when she saw her.
Kinsey smiled at her, then looked up at Sam as she crossed the bedroom to sit down by her side
"Ignore him." She sighed. "Seriously, it's just his way of coping with it all."
"Believe me, I do, it's just- " Sam sighed.
"I know." She reached her hand over to where Sam's was. "I know, you're just thinking that's how everybody sees you.'
"It's because they do." Sam scoffed. "Every one of them, even if they won't admit it. It's why Cori overreacted to my run in with Colton."
"Even if she's not a the- "" Kinsey stopped herself mid sentence. "Well, I guess theorist isn't really accurate anymore, knowing what we know, but… you get what I mean."
"Well, we didn't think Nat knew either, now did we?"
"Is that what this is really about?" She reached up to gently stroke Sam's shoulder now.
Sam sighed. "I knew her for four years...FOUR years, I mean, I know that it's not that long to know something, it's just…"
"Just?"
Sam sighed again. "It's just that Nat never showed that she saw me that way." She shook her head. "...or maybe I was just stupid to think she was the only one who didn't. I don't know."
"...do you think that I ever saw you that way?"
Sam looked at her.
"Because….for the record, I….didn't."
"Bullshit."
"No…" Kinsey insisted. "Bullshit is what I thought when the prettiest girl I'd ever seen smiled back at me in Homeroom. Bullshit is what I thought when that pretty girl, who is more horror obsessed than I will ever be decided to humor me when I embarrassed myself by asking her out when she was and still is so entirely out of my league…"
Sam's, now genuine, smile grew even wider.
"I never saw a serial killer's daughter, Sam. Okay, nor did I even see someone to pity or- or anything else you think people see you as." Kinsey continued. "...I saw you."
"...okay, but for the record…" Sam said quietly, reaching for her buck knife. "...I may be more than just my fathers' daughter, but I would still like to have a little chat with whoever told you that anyone was out of your league."
"I'll see what I can do." Kinsey laughed, leaning in to kiss her.
Sam pulled her in even closer, as they kissed. "You better."
