Chapter 22

Glinda watched as Elphaba checked over poor Larry. He hadn't woken up yet and the green woman was ok with that. His body needed the rest. She was glad that his fever was coming down and that his skin color was improving.

Doctor Talib was looking at Mr. Farhidi. His blood pressure was a little high, but that was about it. Faruq was instructed to go with the prisoner and Lieutenant Zetti to the interrogation. Glinda recognized Farhidi and wanted to reach out and smack him, but she restrained herself.

Elphaba approached her after finishing up with Larry. She took a couple of quick notes about the blonde's skin color, pulse, and was glad to see that things were practically normal. Taking a seat, next to her friend's bed, and said,

"It's good to see you."

"It's good to be seen. What is the mill owner doing here?" Glinda wanted to know.

"Oh, we think he's the one who had a hand in poisoning you and Bayram. Not to worry though. Fiyero will get it out of him," Elphaba gave her a wink.

"He better or I'll give him a piece of my mind," the blonde said.

"No, you will not. We have to make sure your muscles are still working before you go off trying to walk or even make a bubble," the green woman gave her a look. Glinda was about to object when Doctor Talib made his way over.

"She's absolutely right. We don't know how your body will react. You've been off your feet for a while," the Royal Physician reminded her.

"Doc, can I sit up?" Bayram spoke up from his bed on the other side of Glinda.

"Yes, you can. Miss Elphaba," Talib moved toward the Lieutenant and Elphaba went to help him.

"How are you feeling?" She asked him.

"A little bit like jelly. Nothing wants to move right," Bayram admitted.

"We'll get you sorted, but not tonight and it won't be overnight that you'll feel better. I promise though, you will feel better," Talib vowed as he and Elphaba helped him sit up. The green woman grabbed a few extra pillows to make sure his back was supported.

"Sounds like a plan Doc but first, can I get something to eat?" Bayram wanted to know.

"Hunger is always a good sign. Glinda, do you want anything?" Elphaba asked.

"I could use a small smackerel of something," her friend nodded.

"I'm sure Mr. Samuels and Amir will come up with something then," she gave them a wink and headed out the door. While she made her way down the hall towards the kitchen, there was a commotion. Rushing to check out what was going on not far from her, she found that a couple of soldiers were struggling with a man she didn't recognize.

"What's going on boys?" She asked.

"We found this guy trying to sneak onto the property. Says he has to see Lieutenant Bayram. We were taking him to Lieutenant Zetti when he clocked poor Smythe upside the head," the other soldier, whom she recognized as Patz, explained.

"Oh yeah?" Elphaba raised an eyebrow.

"It's a matter of life and death!" The man was trying to squirm away despite being in her presence.

"If I were to say to you, I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind, you would say…" she trailed off.

"I am the echo of your ancestors," the man answered.

"Boys, let him go," Elphaba said. The two soldiers looked at her like she was crazy.

"He's with Bayram," she clarified.

"Yes ma'am," both answered.

"Get Boq for me please. Have him meet me in the small dining room. I have something to handle before we talk," she told the soldiers before turning to the man, "please follow me. We have much to discuss."
