I don't own twilight. What I own is my character's behavior, personality, background, and plot of my story.
Author's Note at the end.
Bella and Seth run into the reception area of the hospital and then ask for Edward's room and whentr nurse tells them that his family are waiting in a private wing, Bella mutters under her breath, "Of course they would."
"You have known the Cullens since you were 19, are you really surprised? You should be used to it," Seth tells her.
She steps into the elevator after him and then replies, "I will never be comfortable with this level of wealth flaunting when there are people dying."
"It's sad, isn't it? Many people can't afford to get into a hospital room and some are booking private rooms so they can wait away from normal people," he tells her. She sighs loudly and nods her head. She never grew up poor. They always had more than they needed. Her father paid for part of her college tuition and her scholarship paid for the rest. She is privileged. She knows that, but she always saw that as nothing more a privilege. The Cullens see it as a right. Their privilege is something they are entitled for and thus, they aren't obliged, not by their morals, or guilt, to help those with less.
Once the elevator stops, they step out of it and walk to the private room the Cullens are in. Seth opens the door and they are greeted by the sight of multiple couches, the chants of the commentator of a football game coming from a huge TV, two mini-fridges, and the embracing scent of Clementine. Bella notices then that while she was busy looking around the room, everyone noticed her entrance.
Before Bella has the chance to open her mouth, Alice jumps out of her seat and almost slaps her not for Seth's quick reaction. "Alice what the hell is wrong with you?" Seth exclaims standing in front of Bella and holding Alice in front of him.
"What is she doing here?" Alice demands angrily.
"She is here because like me she is worried about Edward and wants to make sure he was okay," Seth answers back.
Alice glares at Seth as she demands, "Unhand me."
"Not until you promise to not touch Bella," Seth snaps back.
"Fine," Alice huffs which prompts Seth to let her go.
Alice takes two steps backward before she crosses her arms and tells Seth, "I think I speak for everyone when I say that she is unwelcome here."
Bella looks at the faces of the people of the room and realizes that they won't stop Alice. They just won't. It shouldn't come as a surprise to her. They never stopped Edward from hurting her. Why would they step in now? Alice is their daughter. Whatever she wants happens just like whatever Edward wants happens. Hot lava bubbles inside of her. She is sick and tired of their shit. They don't get to walk all over her and get away with it.
"I came because I wanted to let Edward know that I am blocking him, so next time he wants to send a scuicide note to someone, he is better send it to someone else," she states then pauses to look them over and then finishes, "But that's okay. I am sure Seth can deliver the message efficiently."
She doesn't bother to look Rosalie's way before she spins around. Rosalie has stopped being an important friend to her a long time ago.
"Now wait a minute," she hears before she feels a hand wrap around her arm and tries to yank her back. Before she has the time to think, she spins around and a resounding smack echoes around the room.
"Don't you ever even think of touching me like that again, you get me?" Bella demands while glaring at an Alice that is touching her red cheek.
"What the hell Bella?" Jasper exclaims walking to her. Seth steps in and stands in front of her as a sign of alliance.
Alice who has Jasper's arm around her shoulders loudly demands, "On top of everything you have done, you assualt me?"
Bella barks a loud laugh and then replies humorlessly, "What did I do?"
Alice lungs at Bella but is stopped by Jasper who holds her back as she yells, "You destroyed him. You broke him. You left him and disappeared only to show up with a husband and a child in tow. You kept toying with him, giving him hope that you will be with him, and when he realized that it's not a possibility he killed himself."
Bella laughs at Alice's nonsense which prompts Alice to reply, "Of course you laugh. You are a heartless bitch. What would you know about love."
"I know the people I love very well," Bella tells her pausing for a second before she continues, "That's not something you have and it shows with the fanfiction you just made about him."
It seems like what she just said hit a nerve with Esme as she interjects, "Now Bella, I don't agree with how Alice is behaving, but we both know that's why Edward committed suicide. Let's call a spade a spade."
"So you are saying that it's my fault that he committed suicide?" Bella questions turning her anger at Esme.
"Of course not sweetie. Your breaking up with him is what caused him to commit suicide," Esme states gently trying to placate her.
"So you are saying that I shouldn't have broken up with him?" Bella questions quietly.
Bella's stomach turns at Esma's forced sympathetic smile before she is told, "All I am saying is that you had a beautiful thing together and maybe you should have handled it with more care."
"Mom!" Emmett exclaims, "Bella had every right right to break up with him. She didn't owe him the rest of her life," he continues.
Esma glances dismissively at Emmet before she states, "I am just saying that Edward loved her and she should have been more responsible with his heart."
Bella stares into the faces of everyone in the room and for the second time she is disappointed. She doesn't know why she expected better. When have the Cullens not disappointed her?
Never, they always under deliver.
Bella turns back to Esma and asks her, "You want to talk about responsibility? Let's talk about responsibility. Let's talk about the fact that you failed your responsibilities as a mother. Every time you let him get his way, spoiled him, told him that he could have anything he wanted, and coddled him, you failed him as a mother."
"Let's talk about the responsibility of everyone in this room," Bella states pausing to look at everyone in the room before continuing, "You all watched as he mistreated me. I spoke to many of you seeking advice on how to deal with him, not a single one of you got involved or tried to talk some sense into him. I didn't behave irresponsibly. I simply chose to abstain from a responsibility I never consented to having in the first place."
The silence echoes off the walls of the room as everyone looks at the ground in shame, but not Alice. Never Alice, she isn't one to have shame or stay silent for long.
"No one forced you to date him or stay with him. You chose that all on your own," Alice rebuttals.
Bella smirks before telling her, "See? You do agree that I have the right to leave."
"No I don't. I just think it's not fair to blame us for something you chose to be a part of," Alice back peddles defensively.
"I see. I have no right to be unhappy with your brother's abusive behavior cause I chose him and thus I can't expect you to try to stop his abuse, and I don't have the right to leave him. Did I get that correct?" Bella ponders loudly.
Alice's silence answers her. Alice is a lost cause. She will never change. She is correct and the entirety of the human race is in the wrong.
She turns to look at Esma and tells her softly, "I was the one that got him to talk to you after years of him refusing to. I was there for you when you needed me even though I didn't know you. Why couldn't you protect me when I needed your protection?"
Bella asks her the question she has been wanting to ask for years. Edward's abuse was never as hurtful as Esma's betrayal. Bella saw in her the mother she never had. Too bad that she showed her the mother she should never have.
Bella's pleading with Esma with her eyes is cut short when Alice interjects, "No one asked you to. You did this out of your own accord."
"It's called having fucking decency, but what would you know about that," Bella snaps at Alice.
If Alice was impacted by what Bella said, she doesn't show and as Bella sighs in exhaustion, she tells them her epiphany, "Listen, I understand that you people don't give a fuck about me, and I am fine with that. What I am not fine with is blaming me for his committing suicide. His action had everything to do with his choice."
Emmett automatically asks, "Do you know what triggered him to do that?"
She nods her head as she looks at her feet and tells them, "A couple of months before we broke up, he dragged me angrily from a party while drunk. I tried to get him to let me drive but he was too angry and wouldn't let me. That night he hit someone. I called the police, removed the body off the street, drove us home that night, and told him it was just a nightmare the next day. In the suicide note he left me, he said that he remembered what happened and couldn't live with himself."
She looks up to find shock and disbelief coloring the faces staring at her. "You are lying," Carlilse mutters speaking for the first time since her entrance.
"Am I?" she asks staring blankly at him.
She knows the exact moment it dawns on him that she is telling the truth by the way he mutters, "Oh God," and the hand he uses to seek out the chair behind him that he falls into.
Alice opens her mouth to speak, but Bella cuts her off knowing what she will say. "Dont you dare ask me why I didn't drive instead of him. You never dealt with a drunk angry Edward. I did."
"You should have," Alice states the wind out of her argument.
"Will, excuse me for thinking I don't want him to punch me when I let him drive," Bella exclaims angryly.
Alice just glares at her. "See? This is what I am talking about. You are still being angry at me instead of being angry at Edward," Bella pauses to look at everyone then continues, "This coddling. This refusal to hold him accountable to his action is why he did the shit he did. You never make him face the consequences of his action and bail him out no matter what he does. You will continue to blame everyone and anyone for his action but him. No matter what he does, there is always an excuse. That is why when he was abusing me, none of you did anything. You shamed me for staying and blamed my behavior for his abuse. Edward is never held accountable. If he murders someone, it's the knife's fault. If he commits suicide, it's the pills fault. I bet that one of you here is thinking that car manufacturing should include a system that senses when a driver is drunk and not let him drive."
By the look on Carlilse's face, she hit the nail in the coffin with her last statement.
Rubbing her face in frustration, Bella decides to leave, but not before telling them, "When he wakes up, I want you to tell him to leave me and my daughter alone. I don't him anywhere near us. You owe me to do that. I have done so much for you, the least you can do is get him to leave us alone. That's fucking decency. My daughter has a great father in her life. She doesn't need anyone coming in and demanding rights. Biology means shit and the two of you," she pauses to point at Esme and Carlisle, "Know this the most. I want my daughter to be healthy, happy and mentally stable. That's not happening if Edward is part of her life. You failed at raising you son, I am not failing at raising my daughter."
Then with a final look at everyone in the room, she turns around and leaves.
Hello lovely people,
I am editing this having slept a grand total of three hours, so if you notice any mistakes, let me know and I will edit them.
I hope you found reading this chapter cathartic like I did. I know some might criticize Bella for not being more amendable, but honestly, she is done and I am not about to force my character to do something that does not work for her. I hope it helped you understand Edward more too.
