With the spare map in hand, Hyness led Vesa, Kirby, Elfilin, Bandee, Meta Knight, King Dedede and the Mage Sisters down the path. Throughout the journey, Vesa took in the scenery and took note of the unique creatures which passed by. Vesa leaned onto Zan as she did as much as she could to catch up with the others. Along the way, they stopped at a fork in the road. King Dedede led Bandee, Meta Knight and the Waddle Dee servants down one path which probably led to his castle. After Kirby waved goodbye, the others took the other path.
When they stopped at another fork in the road, Kirby spotted his house at a distance. He turned and waved his arm.
"Poyo!"
"Bye, Kirby," Elfilin waved back, "I'll see you tomorrow!"
"Take care," Vesa added.
Kirby sprinted down the left path, so Hyness led Vesa, Elfilin and the Mage Sisters down the other path. A few hours later, they arrived mere meters before a peculiar tower. Vesa tilted her gaze upwards as she examined their destination from a distance. This tower seemed like one that would be found in a fantasy novel, standing up to four stories tall and extending as wide as a normal house. Elfilin stared in awe as he perched on Vesa's shoulder.
"Such a beautiful place," Elfilin chirped, "I wonder what kind of amazing things lie there."
Vesa nodded and scritched behind the small chinchilla's ear. Her eyes focused on Hyness.
"Is there a place where I sleep?" she asked.
"We can set up another room," Flamberge suggested, "we'll need to make two rooms, probably…unless you plan to share it with Elfilis?"
Vesa thought over the question as she adjusted the strap of her backpack.
"Personally," Vesa said, "I would love it if I could have a room across from Elfilis's."
"Oh," Flamberge prattled on, "well, that works too, I guess. I just thou—"
Fransisca covered her fiery sister's mouth with a gloved hand. Flamberge bit her.
"Ow!"
"What was that for?!" Flamberge demanded.
Flamberge tackled Fransisca. Zan sweated nervously as Hyness ushered her and Vesa inside. The lightning mage took note as the human and Elfilin exchanged confused looks.
"How often does that happen?" Vesa blurted.
"Often," Zan answered, "we're all warriors and siblings here."
Vesa sighed and took a few steps through the foyer. In a way, it felt larger on the inside than the outside. The foyer branched off in several different directions. She took note of a staircase which likely led to a lower level.
"I," Vesa stammered, "I think I'm going to need a map for this place."
Elfilin hopped off Vesa's shoulder and floated around.
"Flamberge burned all the maps accidentally, Francisca enjoys egging her on," Zan sighed, "we might have a copy in the library since Flamberge isn't allowed in there without supervision anymore."
The small chinchilla floated over to the lightning mage.
"And where is this library?" Elfilin clamored.
"It's in the lower levels," Zan answered, "on the left is where our rooms are. Each room over there has a bathroom and shower since Flamberge used to use all the hot water. Francisca kept freezing the water so no one else could use it, and anyone who touches anything I touch typically gets a bad static shock, so now we have our own showers. On the right is the kitchen and also the living room and dining room. Downstairs is the basement, the library, the bottomless pit, and the as of yet unused dungeon. We would have a pool if Francisca didn't stop freezing it…"
"To be fair, dear," Hyness shrugged, "you are an electrical hazard as well, so she isn't the only reason."
Zan facepalmed.
"Upstairs is father's study," Zan continued, "and likely before long, Elfilis would have their own study. Outside, there is a large area for training out back."
"Thank you," Vesa smiled, "I'll see if there's a room available."
Vesa turned towards the leftmost staircase.
"Hold on," Zan paused, "we'll add one for you in a bit. Right now, we should go find Elfilis, they might be here somewhere."
Vesa approached Zan as Elfilin perched on top of the lightning mage's head. She led Vesa down the staircase. Vesa thought it would be better to not keep the library a flight of stairs away from the study, but then realized the mages could just teleport whatever book they needed to them and send it away when they were done. Vesa followed Zan to the bottom of the stairs and down the hall.
They set foot in a large library. Most of the shelves were empty, unfortunately, but there was plenty of room for more books. She remembered this was similar to the library Elfilis showed her in their memory. Elfilin floated over to the table and perched at the edge. Vesa began exploring the library and taking in the surroundings. When she tilted her head upwards to observe the higher two floors, she wondered if there was a staircase.
Vesa ruffled the top of Elfilin's head before she climbed the nearest stairs and made her way to the second floor. She spotted Elfilis as they were in the middle of sulking and yet writing in a blank book, presumably from memory. She let out a soft sigh of relief. The ultimate life-form shot a brief glance at her and drooped their ears in embarrassment. Vesa didn't say much as she walked over to the table and sat down across from Elfilis.
"Hey," she said, "how are you doing?"
"I'm all right," Elfilis told her, "it reminds me of home."
Vesa smiled softly as she shifted her gaze to the single notebook to her right. Soon enough, an idea popped into her head.
"Uhm," Vesa asked, "is there a blank book available?"
"Here," Elfilis offered, "I'll make one for you."
Elfilis didn't hesitate to conjure an empty book and hand it to Vesa.
"Thanks!" Vesa smiled.
Snatching a pencil, eraser and pen, Vesa began writing her childhood bedtime story 'The Elfin Seraph in the Dew Garden'. Fortunately for her, her father recited this story to her so many times she committed the entire story—every single word—to memory. As she wrote out each word in pencil, she visualized the story playing out in her head. By the time she finished writing out the story an hour later, Vesa went back to finalizing the words in ink, taking her another hour. At that point, Elfilis completed three books so far.
Glancing out the window, Vesa noticed the brawl between Flamberge and Fransisca already came to a close with the fire mage unconscious. She closed the book she completed and wrote the title.
"I wonder if this library has a children's section," Vesa said, "after all, this story I still remembered was quite popular with kids back in Ioskaria."
"Not really," Elfilis shrugged, "this is a library for magical study. Although, I believe there is a fictional section."
"Thanks," Vesa nodded, "it'll do."
Vesa picked up the book and stood from the table. She descended to the lower level and located the shelf labeled "Fiction" near the entrance. As she shelved the book, Elfilin appeared by her side which caught her attention.
"Uh," Vesa blurted, "hi there."
Elfilin examined the book on the shelf before locking eyes onto Vesa's.
"Is that a story you made?" Elfilin asked her.
"It's a bedtime story I remember from my childhood," Vesa shrugged.
Vesa's eyes wandered until she located Zan. It didn't take long before the lightning mage turned around and locked eyes onto the human.
"I've been meaning to ask," Zan asked her, "what exactly is your relationship with my sibling?"
Vesa took a moment to think over the question while Elfilin gave her a puzzled look.
"Uhh," Vesa stammered, casually fluttering her left hand, "we're just friends, really."
"You sure?" Zan teased, "that reaction doesn't sound confident."
Vesa couldn't help but huff.
"I'm sure of it," Vesa insisted, "I don't think we're ready for anything serious yet!"
"Take it easy," Zan prattled on, "I'm just curious."
Vesa let out an exasperated sigh before she turned to climb the stairs, leaving a confused Elfilin. Reaching the second floor, she sat down across from Elfilis.
"So," Elfilis asked her, "how are you finding the tower? It seems they did their best to make it as close to our old one as possible."
"I don't think I've seen it in its entirety yet," Vesa shrugged, "but it kinda feels surreal."
"Well," Elfilis said, "exploring it all may take a while after I install the hidden passageways I remember being here. Since father hasn't added them, I'm not sure he knew of them. I'll need to ensure they're placed back where they were."
Vesa made a brief glance at the stack of books next to Elfilis. Carefully, she plucked one out and began reading its contents. The title on the cover read "An Introduction to Magic and Magical Theory". Initially, she couldn't understand the written language. But then, the text seemed to automatically translate itself, the ink on the page wriggling and moving until it appeared in the alphabet she was most familiar with. From there, she studied the contents between turning the page. From what she could gather, it contained instructions on beginner level magic. Part of her wondered if Elfilis made it so she could develop some sort of magic talent.
Maybe save that thought for later. Having read the last page, Vesa set aside the book.
"Elfilis?"
Elfilis focused their eyes on her as they set their book aside.
"Yes?"
Vesa took a deep breath.
"I…I know I should be happy I got to see Popstar for myself," she told him, "it's just there's probably so much to explore here, I think."
Vesa made a brief glance out the window in a moment of silence.
"In the meantime," she continued, "I'm wondering if your dad would be ok if I could settle here. Is it ok if I had my own bedroom, across from yours?"
"I don't mind," Elfilis replied, "I doubt he will, either. Expanding space shouldn't be a huge issue here."
Vesa smiled as she grasped Elfilis's hand.
"Thank you, it's so kind of you!"
"Oh, it's no problem," Elfilis blushed, "mage towers are easy to modify."
Vesa softly closed her eyes and tilted her head to the side.
"Maybe sometime," Vesa added, "we could both check out plenty of places Popstar has to offer? When you're ready, that is?"
"That sounds wonderful," Elfilis smiled, their tail swaying happily, "sure."
All the while, Elfilin felt his stomach growling. He flew up to the second floor and perched on the table, catching Elfilis and Vesa's attention.
"Elfilin?" Vesa paused.
"When's lunch?" Elfilin clamored, "I'm getting hungry."
"I'm uncertain," Elfilis shrugged, "I only just returned…and this planet does not have the same lunar or solar cycle as my home planet did."
Elfilin made a glance out the window while Vesa withdrew her hand and searched for a clock. The small chinchilla and the human spotted a clock on a nearby wall.
"Well," Vesa mused, "Elfilin does have a point. I might as well get something to eat, too."
"I don't see why Elfilin even needs to consume food," Elfilin paused, "he can photosynthesize just fine, I would hope."
Elfilis and Elfilin exchanged glances.
"You can," Elfilis mentioned, "can't you?"
Elfilin blushed and stammered nervously.
"I don't know how," Elfilin blurted.
Elfilis closed their eyes.
"It's supposed to be instinctual," Elfilis explained, "but it seems that much of that biological information is missing from you. Since I consider you my brother now…"
Elfilis reached out and tapped Elfilin on the forehead, passing some of their DNA to him. The small chinchilla could feel a little stronger now.
"Uhh, thanks, brother?" Elfilin said, "you're welcome to join us for lunch."
"I will join you shortly," Elfilis nodded.
Elfilin perched on Elfilis's shoulder while Vesa stood from her chair. The ultimate life-form glanced over at their new younger brother curiously. Still, Elfilis and Vesa descended the staircase and left the library. After returning to the foyer, they made their way to the dining hall, where the Mage Sisters were also serving themselves some lunch. While Elfilis went for something as simple as an apple, Vesa and Elfilin served themselves varied meals before the three sat down across the mage trio.
Vesa felt right at home.
