Baez left Damon Marcos in the interrogation room and went over to her desk. She started typing on her computer and looked up when she saw movement in the corner of her eye.
Danny walked in.
"Why aren't you at the hospital Reagan?"
"I got released." He said.
"So, they just let you go immediately after taking a bullet out of your back? I don't think so."
"When have I not told the truth?"
"Right now. Why are you here?"
"I heard you have someone in custody for the drive by case."
"And you wanted to interrogate him."
"Right."
"Sorry tough guy. I already did. He admitted to shooting the boy who turns out to be his son and the bullet was meant for the mom. Now your all caught up. Go back to the hospital where you belong."
"I discharged myself. Linda advised against it but I told her I wouldn't do anything risky for a while."
"Okay. Go home then. You should be on medical leave."
"Baez...I'm fine. I don't need to be on leave."
"Okay. I give up." She said as she sat down.
Danny pulled out his chair and sat in front of her at his desk and started typing on his computer. After some time of quietness, Danny broke the silence.
"So, have anything that'll give us an idea on what we're looking at here?"
"Referring to your attacker? No. I'm going through all those you've locked up and if any have been released recently."
"I don't think anything will come up. Was a shell casing found anywhere?"
Baez started typing on her computer and lab results came up.
"Yes. Finger prints were found on it Looks like they belong to...Wait, that can't be right."
"What?"
"The finger print found on the shell was a match to one Thomas Wilder."
"What? That has to be a mistake. I killed him."
"Or at least that's what he wants you to think."
"I shot him dead! I even checked his pulse! There's no way!"
"Danny, calm down."
"Calm down? You just told me that those prints were Wilder's and I'm supposed to calm down?? He's still alive! He killed 23 people and kidnapped my niece to try to get back at me!"
"Reagan I really think you should go home and be with your family."
Danny sighed and nodded. "Fine. Keep me updated, will ya?"
Danny made it home and pretty much sprinted inside before shutting the door and locking it. It was about the same time Sean and Jack came home from school so the moment the front door opened, Danny had his gun out.
"Hey dad." Jack said and he barely saw the gun as Danny put it away again.
"Hey. What are you doing home from school?"
"Um...it's 3:15. School always lets out at three. Does mom know your out of the hospital?"
"Yes. Trust me, she's been checking up on me. Go do your homework. Both of you."
"Can't we do it later?" Sean asked.
"When you say later, how much later are we talking?"
"Few hours?"
"Two hours. That's it. And that's only because I don't want to argue with you."
"Yes!" They both said and gave high fives to each other.
"Beat it before I change my mind."
The two children ran off to play video games while Danny went over to his computer and turned it on. There was nothing else sent to his email so he was at least glad about that.
He let out a sigh and went over to the couch and sat down.
His phone rang and he pulled it out and answered it.
"Hey babe...No...I'm home now...You don't have to keep checking up on me...I'm fine... They just got home... Um...playing video games...I know but I gave them a few hours to play...I know I'm a softie when it comes to them but they don't have to know that...okay...I love you and will see you when you get home."
He hung up the phone and set it down in front of him. Then, he received a second call from an unknown number. He slowly answered it.
"Detective Reagan."
His blood ran cold when he heard the voice on the other line.
"Hello detective."
"Wilder..."
