"You know we ain't supposed to-[Hey!]," Present Mic shouted mid sentence, feeling something tug at his jacket ever so lightly. All Might tried to dissuade his student from harassing the driver, but was ignored completely. He deflated a little at that, falling silent. Senji continued pressing Mic, though for what he wasn't entirely sure.
"Come on, Mic! We worked hard today, why not let us have a little fun? Look, there's a shopping center up here that has a movie theater and a bunch of other cool stuff. Can catch a movie while we shop. Or are you a goody two-shoes now?," Senji noticed him glancing at her in the rearview mirror, and made an exaggerated pout at him. The pro-slash-teacher deliberated hard for a moment before caving in under her intense stare. He pulled the bus into a spot near the back of the parking lot, groaning while she celebrated her victory.
"Huh?! Why're we stopping?," Bakugo complained loudly. The driver let out a deep sigh, with All Might questioning his sudden decision as well.
"Slight detour. If you've got some cash, go wander around. We'll round y'all up after a while," Mic waved Bakugo's shouting off, and stepped off the bus with All Might close on his heels. Todoroki and Bakugo followed Senji reluctantly. Once the teachers were lost beyond the automatic doors, Senji took off to the skies and disappeared.
"Hah?! The fuck!"
She heard her classmate below, obviously confused and upset. She apologized silently before turning her gaze forward and gliding through the taller buildings of the city below. She checked her phone again, confirming a location, then turned toward a tall radio tower near the center of the city. As she neared, she could see a spot of crimson that took shape the closer she got, turning into a familiar pair of wings. The body attached to those wings, decked in black and yellow, was her mentor and someone like an older brother to her.
"Kei, you know it's hard to get out as much now right?," she grumbled out while landing beside the man. Her wings dispersed, and she rolled from her squatted position to sit down with her back against the railing.
"Sorry, yeah," he apologized with no discernable sincerity, then turned to look outward over the city. The girl mumbled something under her breath, then looked away from him and fidgeted with her phone. They sat in silence for just a moment, the wind blowing back and forth over them.
"Thought you could use a break," Hawks finally spoke up.
"A break?," Senji repeated his last words, not completely following.
"No? Guess you are pretty tough, in that way," he spun around and sat beside her, wings shielding them both from the gusts of wind. He tried to study her face, but her now shorter hair still obscured her features from the side view.
"Thanks," she spoke softly.
"Hm? I guess I did make some pretty strong assumptions. My bad," he halfheartedly apologized again, losing momentum as the girl's tail flicked against his side. They sat there for a while longer, the only sound the wind whistling through different instruments decorating the top of the tower.
"How long've you got?," Hawks asked.
"Depends," Senji answered, scrolling through a list of show times on her phone. Hawks watched her screen from the corner of his eye. "Looks like…somewhere between an hour and a half to two-ish hours."
"Watching a movie?"
"Mic and All Might should be. Gotta be back before then though."
"Right. Didn't you have those supplemental lessons today?," Hawks flicked his visor up and down on his nose, finding the awkwardness of the situation building up.
"Yeah. Oh, right. Tokoyami's supposed to be with you, isn't he?," Senji fired back with her own question, and Hawks visibly flinched.
"He's a little mad at me, currently," the blonde answered sheepishly. Senji tilted her head and looked up at him finally, but he glanced away and grinned.
"I was a little rude and impatient, I guess?"
Senji studied his movements for a few more minutes, then shrugged and turned back to her phone. There was a string of texts buzzing in that she kept swiping off the screen, finally replying to one from what looked like a different sender. She exhaled hard, dropping the phone into her lap and leaning back into Hawks's feathers.
"Looks like there's a lot less time," she explained lazily. Her hand drifted up toward the red feathers, tracing one between her finger and thumb while she was lost in thought. Hawks studied her other arm, now made up of the same transparent scales that formed her wings and tail. He frowned a little at the sight, but wasn't ignorant to her mindless movements either.
"Guess I've taken a pretty rough assignment from you," he spoke in a much quieter tone this time, with a genuine softness that tugged at Senji's heart. She let out a tiny laugh, and her lips pulled into a tight smile. Hawks continued, serious but still softly.
"Here soon, I won't really be as free. League is making new friends, and those friends are a lot more cautious."
"Bugs?," Senji asked, and he nodded. She started to mouth an apology, but he pulled her head into his shoulder and teased her hair gently. She had reflexively moved to push him away, but instead clung lightly to his jacket. That gave him an even better view of her left arm, and he felt a new wave of guilt over her current predicament.
"Hey," her voice was strained a little, but Hawks just listened for now. "Promise me, you'll be careful? I can cover missing stuff with my quirk, but if you get messed up it's a lot more permanent. So don't go losing your wings, yeah?"
Hawks was taken aback a little bit, though he had expected some kind of emotional outburst. That's why he dragged her out here in the first place. Senji pulled out of his partial embrace and took several deep breaths. Hawks did the same, regaining his composure before responding to her honest feelings.
"Promise," he answered finally. With that reassurance, Senji rolled to her feet and stretched her arms over her head. She turned around, placing her hands on the railing beside his relaxed wing, and glanced down at him. She flashed him a warm smile, finally letting him see her face. There were bags under her eyes, and a faint redness that hinted toward her hidden emotions. With a quick goodbye, she pulled herself over the railing and launched herself downward. Hawks saw a glittering trail follow behind her, then watched as her wings unfurled and she swung back up in the air. She flew off into the distance, wings reflecting the red-orange from the setting sun.
