I don't own Twilight. What I own is my character's behavior, personality, background, and the plot of the story.

Author's note at the end of the chapter.

If Edward notices anything off about Bella these days, he doesn't let on. A month, and then another pass. He continues to work as usual and starts to frequently hang out with Maya. What starts out as once a week ends in them hanging out four and five days a week. She is funny, loud, unreserved and always manages to get him out of any funk he is feeling at any moment. If he wasn't so in love with Bella, he would totally love her. She is nothing like he has ever seen, and he likes that.

She always manages to get him to leave the house. She even manages to drag him to the bar near her apartment which is how he spends this Sunday night. That said he keeps his buddies up. He busies himself with a mocktail and no matter how much Maya mocks him for the pink frilly drink with the umbrella, he doesn't budge.

"I just don't believe that you were an alcoholic," she tells him leaning back and giving him a one-over.

"What is that supposed to mean? Does an alcoholic have AA written on their forehead?" He asks her mockingly.

Maya hiccups and tells him, "You," then pauses to point at him emphasizing her words, "Have too much control around alcohol to claim that you struggled with it."

Edward shrugs then tells her, "Mind over matter I guess." He himself is still surprised and astounded by his own progress. For someone who struggled heavily at the beginning, he isn't even tempted by alcohol anymore. Maybe it's the realization that at the first sip of alcohol, Bella and Cece will be out of his life, or maybe it's his self-preservation finally kicking in.

She giggles at him then abruptly stops and asks him, "Do you know what I think?"

He shakes his head. "I think that you secretly drink. That is why you are so in control all the time," she yells the last part and that is when he knows that she is too drunk.

"You have had enough today. Come on. Let me take you home," he tells her standing up and waiting for her to do so too. She just blinks at him and smiles lazily without getting up. He figures out that he needs to help her.

He holds her hand and pulls her up but she refuses to get up and and whines, "I don't wanna. I wanna keep drinking. Home is no fun."

"Maya," He tells her in a warning tone.

She shakes her head and mutters some unintelligible things. "You can complain all you want but you are going home," he mutters frustrated with her.

"I don't want to," she mutters and stomps her feet.

"Fuck! What did I get myself into?" He mutters to himself then tells her, "You are going home and that's final."

It seems that his order was louder than intended as immediately a guy pokes him roughly in the back and tells him, "The lady said her word."

Edward turns around with a scowl on his face and finds a guy four inches taller than his glaring down at him. The guy would give Marco and Emmet combined a run for their money, but Edward doesn't let the guy's intimidating figure get to him and replies, "This is between me and my friend."

"Said friend doesn't want to leave with you," he tells Edward gruffly then turns to Maya and tells her, "How about I show some good time sugar."

Edward fights the urge to vomit at what he just heard and turns around expecting that the guy elicited the same reaction in her, but to his surprise, it's quite the opposite. Maya eyes him up and down with hooded eyes in interest.

"Maya, you're drunk. Let's go home," he tells her hoping that she will listen to the urgency in his voice and heed his warning.

To his shock, she tells him, "He sounds fun," still looking at the guy.

Having had enough, he takes her hand and puts his other one on her back as he tells her, "You are drunk and you don't know what you are doing. You will thank me," but before he can finish his sentence, a fist out of nowhere flies into his face.

For a second he feels numb, then all at once, pain explodes in the right side of his face and he finds himself losing his balance.

Seconds pass at the speed of hours as he feels himself falling to the ground. "Edward are you okay?" He hears a voice whimper in fear.

He tries to open his eyes but even more pain splashes his left side. He manages to finally open his right one to find Maya staring down at him with watery eyes.

"I think I need the hospital," he tells her but the words don't come out correctly as part of his lips are in too much pain to function properly.

Thankfully, Maya understand and tells him, "I will take you I promise." Then she turns to the guy and starts yelling at him for hitting her friend. He tells her to let it go, but she doesn't seem to hear him, so he pulls at her pants.

She gets the message and slowly helps him up, suddenly having the balance of a sober person. "You are drunk. How did you help me stand?" He asks her as they make their way out of the bar and into the street.

She giggles then tells him, "Silly Edward, I can handle my alcohol better than everyone I know."

She makes a move to open her car but he tells her, "Cab, let's hail a cab."

She rolls her eyes at him but doesn't argue with him and leads him to a cab that just dropped a couple on the opposite side of the road.

Two hours later, Edward finds himself being dropped off at Bella's place by Maya and one of her colleagues. He waves at her from the door and then uses the spare key Bella gave him for emergencies and tiptoes so he won't wake anyone at home, but it's all for nothing as he finds an awake Bella waiting for him in the living room and a digital camera blinking 1:20 am spelling trouble for him.
