Chapter 3
Charlie Morningstar had been looking up at the skies of Pentagram City, looking disgruntled. Things were slow at the hotel. It hadn't been opened yet and preparations for opening night were slow.
'I just don't get it anymore...' Charlie thought. 'I only want to give people a second chance and make Hell a better place, yet, everywhere I look is just opposition.'
She looked down to see her father's palace, sitting perfectly in Lu Lu World, the amusement park that her father built in an attempt to (supposedly) replicate the Garden of Eden, the place where her father met her mother (at least that's what her mother told her).
'Especially from my own dad...' Charlie thought. 'To him, I'm nothing but some disappointment...'
She sighed. She turned around and went towards the door.
"If only there were more people who would see things my way..." Charlie said.
Little did she know that those people were coming this way.
Emile, Ezekiel, and Molly were down on the ground in Hell, staring down at a building that had several neon signs. There are so many things attached to the building. A blimp, a little tower, a merry-go-round, and an old ship. The big sign reads Hazbin Hotel. Emile felt uneasy being here. Hell didn't look as untamed and terrifying as the Bible makes it out to be. Hell looked more like Las Vegas. Of course, he would know this since he came here only one year ago. He looked at Molly and she looked anxious. He knew she had siblings, both of which have definitely fallen to Hell. But she was more worried about the one brother she cared about, her twin brother who goes by the name of Anthony. He looked at Ezekiel and he could tell that he hated being here. Emile could understand why.
Hell's atmosphere is different from Heaven's. The air here is hard to breathe at first and one becomes nauseous within seconds. But once one gets used to it, it's like breathing fresh air.
That and there was so much red.
How can Hell have such a huge obsession over the color red or just about any color remotely related to red?
"Are we really going to do this?" Ezekiel asked. "Do you have any idea what would happen if we were to be caught down here?"
"Oh come on Zeke, we're just here to talk to our little Disney Princess," Molly said. "It's not like we're doing anything bad here."
"If we get caught, this could turn into a—"
"International incident?" Emile asks.
Ezekiel squints his eyes.
"Something like that," Ezekiel said.
He sighed. "For once, I wish you two could take this seriously."
The trio went over to the door. Emile steeled himself and took a deep breath. Molly was stretching all her limbs while Ezekiel pulled out a scythe, just in case things go south. Emile knocked on the door.
...
...
Nothing.
He knocks on the door again.
"Is she out?" Molly asked.
"Probably," Ezekiel said.
Emile knocks on the door again.
—
Charlie went downstairs and saw mostly everyone looking at the door. She could hear it being knocked.
"I'll get it," Charlie said.
She went over to the door and opened it. She pulls the door to see a halo over the head of a albino snake-like humanoid.
Wait...
A halo...
...
...
Within a millisecond, she immediately felt her heart momentarily seize up, just as the humanoid began to speak.
"He—"
She slammed the door and looked to the side. She opened it again. She saw the humanoid, no—the angel—again.
"Hell—"
She closed it again and opened it again.
"Hello—"
She tries to close it, but the angel caught the door in time.
"Can I speak now?" The angel asked.
"Uh..." Charlie's eyes went everywhere before focusing on the angel. "You... may?"
"Agent Pale Snake, at your service!" The Angel introduced himself. "And these are my friends, Ezekiel and Molly! Come on guys introduce yourselves!"
She saw two more angels flanking this "Pale Snake" person. One angel looked... awfully familiar to Angel Dust with all those spider-like features like extra limbs, extra eye spots, and a fluffy chest. The other angel had black hair and didn't seem that much interested in talking to her.
"Well... um... I'm—"
"Princess Charlie, right?" The spider angel asked.
"Yes..." Charlie said. "Why do you ask?"
Pale Snake clears his throat.
"We're here on orders to discuss a kind of deal between you and all of Heaven considering the Hotel," Ezekiel said. "Not that you'd actually would want to talk to us about it—"
Charlie gasped and started to smile. 'Finally! The people I've been waiting for!'
"Come on in!" Charlie said, throwing the door open for them to enter.
Emile gave Ezekiel a smug look, only for the angel to roll his eyes.
"I knew she'd let us in if you let me handle it," Emile said.
"Don't press it," Ezekiel said. "We don't know how her staff might take it."
Emile walked in through the front door...
... only to find someone charging at him with a spear.
His life and his afterlife flashed right before his eyes.
Just then, the spear's tip was just an inch away from his neck. He saw a girl that was about a foot shorter than him with only one eye. She had moth-like characteristics that were prominent in her eyelashes. There was an eye patch over her left eye and there was a black blade that was inches away from her neck. Multiple laser sights were aimed at him. Charlie then stepped in.
"Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Guys, calm down!" Charlie said.
"Charlie! They're angels! You can't possibly trust them!" The moth girl said. "Not after all the exterminations that had been happening since forever!"
"Put it down," Ezekiel said. "Or else."
"Or else what, pendejo? You're gonna kill me?" Vaggie asks.
"Back off, cagna! You're not hurting my boo!" Molly cursed in Italian, aiming all four of her tommy guns at the moth girl.
"Molly?" A male voice spoke.
Emile caught sight of a spider humanoid, this time, with only two legs. He looked awfully like Molly but with a mop of white hair. One of his eyes had a dark sclera while the other had a yellow sclera. Molly looked at the humanoid and had tears in her eyes. She dropped the guns and walked over.
"Tony?" Molly asked.
"..."
"..."
"OH MY GOD!" The two spiders shouted and hugged each other, causing everyone to be confused.
"Well, guess we found her brother," Emile said.
"Hm? You mean that's Molly's brother?" Ezekiel asked.
"Can... can someone explain to me what's going on?" Charlie asks.
The male spider demon looks at Charlie. "Charlie, guys, meet my sister, Molly!"
"Hey, y'all!" Molly said.
"SISTER?!" Charlie and Vaggie exclaimed.
"Well, shit..." The cat demon by the bar said. "That explains a few things..."
"OOOOH!" A little cyclops girl said with a shiny eye.
"I guess I can see the resemblance..." a fish demon in a lab coat said.
"So you're her brother, Mr. Tony, was it?" Emile said. "You can call me—"
"Angel Dust," The spider demon said to him. "My name's Angel Dust—"
"Ok then, Dusty, I am Pale Snake, but you can call me Emile!" Emile said. "It's a pleasure to meet you!"
"Yeah, and the pleasure is all—Wait a second," Angel stopped. "Molly, you called him your 'boo' right?"
"Oh yeah, I did say that," Molly pondered. "Why do you ask?"
Angel points his finger at her and looked her in the eyes.
"Molly, be honest with me," Angel said. "Who is he to you."
She looked at Emile for a second. She then walks over to Emile and suddenly swept him off his feet and held him up in her arms, carrying him bridal style.
"He's my boyfriend!" Molly said with complete confidence.
It took Angel ten seconds to register that sentence. His response was nothing but stuttering as if he was having problems trying to come up with the words he wanted to say. He pointed at Emile with one finger before one of his legs gave out on him, making him stumble into a wall. He began to slump on it for a while. He got himself back up and stood straight, looking shocked. He cleared his throat.
"He's your boyfriend?" Angel asked.
"That's what I said," Molly answers her brother. "Why do you ask?"
Angel paused. He looked at the cat demon, who in turn, raised a brow at him.
"I... I need to think for a moment," Angel said, walking over to the bar. "Husk, gimme the usual."
"Got ya," Husk said, grabbing an empty cup from behind him.
Angel sat down by the bar. Emile looked at the small cyclops girl. Surprisingly, he wasn't disturbed by the girl's appearance.
"I guess you must be the maid here," Emile said. "What's your name?"
"Oh! Me? I'm Nifty! It's a pleasure to meet you!" The girl said, extending her hand out. Her eyes contract as she smiled in excitement. Emile shook her hand, trying not to be too disturbed by that smile of hers. He looked at the girl with the eyepatch.
"I'm sorry for startling you, miss..."
"Vaggie," Vaggie said. "And let's just be clear on one thing: I don't trust you and I don't like you. If you so much as breathe the wrong way, I won't hesitate to cut your throat out."
"Right back at you," Ezekiel said with a cold voice.
"Oi, Zeke, I think I've had enough weapons at my throat as it is," Emile said. "Let's be chill."
"Vaggie..." Charlie said in a chastising tone.
Vaggie sighed, "I know honey. I know."
Ezekiel scoffs, "I still think this is a bad idea."
Emile looked at the fish demon.
"So, who are you?" Emile asked.
"H-Huh? Me? Well uh... Ahem!" The demon cleared his throat. "The name's Baxter. I'm what you'd call a... scientist."
"A scientist? In what field?" Emile asked.
"Why would you want to know?" Baxter asked, looking paranoid. "You're not here to steal my secrets, are you?"
"Well, no, obviously, I'm not here to—"
"Forgive the mad scientist over there," Angel said, taking a sip. "He's not much of a people person. That and he doesn't like to be touched."
"I know that feeling all too well when I was a kid..." Emile said. "But I'm not that much of an introvert. Still, I doubt someone like him deserves to be in Hell. He looks like he wouldn't hurt a fly."
"Did you not hear me say, that he's a mad scientist?" Angel asked. "For all I know, he probably experimented on actual people."
"And how was I supposed to know that some of my experiments would go wrong?!" Baxter asked.
"Uh..." Emile had been left speechless. He looked at the bartender. "And who's he?"
"Oh, that's just Husk," Charlie said. "He works as a bartender here. He may look rough around the edges, but once you get to know him better."
The sound of radio static began to crawl into his ears and he felt a disturbance coming from a dark corner. He saw a tall demon with small antlers and big ears. The demon was dressed in a red suit, holding up a staff. He had a monocle on his right eye. He had a wicked, golden smile filled with sharp teeth.
"And who is that?" Emile asked.
"And why does he look like a strawberry?" Molly asked.
"You have an overlord here?" Ezekiel asked, looking at the demon with suspicion.
"An overlord?!" Emile exclaimed.
"Oh, that's just Alastor," Angel said. "Speaking of which..."
He looked to Alastor, crossing his legs while pulling off a sultry smile.
"Hey, Al~? Wanna—"
The overlord snapped his own neck, turning to Angel. "No."
"Boo, you didn't even let me finish," Angel said.
Charlie clears her throat. "Al, these three are—"
"I already know who they are, darling," The overlord turns back to face Emile, Molly, and Ezekiel. "Now, what are God's little messengers doing here?"
"Special Agent Pale Snake, H.A.L.O," Emile said. "These are my fellow agents Ezekiel and Molly."
"Hey there Mr. Strawberry!" Molly said.
"Hmph," Ezekiel scoffs. "We're here under orders from the higher-ups to bless the place."
Angel spat out his drink and looked at Emile. Everyone else other than the overlord himself looked in shock.
"You've come to bless the Hotel?" Charlie asked. "And, H.A.L.O?"
"Heavenly Angelic Logistics Organization," Emile said. "Basically, we're like a mix of the MI6, the CIA, and the FBI. Complete with a bit of an angelic touch to it."
"And we've been given orders from our superiors to help you in your research into redemption," Ezekiel said.
"That's the short of it," Molly said.
Charlie looked speechless, yet amazed. Angel and Vaggie looked flabbergasted by the statement. Husk and Nifty just stared at the three. Baxter began to mutter to himself.
"Interesting..." Alastor said.
Emile couldn't help but feel jumpy around the overlord. Overlords are ranked higher than Sinner Demons. These demons are more powerful than the average demon and rule over certain parts of Hell. The pressure this Alastor was giving off was proof of how strong this demon is. But there was something else about this demon that made him feel more uncomfortable.
"Now hold on just a second," Angel's voice finally caught Emile's attention.
He looked in Angel's direction to see the spider demon standing up.
"Are you saying that Heaven actually believes in this whole redemption thing?" Angel asked. "They really think redemption is possible in Hell?"
"Frankly, I find the idea of redemption in Hell to be a hopeless cause," Ezekiel said. "But I guess it wouldn't hurt to see just how far this whole experiment goes."
"And it's a way better solution to Hell's overpopulation crisis," Emile said. "It's a long-term solution, but I'm sure it will work if you give it your best shot."
"So then, you'll actually—"
"Hold it," Vaggie spoke up. "You just expect us to trust every word you've said? Just like that?"
'And of course, we have a skeptic...' Emile thought.
Charlie turned to Vaggie.
"Vaggie, they said they want to help—"
"I heard them the first time," Vaggie said. "But let's take a moment to analyze the situation here."
She looked at Emile. She had a rather stern look on her face, one filled with suspicion and skepticism. She walked past Charlie and looked at Emile in the eye.
"You say that Heaven wants to support Charlie and the Hotel, but I'm not buying that lame excuse," Vaggie said. "You never explained exactly who these higher-ups are."
"Oh, that is a good point there, Toots," Angel said. "Who gave you the order to come here, Molly?"
"That is on a strictly need-to-know basis—"
"The Council," Molly said.
Ezekiel glared at Molly, making the girl shake a little.
"The Council?" Charlie asked.
Ezekiel sighed, "Headed by the archangel Michael, the Regent of Heaven. The council comprises him and six other archangels who all share a close connection to God himself. Lord Gabriel; Lady Zadkiel; Lord Raphael; Lady Camael; Lord Jophiel; and Lord Uriel."
"Holy shit..." Husk said.
"I know, right? When the council orders you to do something, it's gotta be something big," Emile said. "And they all happen to be your relatives, Princess."
"They're... my relatives?" Charlie asked.
"Charlie has an extended family?!" Angel asked.
"Yeah, I was surprised when I first learned of it," Emile said.
Charlie stood there in shock.
"My dad... he... he never said anything about having any relatives in Heaven..." Charlie said. "Is... is any of that true?"
Ezekiel sincerely nodded.
"Word for word," Ezekiel said. "If that isn't enough, here is proof of it."
Ezekiel reached into his pocket, showing a photograph of an angel dressed in regal clothing. One close look at the angel's face revealed a glaring detail that shocked Charlie even more.
"T-That face—! It can't be... the eyes are a different color, but there's no doubt about it," Charlie said. "That angel has my dad's face on it!"
"WHAT?!" Vaggie exclaimed. "No way! That has to be photoshopped! There is no way that angel looks anything like Lucifer!"
Charlie pulls out her phone and shows a family photo of her younger self standing between her father and mother. She put both pictures side by side and they were an exact match, but there were some differences in some of the facial features. The angel himself has a nose while her father lacks said nose. The cheek marks were there, but they didn't have the same kind of teeth.
"Oh shit..." Angel said. "Are they... twins?"
"Exactly," Emile said. "Lord Michael and Lucifer were among the first archangels God himself created. The other five came right after them."
"I... I never knew..." Charlie said. "Then that means I'm... not entirely a demon..."
"Well now, this just got exciting," Alastor said. "To think that Charlie has relatives who actually support her on this endeavor..."
"Are you satisfied now?" Ezekiel asked.
Vaggie looked at Charlie before looking back at Ezekiel.
"I'm still not entirely convinced yet," Vaggie said. "Just what is it that Heaven wants from the Hotel?"
"Heaven only wants to know if redemption is possible," Ezekiel said. "We would not be here if the council had no interest in the idea."
"He's got ya there, toots," Angel said. "Say, does Heaven allow gay people to go into Heaven?"
Ezekiel raised a brow. "Sexuality has no bearing on whether you go to Heaven or not."
"Back then, if you were gay, they wouldn't let you in," Molly said. "But when the LGBTQ community was on the rise, Heaven had to change its rules to allow members of said community into Heaven."
"Plus there are already enough gay people in Heaven as it is. Even some angels prefer a member of the same sex," Ezekiel said.
"Well shit, even you guys can be gay?" Angel asked, looking excited. "Hell, do you guys even have anything down there?"
"Angel!" Charlie spoke to Angel with a chastising tone.
"Jeez, what's wrong about being curious for a change?" Angel asked.
"He makes a good point, even if I don't see why it's important or anything," Alastor said.
Ezekiel puts a hand on his face.
"Yes, but—"
"Good, that's all I needed to know," Angel said.
"I will never understand you demons and your urges..." Ezekiel said. "Any relevant questions?"
"..." Vaggie took a deep breath. "No, I think I got all my answers."
"And?"
"Just get it over with," Vaggie said. "The sooner I don't have to put up with you, the better."
"Thank you," Emile said. "Well, let's get to it."
"Right," Molly said.
"Understood," Ezekiel said.
Emile puts his hand on the floor and chanted in Enochian. A glyph formed with a pattern of a cross within the Star of David, surrounded by a circle inscribed with Enochian runes. Three big circles appeared on the inside of the circle. Emile, Ezekiel, and Molly stood in the circles, forming a triangle. The three of them began to chant in Enochian.
The circle pulsed, releasing waves of light that reverberated across the interior of the Hotel. The circle continues to pulse, sending waves that moved throughout the Hotel. The circle kept pulsing and pulsing until it fades. An aura coated Charlie and the other demons. The aura then fades.
"That should do it," Emile said. "Now when the next Extermination rolls in, any and all Exorcists will know that this place is blessed and under Heaven's protection. That will go for anyone who happen to live here as well."
"So the Hotel is now a real safe haven from the Exterminations," Angel said.
"And if anyone gets any bright ideas of attacking this place, Heaven will know," Ezekiel said.
"Wow..." Charlie said. "I... I don't know what to say."
"No need to thank us," Emile said. "We were just doing our job."
"We'll be making our leave now," Ezekiel said.
A portal opened above their heads.
"Will... will we see you again?" Charlie asked.
"We'll just have to wait and see," Emile said.
Angel walked over to Molly.
"So... uh... Molls, is mom up there?" Angel asked.
Molly smiled, "Yes, she is."
Angel chuckled. "Then do me a favor and tell her that me and Niss—Dante—are doing alright down here."
Molly sniff as she wiped a tear off her face.
"I will," Molly said.
Ezekiel went up first, followed by Molly, and then Emile. The portal then closes.
Charlie smiled.
"I hope they come back and visit us again," Charlie said. "I'd like to know more about my whole family..."
"I'm just glad that my sister is up there," Angel said. "At least she has someone looking out for her..."
"What was that, legs?" Husk asked.
"Oh, I was just talking to myself out loud," Angel said.
"Now this just got a lot more entertaining than I thought it would be," Alastor said.
The staff's single eye opened.
"Well, sir?" The staff asked. "Shall I?"
"Wait, hold on Al," Charlie said. "I'm not sure that would be a good idea..."
"Hm? And why not?" Alastor asked out of curiosity. "Is it because of your father?"
Charlie was silent and looked away from Alastor. She looked back at Alastor with a worrisome expression.
"If anyone found out that Heaven is supporting the Hotel, I'm afraid of the consequences that would come with it," Charlie said. "The last thing I want is for my father to know about any of this. I... I don't want him to know that—"
A sudden and loud crash startled her. Her horns came up from her head and her eyes went from round to elliptical, with her pupils turning into slits surrounded by red. She turned around. The sound came from outside the Hotel. She headed outside and saw what looked to be a black coffin with a golden cross on it.
The lid suddenly came off with a forceful jolt.
An imp rose out of the casket. The imp was bigger than most average imps. The stripe pattern of the horns was white and black, suggesting that the imp was a male. Two other caskets crashed down. The imp shook his head and put his hands over his head.
"Fuck... shit... that fucking hurts..." the imp said.
"Um... are you alright?" Charlie asked.
The imp looked at her, giving her a view of the imp's face. She saw a symbol on the top of his head and a white splotch over to the imp's right eye.
She recognized the mark on the imp's head. She gasped as soon as she did. That mark... she had seen that mark before.
"Blitzo?" Charlie uttered.
The imp looked at her for a second and his jaw slowly unhinged itself. He pointed a finger at her.
"Charlie?" The imp asked.
