Chapter 5: Fog

~o~

Kazuma let out a yawn as he made his way over toward one of the Hephaestus Familia's stores that also doubled as Tsubaki's workshop. It was still way too early in the morning so the streets weren't very crowded, though there were plenty of stalls being set up. He did see a few adventurers here and there heading toward the dungeon, but it was a trickle compared to what it would be later on.

"Should we really have left senpai behind, Kazuma?" Eris asked as she walked beside him, looking somewhat uneasy. "She was the one who healed them after all."

"Eh, let her sleep in today," he nonchalantly replied. "She'd just get mad about having to wake up early."

Hephaestus had wanted to meet with him again to finish their discussion from last time. Kazuma hadn't seen any reason to refuse so he obliged. He didn't bother bringing anyone besides Eris along since there wasn't any reason to do so. Eris needed to show up because she was their goddess, but the rest of them could skip out on the meeting and sleep in.

In fact, it was better this way since he wouldn't have to deal with them causing any trouble.

Hephaestus' store wasn't that far away from the abandoned church so it didn't take more than a fifteen minute stroll to get there. The sign hanging from the front of the door said that the store wasn't open yet, but he knocked on the door anyway. When nobody answered, he knocked on the door a few more times, though with a bit more force.

Eventually, after the seventh set of knocks, someone finally answered the door.

"Can't you read the si—oh, it's you," Tsubaki said with a muted voice, as if stunned.

She looked a bit different compared to the last time he had seen her. For one, there wasn't an eyepatch covering her left eye anymore. Though, what really caught his eye was that she wasn't wearing a shirt. Her tanned bare shoulders were open for all to see and the only thing keeping her ample bust from spilling out were some bandages wrapped around her chest. They could possibly be even bigger than Darkness'!

He suddenly felt someone elbow him in the ribs.

"Kazuma, she's talking to you," Eris pointed out while wearing a scary-looking smile on her face.

"Oh, uh, yeah! Hey, Tsubaki," he quickly said while rubbing his bruised ribs. "We're here to see Hephaestus."

"You're here a lot earlier than expected," Tsubaki mentioned as she opened the door some more. "Well, that's fine. Come on in."

As he stepped into the store, he could feel the sudden change of temperature from a bunch of furnaces running in the background. With Tsubaki leading, they started moving toward the backrooms. The deeper into the store they went, the more heated the temperature became. It was becoming hot as hell, and he already wanted to step outside just to get some fresh air.

Eventually, Tsubaki led them into a room where Hephaestus was hammering away at a piece of armor on an anvil.

"Hey, goddess," Tsubaki called out. "Eris Familia is here."

The goddess in question suddenly stopped her hammer mere centimeters away from the chestplate and looked up. The large eyepatch that she had worn the other day was no longer there as she stared at them with her crimson-colored eyes.

"...I didn't expect you to show up this early," Hephaestus remarked as she wiped a bead of sweat off her forehead. "I would have prepared some refreshments beforehand."

"Eh, it's fine," Kazuma waved off. "Was planning on getting something from the pub afterward anyways."

"Let's take a seat then, at the very least." Hephaestus put away her hammer and walked over to a table. "...Aqua didn't show up?"

"She wanted to sleep in," Kazuma casually replied as he took a seat next to Eris and Tsubaki at the table. "She's not really a morning person."

"...so I've heard," Hephaestus dryly remarked. "I'll get straight to the point then. Your companion, Aqua… she's not quite mortal, is she? Though, she's not divine either. It's almost as if she was something in between…?"

Kazuma shared a brief look with Eris for a moment.

"Well… It's a bit complicated," Eris answered for him with a forced smile.

"...I see." Hephaestus let out a sigh. "If you'd rather not talk about it, I won't force you to. I owe you all a great debt after all, but a word of advice. Not everyone in this city will be as understanding."

The smithing goddess clasped her hands together over the table.

"You should tell your companion to be careful with her words and about using her magic so casually on a god. What she did was supposed to be an impossibility, and there are people in this city who won't just leave her be if they were to find out about her…uniqueness."

"...thanks for the warning," Kazuma replied. "I'll be sure to let her know."

Though, knowing Aqua, she'd probably just forget about it by the next day.

"That is all I wanted to say on the matter. I will keep my eyepatch on in public for now until I come up with a plausible excuse," Hephaestus said. "On to another topic, there's something Tsubaki wanted to ask you all."

"Huh? Oh, sure," he replied with a curious look on his face.

"Thanks, goddess," Tsubaki said as she took over the conversation. "Kazuma, would you and your Familia be interested in making me your personal smith?"

"Personal smith…?" Kazama repeated with a quirked eyebrow. "What exactly does that entail?"

"Well, essentially you would be making me your exclusive blacksmith. You'd only use equipment forged by yours truly," Tsubaki excitedly explained. "In return, I'd forge you custom-made gear and handle all your repairs. Oh, and they'll be at discounted rates as well."

That didn't sound like too bad of a deal.

From what he had heard, Hephaestus Familia had some of the best blacksmiths in the city. He had also seen a bunch of their equipment on display at various stores across the city, and since he had the [Blacksmith] skill, he could tell that their quality was top-notch. Though, limiting himself to only using one person's equipment seemed like a rather big negative.

"Well?" Tsubaki asked as she threw an arm over his shoulder. "How does it sound? I can promise you that I'm the best damn smith in this whole city!"

Oi.

Didn't this girl realize she still wasn't wearing a shirt? He could feel her chest touching his shoulder. The only thing separating bare skin from skin at this point was a flimsy bandage and his shirt! Was he truly entering his popular phase?!

Eris only narrowed her eyes at him in response. Big boss, why do you have that look in your eyes as if you're looking at pond scum?

"As a reward for healing my injury, I'll even offer you a sponsorship if you accept Tsubaki as your personal smith," Hephaestus supplied with a small smile. "The Hephaestus Familia will provide the Eris Familia with a monthly stipend of store credit for a period of fifty years."

Tsubaki let out a low whistle in response.

"Woooow, I've never seen Hephaestus offer that to anyone before," Tsubaki remarked as she pulled him closer. "So, what's it going to be, Kazuma?"

From how Tsubaki said it, it was clear to Kazuma that she knew about Hephaestus' offer beforehand. While it was obvious that there was some kind of purpose linking both offers together, he couldn't figure out any other reason besides trying to get on his good side. Still, he didn't see any reason not to take the offer, and they didn't seem like the kind of people who would try to screw them over in any case.

Kazuma wasn't sure how much the stipend was, but for Aqua's feat, it probably wouldn't be small unless this smithing goddess was a miser. It really was a good deal, and he wasn't just saying that because of Tsubaki and her fondness for not wearing a shirt. For this much, it would probably be worth it even if the fine print condition was to join the Axis Cult.

That was just how good it was.

"You got a deal."

~o~

Traversing through the dungeon in Orario was a lot different than what he was used to.

For one thing, the floor design seemed to change a little bit every couple of floors. The tunnels in the first few floors were pretty much what someone could expect from a cave, but the deeper they went, the more things started to change. They were subtle at first, like the walls of the tunnels being a different color, but as they traversed down to deeper floors, the changes became a lot more pronounced.

The ceiling started to get much taller, and the tunnels became wider. Moss and other fungi started to cover up the walls. The number of rooms per floor gradually increased as well, and once they reached the eighth floor, the rocky ground turned into a grassy plain with an illumination similar to the sun's light emanating from the ceiling.

It was almost like they were back on the surface with how bright it was.

It was hard to believe that they were still in the same dungeon, but in any game with an endless dungeon or tower, if it was the same environment for every floor, it would probably have bored him into turning off his game console. However, there was no question that a game design like that was unnatural to real life. Places that could change like that were always artificially built, but then again, this was a fantasy world so he probably couldn't apply the same set of logic here.

As they went down each floor, the enemies changed.

Not so much that it would have been too hard, but it was a graduation progression of difficulty. After the floors with the different colored goblins and kobolds, there were insect monsters and shadow creatures. The shadows had creeped him out a bit when they started appearing out of the walls, but they weren't that much stronger than the goblins. And while there were frogs, they were of a smaller variety compared to the ones back in Belzerg and were definitely not big enough to swallow anybody whole.

When they reached the tenth floor, the land had become a blur of white and gray.

The air was filled with a dense fog–similar to that of morning mist–that obscured vision so he couldn't see too far ahead. What he could see was just an endless field of glaringly white and shiny grass, populated with crystalized trees that lacked any and all foliage that made them seem like the remains of a dead forest. With how eerily quiet it was, it almost seemed like a horror-themed floor.

Without his [Enemy Detection] skill, it would have been hard to keep his cool since it wasn't difficult to imagine the kind of scenarios that would pop up in such a foggy forest.

In fact, he could practically imagine long-limbed monsters creeping out of the mist, dragging people off and leaving behind trails of red on the luminous white grass. Those left behind would have to decide whether to chase after them into the unknown fog or to continue onward without knowing if they were still being stalked. Just the thought of that gave him the creeps.

Wasn't there a horror movie like this?

Then again, he was probably just worrying about nothing. The rest of his companions didn't seem to feel the tension at all, looking relaxed actually, but he supposed that was reasonable since the monsters they had faced so far had all been quite weak. Honestly, it was to the point that no one in his party had even broken a sweat. Though, that was to be expected since these last nine floors were still considered to be part of the beginner's area where level ones and twos tended to frequent.

While Kazuma and his party might have been level ones as well due to the system here, this was more like a new game plus type of scenario for them. In spite of how troublesome his companions could be, they had all gotten out of some pretty sticky situations in the past. Sure, they had employed some tricks to it, but that didn't take away from their feats. Much.

As they continued to trek through the thick fog, he suddenly detected something headed straight toward them.

"Heads up," Kazuma warned while pulling out his sword. "Something's coming straight for us."

"O-oh?" Darkness said as she pulled out her own weapon and moved up to the front of the party in eager anticipation. "P-perhaps, it'll be an orc?"

Oi, wipe the drool off your face woman!

Rushing out of the thick fog and running straight into Darkness was not an orc, however, much to her dismay. Instead, it was another adventurer with what looked like a nasty wound on his arm.

"G-get out of the fucking way!" The man was all but screaming as he tried to push Darkness out of the way, but she didn't budge at all and grabbed onto his shoulder instead. She didn't like it when Kazuma brought it up, but she was a lot heavier than she looked, especially when she had her armor on. "Let me go, damn it!"

"Please calm down!" Darkness shouted, momentarily stunning the man. "What happened to you?"

"A-a dragon! There's an infant dragon!"

That probably explained why his [Enemy Detection] skill was going off.

"A baby dragon?" Aqua excitedly asked. "Like Emperor Zell?"

"W-what?" The man questioned back, absolutely bewildered. "Who the hell is Emperor–"

And then, as if right on cue, a loud roar bellowed through the fog, echoing throughout the tenth floor and grabbing everyone's attention. Darkness must have let go of the man's shoulder during the commotion because he started running off again the very next moment. Kazuma quickly slid to the side and let the man pass by.

No point in holding him up any longer after all.

"Hey! That guy ran off before I could heal him," Aqua said with a frown. "Geez, doesn't he know an arch-priest when he sees one?"

"Kazuma, Kazuma!" Megumin pulled at his sleeve. "Can I blow up the dragon?"

"Hah…?" He looked down at Megumin with an exasperated expression. "You know, normally, people are supposed to run away from dragons."

"K-Kazuma! As a crusader, I can't just let this foul beast continue to roam around hurting others!" Darkness spoke with as much heroic fervor as she could manage. "We must defeat it!"

If he didn't know her as well as he did, he would have believed her, but it was pretty obvious what her ulterior motives here were.

"What? No, I want to adopt it!" Aqua huffed. "He can be Emperor Zell's fellow dragon buddy."

How she still thought Emperor Zell was a dragon even though he was a fully grown chicken at this point was beyond him. Actually, now that they were gone, who was going to feed Emperor Zell and Chomusuke? Hopefully, Vanir or YunYun had already stopped by and noticed that they had disappeared. After all, that stupid chicken and cat had grown on him.

Anyway, the real question here was what they were going to do about the dragon.

Fighting a dragon, infant or not, wasn't exactly at the top of his list of things that he wanted to do. Although, defeating dragons typically led to large payouts in fantasy settings like this, either in bounties or drops. There wouldn't ever be a time when money wasn't relevant, especially when he had to worry about Aqua's expensive drinking and borrowing habits…

Ah, screw it.

He was someone who had defeated the demon king. What the hell was an infant dragon going to do? At most, it was probably just a field boss, and that wouldn't be much higher than the mobs on this floor even though they haven't encountered any of them yet. Still, game progression dictated that they probably wouldn't get wiped. Besides, if it got too much, running away was definitely in the cards.

Kazuma clapped his hands, catching the attention of his party members who were still arguing about what they were going to do about the dragon.

"Let's defeat the dragon."

"Wah? B-but I wanted to adopt it…" Aqua said forlornly.

"The monster stone in the dragon will probably be worth a lot," Kazuma explained. "I'll treat you to some drinks after, alright?"

Aqua still looked reluctant.

"The expensive kind."

"Let's go kill it!"

So much for Emperor Zell's friend.

~o~

"Aki, come on. We have to keep running!"

"But we can't just leave him. We have to go back for him, Raul!"

"He was the one who told us to run!"

"But–"

"Do you want to make his sacrifice for naught?!"

Raul Nord had never been an exceptional adventurer. He had high hopes after somehow getting into Loki Familia a year ago, but since then, he had barely made any progress. Plain in appearance and unnoteworthy in skill, it was frankly a mystery to him why he had even been accepted. If he died, all that he would be getting would be a plain gravestone and–if he was lucky–a written eulogy. Unlikely, but since he was probably heading that way pretty soon, he hoped that he would at least get a page in somebody's memory.

Not long before, the infant dragon had used its claw to rip through his side with three parallel slashes. Not only were the slash wounds too close, making it difficult to stop the bleeding, but pushing his body to move in spite of that wasn't doing him any favors. The motion was exacerbating his wounds, leaving a trail of red on the white grass below. Soon, he probably wouldn't have enough blood to go on. Despite this, he did not stop running. That was simply because of one reason.

He had to make sure that Anakitty Autumn survives.

Anakitty–or Aki as she liked to be known as–had been recruited into Loki Familia at the same time that he had been, but unlike him, she had far more potential. Not only was her appearance enough to call her cute, but she was more skilled than him and smarter to boot. If it was her, she would go much further than he ever would. However, the main cincher was a selfish one; she was his friend.

Ever since they had joined up at the same time, they had become friends on the spot since both of them were beginners to the adventurer trade. However, the differences between them soon began popping up, and he wouldn't have been surprised if she had simply left him behind. However, she didn't, even when she should have.

That was why, no matter what, he couldn't let her die. At the very least, even if nobody else got out, she had to.

Even as he kept running while pulling her by hand, Raul could feel the cold touches at the tips of his fingers and toes. His heart pounded in his ears, but even then, he could hear the stomping steps of the dragon approaching from behind, following him by simply smashing through the trees. The fact that it was on their tail meant that his senior hadn't lasted very long. He shouldn't think bad about him, but he couldn't help cursing him under his breath.

"Raul…!"

It was so close now that a decision had to be made, but his choice had already been chosen a long time ago. Raul turned around while shoving Anakitty behind him.

"Aki, run." His voice was no longer a shout, and the blurriness at the edge of his vision seemed to pair up with the fuzzy fog of the forest. Despite barely feeling his hand anymore, he placed it on the hilt of his sword and pulled the blade out of its sheath.

"No…"

"Aki. I said, run."

"No!" Aki stepped up to his side, pulling out her own thinner sword. "Even if I run, I wouldn't be able to make it far."

"You're not injured, and you've always been faster than me. You can do it."

"I'm not leaving you."

"Damn it, Aki!"

"My decision is final," Anakitty said in a commanding voice. The same kind that she had always used when reprimanding him for doing something stupid, but Raul also knew that when she did that, there was no changing her mind.

"...if I go down, promise me that you'll escape."

"How can I–"

"Promise me!"

"...okay," Anakitty said in a smaller voice. "I promise."

By this time, the loud sounds of crystalized trees shattering were coming closer.

"I'll be the frontline," Raul said, placing both hands on his sword's hilt to form a two-handed grip. "Like always."

A large shadow appeared in the fog before them.

"Like always," Anakitty echoed, holding her own sword in a fencer's stance.

The large creature emerged from the fog with tendrils of mist sticking to its skin. With thick muscular legs that were taller than him, the quadrupedal orange monster stomped toward them, its elongated neck stretching forward to peer down at them with malevolent eyes. An equally thick tail swished behind it upon sighting them, smashing apart the nearby crystalized trees with casual ease in its excitement. There were no wings on its back, remaining smooth with no hard scales either.

To Raul, Instead of a dragon, it looked more like those dinosaurs that Loki had once talked about and drew on a napkin. Of course, that had been when she was drunk at a Familia dinner, but if anything, maybe those long extinct creatures originally came from the dungeon. However, that would imply that the dungeon existed before humanity, and that was something that he could not accept.

Raising its head up high, the dragon roared loudly as if proclaiming its victory even before the battle began. It rushed forward on four legs, its clawed feet rending trenches into the ground in its wake.

Raul roared back, not even sure what he was doing anymore. He charged forward, readying his sword to the side. If he could just injure its leg, that would give Anakitty that much more of a chance to–

"Agggh!"

"Raul!"

Raul had been so concentrated on what was in front of him that he hadn't seen the beast turn slightly, swinging its thick tail into his side. The impact torpedoed him away to the side, and his body slammed through a couple of trees before smashing into the ground roughly. There was no way to hold onto his sword, and as he ragdolled across the grass, his limbs became disjointed and twisted, broken multiple times over. By the time he rolled to a stop, he found himself lying on his back, looking at the sky above the mist.

A sky that was simply the cavern's ceiling.

He coughed up rich, copper blood. One of the shattered crystal branches was jammed into his slash wound, and the rolling had pushed it in deeper to pierce one of his lungs. His injuries were severe, and his death was a foregone conclusion. Weakly, but determinedly, he turned his head, hoping that the infant dragon had come to finish him off. However, that faint hope was dashed when he saw it advance on Anakitty instead, leaving him as simply the defeated and discarded trash.

"...Aki, why," Raul whispered, spilling out ichor with each word. "Why…did you…break your…promise…?"

"Snipe."

From out of sight, an arrow flew through the air to stab into one of the infant dragon's eyes, causing the monster to recoil in pain.

"Oh, was that a crit?"

Raul would have turned his head to look at the voice, but he didn't think he would have the strength to turn back to the infant dragon if he did.

The monster, roaring in pain and anger, swung its claw toward Anakitty. However, a blond female knight had already rushed in to stand in front of the catgirl. When the attack came, the knight swung her sword to counter, but despite looking like it would clash, she somehow missed with her sword slash swinging wide. In contrast, the monster's attack was on point. The infant dragon's claw smashed into the blonde knight's side, but instead of sending her flying, it barely moved her at all.

"Snipe!"

Another arrow flew through the air, piercing the other eye of the monster and causing it to roar in pain once more.

"Oh, this guy looks messed up." The female voice was pleasant to his ears–like songbirds singing on a spring day–even if the words themselves weren't. "Sacred heal!"

The pain and agony that he had been suffering from–and even the coldness in his extremities–vanished after a white light enveloped him. The cloud of suffering that had fogged his brain similarly disappeared, leaving him disoriented as if he had just woken up from a hangover.

"Wha…what?"

A beautiful woman with long blue hair stared down at him. Her blue and white clothing lacked any piece of armor, making it seem unsuitable for dungeoneering, but it gave her an ethereal feeling as if she was a fairy. Despite the fact that she was wearing a very short skirt and that he could see up it, he didn't do so because it felt almost sacrilegious to despoil her, though he didn't know why.

Instead, he was filled with a feeling that he had never felt before.

"...marry me."

"Huh? Did you say something?"

"No! It's nothing." However, just as suddenly, Raul urgently pushed himself up from the floor as he remembered the situation. "Aki!"

"Oh, you mean that girl? She's fine."

Turning his gaze, Raul saw that the blonde knight–and she was also pretty stacked now that he was paying attention–was still standing protectively in front of Aki. However, the infant dragon was already lying on the ground, dead with a sword impaled into the back of its head. Standing on top of the corpse's thick neck, holding onto the hilt, was a brown-haired boy who was unassuming in appearance and seemed to be around his age.

Despite that, there was no question that it was his sword when the boy pulled it out of the monster's head with a smirk. When that boy opened his mouth, Raul perked up his ears to listen closely to his victorious words.

"Looks like backstab still works even when I'm standing on top of them."

Raul didn't quite understand what he meant.

~o~

Kazuma swiped his sword to the side, flinging off the blood. Or at least, that was what was supposed to happen. Unfortunately, only some of the blood fell off. Frowning, he swung it again a couple more times, but there were still some bits that stubbornly clung to his blade. Sighing in frustration, he pulled out a cloth out of his pocket and began wiping down the blade. So much for wanting to look cool.

Even while standing on top of the corpse, Kazuma was able to spot Megumin walking up to him with a pout on her face.

"Kazuma, I wanted to blow it up!"

"Hey, the magic stone would have been destroyed too."

"Just admit it. You just wanted to be called a Dragon Slayer too!"

"What do you mean by 'too'? What you blew up back in Belzerg was a wyvern."

"That's a type of dragon too!" When she saw Kazuma's unconvinced face, her eyes began to glow. "What if I blow it up now?!"

"Don't you dare do it or I'll call you Corpse Killer Megumin!"

"No!" The glow in her eyes dissipated. "That makes me sound like a criminal!"

"Please…" The black-haired catgirl's voice was small, but the desperation in it was powerful. She ran up to the monster corpse and fell to her knees in front of them. "Please, help us. You're Eris Familia, aren't you? I heard about you from the newspaper. I'm Aki from Loki Familia, and my friends are–"

"Aki, I'm okay." A plain black-haired, spiky-topped boy in broken armor came up next to the catgirl. However, instead of comforting her, he fell onto his knees beside her. "My name is Raul, and I'm from the same Familia, but we aren't the only ones. We were running from the infant dragon, and we had to leave someone behind. Please, save him! I beg of you! Loki Familia will be–"

"I don't need much convincing," Kazuma quickly said to cut off what would obviously be a long and boring speech. Besides, it was already a foregone conclusion. "How far?"

"I don't know. We were running desperately, but if we follow the trail of destruction…"

"Too slow." Kazuma glanced around before looking at Megumin. "Looks like everybody ran away when the monster came. You know what to do."

Megumin smiled brightly before flinging back her cape and raising her staff in the air in front of her.

"Hear my name, for I am Megumin, Slayer of Dragons and Demon Generals!" Her eyes began to glow as power manifested from her body and flowed into her staff. "From this world to the next, all had fallen before me for it is the strongest attack magic in every world!"

Large magic circles began appearing in the skies, glowing with such a fiery crimson color that they pierced through the white fog. She swung out her staff, pointing it to a spot in the distance.

"Explosion!"

A fiery pillar of flames descended from the skies, piercing through the center of the magic circles until it hit the ground a fair distance away. The moment that it did, the flaming pillar erupted into a massive explosion of fire and smoke. It only took a second before the crashing sound reached them, followed by an intense shockwave of wind and heat that washed over them.

"What is that?!" Raul yelled, bracing himself. With his other hand, he grabbed Aki to shield her from the loose flying branches and crystalized wood chips.

"That's 73 points!" Kazama shouted back as he jumped down from the dragon's head and pulled Megumin behind the corpse to shield them from the flying debris. Aqua was hiding behind Darkness who was holding out her arms as if to embrace everything that was hitting her.

When the explosion finally dissipated and the winds settled down, Kazuma injected some mana into Megumin with [Drain Touch] before stepping out and taking a look around. There was now only a thinned-out forest with no sign of fog anywhere since the mist had been blown away by the wind caused by the explosion.

"Why only 73?!"

"We'll talk about it later." Kazuma turned to Raul and Aki who were starting to stand up, looking disoriented. "Do you see your friend?"

"What…? Oh!" Aki blinked as if just realizing it. She quickly glanced around. With the fog gone, the only thing that was blocking their sight was the trees, but they had all been shaved down. She pointed in a particular direction. "Over there!"

While Aki and Raul rushed ahead, Kazuma and his party followed them at a more casual pace. By the time they reached them, the two were already attending to a man lying on the ground. However, it was obvious at a glance that the man was dead since it looked like a large chunk of his chest had been bitten out of him.

"No…" Aki had her hand just under the man's nose, but it was obvious that he wasn't breathing. "Leon…"

"Damn it!" Kneeling next to her, Raul punched the ground with tears in his eyes. "If only I had been stronger…"

Kazuma, Darkness, and Megumin glanced at Aqua. For her part, Aqua merely shrugged her shoulders and stepped over to stand before the corpse.

"Resurrection!"
