Time passed, the seasons changed, it was now winter. Ice incased everything, tiny shards of icicles hung from the trees and fences.
Beetle hopped around, elated, kicking up flurries of snow while Frost flattened her ears and moaned about how hard hide and seek was going to be for her now. She was mostly black despite her white stripes and paws.
Burr and Falcon were nowhere to be seen, they randomly came and went without such a goodbye or hello.
In time such as these, I liked to reminisce and then forget. About my old life, about the rogue group, about even my leg.
Lost in thought I didn't notice that Falcon had returned and was entertaining the kits with a story, about the fabled ancient cats of the forest.
"It's said we are all descended from them!" purred Falcon as the kittens bounced up and down in delight.
They began talking at once their words jumbling together.
"What an amazing-"
"Is that-"
"Story! What am-"
"True? I don't think-"
"I? I wanna be a tiger-"
"So, seems pretty hard to-"
"RAWr!"
"Believe!"
Falcon just flicked his tail impatiently waiting for the two kits to stop talking, "I'll be honest with you, I barely heard any words, can you repeat that-"
"Okay! So I wanted to-"
"I don't think-"
"Say that was an amazing-"
"That's a true story because-"
Falcon interjected, "It's rude to interrupt others."
Both Frost and Beetle paused blinking. Beetle looked down at his paws in shame while Frost boldly asked, "Then why'd you interrupt my sentence."
Ignoring her question Falcon instead said, "One at a time please, one at a time."
The two kittens who were peacefully talking with each other earlier stared at each other in the way kittens only could when they had to fight for the first to speak.
Beetle pounced onto Frost using his superior size to pin her down, and started to say with large kitty eyes standing on his hind legs to try to reach Falcon's size, "What great cat am I descended from? Can I be a tiger? Look how big I am! I have to be a tiger right? Please please please-"
Beneath him Frost wiggled her way out while he was distracted and shoved him to the side also getting up into Falcon's face, "I'd be the tiger if anything! But I don't believe it! Is it really true? Is it? Because there is no way they exist! Cuz uh, cuz what would they eat?!"
"Dogs of course!" called out Beetle spitting out snow, "And you interrupted me!"
"Ooops!" said Frost putting on an exaggerated innocent face, "I just didn't see you there!"
Beetle pounced again, but this time Frost squealed and ran, "Get back here! Feel the wrath of the mighty Tigerclan warrior!"
Frost smirked jumping over a fence but landed in a bush with a loud OOMPH where Beetle caught her.
"No fair!" she hissed kicking up snow, "Stupid bush!"
"You fight dirty!" protested Beetle slipping and following on his face.
Soon they were rolling around trying to best each other until their fur was spiky and filled with clumps of snow and ice, Falcon glanced up to me watching from the window and shook his head, eyes gleaming with amusement. "Kittens am I right?"
I nodded with a mrow of amusement of my own but then turned away, it reminded me too much of running around in the snow by the river with my own sibling…
