Technically, the in-game lore refers to it as a golem, it said so on the 'Dirt-Stained Skirt' item description. Dirt doll is a forum meme.

After three games of trying to Link the Fire, the Abyss Watchers discovered the power of blood, leading to the creation of a Painted World that eventually grew up to be the land of Ashina and the power of immortality. And in the European section of that world is where Fortune Lover is set! Why else would the Armored Foreigner boss have the exact same armor as the statues in the hallway of the Claes estate? Then Maria's descendant grows up to found Raven's Nest, because of the Secret Family Cookie Recipe. It's all in the lore!
