Chapter 37: Piercing Red Eye

Shadow watched Hikari dart out of a small hole in a large rock in the forest, he had lost track of them for a while, but he had found them once more.

The small electric rodent had stopped and Shadow could hear him softly sobbing.

"I'm sorry Blade. I-I never meant for this to happen."

"You may not have intended it Hikari. But that doesn't mean it didn't happen…" Shadow said, cold menace clear in his voice.

"What was that!"

Shadow watched as the fear entered Hikari.

"Pika," he said cautiously. When no one replied he mumbled to himself, "must be the wind."

He turned and begun to walk back in the direction he'd come.

"You betrayed Blade." Shadow spoke again, attempting to push the Pikachu's mind to the brink of breaking.

"It's just the wind," he told himself as he continued moving. "It's just the wind."

"Traitor."

"It's just the wind."

"It's your fault!"

"It's just the…Oh." He began to panic. "Err…Where am I."

Hikari was lost, and that began quickly setting in.

"You killed Blade!" Shadow's eye began to glow a deep vicious red.

Then he saw it. A dark red eye staring at him from amongst the trees.

"Pika. PIKAAA!"

Hikari ran off, sprinting in the opposite direction from the eye, trying to put as much distance between himself and it as possible. But every time he glanced over his shoulder, it always seemed to be the same distance behind him. Shadow maintained a constant distance from the electric mouse.

"Traitor…Murder…Blade deserved better than you…" Shadow continued to terrorize the small chu.

Hikari was running as fast as he could. Yet Shadow remained behind him.

"Die…Die…You deserved to die…" once he was satisfied with his psychological torture, Shadow would go for the kill, but he was enjoying the fear pouring from the small mouse pokemon.

Faster…Faster…Faster…

"Hikari….You deserve to die…"

"No. No. Leave me alone!"

Thud!

Not looking where he was going, Hikari ran headlong into a large rock. "Pika." With a great deal of effort, he flipped himself around. And through his watering eyes, he saw the red eye staring at him through the trees.

"No."

He scrambled backwards until his back touched the rock. Shadow stared at him.

"WHAT DO YOU WANT!" Hikari called out desperately.

There was no reply.

"Why won't you leave me alone!"

And then the world around him turned black…

Hikari found himself floating in a void of empty darkness.

"Where. Where am I!" But he knew where he was…In the world of his nightmares. And then from out of the blackness emerged a creature. Hikari wasn't sure whether it was a Pokémon or a machine…Or something else entirely.

It had the appearance of a Latios, but a very distorted one at that. Shaped like a Tear Drop, with triangular wings and a tail fin at its rear and a narrow cylindrical body and neck ending in a pointed nose.

The creature had a single red eye, like a rectangle stretching across its face. It opened its mouth to reveal a set of sharp teeth, larger than Hikari's whole body. And resting between those teeth, the skeletal corpse of…

The pitch black pokemon reveled in the suffering, though he himself could still feel his own pain at seeing it.

"Blade…No. NO!"

Hikari tried to run away. But he couldn't seem to move in this space. He flapped his arms desperately like a bird as if to fly. But it didn't work. He just continued to hang there, motionless in this empty place.

Shadow looked away as the creature closed its mouth. One of its incisors punctured Blade's neck, severing his head from his body. To the Pikachu's horror, the head of the Sneasel floated through the air…Or whatever it was…towards him.

Hikari involuntarily stretched out his arms to catch it…And to his horror found himself looking into the sunken lifeless eyes of his friend.

"You…Killed me Hikari."

He wanted to scream but he couldn't find his voice. Blade, despite being little more than a head, was speaking to him. His voice was cold and hollow.

Worse he was staring at him. Those dead sunken eyes were burring into Hikari's very soul.

"You killed me…You were my friend and you let this happen to me…How could you."

"No Blade I."

He wanted to throw Blade away. Send it in to the dark void. Away from him.

Shadow watched on.

Horribly, the nightmare Blade seemed to be able to read his mind.

"You can't just throw me away Hikari. You can't just make your problems disappeared. You did this to me. And now you just want to turn your back on my suffering. I thought you were my friend."

"I-I am. I just."

"Some friend you are. You deserve to DIE!"

Flames ignited from the rear of the winged creature, bathing the void in bright white light.

"Noooooooo!"

The darkness fell away as Shadow heard the sound of humans approaching. And the Darkrai vanished leaving the Pikachu alone.
