DJ was very worried about Kimmy. She seemed distracted today and went out of her way to avoid DJ. Finally, DJ cornered her in the hallway.
"Kimmy, are you mad at me? Did I do something wrong? If I did, I'm really sorry."
"No DJ. I'm not mad at you. I just know that when you find out what my older sister did, you'll hate me. I know I'll lose my best friend ever."
"That's impossible," DJ said, "What could your sister possibly have done to make me hate you?"
"Diana… she was the drunk driver that killed your mom," Kimmy replied, "Her friend got in the driver's seat so she wouldn't get in trouble, but she told me the truth last night."
Kimmy burst into tears.
"Kimmy," DJ exclaimed hugging her, "I don't hate you and you're still my best friend."
"Thank you, Deej,"
Kimmy paused.
"Are you going to go to the cops about this," Kimmy asked.
Before DJ could answer the bell rang.
"See you later Kimmy," DJ said.
She ran to catch her bus.
When DJ got home she found Stephanie holding Michelle.
"Steph, does Dad know you're doing that," DJ asked.
"He said I could," Stephanie said, "Are you okay?"
"Where's Dad," DJ asked.
"He's in the kitchen," Stephanie replied, "Why?"
"I need to talk to him," DJ said, "Kimmy told me something and I'm not sure what to do about it."
"Okay," Stephanie said, "What did she tell you?"
"Nothing," DJ sighed.
"Liar," Stephanie said, "You said something and something isn't nothing."
"Steph," DJ said, "Just trust me. You don't want to know."
Stephanie nodded.
"Dad," DJ said, "Got a minute?"
"Sure honey," Danny said, "What's on your mind?"
"Kimmy told me something that her oldest sister told her. Diana was actually driving the car that killed Mom. Her friend jumped in the driver's seat so that she wouldn't get in trouble. I don't know what to do. Kimmy asked me if I was going to tell the cops. If I don't, I'll be doing the wrong thing. If I do Kimmy will hate me."
"Deej," Danny said, "You're just a kid. I'll take care of it."
"DJ," Danny said a few hours later.
"Hi, Dad. So what did you do?"
"I went to Rose's lawyer," Danny said, "I told him what Kimmy told you without using Diana's name. He's going to the judge and filing an appeal for Rose."
DJ hugged her father.
"Thanks, Dad."
She paused.
"Does it make me a bad person that I'm mad at Diana?"
"Of course not," Danny said, "Diana caused your mom to die. But honey, forgiveness isn't for the other person. It's for yourself. Pent-up anger is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die."
DJ nodded again seeing the wisdom in Danny's words– he always knew best.
