Snippet 07- Meeting The Monsters (Part 1)
Timeline- Between 'Ho-Hum and the Alien Vistation' and 'Law & Order: Leanbox- Guilt Tripped'.
Before officially resigning as Vert's bodyguard, the goddess had convinced Peach to perform one final duty, which involved an incident that had taken place at Mt. Ebott, during Ho-Hum's hijacking of Affimojas' airship. It wasn't everyday that one met monsters that not only didn't attack a CPU on sight, but had actually assisted them in their journey up the mountain. So it was that Vert and Peashy flew a hovercraft back to the mountain for the former to establish more official ties with these friendly monsters, and to commend the one in particular- Undyne- who had saved Adrian from death at the hands of BlackGatomon.
"So from what Neptune and Adrian told us, there are three of these friendly monsters that we know about- Papyrus the skeleton, Undyne the mermaid, and Dr. Alphys the dinosaur," Vert summarized, sitting next to Peach behind the NPC pilot.
"Right... Papyrus was loud but friendly, Undyne's a blood knight, and Alphys is a scientist," Peach nodded. "But where are we gonna find them? Neptuna and little me only found Papyrus by chance, and Undyne just happened to be training at the summit... I doubt she and Alphys actually live up there..."
"Well, I'd heard rumors of a village filled with monsters that had recently appeared in south Leanbox," Vert responded. "The appearance of these three leads credence to that rumor... and since Neptune and the others met them on Mt Ebott, said village must be either somewhere on the mountain itself or close by."
"Question is, where did they come from?" Peach wondered. "And why are they not hostile to humans? I mean, sure, there's Dogoo Man and Dogoo Lady working under S-Sha, but..."
"Well, I'm sure we'll find out when we meet them," Vert stated. Looking out the window, she spotted something... "Excuse me, could you fly over to that formation over there?"
"Yes, Lady Vert," the pilot replied, turning the hovercraft in that direction. As they approached, several house-like structures became visible...
"Hey!" Peach pointed. "That guy down there! He looks like a goat-man with horns!"
"Well, it seems we've found the monsters' home," Vert surmised. "Pilot, set us down a short distance away... we don't want to spook these monsters, after all."
"Yes ma'am," the pilot nodded...
*Down at the village...*
"HEY! LOOK UP AT THE SKY!" Papyrus the skeleton pointed. "IT'S A BIRD! IT'S A PLANE! IT'S... WHAT IS IT, EXACTLY?"
"I'm not sure," Asgore said as he looked up at the strange object, using one hand to block the sun's glare. "Tori, do you have any idea?"
"I'm not sure, either," Toriel squinted as she tried to make it out. "Whatever it is, it seems to be coming this way..."
"Um, I think I know what it is," Alphys said as she waddled up. "It looks like one of those futuristic 'hovercrafts' that I've seen from human anime..."
"SO HUMANS ARE COMING TO VISIT US?!" Papryus exclaimed. "YES! NOW'S MY CHANCE TO MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION AS THE MONSTER'S MASCOT!" With that, he dashed off in the direction of the approaching craft.
"Papyrus, hold on!" Asgore yelled after him, to no avail. "Oh, dear... Tori, could you go and get Frisk? Just in case Papryus gives them the wrong idea..."
"...all right, I'll go get her. But don't you do anything rash, either!" Toriel warned, before heading off.
"Of course not. I've learned from my mistakes," Asgore tried to assure her.
*Not far away...*
"Lady Vert, there appears to be a... skeleton waving at us," the pilot observed.
"Must be that Papryus guy," Peach guessed. "He doesn't look aggressive, at least..."
"Well, in that case, you should leave your helmet off when we disembark," Vert suggested. "Go ahead and set down, pilot, I think we'll be fine."
"Roger, Lady Vert," the NPC agreed, reducing the power, the hovercraft lowering down until it came to rest on the ground, a few rods extending from the underside for stability. "All right, we're down. I'll stay here in case we need to make a quick exit."
"Thank you, though I don't believe it will be necessary," Vert said as she and Peach stood up, the latter sliding the door open...
(Music- 'Bonetrousle', Undertale)
As they exited, the skeleton ran up to them excitedly. "WELCOME, HUMANS! I, THE GREAT PAPRYUS, WELCOME YOU TO OUR HUMBLE VILLAGE!" Peach clapped her hands over her ears, while Vert visibly grimaced from the volume.
"Could you kindly lower your voice, please?" Vert requested. "Or, if you cannot do so, at least stand back a ways?"
"OH, SORRY! FRISK DOESN'T USUALLY MIND MY VOLUME, SO I THOUGHT YOU WOULDN'T EITHER!" Papyrus exclaimed as he backed off a few feet.
"I sure hope the other monsters aren't as loud as you are!" Peach shook her head to try and dissipate the ringing in her ears.
"nah, my brother's the loudest out of all of them," another voice spoke up behind Peach, causing her yelp in surprise and spin around... but no one was there! "i'm down here." the blonde looked down, and sure enough, there was a small, pudgy skeleton dressed in a blue coat and baggy jeans.
"SANS! IT'S NOT NICE TO SNEAK UP ON OTHERS LIKE THAT!" Papyrus admonished. "WHAT IF THE HUMAN ATTACKED YOU?!"
"then i'd dodge, of course," the small skeleton, Sans, replied. "anyway, nice to meet you," he put his hand out.
"Um... yeah, you too," Peach said hesitantly accepting the handshake... but then a farting sound emitted from San's hand! "What the hell?!"
"SANS! NOT THE WHOOPEE CUSHION PRANK AGAIN! HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I SCOLDED YOU ABOUT THAT?!" Papyrus cried with an angered expression. "HUMANS, I APOLOGIZE FOR MY BROTHER'S RUDENESS! HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER!"
"...Well, if this is the worst thing a monster here does to us, compared to the ones I usually fight off, then I think we'll be fine," Vert sighed. "Anyway, allow me to introduce myself. I am Vert, ruling goddess of the nation of Leanbox. And this is my bodyguard, Peach Macintosh."
"A GODDESS?! WOWEE! SO UNDYNE WAS TELLING THE TRUTH!" Papyrus exclaimed. "SHE SAID THAT NEPTUNE AND PEASHY THAT I DROVE UP THE MOUNTAIN WERE GODDESSES, TOO! ARE THEY YOUR LITTLE SISTERS?!"
"Uh..." a low piano chord sounded at Vert's eyes shrunk to white circles, Peach putting her hands over her mouth as she tried not to burst out laughing. "W-well, I guess you could say I'm a big sister figure to the others, in a manner of speaking... B-but we aren't related by blood."
"I SEE! AND WHAT ABOUT YOUR BODYGUARD?" Papyrus asked next. "IS SHE YOUR CLONE OR SOMETHING?!"
"C-clone?!" Vert gasped. Peach couldn't hold it in anymore, her guffaws echoing over the mountain landscape as she collapsed to the ground, pounding the grass with one hand. "Oh, for Celestia's sake...!"
"that's my brother for you. he always makes people smile and laugh," Sans said with a wink. "that's why he's the official mascot."
"HUH? BUT I WAS ASKING AN HONEST QUESTION! HOW WAS I FUNNY?!" Papryus asked, confused.
"don't think about it too hard. oh look, here comes asgore." Sure enough, the horned goat-man Peach had spotted earlier was approaching, Toriel a short distance behind him.
(music fades out)
"Ah, I'm sorry about Papyrus. He means well, but he's not the smartest monster," Asgore said as he walked up. "Anyway, I welcome you, Goddess Vert and bodyguard. I am Asgore Dreemurr, the strongest of all the monsters. I welcome you to our humble village."
"Ah, (ahem), yes, well met," Vert grunted as she regained her composure. "And the one behind you, is she your sister or your wife?"
"THAT'S ASGORE'S CLONE! BUT HE DOESN'T HAVE HORNS OR A BEARD!" Papyrus exclaimed, causing Asgore to duck his head and sweat-drop in embarrassment.
"Greetings. I am Toriel," the goat-woman introduced herself. "Asgore and I were once married, but that ended a long time ago."
"Tori..." Asgore looked away.
"Well, my parents are divorced, too," Peach said, having managed to regain her composure. "Dad ran out on us after my childhood friend passed on due to illness..."
"Oh, my..." Toriel's expression turned sad. "What a shame. I suppose I can say that we lost our child as well..."
"What?!" Vert gasped. "Oh, my... so that's why you separated. I am so sorry for your loss... I can't imagine how that must have felt..."
"...No one should feel the pain and sadness we both went through," Asgore concurred, still averting his gaze. "But, thanks to a human child that helped free us, we've finally begun to try and move past that..."
"A human child? Oh, is that the little one hiding behind you, Toriel?" Vert observed.
"YUP! THAT'S FRISK!" Papyrus spoke up. "I TRIED TO CAPTURE HER ONCE, BUT HER CHARMS WERE TOO MUCH FOR ME! SO NOW WE'RE FRIENDS!"
"Frisk, come on out," Toriel gently requested. "It's not like you to be so shy..." At this, a child with short brown hair peeked out, who couldn't have been more than 8-9 years old. She wore a blue-and-purple striped shirt, blue pants and brown shoes, her skin a strange yellow tone, with her eyes perpetually closed. "I suppose it's been a while since you've seen fellow humans, hasn't it?"
"...Yeah," Frisk finally spoke, slowly walking in front of Toriel, looking up at Vert and Peach. "...Don't you get hot with that armor?"
"Huh? Oh! Um, well, I don't wear it all the time," Peach stammered, putting a hand behind her head. "It was just in case the monsters here turned to be not-so-friendly..."
"...If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you," Frisk replied with a small smile.
"Ohh... you're so ADORABLE!" Vert exclaimed, swiftly scooping up the child in her arms, hugging her into her ample bosom as a large heart floated over her head. "Who's a little cutie? You are! Yes, you are!"
"Mmm mmmph!" Frisk tried to speak, her little arms and legs flailing about.
"WOWIE! IS THIS WHAT IT MEANS TO RECEIVE THE GODDESS' BLESSING?! FRISK IS SO LUCKY!" Papyrus exclaimed.
"Lady Vert! Loosen up before you suffocate the poor kid!" Peach admonished.
"Huh...? OH! Oh, dear, that's right!" Vert promptly loosened her embrace, allowing Frisk to pull her head free and gasp in much-needed air. "I'm so sorry... when it comes to cute little girls, I just can't help myself!"
"Yes, I do understand what you mean, Lady Vert. Though I'm not quite so... overbearing about it," Toriel stated.
"You'll have to excuse her, she's got something of a little sister complex," Peach explained. "That is, all the other CPUs have younger sisters, or CPU Candidates, but she's all alone..."
"Y-yes, that's true," Vert sighed sadly. "I mean, I do have my Oracle, Chika, but she's mortal... she'll eventually grow old and pass on."
"Death is a part of life," Asgore spoke. "Aside from my child, I have had a close friend or two that have... 'fallen down' as we put it. I regret that they were not able to see the day that we finally were freed from the mountain, but we shall do our best to live on in their memory."
"Hmm, yes, you speak with wisdom, Sir Asgore," Vert nodded. "I assume that you were sealed in this mountain after a battle with humans?"
"Well, yes, though that was a long time ago. We're not even sure what the current year is," Asgore replied.
"Well, we can discuss that later. For now, how about we take you on a tour of the village?" Toriel suggested. "Some of the monsters may have strange appearances, but don't let that put you off."
"...As long as they don't start running at Lady Vert," Peach said firmly. "I take my duty seriously, after all."
"GOOD FOR YOU!" Papyrus spoke up again. "I WANTED TO BE A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL GUARD, MYSELF, BUT THEY WERE DISBANDED AFTER WE LEFT MT. EBOTT! BUT THAT'S FINE! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, SHALL INSTEAD STRIVE TO BE THE BEST MASCOT THE MONSTERS HAVE!"
"Well, I certainly cannot deny your enthusiasm," Vert said, even as she stepped away from the taller skeleton. "But yes, a tour of the village sounds nice. Shall we, then?"
"Put me down, please. I can walk," Frisk insisted.
"Oh... if you insist," the CPU sighed in disappointment, setting the child down.
"If you can't keep up with us, I could carry you on my shoulder instead," Peach offered.
"I'm fine. Thanks," Frisk said with a small smile.
"OFF WE GO, THEN!" Papyrus pointed, before dashing into the village proper, the others following at a more sedate pace.
*To be continued...*
A/N: So, yeah, one snippet isn't gonna be enough to do the Undertale cast justice. After all, Undyne hasn't even made an appearance yet! But that'll be rectified in the next snippet... ;-)
