Chapter 34
"Shall we begin then?" Harry asked, subtly resisting his boyfriend's attempt to shift onto the cushion beside him and off his lap.
Draco blushed but otherwise gave no indication that he was uncomfortable.
Lucius looked unhappy but held his tongue so as to keep from embarrassing all of them.
"How did it go at the bank?" Harry asked.
"Great! Well, you've already seen my bracelet, but we also retrieved the cup for Uncle Tom and it's in my room." Draco told them. "After that is when I met the dragon and revealed myself to the goblins as the Dragonlord."
Lucius nodded once; satisfaction radiated from his smug grin.
"Director Tukron met me at a vault I'd never seen before - one Merlin himself set aside for the next Dragonlord. It was incredibly deep." Draco went on. "Inside, there's all sorts of interesting things."
"Draco, don't exaggerate." Narcissa shook her head. "It looked like a perfectly normal vault except there didn't seem to be much money."
Lucius wasn't worried. "Merlin probably believed that the Dragonlord would be supported by the main family bloodline... and of course he was correct."
"That makes sense. Anyway, there were lots of books and artefacts." Draco nodded before looking at Harry. "There was also a chest full of things that signal to the dragons that a person belongs to the Dragonlord. Mother?"
Narcissa showed Lucius her new necklace.
"Lovely." Lucius murmured as he appraised it and the beautiful neck it was gracing.
"There is something in Mum's bag for you as well, Father, and I had a strange feeling when I picked up one particular piece." Draco told him before looking at Harry. "I don't know how but I just knew it was yours. It's upstairs. I'll give it to you when we're done meeting with everyone."
Harry nodded happily, returning his attention to Draco's parents, Lucius was wearing a dragon head pin with eyes that glittered like the egg in his mother's pendant, making it look dangerous.
"So anyway, the dragon I met - her name is Opal." Draco told them. "She's very old - almost old enough to retire - and now she's guarding the Dragonlord's vault. You'll all get to meet her sometime I'm sure... along with my new account manager - the director's son!"
"I'll look forward to it." Harry sighed happily.
"Now, I want to know what you got up to while I was gone." Draco said, anticipation radiating from his body.
"Well, Luna looked up Umbrage's genealogy while I helped Xeno sift through the newspapers." Harry replied. "We only found references to 'an incident in a Parisian cemetery', so Xeno decided to go to the source. He took Luna to the Prophet archives."
"I remembered hearing the name of that cemetery because many famous people are buried there - muggle and magical alike." Lucius told them.
"Ah, Death..." Harry frowned. "The great equaliser."
"Like who?" Draco asked, glaring at Harry for being morbid as Snape and Tom walked in. "Any names I'd recognize?"
"Good - you're already talking about the cemetery." Snape commented. "For one thing, Glover Hipworth is buried there."
"No way?!" Draco exclaimed. "The inventor of Pepper-up?"
"Along with several muggle musicians and a prime minister or two." Lucius glared at his old friend who was smugly smirking in pride that his godson had remembered this obscure fact. "In fact, several ministers for Magic are also among the residents."
"Are any of them Malfoys?" Harry smirked.
"The Malfoy mausoleum isn't in that particular cemetery, though, like several other pureblood families, we do have a branch in France." Lucius sniffed as if he smelled something unpleasant.
"Like the Lestranges." Draco contributed with a light frown. "It was mentioned when we visited Aunt Bella's vault. They died off in 1927. Speaking of the vault visit, Uncle Tom, the Hufflepuff cup is in my room."
"Thank you, Draco." Tom nodded formally.
"We found it!" Xeno burst into the room, breathlessly. "The 'incident' was uncovered pretty quickly but nothing made sense until we found Umbrage's aunt on the family tree!"
"She's a great aunt, first of all." Luna told them. "She died in 1927, when she was only a teenager."
"1927?" Harry murmured to himself, noticing that Draco had turned to stare at her.
Xeno interjected. "That's well before she could be married to the man her parents had arranged for her. The family went into debt for years to pay him off."
"But anyway," Luna rushed on. "Her name was Alfrun Rose Selwyn." (see endnote)
"Hmm... Edgar Umbrage is among my more vicious supporters. The Selwyn name is two generations back from him, I believe." Tom frowned deeply. "I don't recall him or his father mentioning a vendetta against your family... How interesting."
"It may be that the vendetta is against someone other than the Potters." Luna told them. "There were quite a few people involved in the incident which killed her."
Xeno showed them a list of the combatants and pointed out a few specific names. "You might know this person's cousin. He's a Ravenclaw in your year."
"Goldstein? Anthony is just an acquaintance though." Harry said, shaking his head. "He couldn't even be caught in the crossfire unless I or one of my family members or close friends were attacked in his vicinity. Additionally, he's friends with people we know are bullies, so he wouldn't necessarily benefit from my wholehearted protection."
"Bullies?" Narcissa frowned.
"He's Zack's friend." Draco pointed out nodding tightly to his mother.
"I've really only seen them associate in classes, Draco. Besides, he shares a room with Davies and Corner." Harry reasoned. "Just because he didn't participate doesn't mean he didn't know it was happening."
Draco shrugged but nodded in agreement. "I suppose."
"What is the incident that killed her?" Harry wondered.
"A rally was held in the cemetery." Xeno told them grimly. "She attended and it turned violent when aurors showed up. According to the account I found, she drew her wand and was killed by an auror."
"A rally?" Harry muttered, frowning. "What kind of rally?"
"A Grindelwald rally." Tom uttered softly, causing everyone's eyes to turn and look at him. "What - it only makes sense. I know that much magical history. I was born about a year before this rally and I remember learning in school that Grindelwald was gathering power at that time."
"How did the French Lestrange branch die out?" Harry asked suspiciously, realising that it was an awfully big coincidence that both had died the same year.
"I'm not sure." Draco shrugged.
"I know." Luna commented softly, holding out a copy of a newspaper that detailed who fought and who lived or died at that very rally.
"I need Sirius or Remus here." Harry said, quietly intense as something clicked in his mind.
Draco recognized the look in his boyfriend's green eyes. The young elemental wizard knew something. He called his elf and sent her to fetch Harry's godfathers.
"While we wait, why don't you tell us why you've called them." Tom asked innocently.
"There were rumours when Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald..." Harry glared at his cousin. "You know all about them because you told me to look into it!"
"Ah, yes! Good." Tom smiled widely. "You never mentioned them so I wasn't sure you did."
Sirius came rushing in, then. "What's going on, pup?"
Harry glared at the older man. "I asked you not to use that name for me in company!"
"Sorry." He shrugged. "I forgot. What do you need?"
Harry quickly filled him in with what they'd figured out. "So please tell me if I'm interpreting this wrong - the last French Lestrange - this Leta - and Umbrage's great aunt were killed in the same incident which occurred when they attended a Grindelwald rally."
Draco nodded. "That seems to be the case."
"The British Lestrange branch didn't care to avenge their relative but the Selwyn family declared a vendetta against someone and Umbrage is the one it's fallen on to do the deed... so it seems to me that maybe the French Lestrange was going against what the British branch would have wanted." Harry hypothesised. "You said that the aurors arrived and that's when the rally turned violent?"
Xeno double checked the record in his hand and nodded.
"What if..." Harry glanced at Tom but settled his gaze on Sirius. "What if Lestrange was on the aurors' side of the conflict and Selwyn was a Grindelwald supporter?"
Sirius' eyes widened. "Are you suggesting what I think you're suggesting?"
Harry nodded. "The articles Remus brought us from the ministry weren't rumours at all - they were true but nobody believed them!"
Sirius rushed off to tell Remus, leaving Harry to explain.
"I don't know how it connects yet because there's a gap between this rally and the year Dumbledore was supposed to have defeated Grindelwald but, I'm pretty sure..." Harry set his teeth. "Albus Dumbledore didn't win that fateful duel in 1945."
Tom looked satisfied but everyone else was staring at him.
"So you're saying... you think that Gellert Grindelwald won and he or one of his supporters switched places with the real Dumbledore?" Draco asked carefully.
"It seems impossible but think about it." Harry replied. "That duel was supposedly quite personal between them... maybe there was something else to it all."
Sirius burst back into the room with Remus right behind him. "We have more information for this discussion!"
Remus produced a portrait of Phineas Nigellus Black. "Headmaster Black died the year before the rally you were talking about but he knows a lot about what went on with the notable people in society at the time."
"Really, sir?" Harry asked. "Do you know anything that might help?"
"Well, now, young man..." The portrait eyed him. "Beyond what I observed of Dumbledore while he was a student, I watched him run the school for years!"
"Siri, would you please put Mr. Black's portrait with the items we're bringing to Hearthstone? We'll talk to him about this matter over the holiday week." Harry told him, thanking the portrait. Then he spoke to the others in the room. "I have to think of what to ask and how to use this information but I'll let you know what comes of it."
"Very well, I want to hear about Slughorn's party anyway." Tom smirked as Harry's uncles left to do other things. "What happened?"
"Well, he appears to have begun the process of collecting students that you described to Draco, but otherwise it was a pretty normal party." Harry shrugged and turned to Draco.
"Oh, Harry, you're so naive." The young Dragonlord smirked fondly at his betrothed. "I saw a lot more than that, Uncle. For instance, the Ministerial Squad was there in force. Some were guests but others were playing the security role."
Tom's answering grin was more than enough to get Draco talking.
"The Longbottom heir was serving drinks but near the end of the night I saw him holding hands with Hannah Abbott." Draco reported.
"Really?" Harry asked, mystified. "Now that I think about it, I did see them on the dance floor."
"Possible romance there." Draco told him. "A family alliance at the very least... depending on the outcome. Susan Bones was there with one of her friends, signifying that she is independent of romantic attachments."
"Hermione was there." Harry contributed. "I think she mostly hung out with Ron and Blaise - who are currently dating but Ginny and Luna also kept her company as Hermione's 'date' wasn't exactly on his best behaviour and got kicked out just after dinner."
Draco nodded encouragingly and laughed. "I can't believe she said yes to that boorish oaf, Mclaggan! He ate so many Dragon tartare hors d'oeuvres that he threw up on Uncle Sev's shoes!"
Harry chuckled.
"A month's detention should curb his appetite for spicy food." Severus snarled, recalling the incident.
Draco went on to tell the gathering about all the attendees of the party. "Eldred Worple was introduced to us."
"The author?" Narcissa perked up.
"He had a vampire companion named Sanguini." Draco nodded. "It was quite disconcerting but I steered Harry clear of them when the man offered to write his biography."
"Professor Trelawney got drunk." Harry said, politely not giving a description of the scene she'd made.
"She was sloshed, Harry." Draco chuckled. "I was appalled at her behaviour. I won't be surprised if she's sacked before we get back to the castle."
"Marcus Belby was there with Melinda Bobbin." Severus put in. "Several of the older Slytherin students were invited but only a few attended. Everyone on the Gryffindor and Slytherin quidditch teams were there."
"Oh?" Tom asked, interested.
Harry nodded proudly. "Gryffindor has won the quidditch cup every year I've played."
Draco huffed. "He flies like a bird."
Harry chuckled, nudging his boyfriend with an elbow. "Well, it's your fault I'm on the team at all, you know."
Tom narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the young blond. "What does he mean, Draco?"
"You never told them?" Harry looked amused at the suddenly cagey expression on Draco's face.
"Father and Uncle Severus know! We didn't tell Mother because I would've gotten in worse trouble at the time and Uncle Tom wasn't around to be told." Draco huffed. "The reason Harry got onto the team in first year is because I did something stupid."
"It was our first flying lesson and Neville's broom malfunctioned. During the chaos, he dropped his brand new remember-all." Harry remembered fondly. "Madam Hooch left to bring Neville to the hospital wing..."
Draco broke in. "After telling us to stay on the ground until she got back..."
"And Draco picked it up, pretending like he might keep it himself." Harry continued with amusement twinkling in his eyes. "When I protested, he took off into the air."
"Harry gave chase even though he'd never ridden a broom before." Draco sighed wistfully. "He's a natural, of course, and he got close enough that I decided to punish him for playing the hero. I threw the remember-all toward the castle and it certainly would've hit Professor Mcgonagall's window if he hadn't caught it in time."
"You caught a remember-all?" Narcissa asked. "One of those clear balls with a white cloud inside that turns red if you forget something? Ar-Aren't they made of glass?"
"Mmhmm." Harry nodded, recalling his confusion from that day. "There's a gold ring holding the sides together but yeah."
"And Mcgonagall saw you catch it?" Tom looked back and forth between them. "I can see why she made you seeker."
Lucius sniffed in disappointment. "Yes... well, that's not the story she and Dumbledore - or whoever he was - spun for the school's board of governors."
Harry blinked at his future father in law. "Oh?"
"She told us she'd seen you flying during your off hours when you caught the remember-all." Lucius muttered. "I would've opposed it if I knew you were disobeying a teacher and not being punished for it. I heard the true story later and insisted Severus give Draco detention."
"Why wasn't I given detention?" Harry asked.
"Dumbledore told Minerva and myself that the circumstances in which you made the catch mattered more than the fact that you had disobeyed Hooch." Severus gritted his teeth. "You were defending your friend from a bully. No matter that you'd recklessly risked your life for a replaceable object."
Harry nodded slowly. "He wanted me to be reckless. He probably wanted me to die in some blaze of glory during the war. It's pure luck that I'm a good flyer."
Severus sighed. "It's genetics that make you a good flyer, Harry."
Harry looked at him.
"Your parents were both exceptional flyers as well, but..." The older man admitted. "Well, it's just that Lily didn't enjoy it quite as much as James did... as much as you seem to."
Harry took in this information and smiled.
"In addition to flying, she had an unusual aptitude for potions and charms..." Severus' voice trailed off. "The sooner we oust Umbrage, the sooner we can do several important things in the school. She's gotten a few new rules posted since you left."
Harry frowned again. "That woman is a menace."
"What now?" Draco asked.
"Trelawney is on probation because of the scene at Slughorn's party and the entire staff will now be tested for alcohol and mind- altering drugs on a random basis." Severus revealed. "She will personally chaperone any future parties given by Slughorn... which might put an end to them so, perhaps the decree isn't a total waste of parchment."
"Wow!" Harry's jaw dropped. "That's a bit excessive."
"In other news," Severus smirked. "I think she figured out that someone helped you with the attack on the wards of your suite because the staff has been forbidden from giving students any information that doesn't pertain to the subjects we're paid to teach."
Narcissa gasped, Xeno shook his head, and Tom snorted derisively but Harry just stared at his Defence teacher. Draco bit his lip, wanting to laugh but his father was silent and he wasn't sure how he and Harry were really taking it.
"On the upside, the strengthening solution is within the curriculum..." Severus' chuckle was low and dark. "For my first year students."
"In defence?" Harry wondered.
"It's not just good for objects, Harry. Did Quirill not teach that?" Severus asked.
Draco shook his head. "I told you he wasn't that good."
"I suppose I'll have to coordinate with Slughorn and get him to teach certain potions when I cover them in class." Severus sighed unhappily. "Something else for the to do list as soon as Umbrage is gone."
"The woman harps about goblins, centaurs, and werewolves but she's the one really holding the children back!" Lucius shook his head, his blue-grey eyes shimmered intensely. "That half blood hag is sabotaging our childrens' futures!"
Suddenly, a glowing object flew across the room and dive bombed Lucius.
Harry stared as the object slowed down and he could see it was a book.
Draco's eyes widened as soon as he recognized the symbol on its cover and grabbed Harry's arm. "That's Merlin's book!"
They watched in amazement as the book body-slammed Lucius Malfoy's chest and shoulders a few times before finally opening its pages only to slam shut on his nose.
"Lucius Abraxas Malfoy! You take that back, right now! Her idiocies have nothing to do with her blood and you know it!" The book shouted as Severus attempted to use stunning spells against the book. "You! Do you think your spells are of any use against those of Merlin?"
"Merlin?" Tom whispered in awe as he watched the goings on.
"That's right." It said as it turned to face the person who spoke to it. "I am Merlin's personal grimoire and, as such, I belong to the new Dragonlord."
Every eye turned to Draco who was staring at the floating book that was speaking to them and glowing.
"Why did you wait so long?" Draco asked quietly, mostly in awe that Merlin's book would belong to him but also slightly hurt. "I began to develop my abilities at eleven. You could have helped us figure them out. You could have helped figure out what triggered them so early."
"I'm sorry, Draco." The book said softly. "One of the spells Merlin placed upon his tome has kept me from speaking to you before you had spoken to your first dragon."
Draco nodded solemnly. "So it wasn't up to you. I understand."
"I'm glad." The book replied kindly. "Do you understand why I yelled at your father?"
Draco nodded once. "His words were blood prejudiced."
Harry took a sly glance toward his future father in law. He was certain there was more to it than that but it was true so he kept his mouth shut.
"Yes...and no." The book said. "It's because that's where his thoughts go first when things don't go his way."
Draco thought about that and realised it was true. He'd long considered his family to be pretending to be prejudiced but, if the first thing that came to mind in a hard time was a person's blood status, they really were prejudiced. Nodding slowly, his face crestfallen, Draco said carefully. "Our family has become jaded and prejudiced. We have to think and temper our thoughts." He looked earnestly at his father. "Not sensor them. Just make sure they're coming from the right place."
"As representatives of Merlin's bloodline, you must be the example for the rest of the world. You must hold yourself to a higher standard." The book reasoned.
"Why must we?" Lucius asked petulantly. "It's not as though the rest of the world knows we are representing him!"
"But they will know soon, Lucius!" The book boomed at him. "It will come out at some point during your son's lifetime! Do you want him to be distrusted...? Or would you prefer him to be respected and revered?"
"Merlin was all of those at some point or other." Tom pointed out quietly.
"Unfortunately, truer words were never spoken." The book bobbed in the air and seemed to sigh before facing Lucius again. "The fact that this woman is a halfblood is secondary to the fact that she has been raised and trained with a vendetta hanging over her head. Hatred is learned, Lucius! By all means, disrupt her plans and remove her from her position of authority but keep in mind that it isn't because of her blood status."
Draco nodded firmly. "It's because she's a danger to us and the rest of the magical world."
The book bobbed again before coming to rest on Draco's lap. "Take me with you through the holidays but return me to this office before you leave for Hogwarts."
Draco patted the book's cover and agreed.
Several moments passed before anyone broke the silence.
"Draco, shall we go and get the cup?" Tom asked lightly. "I'd like to see your bracelet and talk about the theory that's likely not a theory any longer."
Draco nodded, still slightly shocked, and stood up. "Harry, you're joining us, right?"
Harry nodded and followed a couple of paces behind them as they excused themselves and left the room. He remained silent but curious until he felt he could adequately contribute to their conversation.
"My Unspeakables said it was possible, you know." Tom said softly to his nephew. "They speculate that he had enough time between the moment of the duel and the time the aurors found him standing over the injured body of Grindelwald but there's one thing they can't quite figure out."
"The polyjuice." Draco nodded. "It takes a month to brew - so how would he have performed the switch?"
"I think..." Harry interjected confidently as they climbed the stairs toward Draco's suite. "That first meeting would have to have been a glamour or something ...not polyjuice... unless he somehow foresaw the outcome and was ready for the possibility."
Tom hummed. "Interesting point, Potter."
"And we'll have to start thinking about where he's hiding the real Dumbledore." Harry reminded them.
"Actually, I've been thinking about that." Draco replied hesitantly. "We don't know the protocols at Nurmengard Prison. We don't know anything about the warden or guards... they could be susceptible to bribes or threats..."
"Or favours." Tom reminded the younger men when they paused on the landing of the grand staircase.
"True." Harry murmured with a frown. "He could be right there under all our noses!"
"Nurmengard was made by him, you know." Tom told the young lords. "During his rise, he bought the mountain and carved the castle out of it. The ones who sentenced him to imprisonment there thought it was suitably ironic to keep him in the prison he'd created to keep his enemies."
"That makes it suitably ironic that it was used for its original purpose." Harry snorted as they began climbing again.
Draco eyed his betrothed as the group came to a stop outside his room. "Are you alright?"
Harry nodded. "Why?"
"You seem... different." Draco replied. "Some of the things you've said today were... I don't know ..."
"Sarcastic? Darkly humorous?" Tom guessed. "Morbid?"
Draco shrugged but gave Harry a nod.
"I see what you mean but I'm sure I'll be fine." Harry nodded. "I've just taken off my rose colored glasses, so I see all the shades of grey. You should show Tom your bracelet and give him the cup."
"I'll get to all of that." Draco said, opening his door. "First on my list is to give you the item that tells the dragons you're my mate."
Harry smirked. "Alright."
"In addition to the chest that held these items, the vault held a large number of books and lots of equipment for brewing potions." Draco walked confidently to his bed where Harry could see a satchel and several other items laid out. "That reminds me - if I ever say I need a new cauldron, I should just go to the Dragon guarded vault because there were so many. I think they were even made in every possible material."
"Really?" Harry laughed. "Solid gold? Wooden?"
"Even glass." Draco nodded and held up two bracelets. "This armband will go to Blaise... but this is yours."
Harry took it in his hands and looked it over with a mixture of curiosity and awe. The bracelet itself was a deep brown leather cuff and the gold Celtic style dragon stood out against it perfectly. "It's beautiful. Would you put it on me?"
Draco smiled as he took it back and placed it around Harry's wrist. "This marks you as the Dragonlord's mate."
Harry grinned and gave him a chaste kiss, in consideration of their audience. However, when the young couple turned to look for Tom, he was crouched beside the door murmuring to Nagini's offspring who had just entered the room.
"Hello, Shika and Suki." Draco smiled gently at them, holding out a hand for Shika to climb his arm. "The cup is here, Uncle."
The older man stood as Suki took her sister's cue and began climbing onto her own master's arm.
Harry stroked Suki's head with one finger and watched his cousin pick up the gold cup.
"My magic resonates with it." Tom sighed happily. "The time is approaching that I will be able to release it back to myself."
"What do you mean?" Draco frowned. "I don't remember the book saying that there was a timetable."
"It's difficult to explain, Draco." Tom admitted carefully. "It is a feeling I get when I have the horcrux in hand. I feel my internal magic resonate with the magic contained in the horcrux and it tells me how soon the release must happen."
Harry didn't know what to think but it made a sort of sense because he'd had feelings like that before. Things he couldn't explain but deep down just knew. He nodded. "When?"
"Next week. Severus is out of one of the more common ingredients for the potion. He has ordered it and we will perform the ritual as soon as it arrives." Tom told them, but he paused as he pulled the door open and without turning back he added, "A visit before you return to Hogwarts would be welcome."
The door slammed shut behind him, leaving them in shock.
"He's coming back to us." Draco murmured, and although his expression remained calm, Harry could hear happiness in the words. "My father told me once that he was pleasant and even humorous when they met."
Harry nodded thoughtfully. "The creation of the horcruxes changed him in every way and their release will change him back."
Draco nodded distractedly for a moment then called his elf to help him pack while Harry lounged on the bed speaking softly to Suki.
Dainty bustled around the room popping in and out to collect her charge's belongings and pack them into a trunk while muttering about Draco leaving her again and much too soon and how would he get through the week without her.
"Say, Draco..." Harry looked up, casually amused. "I'm sure you know, we have more than enough elves at Hearthstone but if you'd like to bring one of your own, nobody would object."
"Why, thank you, Harry. I might have to take you up on that. " Draco bit his lip and tried to suppress his own amusement as his elf proceeded to turn pink until she disappeared only to perform the rest of her duties while invisible. "If you really don't mind, I'll speak with my father."
Harry grinned and moved the conversation to a more delicate one. "Speaking of our elves, mine have asked if I'll be sharing my bed at Hearthstone."
Draco felt his face warm as he met Harry's eyes.
"I'd like to say yes." Harry said softly, holding out his hand. "Is that alright?"
Draco nodded, their hands touching as the door slammed open.
"Harry, we've got a problem!" Remus stopped short when he saw the two young men. "Oh, uhm, sorry to interrupt..."
Harry didn't look away from Draco's eyes as he answered his uncle. "It's alright, Moony. What's wrong?"
"The Weasley kids are all at Potter Grove." Remus informed him.
"What?" Harry blinked and whirled to look at the older man. "Why?"
"Arthur was just attacked. He stayed late in an attempt to finish the task that would've kept him and Molly from joining us in the morning." Remus continued. "While he was working, someone blocked him from leaving his office. He got a patronus off, telling Molly what was happening and she was able to contact some auror friends, but by the time they arrived, he was unresponsive on the floor. They got him to St. Mungo's and they're treating him now but she sent the kids to the Grove for protection."
"Ok..." Harry took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Ok. Yeah. Face each challenge as it comes, I suppose. Dobby!"
"Go." Draco took a step back. "I'll go speak with my father and meet you at yours."
"The elves will take Suki and Shika, now." Harry replied decisively.
Draco nodded before rushing off, leaving Harry to organise things.
The young lord looked at his head elf and began making plans. "Start bringing my cousins to Hearthstone immediately. I don't want them to get settled here and then have to move again while worrying about Arthur's condition."
Dobby snapped his fingers which called the other elves to him. "All rooms are ready for Master Harry's guests, but you is having to go first! Remember?"
"You're right. I did forget." Harry grimaced. "Ok, new plan - take the luggage and pets to Hearthstone. My things should be packed by now; Draco's trunk is there and Dainty is coming too. Dobby and I will go get Sigmund and open the estate. Where is Sirius?"
"He's supposed to be keeping them busy while I come to get you." Remus explained. "We didn't want them to wander."
"Good. Let them know they'll be leaving soon." Harry instructed, scooping up the two snakes and handing them over to an elf. "Dobby, please pop us into the suite at Hogwarts."
Dobby quickly complied and Harry carefully opened the door just enough to explain the plans to Sigmund. Dobby watched the snake remove himself from the door and created a glamour that made a realistic replica appear in his place.
Harry grinned as he closed the door. "On to Hearthstone Manor. You know where I need to place him, Dobby."
The elf nodded. "Dobby does know, Harry Potter, sir."
In the blink of an eye they appeared on a large rocky formation off the cliff-face near Margate, where waves crashed unpredictably against the rocks. The painting from Helga's rooms at Hogwarts had come to life but Harry wasn't quite sure how to trigger the bridge he'd seen. The manor house stood on top of cliffs and was surrounded by a wide open space that Harry could picture changing with the seasons. It was snowing and as the water rolled away, the barely visible opening caught Harry's eye, so he stepped forward until he was a foot's length from the edge.
Glancing down at the elf beside him, Harry remembered what the diminutive creature had said when he first asked about the property. Verbal and physical claim.
"I, Harry James Potter, have come to claim this property as my inheritance!" He shouted above the sound of the waves.
For a moment, nothing happened... Then, all of a sudden, the rocks below the cave began to slowly rise, forming a wide path outward and Harry felt a shift in the energy around him. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, holding tightly to Dobby's hand as they walked the new bridge.
The size of the opening in the cliffside was deceptive. As Harry and Dobby approached, they started to see a completely different environment than the one outside. The entrance seemed small but the cavern was large enough to fit a whole new world.
Trees were growing tall and moss was climbing the cave walls. At the deepest point of the cave, a large house seemed to be carved into the wall with a waterfall. Torches lit the path leading up to the house and the rooms inside seemed to glow with inner warmth. Harry barely noticed the detailed architecture and landscaping because he was looking for a badger statue or something that would let Sigmund protect him and his family.
Coming to the base of the central tower, which was an open circle of pillars, the young earl saw a badger statue directly in the centre standing on its hind feet with its front paws open to hold something. Instinctively, Harry placed Sigmund there and was rewarded by the badger's eyes glowing yellow while Sigmund's glowed green. Harry had long since informed Sigmund of his relation to Helga Hufflepuff in preparation for this day so he wasn't surprised that they stopped glowing very quickly.
"Dobby, call Milly and the others to bring my family to this spot." Harry instructed, walking over to a stone bench. "I want to be here when they arrive."
Ziva popped in first with Sirius and Remus who immediately made their way to Harry's side while Milly brought Luna and Ginny through. Corky came next with Ron and Draco's elf, Dainty, who took a critical look around and immediately popped away to retrieve her master. Podrey brought Fred and George who started looking around at the huge cavern. Maddy arrived next with Charlie and Percy.
"Bill is going to stay with Molly for now. He'll protect her until they can bring Arthur from the hospital." Sirius told his godson as Draco and Dainty arrived with Dudley. "Zack has agreed to join the rest of you on Boxing day."
"I can see the sense in Bill's plan but..." Harry nodded thoughtfully, keeping track of his boyfriend's location as the blond wandered along the patio. "I think he should make a quick visit now, so he can bring them straight here from St. Mungo's."
"That sounds reasonable." Remus replied quietly.
"Would one of you like to get him or should I send an elf with a note?" Harry smirked.
"I'll go." Sirius grinned. "Back soon."
"Dobby, what have we got here?" Harry asked as he left.
"This is being a large estate, Master Harry, sir!" Dobby's chest puffed up proudly. "Most of the elvesies are being needed while it is in use so Winky and Roody be remaining at Hoggy-warts to keep anyone from getting suspicious, but all other elvesies are here along with Dainty, Mister Draco's elf."
"Wonderful." Harry replied. "Why don't the rest of you start showing everyone to their rooms? I have a question for Milly."
Milly joined him as he strolled across the sprawling patio in the direction of the swing Draco was considering sitting on.
"If the house is here... what's going on with the house on the surface?" Harry asked.
"Badgers is diggers, Master Harry." Milly giggled. "Badgers is also known for sometimes making their homes in the old homes of other animals. Milly's mother and grandmother told of Missy Helga seeing the surface house and liking it so much that she kept it but she wanted a safer house. She wanted her element surrounding her true home."
Harry nodded. "So the surface house is connected to this one?"
"Yes, Master Harry." Milly giggled again.
"Is it used for anything in particular?" Harry asked, wondering if it was only meant to be a decoy home.
Milly shook her head. "It was used for visitors who were not close family friends when Missy Edith's grandmother, Gunnora, was in charge but when she left this estate, she ordered all furniture in the top house to be stored away."
"Oh?" Harry asked with a slight frown.
"Yes, so we be putting them in specially made rooms along the passage between houses." Milly told him earnestly. "Please to be knowing that Milly's grandmother was always telling Milly that Miss Gunnora was certain the estate would stay empty until a wizard who could control the elements was born."
Harry's eyes whipped toward Draco, who was now in earshot. "I see."
"We four elvesies maintain every room in both houses and the passage that connects them, Master Harry." Milly stood proudly. "Storing the old furniture away helped us do that."
"I'm sure you've been doing an amazing job, Milly. I'll want to see everything before we leave, thank you." Harry replied. "I'd like some time with Draco now, if you could show Dainty where she'll be staying and figure out where she fits with the rest of you."
"I've already reminded her that, since we're guests, she's subordinate to Dobby." Draco murmured as Harry came closer.
"I'd prefer her role to be more of a 'help where needed' thing instead of defined by a specific hierarchy." Harry replied softly. "But she's your elf."
Draco smirked as he accepted a light kiss from Harry. "Might I persuade you to show me our room?"
Harry's eyes widened as he realised what that meant. "Dobby!"
"You forgot to tell him?" Draco chuckled.
Harry's cheeks flushed. "I had other things on my mind!"
"It is being ok, Master Draco. Dainty told Dobby about the arrangements you has both agreed upon. If you'll follow her, she will show you."
Draco's smirk was instantly back. "What a wonderful example of 'helping where needed'... wouldn't you agree, Potter?"
Harry gritted his teeth and took hold of his boyfriend's hand. As they began to follow Draco's elf into the house.
"I don't know, Gran, are you sure you want to be here instead of with Uncle Algie and the others?" Neville asked the head in the fire. "I'll understand if you change your mind."
"Of course, I'm certain, Neville." Augusta Longbottom assured her grandson. "The arrangements have been made with your head of house. I'll arrive after breakfast and take you to Ollivander's. We'll have lunch in London and be back in plenty of time for dinner. After that, I'll go home and rest while the elves are preparing for Algie's visit on Boxing day."
"Yes, Gran." Neville sighed as the fire died out and looked over at the only other person still in the common room. "Well, goodnight, Hermione."
Hermione smiled kindly at him. "Night, Neville. Happy Christmas."
"Happy Christmas..." Neville paused. "You know, I'm a bit surprised you didn't go home and spend it with your parents, Hermione."
"I missed nearly a week of classes, Neville. I need to catch up." She reasoned with a lonely sigh. "I miss them and I want to see them and have fun but it's important for me to do well."
"I can see that...but family is important too, Hermione." Neville said quietly.
Hermione looked at him for a moment and made a decision. "So are friends...and I've upset mine. I need to get back the closeness I had with Ron and Ginny and Harry."
"But they're not here." Neville frowned. "How can you do that if you're here and they're not?"
She realised he didn't get her hint so she tried again with a little less subtlety. "If I concentrate on my classes now, I'll have more time for friendships when they're back, but I also have to prove myself to Harry, Neville."
"And how are you doing that?" Neville's lip curled. "By joining the Ministerial squad?"
Hermione nodded. She looked towards the boy's dorm, where Dean and Seamus were sleeping and, seeing no movement, felt safe whispering to Neville. "I'm spying for him."
"Really?" His eyes widened when she nodded. "Oh, thank Merlin!"
"If you need to get any messages to Harry and don't want to be seen doing it, you can give them to me." Hermione told him softly.
"I write to him all the time, Hermione." Neville chuckled quietly. "I could say the same."
It had never occurred to her to use Neville for that! She sighed. "I have a foolproof way to communicate with him but that would've been helpful last week."
Neville nodded thoughtfully. "Night, then."
"Wait!" Hermione called. "Why did you stay?"
"Well, to start, I didn't know my gran was planning a trip to Ollivander's to get me a proper wand... but Professor Sprout needed a volunteer from each year to stay for the plant project." Neville reminded her. "Harry put such faith in me by recommending me in the first place that I just... Well, I've really put a lot of my heart into SSSHEEP and I want to see it through."
"Oh, that's right. I said I'd be busy with the rest of my classes so I couldn't." She nodded distractedly. "I'll be back after the break though."
"That's good." Neville yawned. "Listen, I need some sleep or I'll end up sleeping through Christmas. Night, Hermione."
She just smiled softly and watched him go.
Harry woke up and found Draco's head resting on his shoulder. He smiled softly down at the blond hair currently draped over Draco's eyes and gently brushed it aside.
Draco scrunched his nose and blinked as he awoke.
"Morning." Harry grinned and tilted Draco's face up but Draco pushed away.
"Morning breath, Harry!" He said, turning his head and then his body. Soon he was rushing toward the bathroom.
Harry sighed contentedly, getting up. "Would you like some cocoa? I'll call an elf."
"Thanks, but Dainty will be along with my coffee soon." Draco called.
Harry's eyebrow rose in surprise and he made a mental note because it sounded like something a good boyfriend would remember - coffee in the mornings. "Alright. Breakfast should be happening soon. What should we do with our time?"
"Well, I'm tempted to explore the house and the buildings in the garden." Draco coyly suggested as he returned to the bedroom. "What's to say Helga didn't have a secret like Rowena's Nessie?"
"Hmmm... I suppose it's possible." Harry smirked. "Milly?"
Just as Milly popped in, so did Dainty - with two steaming cups. Handing one to each young man, she winked and popped back out.
A sip of thick creamy hot chocolate later and Harry was asking questions of the elf who had headed this household for the last century or so. He had so many questions, like did Helga have any secrets to uncover? Would the elves divulge them if she did? What would they find in the gardens of the cavern? Were there more of the endangered or extinct plants that she'd saved at Hogwarts? What about the grounds on the surface? Were they all snowed over or were there weather controlling charms?
Milly was rolling on the floor with laughter as she listened to all his exuberant questions. When he stopped to let her catch her breath, she calmed down but kept a smile on her face. "Oh, Master Harry! You is being so much like Missy Edith!"
"Am I?" Harry asked lightly.
"Oh, yes, Master Harry, sir!" Milly confided. "She was such a curious thing! Always asking questions. Always learning. Missy Edith got much Ravenclaw in her personality."
"Did she have any Hufflepuff traits?" Harry asked as he watched Draco move towards the closet to start dressing for the day. A screen popped up to give him some privacy.
"Oh, yes!" Milly grinned. "She had much affinity for plants and trees where you have more connection with the dirt and stone."
He'd never thought of it like that before. Maybe he should try to expand his connection to the Earth element while they were here.
Dobby popped into the room. "Master Harry Potter, sir. Your cousin is wanting a moment when you is having it."
"Which one?" Harry grinned. He was so used to having one cousin but now there seemed to be endless possibilities.
"Mister Dudley." Dobby responded without appreciating the specialness of the moment.
"I'll meet him on the patio as soon as I'm dressed." Harry replied. "We can have breakfast together."
"Very good, Master Harry, sir." With that, Dobby popped out.
"What could Dudley want?" Draco asked as the screen dissipated. "Is this alright? How should I dress?"
After finishing his cocoa, Harry turned to see what he'd chosen. "The Weasleys don't dress up for Christmas until dinnertime so that outfit is perfect." The dark grey trousers went well with the green shirt he'd picked.
Draco nodded happily as he slipped into his shoes. "I'd like to join you for breakfast with your cousin."
"I'm sure he'd like that too." Harry grinned and Draco drained his coffee cup.
Arriving at the patio, Harry saw that the elves had set up a number of tables across it. They had also decorated the cavern for Christmas. Fairy-lights twinkled on the trees and bushes while evergreen boughs were wrapped around the columns and intertwined with brightly coloured ribbons.
"This whole place looks amazing and it feels like a slightly chilly spring day. I love it! Oh, there's Dudley."
"I want to see the surface house." Dudley started without a greeting as soon as they sat down. "Maddy told me there's muggle stuff up there!"
Harry nodded. "It would make sense. Edith lived here, after all."
Dudley blinked. "Oh. Right!"
"I'm sure it was tiresome, always needing an elf or a person with active magic around... and if Gunnora was anything like what we've heard, she would've put in the necessary non magical amenities to make life easier for her granddaughter." Harry quietly reminded his cousin.
Dudley smiled softly. "Yeah she sounded like a sweet lady."
"Oh, good! You're up, Harry!" Ginny called out as she bounded over to their table. "Luna's trunk broke while we were unpacking and the elves said there's a few similar trunks that were stored away somewhere and they might be in good condition but we don't want to do something like that without asking so..."
"Can we look for them?" Luna asked as she came up behind the young Earl.
"Sounds like we've got a willing search party." Harry joked. "Dudley wants to see the upper house and Draco and I were already planning to explore. Why don't you join us?"
"We'd love to!" Luna smiled serenely and sat in one of the open chairs.
"Milly?" Harry called gently.
"Yes, Master Harry?"
"After Ginny and Luna finish eating, we'd like to look through some of the storage rooms. We'd specifically like to find the trunks that might be suitable for Luna's use." Harry confided.
"If none are in functional condition, I'll send word to my father to buy her a new one from the place on Diagon." Draco offered.
"Thank you, Draco, but I'm sure that won't be necessary." Luna commented as the elves served breakfast.
The other Weasleys trickled in as the meal progressed and Harry kept a special eye out for his assistant. It wasn't until the group was about to leave that he showed up.
"Percy!" Harry called out before asking the others to go on. "I need a word with him before I get involved in the great trunk search. You go on. I'll meet you."
Draco sighed but nodded and pulled Luna along with Ginny trailing them.
"How have you been, Percy?" Harry asked. "I know you're in a position where you're alone a lot. Have you felt watched or vulnerable at all? I'm not sure what we can do about it but..."
Percy cut him off with a hand gesture. "I'll have you know, Harry, that I was at the top of my class. The head girl and I were neck and neck for that spot every year I attended Hogwarts. I can take care of myself."
"That's good to know..." Harry nodded thoughtfully. "But there's no shame in admitting that your job with me puts you in danger and I'll be considering ways to make it safer."
Percy sighed. "I suppose being the assistant to some other lord or Wizengamut member would be less dangerous but not by much. If you'll excuse me, I have something to discuss with Charlie."
Harry smirked as his cousin walked off to find his brother. Seeing his now numerous cousins scattered across the patio, the smirk grew into a grin just in time for Sirius to arrive.
"What are you up to this fine morning, Lord Potter?" The older man asked with a smirk.
Harry filled his godfather in on his plans and promised to return for lunch. "Oh, hey, before I forget... I'm worried about Percy. He's alone a lot or travelling. He swears he can take care of himself but I want to give him an edge. Can you think of anything? I know you were an auror."
"I'll think on it, pup." Sirius told him. "He's been invaluable as an assistant to us both. I agree that he deserves it."
Neville walked out of Ollivander's shop with his new wand in a wrist sheath feeling a whole lot more confident than he had that morning. He was certain those bullies wouldn't know what hit them if they attacked him now. He also knew that his grandmother could see a difference in him. She was treating him with a bit more respect but it was subtle. She was asking him to do things instead of commanding him like an elf.
"I was thinking of a muggle restaurant for lunch, dear." Augusta suggested as she looped her arm through his. "What would you like to do afterward?"
"If you're up for it, perhaps I can show you the greenhouse. It's been a while and we just successfully got several of the clippings to take root!" He told her as he tightened his cloak.
His exuberance for SSSHEEP came through loud and clear and suddenly she saw the man he was becoming instead of the small piece that was left of her son who was hardly a man at all anymore. She sighed happily, nodding along as he went on about the plants and the innovative ways they were turning around the world of herbology. This went on throughout their meal and she took him by side-along apparition back to the gates of Hogwarts where they strolled toward the greenhouses.
When they arrived, Neville opened the door for his grandmother and looked around uneasily. "That's odd. I can still see my breath... the wards shouldn't let it get this cold! The seedlings!" He rushed from pot to pot casting warming charms.
If Augusta thought of calming him, it didn't show. She simply lifted her wand and called some Hogwarts elves - as was her right as a member of both boards in control of the project. She spoke with a commanding presence, taking control of the situation. She sent one elf to fetch Professor Sprout and another to find the herbology expert currently on campus. A third elf was sent to inform Roody who hurried to report the news to Harry. Almost immediately, the young lord sent Bisbee, Tilly, and Corky to help out.
"Oh, no!" Professor Sprout frantically called up an accounting of the wards. "Oh, no, no, no! The wards have been altered!"
As soon as the staff members arrived, they called the student volunteers and the elves were released to their previous duties while everyone helped Neville cast warming charms or wrap blankets around the pots.
Augusta looked on in horror as Neville brought over a pot that didn't seem to have anything in it. When he got closer, she saw the wilted stem of one and the leaf of another.
"There's a frost over these seedlings, Professor." Neville looked forlorn. "They're the ones from the clippings I took myself and I'd like permission to keep this pot in my room to nurse them back to health."
"That depends on what plants they are, Neville. Put it off to the side and we'll discuss it." Professor Sprout told him kindly, placing a stasis charm on it before going over the information she was receiving from the wards. "Someone switched the wards from winter to summer. That, combined with the cold weather outside, did us in! We'll be lucky if even one of the original specimens survives!" She sagged visibly. "Someone will have to break the news to Lord Potter and Lady Malfoy."
"I'll tell Harry." Neville stood tall when Sprout seemed about to protest. "He's my friend and he trusted me enough to recommend me to the program. I should be the one to tell him it's ruined before it's begun."
"Neville, you're not to blame!" Augusta began to interrupt. "He'll understand. Anyway, I'm one of the founding members of SSSHEEP and, as such, I'll tell him."
"Of course he'll understand, Gran, but I was the last one here!" Neville protested. "Maybe I wasn't the one who changed the wards but if someone got in, then I must not have closed up the greenhouse properly or maybe they snuck in when I was busy with some task. I don't know."
"Neville? What's going on?" Hermione called from the doorway. "I stopped at the kitchen and the elves were in an uproar. I heard one say something about plants so I came as quickly as I could."
"Someone altered the wards, Hermione. The plants are dying." His shoulders straightened. "If you'll excuse me, I need to find out how to get a firecall with Harry."
The staff of SSSHEEP watched him leave but Hermione followed him, though he proved too fast for her to keep up. By the time she found him, Neville was knocking on the door to Harry's suite. She frowned, knowing nobody was there but, as soon as an elf opened the door, she understood.
"Please ask Harry to firecall the Gryffindor common room as soon as he can." She heard him say.
"That is not being necessary, friend of Master Harry." Roody smiled and grabbed his hand before promptly pulling him into the sitting room where Harry smirked at him from the fireplace.
"Alright Nev, fill me in. How is everything in the greenhouse?"
Neville blinked in shock but quickly found his tongue and relayed the sad news.
"Oh, Neville...I'm so sorry to hear that!" Harry sighed, sympathetically. Then, something occurred to him. "Hmm... You know what I think?"
Neville shook his head miserably.
"I'm sure your grandmother has already thought of this since she's there but I think they should put everything in stasis for a few days. The whole project is under the control of SSSHEEP which has a board of directors and you're related to one member and are speaking to another." Harry seemed to lean toward him. "I'll be in touch with Lady Malfoy sometime today and she can set up an official meeting in a few days to make the decisions that need to be made."
"Alright." Neville nodded slowly as he thought about this. Professor Sprout respected Harry's opinion so she'd probably agree right away.
"Nev, she respects your opinion too." Harry looked pained. "I'm just in a position to take advantage of the respect people have for me whereas you still have your grandmother to take care of you."
"Did I say that out loud?" Neville mumbled, turning pink.
Harry nodded. "Herbology is your best subject and Professor Sprout knows that. Do you know... when I asked her to get you involved, she told me she'd already thought of you."
"Really?" Neville asked innocently.
Harry nodded again. "So pull some Gryffindor courage up from deep inside you and go tell Professor Sprout what we talked about. Then you can help her and your grandmother secure the greenhouse."
Neville's face visibly changed as he tried to follow Harry's suggestion.
"You had plenty of courage when you walked in here and told me about everything, Nev. I could see it in your eyes." Harry could see that his words were having an effect. "Just go talk to them."
Neville nodded and stood to leave. "I'll write you tonight."
Harry cut the fire as his friend left the suite and shook his head. That needed to be handled. Neville had power but lacked confidence. Maybe there was something he and his cousins could do about that.
He came to a stop outside an open door and looked in to find Draco looking over Luna's shoulder to read something she was holding while Ginny was seated on the floor below them. They all seemed to be holding pieces of parchment.
"What did I miss?" He asked.
"Harry! There you are!" Dudley came up behind him. "We found some old letters and I went looking for you!"
"The letters are written to Edith from her grandmother." Luna said softly, holding out the letter she'd been reading.
Harry took it and skimmed the words. There were the expected endearments and a mention of Edith's brothers. Harry smiled gently, feeling a real connection to his mother's side of the family for the first time.
Dudley handed him a small pile of letters that were tied with ribbon. "The trunk was full of them. Maybe we'll find out more about her... more about Zebrawood."
"I want to." Harry nodded, overcome with the possibilities of the past. "I really want to know about her and Zebrawood and how she came to leave the magical world. That's a brilliant bit of family history... but we need to look at the big picture first, Dudley."
"Actually, Harry, I think this would be a great job for Dudley. Think about it. It could teach him something about the magical world and keep him involved even while we're at our separate schools." Draco murmured. "Your godfather and Professor Lupin would be here to help him if he runs into a problem. He has access to a whole world we don't. He even has access to Zebrawood's headmistress as well."
"I dunno..." Harry sighed. "Dudley? What do you think?"
"I... I really want to do it, Harry." Dudley frowned. "You're probably right that it's not part of the big picture but it is part of us and our connection to each other... and that's something worth looking into because it's what your mum died for."
"No. She died to protect me from Voldemort." Harry protested.
"She died because someone was trying to kill you." Draco broke in. "We've already figured out that she was misled on several counts. Nobody knows the real reason, and I doubt we'll ever find out unless we investigate as many of the possibilities as we can."
"Zack and I should be able to answer any questions that Harry can't, Dudley." Luna laid a gentle hand on Dudley's. "We've got access to information from our family. Don't forget that Lily was the product of two generations of squib and muggle unions. Our vaults might have a journal or the opposite letters to the ones you're holding. Your vault might even hold some clues."
"I see what you're saying." Dudley nodded slowly. "All of you... Harry needs to concentrate on the big picture and while these letters are part of that, they're not a large part. I have more time and a serious interest in our family history. I can look into the subject and let you all know what I find out. I've been wanting to help out more, anyway."
"I dunno." Harry still seemed unsure. "You'll keep me informed if you find anything that might be dangerous?"
"Whoa! Why are you saying that word, Harry?" Remus asked as he joined them. "Who's in danger?"
"Nobody yet." Harry commented before motioning for someone else to explain.
Draco and Luna took up the cause and when Remus got the gist of the situation he sighed.
"Digging into the past can disturb people, Dudley." Remus frowned. "By all means, read the letters and share what you learn but if it does get dangerous..."
Dudley nodded eagerly. "I'll take you or Sirius if I need to go to the bank and, if anything comes up that connects to Hogwarts, I'll call Harry on the mirror."
"Good." Remus sounded stern. "The elves have tea ready and Bill has arrived with an update on Arthur's condition."
"Great, because I have something to share with everyone." Harry replied grimly. "News from Hogwarts."
Dudley packed up all the letters and had Milly transport them to his room while the group followed Remus to a large sitting room.
End note - Alfrun Rose is the name of the actress who played the young redheaded witch in the Fantastic Beasts movie Crimes of Grindelwald. Since the character wasn't named, I named her after the actress.
