14th October
"You're running this morning, come on," Maura told the brunette who was eating pancakes in the police cafe.
"Too late, I've already showered," Jane answered and took a bite of her pancakes. Maura smelled her hair.
"Last night or this morning? Let's go!"
"No I can't, ehm my stomach is full," Jane really tried to slipping away.
"Please don't use "my stomach is full" on a pregnant woman. You need endorphins from physical activity. Because you're depressed," the blonde doctor whispered to her friend.
"I'm not depressed. See?" Jane gave Maura a fake smile.
"You'll get over Casey."
"Oh, we got a murderer. You gonna run to the crime scene?" Jane interrupted, for once grateful that someone was dead.
"Five minutes," Maura answered and put her cup of ginger ale tea away.
"Three."
"Oh, she's looking like some big, weird doll," Jane shouted when she saw the body.
"Dame the voyage."
"Why are we speaking French?"
"Sex dolls was invented in the sevente..." a sharp pain in her stomach made Maura put one hand on the bench to study herself, and the other one rubbed her belly. She closed her eyes and tried to take a deep breath, but the pain was too intense.
"Maura what's wrong?" Jane whispered and put a hand on the shorter woman's back.
"Cramps." Maura answered, her eyes still closed. Jane continued to rub her back.
"Dr. Isles are you alright?" Frost tried to ask in the same time he shoved pancakes.
"Yeah yeah, she's alright. Just girl problems you know." Jane answered and waved her hand to make the younger detective go away. "Should I take you to a hospital?" she asked Maura with a concerned frown.
"No...no, it's okay. It's completely normal, my uterus is growing and it's just like a muscle fever," Maura lol calmed her friend and got back to examine the body.
"Okay but promise you'll tell me if you think something is wrong." Maura didn't answer that so Jane figured she was okay and got back to nag on her to make get the cause of death.
"Definitely a solid high density object, common parlance: something hard," Maura told. She seemed fine by now but Jane was still pretty worried about her.
"That's a brilliant deduction."
"Her wrists were bound to something."
"There is no blood spatter. She wasn't killed here. Well..nice scrunchie." Jane took a sip of her coffee.
"Her clothes are very early 90s too. More formal, before..." Mauras stomach started to roll.
"Hm?"
"Jane, your coffee is making me really nauseous," she whispered in the brunettes ear.
"Sorry Maura," she whispered back and put her coffee away.
"This is too easy. It is all here. Drivers license, bus pass, money, phone," Frost told the two ladies as he looked through the suitcase. He handled his partner the ID.
"Victoria Green. She was 25. She lived in Brighton."
"Okay, not so easy. She password protected her phone," Barry continued. He held up a bloody shirt.
"Okay so she was probably killed wearing that.."
"..and the killer redressed her in those clothes.."
"..and post her on a bus bench," Jane and Frost stated. "So we're not just looking just any old killer. We're looking for a freak with a doll fetisch."
"There are remains of a subdural hematoma right here."
"So she was knocked out, but with what? And don't say something hard."
"It was hard. But the extent of the damage makes it impossible to determine what type of instrument that was used," Maura answered with a deep breath.
"You sure you're feeling alright?" Jane asked over the dead body. Maybe it was just the pregnancy, but she could tell something wasn't right with her best friend.
"Yes," the ME answered, though she felt a little sore. But she didn't want her friend to worry. It was probably nothing.
"Just let me know if you need anything." Maura nodded in response and Jane walked against the door. "Maur, I really don't want you to happen to you or the baby."
"Me neither, Jane"." Her eyes were filled with tears, "damn hormones." The brunette laughed and closed the door behind her. She took a few deep breaths too calm herself before she pressed the scalpel against the victims skin. But something interrupted her.
"Psst." A voice came from the loading dock and Korsak peeked in.
"Sergeant Korsak, hi! How much of that did you hear?" Maura asked, a little uncomfortable with the knowledge that this was the time for her secret to become a non-secret.
"Don't worry Doc, my lips are sailed. But I guess a congratulation is in it's order! How far along are you?" The old man smirked.
"Thank you!" Maura put a hand on her barely there baby bump. "I'm 8 weeks on Thursday." Korsak smiled at her. "So what can I do for you?"
"I was wondering if.. if you can give a friend of mine a little checkup?"
"Here? There's no such thing as a little checkup. I'd have too..." She cut the sentence as she looked up from the corpse and saw a dog show up behind Korsak. "Oh...well hello."
"Look what I found," Susie said as she walked into her bosses office."
"A RDIF-scanner, thanks Susie!" Maura answered. "If Barney Miller is chipped, this will tell us who she belongs to," the ME said as she placed the scanner next to the dogs neck.
Beep*
"She's registered at Truce Veteran Center. Are you a service dog Barney?" Maura shouted.
"That's why you know all the tricks," Vince told the dog. "I guess a wounded soldier need you more than I do." Barney gave him a wet kiss.
"Why don't I take Barney Miller home, and spare you that." the younger woman asked and knelt down forward them. Maura definitely fought back her tears right know, "damn these hormones" she thought.
"Would you? I don't think I can do it," he said and gave Maura a thankful look. "Goodbye girl." Barney Miller got a last hug from the detective.
Later that night at Maura's house
"Hey! Come see what detective Frost set up for me," Angela told Maura who was entering the kitchen. "Now all my customers can order online!"
"Wow this is great!" she answered, scrolling through the side. But the older woman interrupted her.
"I'm worried about Jane. It's as bad as when Andrew Spagnola broke her heart at the Shining Star prom!"
Maura didn't answer, instead she turned around to get her Grays Anatomy. "You have to swear that you never mention to Jane what I'm about to tell you."
Angela smiled and said "that's a Grays Anatomy."
"Swear Angela!" the blonde said and and put her best friends mothers hand on the book.
"I swear, my lips are sailed."
"I went to see Casey."
"Oh."
"He's partly paralysed. He doesn't want Jane to know."
"Partly paralysed? Does that mean he can't have children? You know I want grand children and Jane is crazy for him."
"There is a small chance that he may regain the function some day, but.. but he's pretty resolute. He doesn't want to see her."
"Then he's a fool. I could tell she really liked him," Angela said, Maura was quiet for a second before she spoke.
"I think she loves him," she answered with a sad look. She'd seen the way she looked at him. There is no doubt she loves him. The two women kept look at each other, nobody said a word. Maura, once again, felt a pain in her lower abdomen that made her gasp, and break the silence. Angela looked up at her with a questioning frown. The doctor smiled, reminded of the baby that was growing inside of her. "Okay Angela, I'm gonna tell you another thing. But you have to promise that you won't tell anyone."
"No, I don't wanna her more secrets or keep anything more from my daughter, it just gives me anxiety." All this Casey stuff were enough for her.
"It's a good secret, I promise. And you can tell Jane, she already knows," Maura chuckled. Her heart started to beat faster, she wasn't sure how Angela was going to react to the news. But she had to tell her sometime. "Listen, I know I'm not your real daughter, and that this," she pointed at her belly "won't be your real grandchild. But at least it's something." Maura said and gave the older woman an uncertain smile. It took some time before she solved it out, but when she did a big grin showed up at her face. Angela stood up and embraced the younger woman. "Please be careful, my boobs is a little sore."
"Oh, I'm sorry, remember that one," she broke the hug, "but pregnant? Are you kidding me? I knew you and that handsome guy wasn't just co-workers. Because it is his, right? This is crazy. How far along are you? How are you feeling? Morning sickness? Hormones? Oh my God congratulations sweetheart, I'm so happy for you.
Maura giggled and sat down, all the questions was a little too much. She took a deep breath, the feeling of missing someone flew through her body as she thought of Ian again. "Yes, it is Ian's, and no we're not just co-workers. Sorry for not telling you. I'm 8 weeks on Thursday. I'm feeling quite good, a little cramps but no big changes, just that I'm more fatigued than I'm used to and my hormones is kind of all over the place. No real morning sickness yet, though Jane's morning coffee made my stomach roll on the crime scene."
"Oh darling, yeah I remember those God damn hormones. I wish I could tell you it passes. I'll buy home some ginger ale tea, and salted crackers, it's good for the nausea. And I will bring some to the police cafe too, don't believe morning sickness is stuck to the mornings. This is so exciting!" Angela took her daughters best friends hands in her own, "you're gonna be a great mom, I promise."
"Thank you Angela, for it all. I'm pretty excited too, I mean it's still overwhelming," she stroke a hand over her stomach, "but, you know, I'm feeling comfortable with it," Maura smiled.
