Letters upon a page cannot describe Camp Halfblood, for it is a place beyond mortal understanding. It is almost like a painting. Emerald grass, beautiful azure skies with winged horses soaring through its clouds, an ocean teeming with sea life, and as odd as it sounds, an aura of home.
Lying down Chiron's back, I along with several demigods walk to the centre of the camp. Where the cabins stood tall. A vast menagerie of buildings devoted to the gods whose children they house. And speaking of the god's children, I could see demigods of all ages walking about, only giving me the occasional glance.
After a few more minutes of walking we entered what seemed to be a rudimentary medical bay. One of the demigods lifted me up and placed me onto a bed. I could argue that the action was demeaning, but frankly I was too tired to argue.
A kid comes up to me, looking at my body presumably to see if I was injured. Considering that he had blonde hair and blue eyes like I did, and the fact that Observe told me, the kid was most likely my half brother. Man, that's weird to think about.
"The kid should be okay, Chiron" My half-brother, who's apparently named Jamie, said, retrieving something from the cabinet. "All he needs is some Ambrosia and rest." In his hands was an odd golden jelly-like substance. He brought it to my mouth. To his surprise, I took it out of his hands and ate it. It seems that he wasn't aware that I was awake.
Ambrosia… tastes fucking awful. I know it tastes different to everyone, but for me it tastes like… the first food I made for myself, when I moved out of my childhood home. But whilst it may taste like crap, it also made me feel… free.
"Huh. I have never seen anyone have such a weird reaction to Ambrosia like that." Jamie chuckled, as I turned to look at him, he introduced himself, "Ah, I'm Jamie. I'm the Head Councillor of the Apollo Cabin."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Gill" I greet. Rising up a bit from the bed, I take a look around my surroundings. On one side of the bed was Jamie holding a first aid kit, whilst on the other side of the bed was Chiron standing imposingly, though that could just be because he's naturally tall. At the far side of the room were the demigods who had killed Gello. They seemed to be getting checked up by another child of Apollo, though younger than Jamie.
"Gill? I believe your friend said your name was Gilgamesh" Chiron pondered. Oh for fuck's sakes Yurei! Did you really have to tell them my name? I could've totally managed to go through my Camp life without anyone knowing that my name is Gilgamesh.
"I'd… rather you call me Gill" I said, flushed in embarrassment. I really regret making my name Gilgamesh, though I blame it on the Void fucking up my mind.
Chiron and Jamie let out a chuckle, "Ah, you're not the first child to have such an… extravagant name. There have been many mortal parents who desired for their child to have a unique name for a unique child"
Yeah, but those kids were given their name. I chose my own.
"I'd better be going, Chiron. Will's been non-stop asking for lessons" Jamie told Chiron, as he got up from where he was sitting. He then turned to me, "I'll check up on you tomorrow, try not to do anything that needs a lot of energy. Okay?" I nod in response, and Jamie says his goodbyes and leaves the building.
"Now, Gill, I believe that you are well aware of the hidden truth of this world. That the Greek Gods are still alive, and so too are the monsters" Chiron had a very dramatic tone, though I can't blame him. He's said the same speech thousands of times. I'm sure he needs to spice it up every now and then.
Hmm… Why not join him?
"Oh yes, I do." I confirm, "And that the Norse Gods are alive. And the Egyptian. And the Aztecs. There's also the Babylonian ones. And of course since those all exist, the Hindu and Japanese Pantheons also exist. Oh and last, but not least, the Roman Gods also exist via celestial schizophrenia. There's probably a lot more out there as well." Whilst the Aztec and Babylonian Gods hadn't made an appearance in the books yet, Apollo had mentioned them, therefore making them canon.
Man, it sucks I died before Rick Riordan could expand his writing to other mythologies. Sure, there were the Riordan Presents books, but it simply wasn't the same.
Chiron looked at me in shock, and a little fearful. Hmm… Should I tell him the truth? Not the actual truth of me having been reborn and given the power of the Gamer, but the lie I told Halcyon. The lie of me being able to see the future. I mean, Chiron is trustworthy enough to know that I know what happens in the future. Plus, from what his Stat Sheet says, he prioritises Camp Halfblood over Olympus itself, which was odd but heart-warming.
"How do you know this child?" Chiron asks after composing himself, though he still had the hint of a shocked tone in his voice, "Did a god tell you the truth?" Smart question. Making sure he isn't stepping on anyone's toes.
"No Chiron." I shook my head, "How about I give you a hint?" He looked at me wearily, before nodding. I'm sure he's already figured out that I'm nothing like other's of my age. "Okay then. Here it is." I then looked him in the eyes, "A half-blood of the eldest gods, shall reach sixteen against all odds-" Before I could continue, Chiron desperately covered my hand with his mouth, with a small amount of fear in his eyes.
"I do not know how you know the prophecy, but do not utter it again without my permission" He told me with an authoritative tone. "We will talk more about this tomorrow, where you will meet me in the Big House after dinner, child." He then sat down on a bed, far calmer than he was a second ago, "Sorry, for being so serious, Gill. How about we talk about your new life in Camp?"
1 Hour Later…
After a lengthy conversation with Chiron about my schedule at camp, the centaur left the building, presumably to tend to the rest of Camp Halfblood. I looked outside, as the sun began to set upon the camp and night took over the sky. I was finally here.
Sighing, I decided to open the insane amount of notifications I received upon arriving at camp. Fucking house-cleaning. Well, first things first, I had rewards from defeating Gello, despite not landing the final blow. It seems that if my ally isn't a gamer, I even get the reward for them dealing the final blow.
You and 4 allies killed 1 She-Demon
Since your allies are not Gamers, you receive the EXP and rewards they would've gotten.
You have levelled up (19 - 21)!
You have been rewarded with the Sharpshot skill!
You have been rewarded with an Infinity Enchanted Bow!
Huh. Guess I'll be using my Archery skill more. The Bow that I'd been rewarded with was essentially a normal bow that could summon arrows to its string without the archer having the actual arrows. And the Sharpshot skill was a spell that could enhance my aim for 5 seconds. And that time would most likely increase as the skill's level increases.
I also got my rewards for two of my quests.
Quest Completed!
Off to Camp We Go!
It's time to go to the safe haven for the Greek Demigods, Camp Halfblood! Unfortunately, you're in Ohio and there's thousands of monsters looking for Demigod flesh!
Objective: Get to Camp Halfblood
Rewards: EXP, 50 Drachma, $10,000, 75 Stat Points, Cloak of Invisibility, 15 Levels in a Skill of your choice, Seed of Yggdrasil, Swift Boots
Well, I guess I'm rich now. Oh, the things I could do with that much money in my previous life. And here I was, getting money left and right.
Not only did I get so much money, but also 75 whole Stat Points! And I had no idea what to do with them. Where do I put them? Do I specialise in one stat, or spread the points evenly? Ah, to suffer from success.
I also got a free 15 Levels in a skill of my choice. Now, I kinda want to put those levels into either Sword-Fighting or Archery. They were more useful in battle, especially if I ever want to hide my abilities. I think I'll put the levels into Sword-Fighting even if it is one of my highest levelled skills. It's simply more useful to me.
Now, as for the items I received, they were nothing to scoff at. Whilst the Cloak of Invisibility seems to be from the Harry Potter books, it's not the cloak of death that Harry has, but rather a generic invisibility cloak that wasn't unique amongst its kind. However, it would still be very useful for sneaking around.
The Swift Boots were also interesting, though admittedly basic. They were essentially boots that would make me run and walk faster, along with increasing my Agility by 15%. Pretty basic starter gear, and since I had a chestplate already, I only needed a helmet and leggings to complete the armour set.
But the most fascinating item I received was the Seed of Yggdrasil.
Name: Seed of Yggdrasil
Type: Plant
Rank: A
Item Description: This is a seed extracted from one of the many World Trees that exist throughout the multiverse. However, this seed will not sprout a true World Tree, but a tree that will spread all over the land, allowing near instant travel for the one who plants it.
Fast Travel motherfuckers. It's a literal fast travel tree, though it would take a while before I could use it. I really hope it has an accelerated growth time, because from what I know about trees, it takes decades for them to grow fully.
Now, the question is where exactly I could plant it. Ah well, I can decide later, since I also have to settle the rewards I got from Melinoe's Quest.
Quest Completed!
Ghostly Son
In an odd turn of events, the Goddess of Ghosts, Necromancy, and Nightmares, Melinoe, has issued you a quest to save her child.
Objective: Go to the child's house near the Jefferson Hotel in Washington DC and rescue the child, and take him to Camp Halfblood.
Rewards: EXP, Frost Weapon Enchantment, 20 Stat Points, Mist-Manipulation (Level 15)
Damn, even more stat points! And not only that, I had fucking Mist-Manipulation. Man, I could fuck up so many mortals. Hell, I could probably use it on some of the demigods at camp! Perhaps this is what they meant by "Absolute Power corrupts absolutely". If I keep getting more and more power like this, I might get high off it.
As for the Frost Weapon Enchantment, it essentially coated whatever weapon I had with frost, and would deal additional damage. Plus my attacks would be stronger against enemies weak to ice-based attacks. Another attack that'll be useful for my arsenal.
And with all the EXP I got from the quests, I had levelled up from 21 to 24, meaning my total Stat Points was at 120. I can decide where to put them later. Right now, I think I'm just gonna… rest.
1 Day Later…
When I woke up, I hadn't realised an entire day had passed. I was met with the scent of fresh food. It seemed to be barbecued chicken with salad. Frankly, it tasted pretty good. However, my nice meal was interrupted by a surprisingly sneaky child of Melinoe.
"You're awake" Yurei stated, as he popped out next to me. "Chiron told me that you were going to wake up this morning. It's 5pm right now." Is… Is he angry? I think he is.
"Sorry?" I apologise, confused. I noticed that Yurei was wearing fresh new clothes, with the iconic Camp Halfblood t-shirt, and jeans. At his waist, in a scabbard, was Needle which I had given him before fighting Gello. It's nice to know that the sword will be in good hands.
"Be sorry later. Apparently, there is some game we have to join." From behind Yurei, on another bed, is a fresh set of clothes, featuring the orange Camp Halfblood shirt. "We have to join the Hermes kids so we know what we're doing in the game" Ah, he must be talking about Capture the Flag. It makes sense that we'd be with the Hermes cabin since Yurei and I are technically unclaimed.
I got up from the bed, noticing that my body was at complete ease. A normal person would have to rest for weeks. I take the clothes from the other bed, put them on without the need to undress thanks to my powers.
The iconic shirt was surprisingly comfy, and hugged my body, though it wasn't constraining me. Using Observe on it, I could see that it was a mere D rank item. It didn't give any effects, apart from always fitting the wearer. A tad disappointing but beggars can't be choosers.
I looked at Yurei who was emotionless. "We should go," He advised, as he began to walk out of the building. However, I quickly grabbed his shoulder.
"Yurei… are you okay?" I ask with concern. Our eyes meet. His void irises meet my sky blue eyes. There was something behind those eyes of his. An emotion. Anger? No. I'm not sure what it is.
"Yes. I'm fine" He bluntly replies, before walking ahead. There was a cold silence between us. Perhaps he wanted to say something to me, but whatever the case, he wasn't going to tell me today.
As we pass by the main cabins, I see a figure sitting by the campfire that burned in the centre of the cabin area. A child, possibly my age, was tending to the fire, throwing the occasional log to stoke the flames. The child wore a red cloak that covered much of her own features, but I could see flickers of her hair as red as the flames she tended.
I didn't need to use Observe to know who she was. The Lady of the Hearth, and the Goddess of Home. Hestia.
Perhaps I should talk to her sometime. Get a god on my good side.
Regardless, I kept on following Yurei, as we made our way to the North woods, where I could see hordes of kids from different age groups standing in separate groups. They were all decently equipped, though there were many with seemingly old equipment.
Since there were no eyes on me, I decided to turn off the invisibility that was on my armour. Out of thin air appeared a black scaly chest plate that covered my torso and shoulders. Grey boots with black fur lined on top, and on those boots was an insignia of a wing etched into their sides.
On my back was my recently acquired bow, and by my side in a scabbard was Athanatos. It seems that the System has features that allow the user to make sure that their powers are not revealed, including Inventory. I could instantly summon either weapon to my hands without anyone wondering as to how I could do it. It was astoundingly useful.
Yurei leads me to one of the two groups, filled with kids from the Hermes, Ares, Demeter, and Aphrodite Cabins. Of course, there were children of minor gods as well but they were technically part of the Hermes cabin, and I suppose Yurei and I are also part of the Hermes cabin now.
We headed near the middle of the group where two older looking teens, perhaps 17 years old, were talking to each other next to a map. They seemed to be strategizing. One of them looked at Yurei and I, and came up to us. He had a pretty stocky build, reminiscent of a weight-lifter. His armour was pretty bulky and on his back was a large celestial bronze battle axe, though it was pretty simple in nature. Obviously he was the councillor for the Ares cabin.
The other teen followed behind him. She was arguably pretty different from her fellow councillor. She had long blonde hair tied up into a bun, and decently light armour. Though there were any weapons on her back or around her waist, I could see a pair of daggers in pouches by her thighs. Judging by her build, I'd say she was a stealth fighter. And from Observe, she was the Hermes councillor.
"Ah, you're those kids that came in yesterday" The Hermes Councillor said, "Good to see you both made it on time." She looked at both of us analytically, and gave a surprised look when she saw the gear I had.
The Ares councillor looked at Yurei with a hint of disappointment, before turning to me with an appraising grin, "So you're the kid that fought that demon chick yesterday. Zeke said you did a pretty good job. Maybe one day you'll be as good as me!" He let out a hearty chuckle. I suppose he has a higher charisma than average for a reason. It's quite an anomaly to see from an Ares camper.
The Hermes councillor sighs, "Ignore him. His ego is bigger than his axe." She then reaches her hand out to me, "Anyway, my name is Eva, and I'm gonna be your cabin councillor until you kids get determined. The brute next to me is Marc, he's in charge of the Ares cabin."
"And we're the best cabin!" Marc boasted, receiving glares from some of the nearby demigods. "By the way, you punks know what we're doing here?" Yurei shook his head in denial whereas I nodded my own. "Alright well we're gonna be doing this thing called Capture the Flag…" and so he began to explain the rules to Yurei.
With the rules explained, Eva told us where we would be on the battlefield. "To be honest, we don't really know what you kids can do. So right now, we'll put you kids to the side." She points to the map, more specifically at the outskirts of the forest, by a river. It was the most logical thing for them to do after all.
Yurei and I nod, and the child of Melinoe walks away, presumably to get some armour. I really do wonder what's troubling him. I look around my team, using Observe randomly on other demigods. Some of the descriptions of these kids were… troubling. Many of them already had some form of hatred towards the gods, and whilst none actually wanted to start a rebellion or ally with Kronos, there were some who… felt like they were on the edge.
"Hey!" From behind me I hear a voice coming closer. Turning around I could see two kids about my age running towards. It was clear that they were twins, as they both had identical noses, eyes, faces, and even near-identical hair. As soon as they reach me, one of the twins greets me, "Hey! You're that new kid, right? Gill?" Using Observe on them, I learned who they were. Another pair of characters from the books, the Stoll twins.
"Is it true you fought a monster just outside of camp?" The twin on the right, Travis Stoll, asked, "I heard you had to fight a horde of harpies as well!" Shit, are there already rumours about me? That's pretty crazy. I've barely been here for a day and people are already making shit up about me.
The other twin, Conner Stoll, gave a childish grin, "I heard you rode in on the back of a unicorn!"
That statement caused me some confusion, "I know pegasi are a thing, but so are unicorns?" I didn't know unicorns were real or even featured in the Percy Jackson books.
Travis shook his head, "Nah, Connor just saw a book cover that had a unicorn on it. I don't think unicorns actually exist."
Something strange about these twins is that despite their identical outward appearance, their stats were far more different. Whilst both had arguably low Strength (though annoyingly higher than mine), Connor had an abnormally high Agility stat and a somewhat high Charisma stat. On the other hand, whilst Travis had an average Agility and Charisma Stat, his Intelligence and Willpower definitely outshone his brother's.
It was very strange, but I suppose I can't expect them to be the exact same people.
"Come on, Travis!" Connor moans to his brother, "Is it that hard to believe? I mean, pegasuses exist!"
"I think it's pegasi" I corrected, much to the chagrin of the boy.
Connor groans, rolling his eyes, "Gods, you sound like an Athena kid. I'd say you were one if you had grey eyes, but nope, it's just boring blue" Damn. Kids are fucking annoying. What a brat.
"Your eyes are blue too" I point out, causing him to pout. Before he could respond, the hordes of demigods became silent as the sound of hooves clopping on the ground could be heard. I look to the direction of the sound, and see Chiron walking onto a stage.
From behind us I hear another sound, and turning around, I see three kids holding a large banner, which had a golden yellow background, with a caduceus woven into the design. They rushed to the front, where Chiron was, and handed the banner to Eva. It was clearly the Hermes Cabin banner.
And quickly enough, another group of demigods came in, carrying a silk banner, as grey as the eyes of the demigods that carried it. It had a painting of a barn owl above an olive tree on the front. Clearly it was the Athena cabin. They handed the grey banner to a teenager who looked to be about 15. Using Observe on him, I learn that her name is Samuel Mendeleev, a son of Athena. Hmm… Why does his surname seem so familiar?
But what concerned me the most was the sheer fucking size of his intelligence stat. It was even bigger than Zoe's Intelligence stat. I mean, I get that he's a child of Athena, but I never expected his Intelligence stat to be so high. I mean, Marc's Strength stat wasn't that high, and he was meant to be a child of Ares! Perhaps Samuel was simply gifted?
Chiron hammered his hoof on the stone platform, getting everyone's attention. We made brief eye contact, and he gave me a look that reminded me that I had to meet him after this game of Capture the Flag.
"Heroes!" he announced. "You know the rules. The creek is the boundary line. The entire forest is fair game. All magic items are allowed. The banner must be prominently displayed, and have no more than two guards. Prisoners may be disarmed, but may not be bound or gagged. No killing or maiming is allowed. I will serve as referee and battlefield medic. We shall begin in five minutes. If you haven't taken any armour or weapons yet, now is your chance!"
Immediately after his announcement, a surprising number of demigods went to a table full of equipment. I suppose they're kids after all. They tend not to be prepared. With 5 minutes to spare, I looked at the notification I got from the System whilst Chiron was speaking.
Quest added!
Capture the Flag
Win your first game of Capture the Flag!
Objective: Steal the enemy flag and return it to your base.
Rewards: EXP, 30 Stat Points, ?
Huh, it's been a while since I last got a new quest. Though, this one was a little annoying. If I break out of formation, I'd probably seem like a showboater to the other demigods. Ah well, a quest is a quest, and I can sort out the children's feelings another time, quest rewards are more important.
5 Minutes Later…
Forest Creek
After a small walk, Yurei and I were by the creek near the boundaries of the game. When I had arrived at the river, I realised that it was the same place Percy fought Clarisse in the books. Perhaps there was some weird significance in this place, or it's just a coincidence.
Yurei held Needle in his hand, wearing basic looking armour. He didn't bother looking at me, or even acknowledging my presence. Eh, he was probably just being moody.
As the minutes pass by, I keep looking at my quest notification. I wasn't particularly sure as to when I should go after the flag. If I did it right at the beginning, there was a good chance that any fight I entered would alert enemy campers to my position. On the flip side, if I went out too late, I would risk the flag being captured by someone else.
Suddenly, I hear the sound of rustling leaves. Yurei hadn't noticed, but looking at the direction of the sound, I saw two demigods, somewhat older than me. Above them, standing upon a tree was a demigod with a drawn bow. Finally, some action.
It seemed they weren't expecting me to notice, as they didn't move when I summoned a Fireball to my hand. I quickly fired it at the tree branch that the archer was standing upon. Of course I wasn't going to burn some kid. The force of the fireball burnt off part of the branch that connected it to the tree, causing the archer to fall down into the bush.
The archer lets loose a scream as he falls down, though I doubt he was in any mortal danger. His two friends come charging at me. Both had a sword and shield each, but nothing remarkable. Although, their stats were decently above mine.
I take Athantos out and block one of their attacks with it. The other enemy attacked my side, but I easily blocked it with my Guardian Shield. They both take a step back, and take a quick look at my shield.
"The craftsmanship of that shield! I've never seen anything like it!" One of them, named Ford, exclaimed, marvelling at my shield. Mentally opening their stat sheet, I find out that they're both children of Hephaestus. Of course they're gonna be in awe of my shield.
"Something like that looks like it could've been made by father!" The other, named Nikola, grins, "All it needs is some QOL features! Built in Wi-Fi, maybe a clock or radar as well!" Why the fuck would a Shield need Wi-Fi? Don't demigods mess shit up when it comes to Wi-Fi? And I'm not too familiar with technology back in the 2000's but surely there weren't many things that needed Wi-Fi back then, right?
"Hey fellas, eyes are up here" I say, snapping the two out of their discussion, "Aren't we meant to be fighting or something?"
"Yeah, probably, but your shield is so much more interesting" Ford answers, stars in his eyes, "Where on Olympus did you get it?"
I shrug, "I found it on the ground" It was a pretty shit lie, but these kids were way more focused on the shield to care.
A look of shock and horror comes up onto Nikola's face, "What monster would throw such a beauty onto the ground!? I hope they go to Tarturus!" He then looks at the shield once more and gives me a small look of pleading, "Say… Could I hold your shield?"
"What! I wanna hold it!" Ford shouts, glaring at his brother. Hmm… I could use this to my advantage.
"Sure, I'll let you guys look at it for the rest of the game…" I started, causing both children of Hephaestus to light up with joy, "Only if you let me go past you two so I can steal your flag." If I had to guess they were sent through here as some sort of stealth force, to get our flag whilst our main force was distracted with theirs.
The two boys looked at one another, nervous. "I don't know… Samuel would have our heads". Hmm… Are they saying that Samuel would enact violence upon them? Or perhaps simply shout at them? Ah well, I suppose I can find out later.
"You could just tell him I beat you two," I suggested. I mean, I probably could beat them, but I'd rather not have to automatically resort to violence. Plus I should hopefully be able to survive without the shield. It wasn't like this was a death game.
"Fine" Sighs Nikola, "The shield is way cooler than some silly flag". I smile at his decision, and give him the Guardian Shield to which he greedily grabs. Both sons of Hephaestus begin studying the shield, as if the world around them stopped existing.
"I'll be back for it after the game" I tell them, as I begin to walk away from them and towards the direction they came in. Yurei looked at me as I walked, but did nothing. He didn't even bother walking after me. Well, at least he can keep an eye on the children of Hephaestus.
I passed by the archer that I made fall off the tree. Luckily, the fall had knocked him out cold, and hadn't given him any actual injuries. Using Observe on him, I could see that he was a fellow sibling of Apollo. Ah, that'll make things awkward once I get claimed.
When I reach a decent distance away from the creek, I start running to where the enemy flag should. When I met Marc and Eva, I had a glimpse of the map behind them and saw where the other team's flag should be. Luckily it wasn't too far from the creek.
"Hey System, put 30 points into Agility!" I think to myself. Immediately I become faster, running through the woods swiftly to reach the flag. It's crazy how much of a difference 30 stat points could make, and I had plenty of points to spare.
A few minutes pass by and I finally reach a small clearing. Within it was the Athena cabin's banner, guarded by two heavily armoured children of Athena. They wielded a spear and a shield each, and were clearly ready to fight if needed.
I grin to myself. There was no need to fight, if they didn't even know I was here. From my inventory, I take out my newly acquired Cloak of Invisibility. Unlike what was shown in the Harry Potter movies, the Cloak of Invisibility (even if mine is a lesser version of Harry's Cloak) is not in fact a blanket, but an actual hooded cloak that blends my body into the surroundings.
Putting the cloak on, I looked down to where my body should be and found nothing there, which was honestly pretty trippy to look at. Regardless, there was no time to marvel at the wonders of magic, when there was a banner to capture.
Carefully trying to not make a sound, I walked towards the banner, approaching from behind so that the Athena demigods wouldn't have a single chance to see me. In a few seconds I was directly behind, but then I made a near-fatal mistake. I stepped on a fucking twig.
The snap of the twig rang through the clearing, as the two guards spun around to see what made the noise. Confusion appeared on their faces when they saw nothing. "What in Hades… Where did that sound come from?"
The other guard sighs, "Maybe we're just imagining things. This is your fault for getting us on guard duty."
The first guard scoffs, "My fault? Let me remind you that you're the one that bought the beer from the Hermes cabin!" Fascinating, so the Hermes cabin has a contraband trade? I should try and see if I could get some things from them. After all, it's been a very, very long time since I last had beer, and I had Drachma to spare.
"And you're the one that got us caught Chiron!" The other rebutted, and soon enough the two began a full on argument, shouting and practically screaming at one another. As funny as it was, I could recognise an opportunity when I saw it. The two were far too focused on one another to notice the stolen banner in my hands.
I quickly walked away, as the banner couldn't fit under my cloak, and as soon as I was out of sight, I put the cloak and banner back into my inventory. With a maniacal grin on my face, I began running back to where my team's flag was. As soon as the stolen banner arrives at my team's banner, the game will be finished.
As I run through the woods, I hear distant sounds of blades clashing against one another, and then an incredibly loud shout, "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BANNER!". Crap, they must've discovered my thievery. On the bright side, they'll probably leave me alone since I don't have the banner visible.
After running a bit more, I suddenly stop, as an arrow zooms past my face. I look to where it came from and see a girl of golden hair with a drawn bow pointed at me. "Don't move an inch, kid."
"You should watch where you're aiming." I warn, "You nearly shot me." Of course I knew that she was a daughter of Apollo, after all, very few demigods that aren't children of Apollo don't use a bow and arrow. And since she was my half-sibling, I knew that she wouldn't miss unless she wanted to.
"And if you don't answer my question, I won't miss next time" She threatens, her eyes locked upon me, "Now tell me, where is my team's flag?" Hmm… Interesting.
"Why would I know?" I shrug, "I'm 8. Why would they tell me anything? All I was told is to sit still and look pretty by the creek" I gave her my award winning grin, though it seems she was not impressed.
"You may be 8, yet you act more mature than half cabin councillors" Damn. She's pretty smart. Fuck, if an Apollo demigod was this smart, I dread to think how much of my secrets an Athena Cabin member could deduce from a single conversation. "Now, answer my question."
"30 points into Intelligence" I internally command the System. Immediately, the perfect lie came to my mind. "I'm serious. I don't know where the flag is." A look of doubt comes upon her face, to which a near maniacal grin comes onto my face, "Very well, if it'll calm you down, then I swear upon the River Styx that I don't know where your banner is, nor do I know my team's plan to take your flag"
There is a silent pause as she looks at me in horror and shock. "Di Immortales, what in the fuck is wrong you kid!?" She shouts, "Do you know how risky an Oath like that is? Kid, there's being hardcore, and then there's being insane! This is just a game dude!"
A minute passes by, and she keeps on ranting. Seriously, what is it with these kids? Way too focused on their ranting.
As I grew tired of my half-sibling's voice, I decided it was time to leave, though I doubt she'd let me go freely. Leaving only one option. Lucky for me, she was already distracted. In all but a second, I dash to her with Athanatos in hand.
It seemed that she wasn't as distracted as I assumed, as I was met with an arrow firing towards me. However I was ready for the arrow this time, as I blew it away with a Windblast. Shocked by the use of magic, my half-sibling didn't even shoot another arrow. A fatal mistake, as Athanatos's blunt side is put against her throat.
"Oh shit kid. You are taking this way too seriously" She gulps, dropping her bow. I look into her eyes for a second before sighing, taking my sword away from her neck.
"Yeah, you're right" I agree, rubbing my temple, "It's just that I've been out in the wild, constantly fighting, for a long while." It was true. My previous life had very little real danger and I rarely had to fight anything. And then suddenly I'm in a world where monsters want to eat me. I've had to be ready to kill or be killed. But now that I'm in Camp Halfblood, I should chill out a bit.
My half-sibling, who's name is Diane (after taking a look at her stat sheet), gives me a warm smile, and an almost pitying look, "It's alright. You're not the first to go through all that, and I don't think you'll be the last. I should probably head back to my team." She gets up, takes her bow, and begins walking away, "See ya later kid, maybe you'll end up in my cabin" As soon as she goes out of my sight, I let out a chuckle. It seems I had completely gotten away with my deception. It was pretty risky to swear an oath on the Styx, however, I knew that I technically was telling the truth. After all, though I knew that the Banner was in my inventory, I didn't actually know what the inventory was. Was it a pocket dimension only I could access? Perhaps it was simply a feature that disintegrated the item I was putting into it, and then recreating it when I took it out of the inventory. And since I had no idea what exactly happened to the banner when I put it into my inventory, I passed the Oath of Styx.
Regardless, it was time to get back to my team's flag. I take out the enemy banner out of my inventory. I'd rather not have to explain to the camp as to how I could summon the flag out of nowhere. Honestly, using Inventory felt like cheating, but were it not for the quest, I wouldn't have used it in the first place.
As I begin running, my mind trails off to a small point of concern that occurred to me when I looked at Diane's stat sheet. Her stats were a good bit higher than mine, and yet I took her down easily. And now that I think about it, the same could be said for Gello. She should've destroyed me, based on her stats, yet I survived. Hell, even Matthew was far stronger than I back then, yet I managed to drown him.
And that led me to one conclusion. Despite a person or monster's stat, they rarely fight at their max. They only use a fraction of the true power, even if unconsciously. It makes sense. Despite Percy Jackson's immense strength, he rarely shows the same power he had when he fought Akhlys, though we do see it when he's in true danger. And that explains how I was able to beat a lot of people in this world. Just as most people don't fight at their maximum potential unless necessary, conversely do I fight at my maximum all the time unless I forcefully hold back.
Well, that certainly was very good. It definitely made me more powerful right now than I thought I would be. It explains a lot of things though.
Anyway, after a few minutes of running, and also putting a further 30 points into Endurance so I had enough stamina to make the journey, I had reached my team's banner. I held the enemy banner up high enough for my teammates to notice me.
"Hey… Isn't that the new kid?" One of the Ares kids that were guarding my team's banner questioned, before seeing the banner I was holding "Wait… THAT'S THE ATHENA CABIN'S BANNER!"
As soon as he said that, the other guard also exclaimed, "What!? HOW?! That wasn't the plan we were told! Did Eva and Marc change it up at the last second?"
The first guard grabbed a horn that was tied to his belt, and raised to his mouth. I think I saw one with the Athena cabin guards as well. The demigod blew into the horn, and a loud bellow rang across the forest.
As I walked closer, I could hear the sounds of tons of demigods coming closer and closer. I guess the horn was a signal that the game had ended. Perhaps the other team's horn made a different sound that signified their team winning.
I was a little worried as to whether Eva or Marc would get annoyed that I deviated from their strategy, so I put in 30 stat points into Charisma, exhausting the last of my Stat Points. One may argue that it was a waste, but I should be able to get some points in the future, one way or another.
"Holy crap kid!" Speaking of the two, Eve and Marc both come into the clearing. And surprisingly, both had grins on their faces, "Not even your first day and you're already the MVP!"
Marc slaps my back, nearly knocking me over, "Haha! Man, I hope you're claimed by Ares. It'd suck if we end up going against each other in the future… Though it'd definitely be an interesting fight."
Eva gave a light karate chop on Marc's head, "You're not fighting 8 year olds." She then turned to me, "Good job. I wasn't actually sure if our little plan would actually work. How'd you get the flag without anyone noticing?"
Tell her the truth… or lie? What should I do?
"I got lost" I answer simply. A shit lie, but it got the message across that I'd rather not answer the question. "Aren't you mad that I didn't follow your plan?"
Eva laughs, "Do I look like I have grey eyes? I don't care as long as it gets the job done. Though I wouldn't try it on an Athena kid, they do love their plans" Well, that's quite fortunate for me. In fact, it seems that I've made a couple of new friends in camp.
From behind me, I feel a tap on my back. It was the two Hephaestus kids that I met at the creek. And they were holding my shield, "Hey, uh thanks for letting us look at your shield" The one called Nikola said, handing me back the Guardian Shield. Fortunately enough, it was retracted meaning it wouldn't draw any unwanted attention.
"It's truly a work of art!" Ford exclaims, a hint of sadness in his eyes. Probably because he had to say goodbye to it. "Is there… a chance that we could study it some other time?" Both boys looked at me pleadingly.
"Yeah sure" I answered nonchalantly. I mean, it wasn't any skin off my back, nor was it any hassle. And I wasn't some sort of asshole to use it as some sort of leverage over a couple of kids. And considering how both kids lit up with joy, it was worth it.
"Thank you so much!" Ford says with glee, "Now I think Samuel wants to talk to us"
"His nagging will be worth it" Nikola responds, still grinning. The two walk away to where the Athena kids were standing. I could see Samuel looking at me analytically. I wonder what he's thinking exactly.
"Well done, demigods!" I turn around and see Chiron to the view of everyone. "A fantastic job from everyone, and we only had ONE maiming happen today." I could see everyone glancing at the Ares Cabin, with Marc rubbing the back of his head sheepishly and Eva facepalming. I wonder if the two are dating, though their Stat Sheet doesn't indicate as such. "And a good job to our newest addition to camp, Gilgamesh Ashford for being the one to steal the flag and without any casualties." Now it was my turn to be stared at. Some were stares of confusion, others were of annoyance or anger. At the very least, everyone at camp was well aware of my existence.
"Now," Chiron continued, taking back the attention, "I believe it is time to officially declare the winner of tonight's Capture the Flag, the HERMES CABI-'' However Chiron stopped mid-sentence as his focus turned to me. And so did the eyes of everyone. They were all staring at me… or rather above me.
I looked up, and saw it. Almost like a hologram, it shined bright against the night sky. A glowing yellow symbol of the sun. Holy shit.
In almost an instant the entire camp was kneeling to me, as Chiron spoke morosely, "Hail Gilgamesh Ashford, Son of Apollo, the Sun God, Lord of Light, Master of Song."
I had been claimed.
Author's Notes: Hey guys, it's been a long time since I last posted. Sorry! Unfortunately, there are two reasons why it's been a while since I last posted. Firstly, I have university exams which I've been studying, which has been cutting into my free time and therefore my writing time.
And the second reason is simple. I'm part of the infamous Gen Z, and thus my attention span if fucked. Whenever I start writing, I immediately get distracted. Fortunately I have found a solution for this! The power of split screen has solved this! One side, I have google docs open, where I write this fic. On the other side of my laptop is One Piece, dubbed so I don't have to focus on subs. This has shockingly fixed my issue. Hopefully I can upload more chapters.
I'd also like to thank you all for the support you've shown this fic, from the reviews to following and favoriting, it's been awesome. Thanks!
