Part 1
17 years had passed since that night in the shack. 17 years in which little Catelyn had grown up in the widths of Scotland. Only she was no longer Catelyn Snape Black, but Katie Bell.
Minerva McGonagall had deemed it prudent to change the child's name - for her own safety. No one should know who she really was. No one should recognize the connection between her and her parents, at least not yet.
Minerva took great care to guard the secret of Katie's parents and her true identity like the Philosopher's Stone or any other precious treasure.
She could still remember the look on Severus' face when Katie had had her school day at Hogwarts. When he realized that his daughter would now spend many months at the castle - every year. Back when he had handed the little bundle to Minerva's care, neither Bellatrix nor he for that matter had given this day a second thought. They had not imagined what it would be like when the sorting hat was placed on Katie's head. In fact, the sorting hat was able to see through any glamour charm and look at the true inner being of a witch or a wizard. But fortunately, his worst fears didn't come true. The hat also kept the secret. And Katie wasnt sorted into Slytherin, her parents' house.
All these years, Severus had only watched his daughter from afar. She was better off that way.
And today Katie had arrived at the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix along with Professor McGonagall. So far, Katie had been living in Scotland, in a small house. It had been a safe place, her safe place. But that safety no longer existed. Not since Voldemort had returned and had a body again. Since he was so omnipresent.
And when the summer would be over, Katie would return to Hogwarts for her last year of school. A school year that she also hoped would finally bring her some answers.
There were a few things Katie didn't know, for example, her parents' names. For a long time she had been wondering about her parents, about who she was. Katie didn't know much about her own life only that her family consisted of her grandmother.
She called Professor McGonagall her Grandma, even though they weren't related by blood. She had learned part of the truth before she came to Hogwarts. The truth was that her name was different, she just didn't know which name. And she knew that her parents had given her away to protect her because she was in danger. In as much danger as Harry Potter.
Right now, Katie had retreated to her room.
She needed a moment to herself especially after she had felt Molly Weasley's eyes on her again. Molly Weasley simply didn't like it when her son spent time with Katie. Katie was not the perfect witch for Percy in her eyes. Percy was destined for greater things and in Molly's eyes he needed the perfect witch by his side. A woman who would support him, watch his back, take care of the house and the children.
It was something Katie wouldn't be able to give him. Katie had plans for the future already. Potions and Charms were her two top subjects, along with Defense Against the Dark Arts. She wanted to study after school, preferably both subjects. And then apprentice under a master. And who knows, maybe in a few years she would be a respected Potions Mistress or a Charms Mistress - or maybe both.
But the Ministry had also expressed interest in Katie and her talent.
A while ago Kingsley had seen her with the wand, recognized her talent. In his opinion, she would make a good Auror or perhaps even do well working for the magical law enforcement.
Percy supported her in all her plans, no matter which path she would choose for her life. All that mattered to him was that she was happy. And she was, as long as he was by her side.
But still there were those nagging doubts. What if the secret about her true identity would one day be too much for Percy? What if the truth of who her parents were was something he couldn't handle?
A truth that even Katie didn't know and yet it scared her beyond words.
